My thoughts on this is that it grants way too much power to corporate entities with lawyers and teams of people who can send DMCA notices and now Youtube guidelines notices in order to disincentivize content that is critical of them. I'm mainly concerned about the fact that many of these videos exist only because people can make money by doing them, and Youtube is giving corporate bullies another tool to effectively silence their critics by removing their source of revenue. Youtube's new content restriction guidelines for monetization are insanely restrictive and basically gives them free reign to take down anything that they don't want to hear. Released a video review critical of the new Call of Duty game? Controversial opinion, you're not allowed to make money off that. Released a video "in partnership" with Activision talking about how rad the new Call of Duty game is? Gotta get a swimming pool to fit all this money in. The end result is a future where there are no more professionally produced content on Youtube containing critical thought because there's no money in it for them, and instead you can expect an even greater non-stop flood of paid shills gushing endlessly at the top of their lungs. The problem with this is that I'm not necessarily morally opposed to the move, this change was spurred on by what youtube's advertisers want, and advertisers have a right to select the kind of content they associate themselves with. That itself is a right I want to defend. The main issue is that Youtube doesn't give their video creators any choice in the matter. There's no way to find advertisers that want to associate with the kind of content you produce. Youtube is meant to be an open platform for this kind of thing but restrict all monetization to content that can only appeal to mainstream audiences. This both scares away niche advertisers and producers of niche content, completely defeating the point of creating an open platform. If Youtube wants to go down this road of allowing advertisers to dictate the content they wish to associate with, they really need to implement a system that allows for greater diversity in advertising and for producers of niche or opinionated content to partner with the right kind of advertisers, instead of essentially blocking off large swathes of content creators from earning any money. And they need to protect these creators of niche content from the corporate entities who try to bully them off the site.5 points

It is. There is no inherent ability on Fuwanovel that allows users to childishly hide posts from the community merely because they don't wish to hear it. In fact there is no 'neg' ability on Fuwanovel whatsoever, and therefore nothing to dissuade you from speaking your mind (as long as it adheres to the rules.) Ergo, better.4 points -

I have a friend who dislikes VNs and I feel the same way... but it is a matter of tastes. If you don't like reading, you probably would prefer anime by a long shot. I'm a hardened bibliophile who loves anime aesthetic, so to someone like me they'd seem like the best thing ever, but for most other people, it would probably be pretty hard to get in to VNs. What doesn't help is the horrendous pacing many VNs seem to have. But as a whole, I do think it's wrong to conflate VNs and boring, it's a medium of storytelling like any other and just like anime, some can be boring, but some can be incredibly engaging.3 points -

Youtube becoming a "Safe Space"
Infernoplex and one other reacted to Deep Blue for a topic
It's just a way they use to "discourage" users to not speak of certain topics that might be controversial or just offend certain groups of society. They're as wide as possible regarding what kind of content can be considered “not advertiser-friendly”, pretty much everything they want can be subsumed into the category of "Controversial or sensitive subjects and events" The answer to this could be, "well don't use youtube if you don't agree wiht their TOS" but that's a really conformist point of view to this whole issue which I think is much deeper... Is it censorship?Meh I don't want to answer that, but let me tell you that there will be always be those who defend ( or do nothing and by omission they are also agreeing) with this this type of things and those who are against it.2 points -

It's not censorship: This isn't the same as banning certain material, it just means you can't make money from it. But hey, if you've got a point of view and you want to put it out there, nothing's stopping you. If you want to be edgy for coin however ... well, you'll need to find somewhere else. I hear in ye olden days people used a soapbox, a megaphone, and a hat. Just sayin'. Basically they're not going to allow their platform to fund people to potentially do some pretty awful stuff. As for the video, it's pretty hyperbolic.2 points -

