This right here so much. It can not be overstated how this is the result of two sides not listening to each other. Hillary didn't get overwhelming support for a reason, and you can't simply brush it off as "oh it was all those racist and sexist white americans. Fuck them". It wasn't. It was so much more than just that. It was an entire group of people who are tired of the establishment and threw a brick at it. Trump is literally a rock that was thrown at every single mainstream entity who kept pushing the "the other side is evil" narrative. That is what he represents for a ton of people. And unless you address both sides seriously, without preemptively assuming they are Satan incarnate, situations like this will keep happening. And it is my firm believe that no matter who had won, this election had already done the most damage to the American population of any other recent election. And things go much deeper than the two major political parties. I'd like to share this one post I read on reddit from a trump supporter, which resonated with a lot of people, including non Trump supporters as well, and which I believe really showcases how many of his supporters felt. Whether you agree with it or not isn't what I ask of you, but what I do hope is that you read it and just consider it for a moment. Maybe the other side is worth listening to and taken seriously into account. Maybe they have real worries which the other side isn't addressing. Maybe their goal isn't to plunder America back into the dark ages. Maybe they are humans too. Only when you do that can you unite your people. And this goes for both sides. (I apologize for the formatting but I'm on mobile right now so i can't fix it (or maybe i can but that'd be a load of work!) )5 points

You know I made the big mistake of looking at some of the comments in the news articles about fears of minorities and the LGBT communities about a Trump presidency, and I see several comments with an insane amount of up-votes stating, essentially, that these people are idiots if they believe that a Trump presidency will have any negative effect on their lives. Funnily enough it is always very white people too. I just, what fucking election have they been watching for the past few months?2 points -
For racial minorities, things are a little ambiguous. Trump isn't exactly going to reinstate segregation, but it's very possible that a government led by him will be more willing to overlook many of the issues these groups experience. When the KKK and neo-nazi groups are celebrating a president whom they resonate with for the first time in many decades, you know things can't possibly be good for non-whites in this country, even if new policy isn't enacted against them. Trump's anti-mexican, anti-muslim rhetoric will create a dangerous environment for many people. For LGBTQ, things are a lot more clear-cut, they are not going to have a good time. Trump's campaign promises included repealing various protections obama enacted, and perhaps more importantly, he promised to sign an extremely dangerous bill that would allow anyone to discriminate against non-straights in any capacity, as long as they cite religious reasons. Because according to Mike Pence, Donald Trump, and several other republicans, "freedom of religion" means "freedom to openly act on your religion's bigotry." He also said that he will heavily weigh the issue of gay marriage when selecting supreme court justices, picking ones that support repealing nationwide gay marriage. http://www.pinknews.co.uk/2016/09/23/donald-trump-pledges-to-sign-anti-lgbt-law-to-permit-religious-discrimination/ Consider that a United States president is as much of a political idol as they are a policy-maker. As long as they have public approval, they shape the politics of our country in ways that go far beyond simple policy. Already many Republicans are scrambling to reshape their own platforms to be more in line with Trump. Even one of his most ardent opponents in the Republican Party, Paul Ryan, had little more than carefully considered words of appeasement. Trump's populist movement is very real, and far more popular than anyone but him realized. For as long as this holds true, Republicans are going to shift their positions in order to tap into this movement. If Trump lost, that movement would have been dealt a serious blow. The GOP would have been in shambles but they likely wouldn't have reformed along populist and nationalist lines. Now that Trump won, that's exactly what's happening. But it's not just the existing politicians we need to worry about, it's the new ones whom Trump's rise to power enable. http://www.wsj.com/articles/donald-trumps-win-starts-a-new-era-for-republicans-1478738769 Richard Spencer is an outright white supremacist. He wishes for a "peaceful ethnic cleansing" of America, and seeks to turn us into a "white ethnostate." Sounds like a crazy fringe belief, right? Yet here he is, potentially being granted far more political power than he ever otherwise would have, thanks to Trump winning. Trump will not and doesn't have to pass discriminatory bills, the damage in this area he will cause has nothing to do with our system of checks and balances. The legislative and judicial branches can do little to stop our many dangerous fringe movements from becoming not-so-fringe. They may not suddenly all become major institutions capable of influencing policy, but our decades-long intolerance for such views are rapidly eroding, Our population is becoming radicalized, and with Trump's arrival, Washington will feel like a cozy home to all of our worst racists, nazis, homophobes, and more.2 points

