  2. Don't know much about the fighter myself, but it seems to be an enhanced version (CROSS or something, it's called I think) of the game that's going to be brought over. AFAIK it contains huge spoilers for the VN.

  3. ITHVNR is the program used to extract the text from the visual novels and it's the same one used on the software Visual novel reader. Mecab is a parser and unidict is a dictionary. It's a bit hard to understand what you want to do. Do you want to read visual novels parsing the text? Then, you should use chiitrans with ith and use ithvnr if you cant hook the text with ITH and you dont have an h-code for the novel either. Why use chiitrans? Because the parser is pretty good and you don't need to download anything else aside from the program itself, you can even hook the novels with chiitrans itself (I don't recommend it) At the same time you can use Translation Aggregator as an alternative for parsing the text, since you can use mecab and jparser at the same time as parser (chiitrans uses its own parser I don't know if it's based on jparser or mecab but it works pretty well.) EDIT: I forgot to say, the parser of VNR is atrocious (it looks bad, it's clunky and worst of all the parser itself is pretty bad and inaccurate, don't use it, )

So I came across this particular video featuring the pachinko version of Umineko no Naku Koro ni, and I thought it would be a good time to bring up my thoughts about the animation of these 'Naku Koro ni' spin-offs. Even though Higurashi no Naku Koro ni was successfully adapted into anime form, along with all its various spin-offs, there were still a few side stories that never saw the light of day, including the very important Yoigoshi-hen, featuring an adult Mion. Spoilers ahead, naturally. As you can see, it's a pretty decent animated version of the arc, and it was a shame that we never got to see an anime version of this pachinko game because, as it is, this is the closest to a Yoigoshi-arc anime we're gonna get. And the thing is, I wouldn't bring this up if it's just about that small little arc that the studios might actually animate in the near future. As I mentioned, there's also the Umineko pachinko game. As you remember, Umineko's anime stopped dead at Chapter IV of the visual novel for good reasons, and it's a pity that terrible production nullified any chance of the other chapters from being animated. As it happens, however, the pachinko version does animate the rest of the visual novel, albeit in small bite-size quantities. Heavy spoilers this time, more so than the previous video. Don't watch the video if you haven't completed at least half of Chapter VI of the visual novel. The thing I like about the animation, aside from the fact the rest of the Umineko story finally got animated at all, is how it over-exaggerated the expression in a very hammy way. Now, this can go both ways. In this case, I found it humorous, and it really suits that particular villain's hammy and over-the-top personality. However, in some of the other Umineko pachinko animations, the exaggeration is taken to a ridiculous level, to the point where their faces are... downright fugly. Take a look. Spoilers from Chapter III. Now, something you might notice is the level of details the animation has over Studio DEEN's production. That being said, this is a trivial improvement compared to the distorted face of Beatrice. When the face was distorted in the last video, it was honestly not that bad. But in this video, along with several other examples I found on YouTube, it's just an eyesore to look at. Like, even Studio DEEN's Beatrice looks a lot better than that, and that's saying a lot. That being said, what I'm trying to say is that, for someone to put in the effort to animate Umineko's other chapters, it's a shame they devoted said effort to pachinko of all places instead of making a full-fletched anime reboot. It's pretty clear, IMHO, that they're doing it for the money, and it's a shame that this is the closest we could get to a Umineko anime sequel. But I do hope that the existence of such animation would at least guarantee just a small, tiny hope that an anime reboot might be possible in the distant future... hopefully. My prayers are with our lord and savior, ufotable. Funny thing about the living meme, Hugh Mungus himself, there was actually an interview conducted by H3H3 Productions where Hugh addressed the whole situation about the crazy feminist. Take a look:

  5. What do you mean? They talked about Maitetsu at a Denpasoft panel, which basically confirms an adult release. They said they have been working hard to make it happen. They said they think they have a solution that will make "everybody happy", with emphasis on "everybody". They didn't announce that they were going to talk about it, then just not do it, and not publically comment. They said it wasn't ready to announce yet, and they wanted to finalize it. They even said they hoped to have something to announce by the end of the year. That doesn't sound like an empty promise or their previous terrible communication. It's not as definitive as I would like, but it's a lot better than not even knowing if they're going to bother to try.

  7. I'm going to translate Aiyoku no Eustia from where the partial patch by Yandere Translations finished. I've run into a technical difficulty dumping the games scripts and could use some helping working through it: -I extracted the arc files using "arc unpacker 0.2.1", this worked fine as far as I can tell (images extracted this way look fine). -When I then try to dump the extracted scripts (with names like "aiy00010", and no file extensions) using the "bgi script tools" found on tlwiki.org, I receive an error from python: "Error: 'cp932' codec can't decode byte 0xf1 in position 1: illegal multibyte sequence." -I have tried changing the code page of the console window I use to launch the python script to no avail. Relevant details: Windows 7 64bit; Python 3.5; Japanese system locale; Console run as administrator.

