  2. As an EVN developer, it's kind of frustrating to see this discussion a lot, with the same points being brought up, even when they're not true anymore (three or four years ago? Yeah, totally). I see the whole "EVN's are just wannabe JVN's and will never get anywhere until they stop copying tropes," as if that's the only thing getting made, but honestly that hasn't really been the case in a long time. Yes, there are still lotsa games like that getting made - I'm even working on one that's similar, myself - but the notion that nothing else exists is outdated. I'll give some examples: Shameless self-mention first - Highway Blossoms, a game that I helped create. It's a GxG kinetic novel set in the American southwest. Asphyxia - Genderbent British Romantic poets. Menagerie (NSFW) - I haven't played this one, so I don't want to misrepresent it in a summary, but click the link and you should see what it's about. Selenon Rising - Sci-fi/mystery/noir Caramel Mokaccino - A dating sim with a female protagonist that lets you pursue men, women, and polyamorous relationships, with various gameplay elements Yeah, most games tend to use anime art rather than "Western" art, I'll give you that. But I think that's to be expected - of course most EVN devs are JVN fans. What else would we be? EVN's haven't been even close to mainstream long enough for there to be a robust community that's never touched a Japanese VN. Even Lemmasoft, which is the largest EVN-specific community, has a long history rooted in JVN fandom. So give it time, and maybe that'll change. But considering that EVN's have only really been something that people took note of since Katawa Shoujo in 2012, I'd say we're doing pretty well for ourselves as it is. And you know what? The reason that there continue to be tons of fanservicey, ecchi games dominating the EVN market is because that's still what sells. People - SO many people - say that they want to see EVN's with a more Western style, and then so few of them follow up on it with their wallet. Success doesn't just come from making good games, it comes from people giving those good games a shot too. I'm not saying that consumers have an obligation to buy bad games to support the cause. I'm saying don't write off an entire subset of games because you haven't tried one in half a decade.

  6. I may go into this in the review I plan on eventually writing, but the fanservice and pandering comes in both visual and written forms, and feels inappropriate considering the tone of the work. Obviously I play and enjoy all sorts of VNs that pander like crazy, I don't have a problem with the concept itself, but in Flowers it felt like they were just doing the standard amount of yuri ecchi for no other reason than because they felt like they had to. Fred makes a valid point about the characters' sexual awakening causing unexpected feelings to arise within them, but this feels more like an excuse than a justification. Other works like Kindred Spirits have explored this area without being kind of creepy about it. And it feels weird and creepy specifically because it's in contrast to the tone the rest of the work takes, which is pretty serious and down to earth. It always takes me out of the work a little bit when in the midst of some serious melodrama the game pauses to have the reader ogle the girls more. Maybe it would have worked better if it was more subtle, less in-your-face about it. Basically what I'm saying is that Flowers feels like an eroge that was neutered, and they should have just went all out with it instead of half-assing the sexual aspects. That, or tone down the sexual aspects or make them subtler, but I know which you all would prefer. This isn't an especially major complaint, btw. When I made my initital remarks on twitter about this a few days ago I was only half done with the VN. The second half doesn't lean into this stuff as heavily. So it's really just a minor issue at most, I don't mean to make a mountain out of a molehill here.