Dreams and goals you once persued.
Radi reacted to EastCoastDrifter for a topic
Have you ever had any dreams or goals in the past that you wanted to follow and achieve? And if so, are you still pursuing those dreams or have you long since abandoned them for practical reasons? For me, I once had a dream of becoming the first foreigner to write a light novel in Japan because at the time, I was at my prime as an anime fan and I'd just discovered light novels long before they started to be released globally. This was because I'm a talented writer and I wanted to see my work get adapted into an anime, and because I'm Canadian, I was hoping to set an example to the anime industry as a whole (though technically, Monty Oum already beat me to the punch with that). I had held on to this dream until very recently because of so many real life circumstances, at which point, I just abandoned it altogether. One is because of financial problems and getting into Japan is really expensive. Secondly, I have to focus on completing college and finding a job to sustain myself. And finally, I'm not Japanese, so getting into their light novel business is going to be EXTREMELY difficult. I don't know if they don't accept foreigners at all because there are no records of foreigners ever attempting this, but my gut feeling has been telling me for years that they don't. I've been also told by my friends that attempting to go to Japan just to write a book is impractical, which I tried coming up with valid counter-arguments to explain to them why I was doing this, but in the end, they were right. If I wanted to write a book, I can just do so in my home country. Now, my dream has changed. All I want to do now is just write a story that's light novel and anime-inspired, and publish it as a web novel online. Who knows, I may even turn it into a visual novel if the Visual Novel Maker program comes out.1 point -

