That's kind of a bad way to think about it though. You're basically saying companies fucking up doesn't matter since the community will just patch it up either way. Why not demand, as a consumer, that the company delivers you a good product to begin with? We're very fortunate rusanon decided to make a team to patch up Konosora, but we can't simply assume that will happen every time, especially since translating a vn is an immense amount of work and most people aren't up for it. I'd much rather try to get the company to fix their shit, although in Moenovel's case it might be a lost cause. Regardless , I really don't agree with this "compaies fucking up is okay because the fans will fix it" mindset and I hope it doesn't become the status quo anytime soon.6 points

This is exactly the wrong attitude to take. We have exactly one way to convince MoeNovel to do things properly: Not buying their bowdlerized games, and demanding they fix their broken shit. Giving them money for doing a shitty job, because someone will fix it for them for free, only tells them to keep doing what they're doing. If you care about good translations, and if ridiculous censorship bothers you, then don't buy their products. You're of course free to do whatever you want, but if you buy their products then the message you send is that this is acceptable to you, and you want them to do it more.2 points -

This is a company that should make most people worry about censorship, since they actually intentionally mistranslate the text to make it more kid friendly. It goes well beyond just removing sex scenes, it's a complete rewrite of the story, which is not okay by any professional translation standard. At most you can call it an adaptation, not a translation, but even that would be too kind given the awful English. Imagine the Harry Potter books but the word wand was replaced by water gun. Yeah, not very fun. (well now that i think about it it does sound a bit fun)2 points

I guess hit the book and great OST part (I agree that the OST was quite good ie great) make it quite obvious imo. Let me answer some riddle below. @WinterfuryZX A poor man is sucked into a conspiracy and found himself deadly cursed by an evil monk, on top of that, a self proclaimed samurai and his gang of 46 sucidal blockheads are planning to brutally slaughter him (Very easy with 46 as the hint). @Limerence_ Guy develops feelings (kinda) for machine. Helps machine fix other machines. Gets amazed by the machines (Quite short by the way). PS - Just click...... you knew what I want to say here.2 points -

Why Is Danganronpa Considered "Good"?
Tenkuru reacted to solidbatman for a topic
Okay, so I try to find this out on twitter and all I get are people saying because characters are gay, or its super edgy, or nonsense. I've played half of the first game, and I think its a god awful game with very few redeeming qualities. The characters are one dimensional and predictable, the investigations are bland and dry, the trials are an absolute mess with 30 different types of gameplay mashed together to create some ungodly mess of a classroom trial. The trials are just utter chaos. Poorly done music beat game, shooting random words down, shit all over the screen, its damn near impossible to play and know what the hell was going on. I found myself just mashing buttons until things worked half the time. The fact that so many people like it shows that, clearly, I am the one in the wrong for thinking this is a terrible game/series, so I ask those who like it, sell me on this game. What exactly am I missing? I'm not looking for a response telling me that, "the game just isn't for you." I want to know why people who like it, like it. I've yet to actually see people explain why they like it, aside from the, "OMG THESE TWO ARE SO SHIPPABLE!" type stuff. Posted in this board because I expect this thread to get as messy as the game is.1 point -

Thank you Tay, Nayleen, Nosebleed, Solidbatman, Decay, Rooke, KosakiFag, Madvanced, Ken-kun, Flutflut, Tiag, and everyone else on Fuwanovel for giving me a place to go and talk about the things I enjoy. I've recently moved into a new house and with it I want to do things differently. It's my senior year of High School, I've lost 70 pounds over the last year, I've gotten more friends, and I just want to do things differently, simple as that. I'll still be on Discord, Skype, and Steam for anyone wanting to talk. Again, thank you One last Inori (a re-post but it's my favorite). I really loved this site <31 point

Long time Lurker here
Fred the Barber reacted to CorgiKing for a topic
Hi! I've been lurking this board for quite some time now and I guess it was finally time for me to make a profile account and start introducing myself. I'm a 30 year old (Happily Married) gamer who fell hard for visual novels and dating sims hard during his teen years and that love still burns quite strong to this day (something I'm trying to share with my wife, although she hates the emotional Nakige ones). I remember my first encounter with them was with True love and Season of the Sakura (Dem anime clones!) and I just sort of enjoyed the concept of a game where the object was to be loved and to find love when it was a time when games were reaching new peaks in how violent and edgy they could get. I remember wanting to play the new hotness of Japan which at the time was Sentimental Graffiti and To Heart...two games to this day I still haven't played despite my many years of taking Japanese during my college days. Anyway. My hobbies are all over the place but I'm first and foremost a video gamer. Always have, always will. I am blessed with my job being able to reflect that love and passion, I work at a market and research firm strictly for the video game industry, something which I hope to be able to take advantage on as I always try to be vocal about my support on visual novels of all kinds. When I'm not talking about games or my jobs or visual novels I enjoy movies, going to the beaches of sunny San Diego California, and generally enjoying life with my wife and my adopted son(dog), Zorro. I'm hoping to meet friends here real soon. P.S. I love Majikoi. Momoyo and Benkei are best waifus.1 point -

