How do visual novels handle multiple heroines in the common route?
Dreamysyu and one other reacted to Nandemonai for a topic
How to put this ... You are looking at visual novels the wrong way. It's like watching a single movie - say a James Bond movie - and trying to extrapolate to what movies as a whole are like. You can find VNs telling lots of different kinds of stories. Even just among romance VNs. There are all kinds of romance games. There are games that are little more than excuses to get into the girls' pants, in which the excuse plot is romance-related. There are games about doomed romance. There's even (if I'm informed correctly) a horror-romance VN called Gore Screaming Show that has quite a stellar reputation (though I haven't played it myself). To answer your specific question, it depends on the game. Sometimes, all the girls almost entirely disappear from the story once you land on a girl's route. Sometimes, all the girls are in love with you from day one. Sometimes, they all hate you, and the story is about slowly winning them over. Sometimes, just the girl whose route you're on falls for you. Sometimes, more than one falls for you and it's played for comedy; sometimes, for drama. I know of one game (OzMafia, an otome game) that actually takes it to the logical extreme: for some of the characters, when you enter character A's route, character B gets jealous, and you can actually switch from A to B. Note that you could also continue on A's route, or by playing differently, take B's normal route. And then there's the infamous School Days, which simply ... lets you choose. There are two main heroines, they both love you, you can stay faithful, or not; if you don't, very bad things happen when they find out, involving body counts! Now, translated, that's another matter. But there's still a lot of stuff available.2 points -

How to Run a Pulltop Game 101 Featuring: Hasugase Mina & Bell from Cocoro@Function! Also Featuring: Mephisto References http://i.imgur.com/zOMBtJy.jpg Well hello there Mina-san. I'm glad to see you've come to the experts to get some good advice when it comes to running a visual novel from Pulltop. Sadly, Mephisto is unable to join us this evening, but I'll definitely tell him you said hello! http://i.imgur.com/HjFOWJx.jpg Don't sweat it Mina! So how can I help you fine ladies this evening? I heard you need help running some of your company's games, is that true? http://i.imgur.com/XvCSs1G.jpg You'd be surprised how many people ask the same question Mina, so don't worry about it too much. You see, playing a moe porn game from Pulltop is a little unique. Not only do you need to change your unicode settings to Japanese, but you also need to change your format entirely! To give you an idea, here are some screenshots: Step 1: Step 2: Step 3: Step 4: Easy as pie! If you follow those steps and make sure your game is set to a Japanese format, your problems should cease to exist. http://i.imgur.com/9ndvCAm.jpg That's kind of gross guys! But anyways, I hope this helps, and see you in the next tutorial!1 point -

It's not that archetypes don't exist in western media, it's just that they tend to be done better. Repetition, archetypes, clichés, tropes and so forth are all fine as long as they are handled well.1 point

Walkure Romanze translation please?