Uchikoshi Kotaro's writing style analysis
Tyr reacted to bilguun alix for a topic
I’ve realized that I actually experienced a lot of stories written by Uchikoshi. So I thought that I should share my thoughts on his works and analyze his abilities as a writer. I have played Never7( 40%), Ever 17 (20 % probably), ZE franchise (100%) and watched Punchline(100%). Pros Good characterization One of the reasons I think ZE franchise is better than danganronpa is because the characters feel a lot realistic and their personalities are rich. You can never explain the character’s personality with few simple words because they act differently in different situations. Now of course there are some exceptions to this. But you get the general feeling that most of the characters are human. Well informed and knowledgeable about scientific theories and facts Probably one of the biggest reasons why 999 and VLR surprised me immensely when I first played it. Uchikoshi was backing up the supernatural elements with many interesting scientific phenomenon and it was amazing. I have never witnessed these kinds of stories at the time. ZTD and Punchline doesn’t have them but hey you can’t spam everything you know about science into everything you create. Knows about human behavior action/reaction. Especially in 999 and VLR you could notice that the character’s behaviors fit well with their personality and during a murder investigation and solving puzzles they had the least amount of out of character moments. The reason I didn’t say he knew very well is because of ZTD’s Yandere Akane. Why oh god why would you do that? Good at handling mood shifts Stuffing tons of jokes in a horrible death game that toys with human life without breaking the immersion and destroying the atmosphere does take skill. In ZTD you could see that the jokes and funny character interaction happening at the start of the game. However when the game gets series those moments are completely cut down. The same with the other games. Amazingly good at foreshadowing and misguiding. His second strongest asset of writing. Things such as 9th man yelling “he killed me” or Phi shouting “Grandpa” truly did surprised me when I replayed the games. Even in Punchline you could see in the first episode that there was tons of foreshadowing But sadly the good parts end here. Now onto the bad parts. Cons Fan service and fetishes Dancer fetish in 999, Egyption fetish in VLR, Hooker fetish in ZTD and VLR(Clover). Pucnhline is a disgusting ecchi bullshit. Never 7 and Ever 17 are date simulators. Being a man means being horny but at least respect the players and the characters will ya. And this problem gets bigger when you notice that the fan service characters end up being the least developed. Little attention to world building and society As you all know most of zero escape’s plot revolves around death games. But we need to see what is happening outside of the death games. How did the world react to the kidnapping and death of the Cradle P’s leaders? What kind of technology they use in 2027? How did the radical 6 tragedy play out? So on and so on. These are important stuff. Poor attention to character backstory Uchikoshi has this weird belief that he has to show the players only what happens in the present. Never show what happened in the past. Only talk what happened in the past. From what I know the three characters that suffered from this the most are Akane, Sigma and Junpei in ZTD. Junpei got a character development off screen! You could even make a series about Junpei and his thug life. Sigma spent 45 years preparing for ZTD yet he feels so naïve and uninformed. What kind of training was he been through? What type of mindset he had when he created the events of VLR. Akane is probably the most vaguely written character in the entire series. If Akane is your favorite character then why won’t you show how she became so rich and powerful. Show us what she has been through and what was in her mind during 999. Instead we got ZTD Akane which is June disguised as Akane. BULLSHIT. Punchline is even worse. A villain’s backstory is glossed over. Why do you have to do this? Shock effect and plot twists over consistency Uchikoshi is a dreamer. He dreams of making the impossible possible and his stories suffer a lot because of it. You can’t excuse a person not being able to notice that he is an old man. Nor you can excuse a person being out of screen the whole time. Because that’s impossible to excuse and will only contradict what you have built so far. Plot twists in ZE serve as cheap shock effect. And the shock effect comes with a price of tons of contradictions. Addiction to time travel By far the greatest problem I have with Uchikoshi’s story. All of his works I MEAN all of them are related to time travel. Why oh why would you keep doing this? I know he is a hardcore science fan boy but timetravel is the one thing that can fuck up any story with ease. And all of ZE’s masterminds have motivations that has to do with time travel. I posted a while ago about the biggest plot hole in all 3 zero escape games and this was it. And come on, If you had free will to travel through time you could accomplish anything. It literally ruins the conflict. Besides it’s useless to try changing anything when there are infinite timelines. On top of all that time travel promotes ESCAPISM. Yeah man just escape to a different reality leaving your loved ones behind and cheat in life by reseting your mistakes. Cancerous themes… speaking of themes Lack of theme exploration This is the reason why I never think Uchikoshi highly anymore. I love Hideaki Anno who created Neon genesis Evangelion and Yuasa Masaki who created Tatmi Galaxy( anime). The themes about, anti escapism, self worth, regret, human connection, and the meaning of life is amazing. Uchikoshi doesn’t do that. The concept of time travel, 4th dimension, morphogenetic connection are NOT themes. Those are just cool brainstorming ideas that has nothing to do with our life. Themes are like direct but immensely detailed advices. They change the way you percieve life. His stories on the other hand are like a puzzle game. Once you finish playing it it loses it’s value. It’s fun and exciting alright but it never changes your mentality. You feel like you changed but that’s because of the emotional roller coaster. Those are just after effect of the shock and will fade away. Verdict Overall Uchikoshi does have potential as a writer. But you see, he never takes his job seriously. This is why despite my fondness of his ideas and death games. Despite my love for his iconic scenes and characters I still don’t rate him highly. There is a reason why the world’s most highly claimed writers seldom use time travel and crazy twists in their story. They focus on character mentality, consistency, theme exploration more. And this is why Uchikoshi is inferior to them.1 point -