  8. Of course, they themselves even admit they've made mistakes, and they do address a lot of things, just that a lot of times when they reach out to websites like here and reddit they're met with hostility and people just being plain rude, so they stop seeing as how their's not much point in it. Most of people's "complaints" about them nowadays are just vestiges from around their starting, and people looking for excuses to keep up that hatred. That's why you had people make up the whole thing with Shiny Days, why you had people misinterpret that tweet from a Giga rep to go around and complain that Baldr for sure isn't getting an uncensored version. Also funnily enough you mention that they somehow broke a promise that they'd give information about 18+ versions at Otakon, which they never said. All the said was at a later convention after there wasn't enough time at AX, and surprise, it looks like they're planning to give this information at AWA. The only real complaint I can see is that they don't pursue mosaics and their lack of communication. In the case of mosaics it's more than likely they don't see it as a wise enough investment to spend money on decensoring CGs (remember, it isn't as simple as just receiving the CGs from the JP dev and putting them in the game). As far as communication goes, most of the things they remain silent on are things the community starts to run wild speculating about regarding games that are still far off from release, so chances are they don't really care, because the concerns will be addressed closer to when the game is ready for release. Kickstarter rewards aren't released on time, because surprise, Kickstarters for anything almost never get released on time. So, no, I don't see a problem with that as long as they keep people reasonably informed. By backing a Kickstarter, you should know full well what you're getting yourself into, and the fact that the date in which you'll get what you payed for is basically anyone's guess. All in all, you can still have complaints against them without having to hate them. See, that's the difference between Sekai and other publishers. When JAST or MG slip up, you don't have people calling for their heads, spewing awful remarks, calling for boycotts of all of their products. Except in Shiny Day's case, though. People bitch and complain that Sekai is too slow translating their stuff, yet people somehow are able to wait patiently for MG or JAST titles that take even longer to get to release (Da Capo III, Sumaga, etc). Regarding the whole nutaku, 18+ thing, that's because dissenters have deluded themselves into thinking they're somehow anti-18+. I know I've been told personally that they pursue 18+ version for every title, and that the only instances in which they release a title without one is when it's a request from the developer. Almost every Japanese VN includes rape scenes with middle school girls? Wow, I must be missing something. Also, it really pisses me off when people use wording like they "took it" away. Nobody "took" anything from anyone. This had been discussed for well over a year before the announcement, and both parties were perfectly happy with how things turned out. If anything, I would want them to release my fan projects officially. The translation just for your information wasn't "finished" in April, it still has to be QCed (which is going on right now) and then another TLC pass on it.

  9. Completed Hanachirasu. In many ways I think this is pre-taste to what to come if I read muramasa. Considering hanachirasu and muramasa is written by the same dude. Narahara Really good vn honestly. I played this one before about a year or two ago. But I couldn't get into it. The damn combat and info-dumps took forever to read. The pace felt so damn odd. I just couldn't get into it. So I ended up stalling it. In meantime I read the Book of Five Rings. Surprising how many of the similarities with it and hanachirasu. Some of the info-dumps reads like just out of the book. I recommend to read the book if you feel like reading hanachirasu. Perhaps muramasa as well, as he wrote the script in that vn as well. When I started reading hanachirasu again now it was a lot more enjoyable. Rather than the standard template of fighting scenes. What movements the characters do and fight is described. The game gives you info-dumps on martial art swordplay. How it works, the different styles and how they fight. I honestly found this really refreshing. You put yourself into the system the different attacks. And you feel a lot more depth into the combat. Because you know what kind of movements the characters would do. This is makes the combat feel more like a actual martial art. I liked that realistic element. But it does make it somewhat tiresome to read at times. There is also the alt-history info-dumps.. I am not entirely satisfied in how well understood the details. So many prefectures, cites, dates etc that has some meaning. But I don't know the importance because I am not native, nor have I studied the history/geography of Japan. I have rather mixed feelings over that. I could have googled all the stuff and read myself up on most of it, but it would take a while. So i didn't bother at the time. There is a time when the time put in isn't really worth it in terms of depth. Still I found the setting enjoyable. With the difference in how Japan lost. And how the culture and such was affected. Interesting and fun. I found the setting rather silly when I read about it in the synopsis on vndb. But after reading the alt-history dump I felt it was rather nicely done and interesting. So I suppose the end result is close enough. So in terms of writing, in the end it's rather more descriptive. Goes more into details than you would normally expect. But that's more a choice of style than anything. Nothing intrinsic bad about it. But you have to be aware of what it is. More standard stuff about the vn. It has good art, music is quite good. Writing and comedy has it's own style, and it's good. Protag is an awesome asshole. Ending gave me feels, straight uguu in the stomach and made me sore in the throat. Goood stuff.

  14. What's your favourite OELVN? One Thousand Lies Will OELVNs ever be as good as Japanese VNs? No... Why are OELVNs generally considered worse than Japanese VNs? Because they are, 90% of the time. Yes, there is good OELVNs out there, (like One Thousand Lies), but it's quite rare to find them. Another issue is that most of them are made by indie developers with very small budgets, making it look rather "amateurish". I hate to say it, but the truth is, even the most amazingly written game can still look bad to most onlookers compared to the new, shiny, high budget VNs you can play instead. I think that's the biggest issue with OELVNs trying to make it in this market. And of course, the high amount of crap. (Sakura games and what not is a thing after all.) To clearify, I'm not saying art is the most important thing in games, in fact it probably is the least important when you think about it, but first impressions is a real thing, and when you compare something with amazingly fresh and stunning art to something that looks like it was made in paint, people will naturally think the one with nicer art is better, even if it actually is bad in all the other aspects. What are the attributes that make OELVNs stand out (in a positive way) from their Japanese counterparts? They are usually written very differently, and this makes for a cool, new experience. Recommend a random (relatively unknown) OELVN I'm just going to recommned One Thousand Lies, because it's really good, and everyone should play it. (And it's free!)