Chronopolis reacted to Nandemonai for a topic
Yes, really. Yeah, yeah, I know, total necro (even though the thread itself was necroed by someone else I'm still replying to a 6 month old post), and I've posted things like this before. But it bears repeating. People need to understand the way the law works. Distribution means just that, distribution. Whether you charge for it, or distribute it for free, it's still distribution. You are (probably) correct in that you can pay people to translate a VN for you if you want to read it. (It's arguble, but probably okay. I'm not actually a lawyer so I don't want to get too far into the weeds.) But the instant you spread that patch around, even for free, you've broken the law. And the people you paid have also broken the law. The international treaties that define how copyright works specifically include translation rights. Mods are tolerated. You do not have the legal right to make a mod against the will of the makers/publishers of the original game. The games that have vibrant mod communities, have them either because the publisher has explicitly published some kind of "mod license" that gives modders permission to mod the game, or because they have chosen to voluntarily not enforce their rights, either because they think mods are cool, or because they think the mods help their bottom line. Just try releasing a mod for Skyrim where you have to (let's say) have sex with, then kill and eat, children in order to win the game, and see how long before Bethesda "asks" you to take it down. Similarly, basically all fan patches are illegal. There are a couple of reasons nobody actually gets in trouble. One, most Japanese companies don't even know about them. Two, some don't care, since most patches require owning a legit copy. Three, the ones that care will have a very hard time suing in a foreign country to enforce their copyrights. Four, to my knowledge, no group has ever ignored a C&D. Five, once you win, what are you going to collect? These groups have no money to pay any judgement. Sooner or later, some fan translation outfit will eventually get an official C&D, and they will say "damn the torpedoes, full speed ahead" and release the patch anyway. They will be asking to be sued. Whether they will actually get sued, who can say? But there is no doubt that it is against the law.1 point -
It's been a while since I cleared the air on this issue, but understand that my first love when it comes to heroines is always going to be based on 'difference'. Now, you ask, what does that mean? There are two aspects to this... the physical and the mental. In this thread, I seek to gather my fellow travelers who adore physical difference. Do you love mimikko? You belong here. You like androids and AIs? You belong here. Do you love a demonic heroine? You belong here. Do you love a monstrous heroine who only has a sort-of humanoid face? You belong here. To be blunt, being attracted to what is different is one aspect of human nature that is very common in otaku in general. Of course, there are exceptions (people who just like 'normal' moe girls with no fantastical or strange elements). However, the fact is that many of us are driven by this kind of attraction to some extent. So what's your favorite type of 'different' heroine? (mine is the kitsune heroine)1 point

Everlasting Cold [dark fantasy][psychological][patreon]
Zidan209 reacted to ShadowScaleFTL for a topic
A few words before this post. Its a cope from our patreon. So as for now as "Rebuild" version we don't have a demo but anyway you can support us and allow move forward more quick. https://www.patreon.com/EverlastingCold So for now it's a few words about out team, project, idea, destiny and futute. + Some current music and graphic for habituation. Lately im going translate more info about synopsis, about our heroes and ongoing news about project. Hi! I’m the head writer and author of the idea of Everlasting Cold. I'll tell you more about our project and explain some of details in this post. Also it should be noticed that English is not our team's native language, so this text right bellow can be a little rough. About our story. One of the main target for story – "globalising" from the start to the end. So it starts with simple idea – protagonist gets to a student base placed far away from civilisation. And this base is not from our world. It looks positive and kind, and it seems nothing bad will happen here. That's not the worst place to spend your last days of life… …Last days? Yes – this place is going to die. And all who lives here too. Can you change it? Can you stop it? Or you just want to take a rest before death? More strange things will happen then. More new characters will be involved to the story. It starts with just one hero but will grow and grow. It transforms into game about this world. Then – many worlds like this place but not only one parallel world system. Right now we have more then 10 characters in our story and 5 chapters that contains around 160 000 words. Story includes 3 big parts. First one is now complete. There is about 15 hours of gemeplay. Our objective time – ~60 hours. And if we will have enough support we can extend our universe for more chapters and side-chapters about LORE, characters or just interesting filler stories in it. Which genre is it? It is a complex story, so it consist of a lot of different things, Sometime it goes more psychologic thriller, sometime more like detective. also it contains a lot of philosophy about life in society, some magic, things bring us to fights, violence, sex, MORE MAGIC AND BATTLES and more philosophy. It's really hard to explain a genre of Everlasting Cold. It’s a complex composition of many things I want to see in one story. What is the main problem for us? Before I