    Kimi e Okuru, sora no hana

    I have been wanting to write something about this VN since the second I finished it, but never actually got aroud to it. Now with the TL announced, I figured I might as well write something. Might be a good thing to note that I absolutely adore this game, and it is probably my favorite VN of all time, so I'm a bit biased, just saying. So, first, an introduction. Kimi e okuru, sora no hana is a nakige made by Cabbit. The game is about ghosts, people who can see them, and their attempt at a life together in a special school that trains its students to handle their powers. The main character, Shuuya, has been able to see ghosts since he was a child, and he has always wondered why. When the mysterious ghost Matsuri approaches him with the offer of a school that can teach him about his powers, he just couldn't say no. As he gets to the school he meets many others with similar powers, and they all seem equally eager to learn what their powers are. But, there is a slight twist. People with these powers are not the only students in the academy. About a third of the student body is also made up by ghosts. Now, this is a big deal, because, well, they are ghosts. Dead people with psychic abilities isn't exactly your ideal classmate. Naturally this causes some disturbance in the classes, but the presence of the ghosts is an absolute condition for the school to operate, and everyone has to handle it if they are going to attend the academy. (Even the headmaster is a ghost, and boy is she an... interesting woman, lol.) The game is a nakige like I said, but it also has some other elements as well. The entire game isn't constantly story driven, and so people who hate "generic school settings" might be slightly annoyed at certain points in the game, even though these "plotless" moments aren't a dominating factor. Because of the way the game is structured, even normal days at school might suddenly turn into something dramatic, because of the relationship between the humans and the ghosts, as well as the ever present danger of a ghost going berserk. Still, there is definitely a decent amount of slice of life moments in this game, though I found them very enjoyable because of the rather unique take on the setting. Despite the fact that we have a "generic school setting", half of the students in the class being ghosts makes for a different experience. First of, it opens up for new types of humor, (people can't see ghosts, so if you walk alone with one, people think you are jut talking to yourself, for instane,) more drama (there is a lot of tension between everyone because of the ghosts), not to mention that the romance itself in this VN is very unique, as the ghosts can't actually touch anything solid. (I mean, they are ghosts.) So this opens up for a very fresh and interesting take on these overused elements. In addition, the game itself is 10-30 hours long, and with 5 heroine routes with at least 2 endings each as well as a common route, this means the routes aren't too long, so the "boring slice of life" moments in between the story is rather minimal in comparison to other, longer games. Still, despite all of that, you will have to suck it up and get through some slice of life if you want to play this game. The game has 3 human heroines and 2 ghost heroines, as well as a few other short, special routes that you can unlock upon completing certain endings. The human routes are more similar to what you usually find in general nakige/ charage, and An's route is probably a bit more similar to a moege route at times, but all three human routes still use the ghosts as a part of their main story. The ghost routes, however, are very different from the standard stuff, and on top of that, the two ghost routes are very different from each other, making them both feel quite unique. Also, I have to point out that Matsuri is the "main heroine" in this game, and so she has 3 endings instead of the standard 2, and is a lot more in focus during the common route. Some people might not like "main heroines". I personally really liked Matsuri, but personally would have liked a bit more focus on some of the other routes, like Sekka's and Hinagiku's. Still, Matsuri is a really great heroine. When I first played the game, I started with the Sekka route, and it just blew my mind. Mainly because Sekka was a character I honestly had no real expectation of at all. She just looked like a normal, cute and shy character who had nothing else to her. But once her route started, I couldn't stop reading. Each ghost has a reason for... well, being dead. Something ended up killing them at some point in their life, though what this is varies. (duh.) In Sekka's case, whatever it was caused her to become extremely shy around other people, and she is so insecure she can barely even speak to others. She spends most of her time on the roof of the school, staring into the sky. Shuuya is the only person in the school who actually ended up approaching her despite of her insecurity. He kept talking to her, which made Sekka open up a lot more, but at the same time, this created more insecurity. It's hard for Sekka to understand normal, human relationships, and she doesn't really get what friendship means in general. On top of that, a ghost's mental condition is directly linked to how well they can control their powers, which means Sekka is already in a bit of a shaky spot as it is. This route's entire structure was very unique and interesting. Sekka's route is probably one of the most dramatic, and in my opinion it's one of the best, though it is a bit on the shorter side, sadly. Reading both her endings in succession is strongly recommended, and starting with the bad ending is the most ideal for sure. The reason for this is that the structure of her route is a bit different from what you tend to see in most games, with the order of how things happen turned a little on its head. In addition, Sekka's bad ending is longer than her true ending, and it also contains important information that will make the true ending even more impactful. The difference between the human and the ghost heroines in the game might look slightly strange to some people. Why use both? Why not just one? On one side, you have nakige elements and drama, and on the other side you have standard charage material? Why? Well, this game does a very good job of keeping the two connected. It's not two completely alien entities that exist totally independent of one another. For exmaple, An's route is the cutest and most slice of life driven route in the game, but even this route deals heavily with Shuuya's powers and his attendance at the school, as well as his past and the origin of his powers. ... ... But really though, most people should just want to play An's route because of how freaking adorable she is. I mean... come on. Anyways, moving on. The other two human heroines, Kana and Hinagiku have more dramatic routes compared to An, but they are still quite different from the ghost routes. I found Hinagiku's route the most entertaining of the three, mainly because of her character. (Like, because she was a very interesting heroine, not just because she is so pretty! Well, she is incredibly pretty though. I mean... look.) (The art really is nice in this game.) I could rant on for hours and hours about the game, but I think I got the most important stuff out of the way. This is a very solid VN, with great characters, an interesting plot and some seriously tear-jerking moments. If you like nakige, you'll like this one. For the people who can't read Japanese, you should definitely keep your eye on the TL project. (But hey, even if it did, it's my blog so who cares )

