  1. VNs are typically shit because of JP writers

  2. Couldn't find another Flowers discussion thread so I think I put my own little review here since I finished Flowers now. I probably didn't get a true end since I just ended up in the main menu without any further comment, but I was in the last chapter and that's definitely enough for me. Overall, I think the VN really tried to be... but somehow ended up more like... The art wasn't bad but far too bright for my tastes. I vastly prefer the darker color tones of IG's other titles. The music was somehow pretty dull and definitely not my cup of tea and I replaced it pretty soon with my own. Story wise it starts extremely slow with little to nothing happening except some character introductions. The protagonist girl Suou is easily hetare 3.0 with neither confidence nor any character strength. Not as bad as Takumi from Chaos,Head, but pretty close. And unfortunately, she never seemed to grow over the course of the story. She's pretty much the same super shy and timid person at the end of the story like at the start. Most of the story is plain slice of life, solely interrupted by some micro dramas followed by some short investigation scenes that had more similarities with a look-up copy protection from the nineties than an actual serious investigation. The answers ranged from far-fetched and silly to just plain wrong. Memo to Innocent Grey: The number of christians in the USA is higher than the whole population of Italy. And the bad ends themselves were as crappy and cheap as it gets. The best parts of the VN were the interaction of Suou with the Sasaki twins and Yuzuriha. The worst parts were the ones with the so called 'romance interests' Ricca and Mayuri. There was absolutely zilch chemistry between them and their whole affair seemed to consist of distrust and maliciousness with some ultra poor jealousy dramas like... I'd even dare to say that the VN doesn't even deserve the yuri or even shoujo AI tag since the whole 'romance interaction' between Mayuri and Ricca was pretty much just bitching around. Even the worst Sono Hanabira title would be still a mile better than this one in that category. That's not to say that there wouldn't have been other characters that would have worked. Yuzuriha would have been perfect and I'm really pissed that she didn't get a route. She had a great chemistry with her and she had the right personality to make Suou more confident. Mayuri and Ricca however were simply terrible matches for Suou. And then the choices *sigh*. Meaningless and confusing choices were always a plague in Innocent Grey titles but it was never as bad as in Flowers. The majority of them were simply absolutely pointless, but they appeared so often that I somehow got the impression that their only purpose was to check if the reader is still awake. In general Flowers appeared more as a side project from IG (and it most likely was) since everything was just less detailed and more half-assed than the KnS series. Heroine ratings: Yuzuriha >> Ichigo > Ringo > Nerine >> Erika > Suou >>> Mayuri > Ricca Final rating: 6/10 (It only gets so much because I liked Yuzuriha and the Sasaki twins) As should be clear from my review, I wasn't particularly fond of Flowers and it's certainly the weakest IG title I've read by a long mile. I therefore most likely skip the other parts of it, there's simply better stuff to read. Although I might make an exception for the third one since it's centered around all my favorite characters Yuzuriha, Nerine and the Sasaki twins.

  3. It's a self-centered community that produces and consumes everything it creates. Just like with inbreeding, quality ultimately detoriates with time, unless you'll take in new blood (i.e. "have babies" with completely new and fresh concepts or think outside the box); either that, or you will allow actual writers to write and adapt their stories, instead of letting weebs go willy-nilly.

  4. seems i fail to get how having japanese writers automatically means the title(s) will be of good, or satisfactionary quality, seriously i just dont get it. them stemming from a specific nationality does in the end mean shit, because it solely depends on one having talent/skills or lacking these, regardless where he/she hails from; plus we all know there´s also a more than large amount of truly bad writers roaming the lands of nihon, so yeah that´s that. no idea why or when this screwed up perception came up of anything japan being superior by default, be it voice acting, writing, settings or whatsnot. sure, if included does make it apparently more easy to appeal/being marketed, but works such as valhalla, most stuff by mouse or others whom are still bend on using their own brains and ideas, despite common believes, keep proving them delusionists wrong. edit: it´s undoubtably a right step in the more right direction when starting to hire writers who actually are ones, not just some clueless weaboos trying to come up with something, without knowing anything. edit2: and always those same hollow and borderline dishonest excuses, like "we didn´t want to make the setting japanese at the beginning, but it does fit the story better", "the op is a japanese one, because it does fit the story better", "they have japanese names, because it gives off a more authentic vibe". holy hell please stop. just admit the sole fucking reason is for the product to appeal to a more broad audience aka putting a possible increase of sales before originality/quality. seriously those are just abunch of self-apologetic excuses to somehow justify emulating the popular, instead of try gambling abit and coming up with real works of their own. no matter what, oelvns will always stay oelvns and never ever turn into their japanese pendants, forwhy it´s the very nature of oelvns, because they are created by non-japanese studios in the first place, defining them as such. on another note what´s even the point in making oelvns when its devs start going for japanese artists (writers/voice acting/visual-artists)?