For those hearing about MoeNovel for the first time and interested in some background reading, I wrote an article discussing MoeNovel's censorship of If my Heart had Wings back when it was first released in 2013. Also happens to be one of the top hits on Google on the subject (which must be embarrassing for MoeNovel). Why I didn't buy If My Heart Had Wings1 point -
If so, Quartett! for the music, Katahane for art/aristocracy (alternatively, grab Rondo Leaflet if you're proficient enough in japanese) and any of the WAB games (aka, "What a Beautiful..." series from Hikaru Sakurai) for a mixture of fantasy, dystopia and specific atmosphere/color patterns. If you haven't yet, you really should read Planetarian, too. From late things I have read, I'd recommend Kitten Philia just for the artsy stuff, but it's propably way too much for you to swallow.1 point

And what is this magical "steam crowd" we're talking about? If it's not us after all, then I don't even know anymore. We're a part of it, like everyone else. It's huge, that's true. The only decent way to spread the word is to educate people about those issues. Unfortunately, people will most likely end up buying their new release. Our modern standards in regards to product quality have detoriated enough to the point, where majority doesn't really care as long as they get what they want and it better be damn cheap.1 point -

I do agree, it fits with the story overall. And just because it's the best part, which I agree it is, doesn't mean that it'll give you good feelings. It was mostly a case of my morals screaming in the back of my head that this wasn't the right thing to do. You know it's (usually) a good story when that happens. I would've been happy if she wouldn't have jumped, but I'm not angry at the course the story took either. But back to the topic!1 point -

How old is old?
Infernoplex reacted to juss100 for a topic
One thing that interests me is that you have this medium that was used primarily for pumping out pornography and somehow some enterprising people have turned that around and made it about storytelling. The naysayers point to how much cheaply written, shitty hentai there is, but I'm impressed because a lot of it isn't, but due to the need to make money the long, complex novels had to include pornographic sex scenes anyway and it seems that VNs generally still do almost as a nod to the past. I'm in no doubt that a large amount of VNs are complete rubbish but that's true of books and movies too, we just have a lot more people out there doing their best to filter out the good stuff for us (and imposing their own tastes upon us in the process.) I don't agree entirely about the translation thing - I've read a lot of great fiction in translation and whilst a lot of nuances are always lost, and you never quite get to appreciate the finest qualities of the language, if a translation is good you'll still get good literature, just not something that is 100% the original author's vision . That sounds really interesting -I think one of the best games I ever played was Planescape Torment, which is another "does it work better as a game or just a story" one. The other Infinity engine games play better as games, for sure - and also have great stories - but maybe Planescape was a better game for having such brilliant writing?? Which game developer is this? Ahhhh I wanna play The Tales and Legend of the heroes games. If only I had stupid amounts of free time I guess I'll stick to FF XV when it comes out, and I only got about 20% through witcher 3 *sigh* I was actually thinking of taking another look at these. I got angry with Telltale after they dropped trad point and click because I really enjoyed their Monkey Island revival. But now I'm playing the new King's Quest game and, actually, I'm feeling that reviving old classics like this is a bit redundant anyway. I guess the question should be whether Telltale tell good stories? Hard to be interested in Minecraft though!!! And I'm a bit indifferent to the way they are mopping up popular franchises, but I played the first Borderlands episode and thought it very well told. I feel your pain. I'm torn between whether it's ingenious or just tedious to play, in a way. It's all certainly very innovative. I decided not to bother to play it though and am just watching youtube videos of it. It's depressing seeing how very LONG they all are, but I'm finding it quite gripping and love the way these games subtly screw over your expectations towards them at every possible turn The jury is out ... When the text is really bad in a hentai game I find it a bit of a turn off and often the images match in trying too hard to be explicit. But sometimes it works! I'm actually finding Yu No to be pretty sexy, it's biggest crime is trying to find too many opportunities to show off cleavage/panties.1 point -

Nandemonai reacted to Decay for a topic
That may be how people do things, but not corporations. A company that makes a pile of money doesn't say "Welp, guess we can do nothing for a while!" unless they're extremely bad at what they do. Money earned is immediately used for new investments so they can earn even more on top of that. The real answer to this issue is gleaned when you look at where the IMHHW money has been going to. If it's not back into Moenovel, then it's probably going into the budget for Pulltop's Japanese releases, with them deeming that money invested there will earn back more than putting that money back into game localization. It's the only explanation that comes to mind.1 point -