  15. From my brief search on the net there seems to be no one translating this vn. The chances of this title being translated in the future is pretty slim considering no other titles of Ensemble have been translated offically or unoffically.

  17. It's a trend followed primarily by one company: Sekai Project. MangaGamer has dabbled a little in it as well, but generally is taking a slow and tempered approach, most of their works are of other genres. Denpasoft so far is pretty close to 100% yuri, however. It's honestly getting really, really tiring.

  19. ayo it´s not like i´m against yuri by default, as there have been works i´ve enjoyed, but them all artificially hyping up the genre, making it seem like each and every work is a masterpiece thats stand way above others, is what sullies my mood. feels like somehow getting re-educated/brainwashed by the industry itself into non liking different types of stuff anymore. edit. granted, those are still semi-paranoidal future shenanigans, but i cant help but being reminded at the time when moe first started emerging the oceans of evilness.

  22. Finished ef. It was pretty great, but had major pacing issues. The first tale was nothing more than "alright", but the latter tale was absolutely fantastic; all of the plotlines were much better imo. The art was absolutely ridiculous (more CG than sprite on background, or at least it felt like it), and the ending cut scene was especially gorgeous. The VN got to be very emotional towards the end, and one could easily start crying while reading it. In a lot of its aspects, I felt that it was comparable to Clannad, but was much more mature as a whole; The plot twists towards the end could be a bit hard to buy at times, but the foreshadowing was good and nothing really took me out of it too much. Some of the characters in the first tale were subpar (and there's a special place in hell for love triangle plotlines), but the latter tale made up for it by a long shot.

Akatsuki Works and Applique, two subsidiaries of Akabeisoft2 (of Sharin no Kuni and G-Senjou no Maou fame) have each released a mini-VN for free on their websites (which are a pain to access from outside of Japan, but anyone used to bypassing DMM's controls on their MMO releases should be able to manage it). Akatsuki Works released Hi no Nai Tokoro ni Kemuri wa Tatanai ( https://vndb.org/v19369 ), which seems to be a chuunige-type by Hino Wataru, as is typical of the Akatsuki Works brand. Applique released Tsukikage no Simulacre ( https://vndb.org/v19964 ), which seems to be an occult story based in a mansion with a living doll. Both VNs are kinetic novels with no h-content (one of the comments I saw on the Akatsuki Works company blog mentioned that they wanted h-content next time, laughingly). For reference, Akatsuki Works releases chuunige and games with a heavy emphasis on narration over dialogue (story-focused VNS). Applique tends to prefer fantasy and sci-fi transhumanistic stories, nakige, and hard sci-fi. Both are excellent companies that have produced multiple kamige in the past, lol. PS: This is Entry 300 in my blog... surprise surprise. Edit: Oh, IOS and Android versions are being released as well, for those interested.

  26. Yes. Hi no Tori, Budda, Black Jack, Ayako, Metropolis among other things (I'm just listing things off the top of my head here) are pretty much timeless classics now. I have no idea what you like and what you have already read so I can't tell you that you're gonna like them but they're not cornerstones of the history of manga for no reason.