    Tales of Cold Steel 2

I also live in Europe and it doesn't hinder me in buying my games from the US. But if you like to pay an additional 20€ after waiting two more months, you can wait I guess lol. Not my fetish though. The DLC for the first part was probably the worst DLC for any game I ever bought. And it didn't change at all for the second, huh. Who buys this crap? The most insulting thing is that you can't even buy swimsuits which are literally the only reason I still play modern JRPGs. No, you have to unlock them ingame at approximately the moment you get your Platinum Trophy! FU Falcom, Y U no basic game design?? Why do you give me the swimsuits after I already had to look 60h at clothed females and literally 100%'ed the whole game? This does no make any sense! And people are wondering why I call the Cold Steel series kusoges, when they can't even get the only thing right a waifu game needs to have. If you turn a well-written character-centric series like Trails in the Sky into a shitty dating sim, at least give me fucking swimsuits, you retards! Seriously, please Falcom, if you decide to shit on your legacy and to only make soft porn games as of now, at least stop being so arrogant that you think I would actually believe that this could be a decent JRPG just because I can't unlock the swimsuits until after the game, and just have the decency to let me fap to it. Since that's literally the only merit Falcom games have left.

    H-code for Enkou Shoujo

You are not using the regex in ITH but in TA. ^^ You probably have a "Plugins" folder in your TA main directory. You can probably also find a "Replacements" folder in there in which a "names.txt" text files exists. This is used for regular expressions. Normally, it's used to substitute kanji names with romaji (hence the name), but you can use it for any substitution purpose really, which also includes simply the removing of garbage characters. Every line in the names.txt is a regular expression with the regex first, then a tab, then the substitution. In my very simple examples here, the substitution would simply be nothing. If you haven't installed TAplugin, you can also use the build-in substitution function of the core TA. It's essentially the same, but this time the file is located in the "dictionaries" folder as "UserDict.txt" and you can even use a GUI menu in TA itself to edit it (Tools --> Substitutions..."). The difference between names.txt and UserDict.txt is when and how it's applied. All UserDict expressions are read into memory at the time you open TA. If you have too much expressions in your file, TA needs longer to start up. But that also means that the UserDict.txt substitutions are way faster than the ones you define in names.txt. UserDict substitutions are applied before TA does anything else with the clipboard string. That means you won't notice it. (Before silly me knew about this feature, I always wondered why TA does some black magic with certain phrases. I later noticed I unknowingly installed a predefined UserDict ^^). TAplugin substitutions can be computed before parsing or before translating. That means that the "Original Text" window will always contain the unaltered string (except you also use UserDict, be aware of that) while the translations will always be computed after applying the regex (obviously). You can choose whether to do the substitution before or after parsing the string with Mecab and JParser. The option is in your Taskbar Tray, search for the TAplugin icon. I usually use names.txt because I like to have the option to (de-)activate specific regular expressions on the fly. You can deactivate everything by commenting out the line with an * and saving the text file with your editor of choice. Since the UserDict file is loaded into memory when TA initializes itself and not every time the clipboard updates, you can only deactivate substitutions as a whole during runtime. By the way, VNR also has this feature. But it's a little bit clunkier here because the expressions are not saved in a text file but on the VNR server. TAHelper also uses a text file for substitutions. I don't think anyone uses this tool anymore though.

  10. Heh. Yeah, I'm also looking forward to Autumn, since my character ranking is pretty close to yours, including finding those top four far and away more interesting than all of the rest. I agree with a lot of the stuff that bothered you, especially not finding either the giant pile of choices or the mysteries to be a pleasant experience. The way both the melodramas and the romance all played out felt oddly real to me, though, especially in comparison to basically every VN I've ever read. It's no storybook romance, and it's frankly rather unsatisfying to read about as a result, hence why I've been advising people to stay away from it if they're looking for romance, but it is nonetheless somehow very believable. At any rate, I was in it for the melodrama, so it ended up with 4/5 for me, but I'm completely unsurprised to see people who don't enjoy that shit (and, really, most people don't; there's probably something wrong with me) giving it a rating like yours.