  15. Or maybe you could try to learning Japanese more in order to read more fanastic VN which is untranslated (And to help you get through against bleak winter) instead of just waiting the releases from those three, like for example Gin'iro Haruka, Saihate no Ima, Hello Lady, and Draculius. Of course you will, if you True VN Fan™ (In this case, I'd like to read your opinion about some VN that you read in Japanese here). If not, good luck on your Japanese study at bleak winter later. Okay, I think for the thread my answer here would be I kind of agree with RikiSanic here that Dovac (Or to fulfill OP ROTK obsession here, emperor Qian) was kind of hiding himself out there. Maybe the staffs gave some harsh warning to their boss after some chaos at his Twitter earlier there (And possibly demoted to low rank employee there). After all, I think Qian name was removed from staff list definitely didn't had influence much to Sekai for now (At least for now), because they're still had gave some progress each week for their project.

  16. That pool is biased, just like every single pool made on these forums Please, for the love of gods, don't use the term "OELVN". They are simply called western vn's. It's hard to compare japanese and western vn's; it's like trying to compare tangerines and oranges; yes - they are fruits, they look similiar but they taste entirely different; in fact, they shouldn't be compared, out of obvious reasons. Western vn's will propably continue to fall flat in general comparison to their japanese counterparts; it won't change anytime soon. That said, when you look at certain attempts and examples, quality western vn's often surprass japanese vn's by a great degree, both as a storytelling medium, art and genre of computer games; it's because they aren't handicapped by the very same cancer audience, which invented them in the first place. This means more freedom and less restrictions on what they can be and less pressure from the playerbase. That makes them a far more powerful tool for expression, whilst the japanese vn's are more often tailored exactly towards the tastes if it's main consumer base - otaku crowds. The real problem with western vn's is that they tend to copy japanese vn's way too much and that is, ironically, what hurts them the most. When the time comes and devs finally understand there's no need for that, only then western vn's will have a chance to surprass their japanese counterparts. I just love how you placed Winged Cloud at the very bottom in regards to potential future Despite what some people say, VA11 HALL-A is actually a traditional visual novel, one reminiscent of good ol' PC-98 games; one, where drink mixing replaced traditional choice making in a clever manner. Have you even played Solstice? Cinders? Along the Edge? Ori, Ochi, Onoe? The Dandelion Girl? Everlasting Summer? Analogue? VA11 HALL-A? Her Tears Were My Light? No? Then you already have your hands full and that's just the tip of an iceberg.

  22. This would be a great point if it wasn't exactly what I was talking about in my initial post though. That is, making these sweeping conclusions that aren't actually accurate. None* of the five games that I listed are "generic high school slice of life" stories, set in Japan or otherwise. -Highway Blossoms is about a roadtrip across the southwestern United States on a treasure hunt, and includes lots of national landmarks like the Grand Canyon, Arches, and more. -Asphyxia is technically about school girls, but very little if any (it's been a while since I've read it) of the story actually takes place in a school. More importantly, the characters are based off of prominent (well, relatively) figures in Western literature. -Menagerie I once again don't want to speak for and misrepresent. -Selenon Rising is an investigative mystery story about an alien invasion, which is pretty far removed from high school drama. -Caramel Mokaccino admittedly focuses on school life, but it's university life as opposed to high school, and deals more with adult struggles (finding a job, establishing independence, etc.) than adolescent ones. At least to my understanding, since the game isn't out yet. And that's only 5 games off the top of my head. There are plenty of others out there - and even some of pretty nice quality. Yeah, at the moment there's no sprawling, multi-part fantasy story with volumes worth of worldbuilding and stuff, but a big part of that is because 99% of EVN devs (and I only leave that 1% open as a margin of error; I don't know of any exceptions) are indie devs or are backed by small-ish companies, and don't really have the budget to make something huge. I've been pretty open about the fact that Highway Blossoms was made on a budget of just about $10k, and that came with a lot of discounts from working with friends and people we know. The reason you're seeing most EVN's be rather short with less branching, as opposed to vast, epic stories, are because that's largely what's affordable to make. VN's in general are a niche market, and EVN's don't have the luxury of being able to charge a premium like popular JVN's can. For most developers, it's not feasible to sink your entire life's savings into a game that will recoup a fraction of the cost. Making shorter games with lower overhead that manage to break even or just barely profit is currently the safest and most stable way to do it. There are some groups/people like Hanako Games that make a living entirely off of VN and dating sim sales, but they're few and far between and are generally individuals or pairs, as opposed to fully-staffed production companies.