  27. My Confessions: - I'm a lolicon and I'm proud of it ^^ (many friends even know about that) - I'm 20 year old male, that never kissed a girl before. Even though I had, and still have, good relations with girls, never really was in a real relationship and, I don't even know completly why, I'm not that interested in it. I think sometimes, when I see a couple, that I would like to have a girlfriend, but then I have such thoughts like: Why? I don't need it really. Would it not be just a waste of time? I like to read good romance VNs and mangas, I even try to write something myself (I'm kind of trying to become a fantasy book writer - that would be my actual dream job). Still don't really care about a real life relationship. Maybe I'm really just into 2d and fantasy romance stories XD - I had a talk with the boyfriend of a friend, cuz he had thoughts, that I would try to steal her away from him. I have assured him that we are just friends - which, truth be told, have many things in common, hobbies, many similar childhood experiences, even our birthdays: my is 12, her 13 of the same month. We met on the university a year ago, studying the same thing, and, well, we are something like soulmates. I would lie, if I said I don't like her, but we are more like siblings (even called ourselves, Onii-chan and Onee-san for fun - yup, she's an anime fan too ^^) [And yes, I like imoutos, but that's another matter]. But, as I said above, not interested in relationships irl, and I would never hit on a girl, that is already in a happy relationship. Well, I think he believed me, he's a rather nice guy from what I can tell. Still, I don't know why, I would like to explain further to him, that I like her, but she is not really my type (he even couldn't sleep, from what he explained to me, cuz he had thoughts about her and me - so I felt a bit sorry for him at that point), but I think, that that in some way would hurt my friends feelings (And I don't think, that she would still like me, after I said to her, that I'm more interested in fictional stories, lolis, younger girls and imoutos - she's a bit older then I'm and said to me one time, that she does not understand how people can like lolis). Well, just wanted to share those. Maybe I will do more (probably). Have a nice day

  29. Alright, I have some excellent news this week. Our long lost TLC from over half a month back, Fukukaze, has finally returned back to us. This is great news, and he will be TLC’ing the new, secret project. As for the progress, I’m just going to quote my editor on this: So, there’s not that much progress like normal, but still progress nontheless. Anyways, about the secret project, 10 more days until the reveal. Time sure does fly. The team’s pretty much picked, so there’s no need for a recruitement phase this time around. I’ll leave you with this picture. I’ll applaud you if you guess it right.

    I started reading Tsukihime and it's interesting so far (currently at 8 - Death). Really like how the characters are drawn, they look alive and confident. They are missing fins and gills.

  31. Oh, certainly. If you restrict yourself to looking at popular VNs, or VNs from companies with a proven track record, you'll find that most of them tend to be fairly good quality. And I'll even grant that if you look at the best of both markets, Japanese games currently are way out in front of OELVNs. But that's not what "most VNs have crap stories" means (which was the original quote). Most of them ... have got crappy stories. Because "Japanese VN" includes everything. Including all the super low-budget stuff, like Appetite and Softhouse Seal and Hentai Industries. And let's not forget all the doujin stuff you can find on DLSite. If you take all the pizza delivery simulation nukige, and all the highly derivative stuff that comes out, and all the low-budget bargain labels, and throw them into the mix along with your Liarsoft and Innocent Grey titles, you will find that ... most Japanese VNs have a crappy story.     You sure you are using "Most" ? How many untranslated games have you read? Actually, Haruki is right. Most Japanese VNs are doujin, aka amateur, works. These are the equivalent of most OELVNs - people that want to make a VN and (usually) use a free engine to do it. Individuals or small teams, little to no budget, small release or limited to digital only, and so on. And there a relots of them. To give you an idea, there are 56 'major' releases this month (9/1-9/30) according to Getchu. It's hard to tell how many doujin games are published, but Getchu, DLSite, and dmm show somewhere between 5 and 10 releases every single day during September, with 20+ on the last few days - a total of 200-250. You're looking at something like 1/5 or less being 'professional' titles. The vast majority of those doujin games are crap. Cheap knock-offs, barely re-labeled fanfics, 2nd grade art projects, etc. In fact, most 'professional' titles aren't very good. Sure, there are gems in there: Tsukihime, or the ChuSinGura 46+1 original release. But very few, out of thousands released in a given year. This shouldn't be surprising, very few non-professionals produce high quality works. The OELVN market is the same way - most works are amateur, and most of those are crap. But they're crap because they're low-quality amateur works, not because they're English.

I don't have the skills or knowledge to implement the translations into the video game, and I'm not exactly fluent in Japanese, but what I can do is present the visual novel in a light novel format.