  11. Well, I finally got around to finishing Tokage no Shippo Kiri, and damn, it was pretty darn good. I definitely have to get around to playing the fandisk soon. The game was really unique, and very interesting. I was expecting a rather shallow guro nukige, and got a tragic love story instead, which was really cool. The game was well written, the art was very nice (and damn, it had so many CGs considering it's length... Cyclet really pulled out all the stops in the CG/ art department for this one.) The characters were great, especially Shuu and Monobe, (that crazy bitch, lol.) The plot twists in the game kept taking me by surprise, and the dark atmosphere mixed with the romance was a very interesting combo. The game overall just left me very satisfied with the way things were wrapped up in the routes, and I liked how you kind of have to play all the routes to truly understand reasons behind the characters' actions etc. (I was actually considering skipping Manaka's route. Glad I didn't, as the game would have felt a hell of a lot less impactful without it.) I'm really liking these short Cyclet games. There is still a few that I haven't played yet that look interesting, so I'll have to get around to doing those.

  12. Well, people have different opinions, nothing wrong with that. Some liked it, some did not. (This is pretty much the norm for all games tbh.) I personally enjoyed the game a lot, and recommend playing it. The game was funny and although it contained large amounts of slice of life moments, it still kept the story somewhat in focus throughout the whole game. The characters were pretty interesting, and I found the backstory of the main character and the mystery surrounding R-ne especially intriguing. The art is pretty, the animations are very nice, and the cliffhanger at the end had me hungry for more. (As in, I don't see it as a bad thing. I'm looking forward to vol.2, and it is coming out in about a month or so, so you won't have to wait very long for the continuation.)

  14. like i did already say above, what´s the fucking point in creating oelvns in the first place, if all you do is get japanese staff-members to replace those of other nationalities, which causes the product to end up being a oelvn only in name. that´s freaking ridiculous. edit: and regarding the "japanese being more experienced", why is that so? mostly because the majority of theirs starts out making doujinshi first, both free and cheap ones, to gather the much needed experience before bothering to go after sth bigger. this is something the west apparently also lacks, while there are some, alot on the other hand just go pro from zero, always justifying it with high costs and blah the fucking blah. just cut corners, no newbie to the medium needs to have his/her debut works to consist of hd-visuals, voice acting or whatever there is that keeps the non-existent budget skyrocking. sorry for me loosing my composure, but stuff like this is not only infuriating, but also depressing

  15. Simple statistics. Japanese have been writing VNs for a long time. Thus, a Japanese writer has a higher probability of producing a proper story than what we have seen so far. Similar to the voice acting in the early 2000s. English Voice dubbers over anime were horrible while Japanese ones were much better. Why? Because they have much more experience. We are not saying Japanese writer = Better writing. We won't know until we can read what he has written. All we are doing is hoping that due to the higher probability, a good story will be produced. Here's an example: Lets say we have some indigenous sport in some faraway land. Are you going to bet on the locals to win or some group of random foreigner. Like you said Race/Nationality whatever doesn't matter. BUT we can infer the potential experience and skill from this information. Another example is this: Malays have biologically better eyesight than Chinese. If I wanted to pick 10 people have have the best average eyesight I would pick 10 Malays rather than 10 chinese. Of course like you said. The BEST WAY is to of course just measure the eyesight of people and pick 10 with perfect eyesight. But if we are not able to do that, statistically we have a better chance with 10 Malays. Back to topic, Japanese VN writers have a lot of experience in writing better VN stories than sakura writers. Thus, we have a higher probability. All we are doing is hoping this probability holds true. NOT immediately associating this new writer to automatically be a good one.

    Maid VN

Elysion is probably the epitome of Maid VNs. It's an indepth-discussion about the concept of Maids. What is their purpose? What is their goal? What responsibilities do they bear and what are their rights? Are they a necessity or just luxury? Can you live without a Maid and if, is a life without a Maid even worth living? Every character route has two endings, a waifu end and a maid end which in itself is the inevitable conclusion to the player's answers to the important philosophical questions the game raises in the course of the game's story. A quick note of warning though: This game is best played together with your personal maid. If you don't have any, and you realize that you never will, you may feel the uncontrollable urge to commit sudoku after reading this novel.

  24. This is definitively an eye-opener, thank you for sharing this info. I never saw anybody on Fuwa mentioning this. I was examining the twitter account of that studio, and that game that is in development, it definitvely looks better than regular Sakura stuff. I can't say if it's really any good but I personally find indie games kind of interesting so this could be good. Now I can see why (maybe) they are lately releasing Sakura titles in such speed. This is quite something new to me.

  25. I don't think many people noticed this at all really and it will take a long time for most people to notice. Yes its a step outside of the field of anime content but i'm not sure if largely happened as a result of sakura clicker and a exploration of that. Some of the weird experiments we may see them do with their sakura titles might be related to what they are trying to do with their other studio and their newer brand with less stain of its reputation can stay safer meanwhile. Since they have no real big personal site or anything of that such it feels as like as much as the disconnect that we see from sekai to denpasoft really really trying to separate the brands almost. I guess they could be cashing in on their vns before making a full move to non anime style games.