  23. @XReaper I am sorry if my comment came off as a bit rude. I do understand what you mean. Japanese visual novels are better in a way. It's hard for me to get into them though, but I have been playing Clannad and some others. I guess what I am upset about honestly is, as you said, how OELVN's are flooded with garbage and yet that garbage is what's popular. And yes, a good number of us dev's are as talented as as the ero companies in Japan, but I believe we are growing. Like you I wish for OELVN'S to stop copy Japanese visual novels. As a creator myself it is hard I admit, but I'm hoping I'll be able to create something different. I will say I do like some of the BxG stories (like Clannad) as they help me with new ideas, but I don't want to copy them or have overused tropes. Sadly Steam is filled with a lot of bad vn's or those basically copying Japanese visual novels. People are 100% right in that creators need to do their own things and I also agree we have a lot to learn with our storytelling skills, but I think it's getting better.

  24. Not the whole ero content, just some part of it, apparently about lolis. That's why they keep silence about 18+ Maitetsu. It won't happen in any way. I don't believe even MG could risk with this title uncensored. But SP's stuff have to say it clear and loud and don't give us a false hope or base for conspiracy theories. I don't wany them to be the bad guys. Almost every japan VN include such thing. I was calm and patient for two years. They have to optimize their cataloge and actually start to release their games. Look at Chrono Clock TL. 34.44% ! And they going to release it in January 2017 according to VNDB? With adult version on Nutaku? Um... yeah SakuSaku was 100% in April and in July Sekai took it away, so when do we exept to see the oficial English translation? In what year? This. And we can't forget about Baldr Sky's drama. I really hope Nutaku's money will get us a full version of the title. In not so distant future. Again, I do not like to accuse anyone without solid proof. But if the company management doesn't want to hear all of their fans, without exception, they have to deal with the negative public resonance. Or speculations. Silence breeds misunderstanding. Misunderstanding breeds anger. Anger creates resentment. A resentful people do not buy the games.

  25. Oh right I agree, the most famous OELVN uses anime art, the most sucessfull OELVN kickstarter campaigns used anime art, including the most famous one Katawa Shoujo, which released quite a bit of Art Books throughout the years:

  28. People misconstrued this without even checking anything. The staff for Shiny Days, not School Days, was made up of part of the same crew that did the original (whom started Sekai Project), but not entirely the same. For example, Peter explicitly mentions a translator, yet if you check the credits, you'll see the translator isn't the same as in the first, and is someone not even affiliated with Sekai at all. And even then, there's no reason to bash someone for taking it safe when having their name on the credits for a game that involves the main character raping a middle school girl might get them in legal trouble in their country of residence. It's not because someone was super "stingy" about ero content, or that Sekai Project's original staff have some vendetta against sex content, in fact the Days games are pretty sex-heavy games, so I can't see them starting a fan-project for something like that if they refused to touch sex scenes. Well, they have no reason to like or even care about the population of fans that scream down their throat at every little opportunity that presents itself. They obviously don't make a dent on sales, so there's no reason for them to actively seek out to explain perfectly legitimate decisions to people who aren't going to change their mind. It's just like the asshats that always complain when a fan-translation goes official (no this isn't actually limited to Sekai Project). I have no reason to explain to them why it's a good decision, because if they'd rather translators work for free so that they can get a game slightly faster, then I don't see any point in trying to change their mind. These people don't have any significant effect on localization sales.

I think PP would be better off checking out his own localization company first instead of badmouthing others. Especially since I remember some rants from him in the Jast forums too. None of Sekai's releases I've played so far were buggy crash festivals or had untranslated parts because of a lack of proof reading. Can't exactly say the same for Jast's releases.