KonpekiUmi, about your dream: in Rome, do as Romans do, but... - Japanese are fiercely proud of themselves and their culture, they're also fiercely xenophobic (I don't think I'm exaggerating...). I mean, they love to visit other places, but are very reluctant to let other people become a part of the country (and with good reason, but maybe they're too cloistered). Taking scholarships as an example, they only let the most brilliant people in and ask a lot from them. If you manage to get a Japanese citizenship it's likely you get some form of discrimination. That means that a foreign light novel writer would be viewed with suspicion, you'd probably have to assume a pseudonym and the like. Look at how, in ef VN, the male lead writes shoujo manga and has to use a pseudonym for fear of being found out as a guy that makes that. It would look... unsightly. Probably so a foreign LN writer. - Can you beat the Romans at what the Romans do? I don't doubt you've consumed tons of anime and Japanese media, but that doesn't guarantee you success in the Japanese market. You have to take the different mindset into consideration. - Some dreams are achievable, easily or not, while some are pretty far away and we're better off using our energy in other endeavours. Your decision to get an education is right and you should pursue it. After you graduate and maybe earn some money you can actually consider moving to Japan (or someplace else) and living your life as you like. Maybe it's not really an impossible dream, only unlikely. I know a Spanish youtuber who's presently living in Japan, but I don't know if he'll make it his permanent residence or he's just passing by.1 point -

No, I meant that his attitude is dangerous. I don't care if he has a huge following or if many people willingly walk hand in hand to annihilation like lemmings, his ideas are wrong. With "annihilation" I don't mean to say that we're necessarily going to a global enveloping war that would destroy the world, but hey, the balance is really precarious in some places of the world. Trump is aggressive and aggressiveness is what leads to war. I understand that the downfall of the West and especifically Europe has been too much political correctness, naivety and weakness to act pragmatically. But Trump is not just this, he's aggressiveness taken to the extreme, he's a borderline hooligan. There's no changing him no matter how much you want to blanket your eyes and reason. Will it spell disaster? Probably no, but potentially yes. But this is no place to discuss Trump's leitmotivs and identity as a politician, since more or less everyone knows already.1 point -

If you're just looking for organized crime stuff there's a few mafia/gang-themed vns? Like Luckydog and Omerta (they're both BL though). Luckydog is also just a text translation and Omerta is a VNR community subtitle translation. But I also don't know anything that's heavily yakuza-specific and the VNDB tag isn't really helping here, cause people tag if the yakuza shows up at all/is a side character... I can, for example, say that No Thank You!! is definitely not what you're looking for. Nor is Dramatical Murder. If you hate BL all these suggestions are moot, which means I'm just saying the VNDB tags aren't necessarily helpful in this case...1 point

So CNN is a marketing organization now? (Alright, I see you in the cheap seats, yes, I know, they are, har har har.) More to the point, what about your editorial? Is that MoeNovel marketing material now? It is true that media coverage generates more attention for whatever's being covered. That does not mean that the media are marketing. Marketing is something that companies do to promote their own products. So yes, Fuwanovel exists for the purpose of promoting visual novels (insofar as it is run by fans for the purpose of disseminating information about them). That makes them a media outlet, not MangaGamer's or Sekai Project's marketing department. Marketing makes its decisions based around how the market for a product will be affected; journalism makes its decisions based around what its readership wants to hear about.1 point -

Anyone Really Religious here?
mitchhamilton reacted to Okarin for a topic
I'm agnostic since my adolescence, I believe God's existence can go either way (not that we'll possibly ascertain it anytime soon -- that's the trick, folks!!), and every religion under the Sun can be good or bad. I of course was raised as a good Catholic and I've fiddled with Buddhist views since, but hey, these are just theories. The prophets are from so long ago. Religions should be about doing good, and you don't need religion for that. Do good because that way you will benefit yourself and your peers, and everything will work out. Also the Buddhist concept on reincarnation and the Universe being a testing ground for souls is nice, but you can't bet all the money on that. For example, you could be tempted to neglect this life you have since you are being reborn anyway. That's no good. In a sense, thinking that this life is all we have and when it's over it's over, is a nice motivational concept, contrary to what it may seem. All in all, I'd like to go to a Heaven where I can meet people such as Bud Spencer and Gene Wilder, let alone my dead pets and loved ones. That'd be awesome.1 point