  26. @Infernoplex Thank you for providing these screenshots. With this, we can say with certainty that the Refine release has a new translation which is far inferior to the old one. At this point I see no reason in buying the Steam release. Well, aside from financing the potential release of other entries in the series of course. Oh boy, I feel I have seen this many times before: >releasing an inferior version of something that is already available >number of sales will decide whether other (actual new) games will also be released >"Sales fell short of expectations. Apparently nobody wants this."

  31. How many of you know that Winged cloud has another studio ? Also I think that we will get more vn games I'm to blame for at least some of that. Like the tons of indie/doujin releases in japan we have a massive international scale in what we consider the "west" quality might be lower with less well planned out titles due to budget etc but people can make different things work out for them all over the world. For example huniepop which isn't a vn but has some of the same style and anime style characters largely featured indonesian & polish artists. I've seen Indonesian vn teams cropping up latly and Philippines etc. These teams are more likely to be able to make small releases work for them an expand cause of global economy:D Yes some of those might be in it for the money but some might be intrested in doing more thought provoking titles but are avoiding the risk as of yet. Incidentally I made a Kinetic Yaoi/Trap vn published by MangaGamer on a budget of $1300 total without crowdfunding. As an adult only non steam release. With the aid of one of fuwan novel semi regulars Ryechu. There is no Fuwan review because no one reviews Yaoi. Now I've got 2 new artists on top of the 1 already have and am tippling the length of my next title still its not very serious story yet. If i wanted to only make money I would of gone a safe ecchi steam and adult route but we just went adult no hands barred.

  34. Visual Novel Translation Status (09/24/2016) First, sorry for late posting my VNTS Review here. As for the title, why we don't ask to our beloved half ghost gardener from Youmo Konpaku of Touhou fame here for the resemblance (Although I made it maid instead of the gardener here)? Okay, I think for this week it's kinda hard to found the title here, but I finally found it and for the explanation the phantom part was from Tokyo Twilight one (Phantom also mean Ghost), human part was from Harmonia VN which from the picture it was human girl, and maid part came from Sakura Maid. Enough about my lame explanation here, and welcome to this week VNTS Review. Oh, right now I facing some problem, just like admin Tay here if you ask me why I deliver this very late. As for this week update, there's not much as usual here after Mangagamer gave big update last week. While for both of Sekai and Fan Translation one they still give usual updates here. As for Please Bang My Wife release, once again no comment ie I had gave my comment about it enough. Sekai Project, they still gave the update as usual but this week it was quite interesting that they managed to upped Chrono Clock progress which for this week they managed to upped the progress by almost 5% (The Kickstarter might be the reason here, and it was 38.28% translated). Oh, for another two usual here Maitetsu was 35.95% translated and Tenshin Rahman past halfway translated (51.78% translated). As for irregular update, Hoshimemo was at 45% retranslated for the progress. As for their release, I always said whatever to any Sakura games here, but it's interesting that they release Sakura Maid as free games here I guess. As for they had 2 panels instead of one, it'll be interesting to looking forward, although I wouldn't expect something big for now though. For fan translation, this week there's some usual one that gave update, and now Loverable will join here because they managed to gave the progress weekly. For the progress, Bishoujo Mangekyou was at 76% edited, 71% QC-ed, and 30% proofread; Tsui Yuri was at 78% translated and 71% edited; Majokoi was at 43.1% translated, 31.6% edited, and 15.7% TLC; and Loverable progress was at 15.75% translated (60.44% translated for common route), 0.92% edited, and 1.38% TLC-ed here. As for Alice VN partial patch release here, good luck although to be honest I'd never keep my eyes on it though (It's otome games by the way, and I think it would be another good addiction to translated otome games there. Oh, and for reminder here our Ittaku translated three quarter (75%) of the twins route from Clover Days once again. In regard of Harmonia VN, looks like my guess was right that it would be short VN now that VNDB categorized the length as short there. I still not play this yet, but at least I knew that we got Mizuhashi Kaori as seiyuu there (The premise was at some sort of dystopian/crapsack world in the future once again). As for the releases from this section, one of the release was VN which happened to be one part of the title there (The premise was like fighting against supernatural thing), and another was the short VN with wild west setting which using comic bubble as interface which remind me of Littlewith VNs (Romanesque and Quartett come to mind). For the most interesting news here, we'll had the finale of Chu Singura (Chapter 4 and 5) available on Steam there in near future there although I won't be certain here though. They also will came with the patch that fix the typo there, and for last word here guess finally NextNinja managed to bring ChuSingura translated here if they release last chapters (After earlier 2 kickstarters failure here). I think that's all for this week, and sorry for being late once again. As for next week, since admin Tay said that they'll had late VNTS, guess I'll try to make the early VNTS Review here (Also with Atlanta commentary there). See you next week. PS - Like Decay, I also hoping that Mangagamer will announce Sengoku Koihime if only they had the design was slightly better to me compared to Koihime Musou (Also with the potential to entering Steam).