Impress a normie!
Nandemonai and one other reacted to solidbatman for a topic
You either need interactivity, or a super unique story, and lacking either of those, really really good execution of a "trope". That rules out things like Katawa Shoujo, Clannad, MajiKoi, or basically any of the really popular VNs in this circle. Also, rule out porn. Big no no for most people getting into VNs. Sure you might be able to name an exception or two, but those people are outside the norm. So, what does that leave us with? Short kinetic VNs that focus on telling a single story, really well, things like Planetarian, and Narcissu. For interactivity, we can look towards Analogue: A Hate Story, Ace Attorney, Corpse Party, Danganronpa and even to a certain extent, the Tell Tale games (I'm aware that these generally are not considered VNs, but in my eyes, they at their core, do the same things that VNs do to make themselves unique). And finally, super unique stories, things like Phenomeno, The House in Fata Morgana, and Cave Cave Deus Videt. "But Bats! What about X VN or Y VN!" Chances are, if you are listing anything with a common route, it will not catch the attention of a "normie". Unless the common route, is short, and generally advances the overall story, you will lose the interest of most newcomers to VNs. I say this mostly from experience. Lets take a look at my early VNs I've read. -Analogue: A Hate Story -- common route line sort of blurry, but advances the actual story -Ever 17 -- common route is like 20 minutes long before splitting off into one of four directions -Clannad -- Long common route, but with enough variation to not wear too much on the reader. Subsequent playthroughs can get tedious with changes based off choices, when wanting to get into the route. Also, main story is locked away, HUGE no for newcomers in my experience -Steins;Gate -- This is a tricky one for sure. Solid story, but takes a while to kick off. Can be a turn off to newcomers wanting the real story (though if memory serves, character routes can be skipped and the true story can be unlocked without character arcs completed. Feel free to correct me.) -Planetarian -- Good for newcomers, short, focuses on two characters and their relationship, lack of world story means little time on lore. No common -Corpse Party -- adventure VN, plenty of trial and error, lack of skip make it a tough pill to swallow except for the patient, and if youre patient, you likely already are reading longer, more celebrated VNs in the community like Majikoi and LB! No common route When I explain VNs to people, for example my girlfriend, they tend to be most interested in the shorter, more unique sounding experiences and less in the long, multi-route, high school setting. I will never get my girlfriend to read Clannad, but Planetarian is something she is loving at the moment. She adores The House in Fata Morgana but has absolutely no interest in Majikoi or Katawa Shoujo. Same deal with a co-worker of mine. Same with an old high school friend of mine. All 3 of these people enjoy anime, but don't watch a ton of it. They enjoy manga but do not read a ton of it. They are "normies" and just like with anime and manga, a VN is going to need to stand out like the color of this text in a sea of same looking text.2 points -

Darklord Rooke reacted to GBPatch for a topic
✧✧✧✧✧ In this barren world of endless deserts, almost all live their lives upon large fractions of land floating above the surface. Here there are two types of people: Normals and Abnormals. ✧✧✧✧✧ Buffalo Seer is an eccentric Abnormal who wants nothing more than to use the magic ability within them; future seeing. However, even within their society where everyone has a special power, future seeing is considered dangerous and advised against. Unable to be swayed, Seer finally gains permission to look into their own future, only to receive an unbelievable revelation. Not only have they left Abnormal society, they're married to someone they've never met before. With visions of happiness in their mind, Seer leaves everything behind and ventures to the part of the land fraction where those without magic live; Normal society. Seer is going to convince this stranger that they are meant to be together no matter what it takes, even if it means tagging along on an adventure. In only a few days Seer will learn just how far away that pleasant future is. -Game Purchase Page- Full game features: A 145,000 word script 3 romance-able characters (one male, one female, one agender) Choosing the name and pronouns (he, she, or they) of the protagonist Lite sprite and background animations A variety of choices, all of which are worth selecting (there are no ‘incorrect’ options) 20 beautiful CG images 25 gorgeous background locations (complete!) A lovely soundtrack with almost 40 minutes of original music (complete!) Extra unlockable scenes Buffalo Seer is a driven, goal oriented individual. For most of their life their goal was to use their ability at least once. After that was achieved there was no plan, Seer simply expected to be satisfied with life. However, upon seeing what the future holds Seer immediately created a new goal, finding their future spouse. But then after finding them Seer decided they’d have to get married before they could be fully content. Once that inevitably occurs, who knows? Seer has an odd habit of phrasing things in unnecessarily suspicious ways, that coupled with the way they dress causes them to come across as creepy within Normal society. Seer doesn’t seem to mind. Kea is a police officer who recently transferred to the capital of Vespen in order to work undercover. The job requires an officer to infiltrate a street gang that mainly recruits young teens off the street, hence the outfit they’ve got on. Kea was requested specifically due to their youthful stature and fitting personality, since in informal situations Kea is chatty, fast-talking, and can easily come across as rude or uncultured. While on the job Kea speaks and behaves (somewhat) more seriously. Despite technically being in charge, they are the black sheep of the group. While everyone else is perfectly comfortable bending or even out right breaking the law Kea is, naturally, not so keen on that. But, no matter how often Kea intentionally or accidentally isolates themselves from the others and how much they cause disagreements, they don’t actually want it to be that way. They’d like to get along with the team and have a positive impact on situations, it just seems impossible because of their position. Mapmaker and item collector extraordinaire Piper wouldn’t normally have a reason to be in the capital, however this is an unusual time for her. She is currently on hiatus. She chose to take a break because constant work had worn her down. Before she felt duty call and joined the adventure she had been spending her days wearing nice clothing and drinking tea while discussing good books with pleasant ladies. However, Piper has no intention of wasting time sulking over the loss of the last part of her time off from ruin trekking. In fact, she doesn’t seem to ever spend time being in a poor mood. Piper treats others in a friendly and casual manner but is nothing near an open book. She’s deeply enigmatic. Her courteous nature stems entirely from social obligations rather than genuine interest and that fact becomes rather obvious if you try speaking with her for any extended period of time. January is a man of massive importance and wealth in the region of Vespen, though only due to inheriting it. He has been the Duke of a significant family ever since his mother passed away a few years prior. That title is no longer bestowed and every other house in Vespen that had the title at one point has had the lineage die out. With an heirless only child as a Duke, January’s family is currently one step away from joining those other houses in being stripped of their clout. The weight of being the last true noble in the region has not been lost on January. The entire point of the trip is escorting January to a safe house, so in that sense he is an important member of the team. But only in that sense. January isn’t allowed to do anything, much to his frustration. Because of his sheltered upbringing January has spent his entire life having people assume he’s useless or an easy target. It is unclear if the group thinks the same way or if they are simply overprotective. Upon first meeting January he comes across as rather skittish. After Seer shows him his future he resolves to change the way he lives his life. From then on he begins to act more indignant and reckless. He is going to be a contributing member of the team, whether the rest of the group wants him to or not. *Not Pursueable* Trinette is the leader of a bounty hunting gang. The group is famous for its efficiency and willingness to work outside what is legal. However, lawlessness is the last thing you’ll find within the group itself. It is highly organized and functions essentially the way a normal business does. Every employee has a set wage, time off, health coverage, etc. The reason this criminal gang functions this way is because Trinette’s background is mainly in finances. After working for many reputable companies she decided to start a company of her own. She chose a bounty hunting gang simply because it was a position that needed to be filled in the area. If you can look past all her wrongdoing and not take what she does in her job personally, Trinette is a rather amiable woman. Thanks for checking this thread out! Inganock is really great so far, I'm honestly not sure how I haven't picked it up before this. The writing is gorgeous. It has a poetic quality to it, which makes it really fun to read. The art has a unique feel to it and I haven't really seen anything quite like it before. It's hard to describe, the colors are bright in some places and neutral in others, and it has a sort of texture to it. The characters also tend to have an almost chibi look to them, which isn't something that I'm normally fond of, but inganock pulls it off really well. The world is probably the most interesting one I've ever seen in a visual novel, and the atmosphere is incredibly thick and easy to get sucked in to. It's an experience that you can't really get anywhere else, and I would definitely recommend it to someone looking for something outside of the standard visual novel box. Most of the gripes I have with it so far are small ones. I guess the main one would be that the sound quality is a bit low, and it could definitely do well with more tracks. With that said, the tracks that it has are pretty good, and that's far from enough to break the experience for me. Seeing how much I like Inganock and Gahkthun, Sona-nyl is going to be really hard to wait for.1 point -