VNs are by and large highly compatible with Windows 10. Modern VNs should basically have full compatibility, so you can assume that anything recent works and anything new will always work. Older VNs might have odd issues but you can typically work around those and instances of VNs not working outright are extremely rare. Here's a compatibility list organized by @sanahtlig https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1itCvY8aWGjjhAA1fS8tYCGwcpq4b7tI574NsNb0d_eI/edit#gid=0 It's not fully comprehensive but generally people tend not to report fully functional games but will report anything that isn't functional.1 point

Sora no Tsukurikata Final: Final Arc, Haru route
gustave154 reacted to Clephas for a blog entry
Surprisingly enough, Sora no Tsukurikata has managed to avoid driving me insane with rage. *pauses for the gasps of shock and the screeches of terror from the audience* In the end, this VN managed to mostly avoid the violence you would see in most VNs with mafia members as main characters, and it did so without going down the 'total moe-moe' route that most VN writers would have chosen in the same case. Haru is the main heroine of the game, but her route doesn't relegate the other heroines to inferiority like many other ladder-type main heroines do. Thankfully, it feels almost identical to the other routes, save in that her route not only uses the events in her arc but also the other arcs to make it over into a complete story. That was a nice choice on the part of the author, in that it made the other heroine routes 'real' without taking away the fact that Haru was the main heroine. Haru is... a bit weird. She's an up and coming mage with a penchant for sticking her nose in other people's business and a cheerful optimism+childish idealism that would be annoying if it weren't also leavened with a surprisingly high capacity for reason and an impressive ability to concentrate on solving a problem. She is, in the end, a normal kind-hearted girl, but this is one of those rare cases where that didn't turn out to be a bad thing. Perhaps the biggest difference between Haru's path and the others is that the protagonist's personal issues are revealed and resolved in full, though perhaps not in a way that I would consider satisfying. In fact, I thought the events leading up the end of the fourth arc and the beginning of Haru's story were way too rushed. It seemed as if they deliberately truncated the protagonist's personal suffering in order to focus on Haru... and while that is typical for the average charage, it surprised me in a VN that has been so very atypical otherwise. One thing I liked about the endings in the VN is that they all extend several years past the climax of the story... and into the period of time where the characters have chosen their paths in life, rather than merely going with the flow. Now, for my verdict on what I enjoyed most about this VN... it was the comedy, of course. The character dynamic in this VN clicks in that ideal way that you see in the best VNs (though the antagonist is weak and/or a non-entity for most of the game), and that leads to some amusing running jokes. Overall, this VN was a fun ride. It isn't an especially violent one (well, outside of Rizal cursing anyone who uses a gun to die repeatedly and be resurrected until they go insane), despite the mafia element. This surprised me, considering the way the VN began, but it wasn't as much of a disappointment to me as it might have been. This is no kamige, but it is definitely VN of the Month material.1 point -
How old is old?
Suzu Fanatic reacted to ittaku for a topic
Welcome! I'm probably one of, if not the, oldest active member of the forum. I'm 46 and have been reading VNs for about 20 years and watched anime for about 15 years. The passion has waxed and waned over that period but never died out completely. Additionally I've become a translator for the fun of it and as a way of keeping my Japanese skills up. I guess the only thing is my career and family life was well established before any of these pastimes became a big part of my life, having a full time unrelated career, wife and two kids. That's probably a better order to do things in since a hedonistic lifestyle of just doing the things you enjoy is better earned than a way of life to begin with - it's hard to turn things around later on. On the other hand there's nothing stopping you turning something you're really passionate about into a career. No matter how bad you are at something, if you're passionate you end up becoming good at it, though there's always the danger that turning a hobby into a career is a good way to lose interest in it. As you might be able to tell from what I'm saying there's really no right or wrong way to approach or do anything in particular, so long as it works for you in some fashion.1 point -

I don't care about writing
sherlock1524 reacted to starlessn1ght for a blog entry
Dude, I will say I disagree with you, but Im very very glad to find someone like you. In my opinion, all elements of a work of fiction must be treated equally. Writing can be just as powerful as art or cause the same amount of damage, if bad, imo. I also watched that video but what opened my mind about the subject was this post. Before reading that, I also thought that story and characters> everything else. But then, I started searching and studying more and I finally realize art, soundtrack, animation, voice acting, etc. can all bring emotions and be intelectually stimulating just like story and characters. It makes me sick seeing people saying stuff like: "I dont care about art" because that is not an opinion, that is a lie. People 'think' they dont care about art because they never studied how it is used and thus do not realize its impact. Those people tend to think good art is just being pretty and therefore it is easier to make than a good story. Now even if I disagree that writing is inferior to art or soundtrack, it makes me really glad to see people like you, at least to balance the amount of overrate writing gets from the community.1 point