    Psychological horror vn?

not much time and no idea what your preferred length is, anyway here to name a few: rasen kairou2 (reading its prequel first is not really required, though i´d suggest you doing so) omega no shikai series (mindfuck par excellence & an awesome cast) oujo no abbaddon (welcome to kana-torture-wonderland, great fucks, great deaths - go for it!) ts:nonuple9 (who am i, who is she and why is this happening, aka heil phsycal abuse!) momiji wa kurenaku sono mi o somete (the sin he could no let go, coming back to haunt him hard) kurai nichiyoubi (primarily aimed at girls, though it´s more unisexual, even in death...) shingakkou -noli me tangere- (physical rape, mental rape, dreams getting raped, hopes are being raped - basically saying a bloody manifesto of how to screw a person into hating the world. father august approves of this) ichiyakitan (you, some rotten chick & no fucking clue what´s going on) kyojin-tachi (it´s free, goes back and forth and will boggle your mind) stuff by flying shine, such as umi kara kuru mono soramimi x DIAMOND (cant get anymore weird, cryptic & surreal + a good amount of evilness. trust me there) & the rather short, old, but nonetheless pretty cool akanemachi kitan (of men & demons try living with a puddle of blood that surrounds them) edit. almost forgot mentioning w-standard,wonderland, a title that i´m currently reading myself and which turned out being quite enjoyable so far, despite it´s seemingly not finished yet, with more installments still to be released. also the title is no really horror/psychological in a classical manner, more a little weird mix of some (dystopian future and suspense), though it has its moments (a little clumsily written, but since i´m no prose-nazi - fuck it) edit2: how could i not name the one and only, liar-soft´s kusarihime, which should totally fit into what you´re looking for. beware of the red snow! Note: some of the ones mentioned above are pure horror, whilst others are not, but more on a psychological level and few do consist of both characteristica. also, this list is by no means definite, it´s just me believing you have already read some of the more modern/prominent works, such as subahibi, higurashi, fairytale requiem & suchalike.

Most people have the notion that women are these pure and beautiful creatures who do nothing out of the ordinary, but the NTR genre pushes it out of bounds by mixing the powerful emotion of jealousy and depression to create a setting where your typical woman is now a lot hornier and sex crazed than the male protagonist. It's like an escape in real life because the current social outlook in real life is that men are perverts and are always thinking about sex. In NTR, it's different. You now have the girl who is hornier and is willing to surrender herself and become someone's plaything. There is this old saying: "Men want to sleep with the whore but want to marry the Madonna." NTR reverses that and makes the Madonna, the Mary Sue, the Yamato Nadeshiko, the prim and proper wife the whore and the mixture of corruption, exhibitionism, and voyeurism spices it up and doesn't make it as boring as your typical vanilla VN where it's just a meet n fuck, happily ever after setting. P.S. Thanks to @Nosebleed for summarizing the types of NTR. Glad I didn't have to write a couple more paragraphs for that.

    Snow Sakura

Snow Sakura Licensed by JAST VNDB Summary My name is Tachibana Yuuji, a regular student with no particular plans for the future - until my parents left for Hawaii on a business trip last fall, leaving me in the care of my uncle in the wintry countryside of Hokkaido. Small-town life on Japan's northern island didn't have time to get dull, as from the moment I got there I was reunited with my cousin and childhood friend Saki. She's pretty demanding, but when I'm hanging out with her and her school friends I don't mind; as I get close to them I feel like I'm finding a meaning in life that I didn't know I was looking for. Legend says there is a flower that blooms here in the depth of winter... as the twilight deepens and a snowflake melts in the palm of my hand, I stand with a beautiful girl by my side. Will we be able to uncover its mystery in this fleeting moment? Ending Guideline / Suggested Route Order There are five main heroines in Snow Sakura, with no restricted play order implemented or Bad Endings. You may start with any heroine you want. Route Guideline Tachibana Saki Good End Souya Misaki Good End Hiyama Kozue Good End Kisaragi Rei Good End Souya Misato Good End Attribution This walkthrough is based on info attained on Gamefaqs.com (Created by Justnar) with some adjustments made by me.