I admit you got to take this vid in paticular with a large grain of salt, but it still raises reasonable points about legitimate coverage being demonetized, while some pretty trashy stuff remains untouched - for questionable reasons. The scope is going to be far-reaching and likely to cause a lot of collateral damage to peoples livelihoods, that have produced content for years~ You joke about it, but some of those people have made their content into fulltime jobs for over ten years now. Random example, any depictions or coverage of war will be considered (and already has been, from some other channels I've visited) an offense to the TOS. Sure, it's easy to say "so you can't get paid for it anymore, so what?" but it's a subtle shift in persuasion - it acts as a deterrent. And it's the slow, sneaky, stuff like that that worries me.1 point -

The last one is, of course, both the most interesting and the most surprising. At any rate, looks like an official Sharin release might be just around the corner. The Zero Escape VNs (999 and VLR) are damned good at getting people into VNs- Gameplay interjections, engaging story, great soundtrack and characters. Only the art could pose a problem, but with 95% of VNs out there being generic-as-hell anime style that shouldn't be too much of a deterrent. Agreed that the proverbial "beginner's VN" shouldn't be very long, nor should it have sex scenes- Ideally sex in this stuff would not be much of a problem, but it does change things unfortunately. As for whether it should include anime tropes and the like, I am torn. On one hand, the lack of those tropes in most cases make for a far better experience, in the other hand, including the tropes would be far more descriptive of the medium overall.1 point -

I just finished Flowers and it was... alright? I have pretty mixed feelings on it, honestly. The art and music are beautiful, and the atmosphere is just overall really, really nice. The mystery aspect is great, and I think I would have liked it a lot more if that was more prevalent. And I liked the side characters a bit. Apart from Erika, I didn't adore any of them, but they could be cute. The main characters made me really angry at times, though. I sort of hate that sort of forced melodrama, and it ended up making me outright dislike Rika and Mayuri. By the end, I just felt that Rika could be way too manipulative and Mayuri could be way too angsty at times, enough so that it sort of ruined their characters for me. The pacing could feel incredibly slow at times too, which is a bit surprising seeing as it only took me 10-11 hours to make it to the end of both routes. With all that said, it showed a lot of promise. The fact that Erika will be the main character of the next game, and the fact that both make me want to pick up the next game, in the hopes that it will be much better. Okay, I'm going to start Inganock now to recover. An utsuge written by Sakurai Hikaru? Yes please.1 point -