answer this question, I have to explain one important thing about this project. It’s a long story, but it will help you to understand our present situation. I started this novel at 27'th January of 2015. And started with simple idea whith a story about a man, who tired of world he lives in and can’t find place for himself. And those days I was alone without resources and experience in making novels. But the idea looked interesting. So I made one of the most decision – take some graphics from another project to design the novel. So as my goal was to create interesting story and show it to people. It doesn't looks bad. I never wanted to make it commercial or so, just tried to find more audience to read it. You can say it's bad idea or not, so it is a really long discussion, but that was the start. Soon after that some people read the story and enjoy it. Some was inspired of idea and joined to team that started to grow. Arts, music and technical parts came to the project after that. And it goes bigger. We tried to work enthusiastic. But it's not so efficient. So in fact it is some sort of modification (but almost nothing similar with novel I took resources from). At 11.17.2016 we finished 1st part of story. And for now it’s bigger and way more complex then novel I took resources from. And we come to the conclusion “we can't move forward as a mod. We must to transform it to a full and independent novel”. But major problem is just like at start – we don't have enough good artists who can draw a lot of backgrounds, arts, sprites to make it looks at almost professional level (I don’t think a good idea would be making average graphic content. Because it's a face of whole project, that's how it looks, how it feels. It's really important). So now we are looking for artist who can help us. And looking for support to hire good artist. But! Novels in our region are almost dead. #Minimal demand, poor audience, (that’s why it's almost impossible to make non-pop novels here. Forgot to say – we are from Russia). And the only way to continue working on this big project is to translate it into English. How it will looks as independent project? It will be not just simple change of some resources. For now I call it like “Rebuild” version. As I said – I start it with small idea and then team. In those days I didn’t know how big it will be. Opening chapters are not as good, as I want to. And it's not for wide audience – some things might take big attention to details. So we are working on complete rewriting of opening chapters. Add new characters in it, solve some misc LORE differences with later chapters, #improve some character's identity, totally build our own setting. That's a lot of work for now. Characters which was taken from that novel will be redesign completely and redrawn. As all backgrounds. So as “Rebuild” version it would looks a lot different as it looks now. What is our main goal for now? Finish 1st chapter and make it readable and playable again in Russian and English languages. We need to hire a high quality translator for this. Text have to look perfect (not like this post :D). So any support can help us to speed up this process. This is because I spend a lot of time trying to find somebody, who can help us and spend thousands of hours to discuss it and it's not really helps a lot. So if I can focus on scenario and we will not have problems with graphics, we can release it faster then current development speed. Just a quick answers at the end. Will it be free? Yes, it will be completly free all time. How it will releasing? We are going to expanding story chapter by chapter as soon as it possible. We had big plans for on going chapter, but was stoped becouse of this situation. So we go forward after rebuilding current material. Here is our current main menu [youtube]www.youtube.com/watch?v=s1RO24UdRVQ[/youtube] Some arts And some music you can listen on soundcloud page, which we create recently support us: https://www.patreon.com/EverlastingCold1 point -
How do visual novels handle multiple heroines in the common route?
Chronopolis reacted to ittaku for a topic
There are no rules and there are numerous ways to handle it. Some make the common route short and put you on a path with the heroine you fall for quickly and the other heroines go into the background to varying degrees. Others have a huge common route and short path with one heroine towards the end. Others will keep the other heroines in the foreground as part of the same story, or change the story completely and how they behave depending on which heroine you choose. Others will make the other heroines jealous and change their behaviour leading to conflict. Others will allow you to participate in an unhappy love triangle/polygon and end up with one/more/none of the heroines. The one I'm currently playing you spend time with each heroine, sorting out each girl's problems and even get to H them before you leave the common route after you choose one girl exclusively... or you can choose harem route and continue having all of them in various combinations... And so on and so forth...1 point -
How do visual novels handle multiple heroines in the common route?
Chronopolis reacted to mitchhamilton for a topic
it really depends. there are vns where it is head over heels love at first site and if its a harem vn, its common. hmm, sadly i cant think of any accessible romance vns other than if my heart had wings as an example. if my heart had wings does have a bunch of girls surrounding the protag but its not really written as harem or anything. there is a slight interest from the girls but thats probably just curiosity form their part since they dont interact with many boys. but none of them fall head over heels with him until he their route. so, it depends is what im saying. hmm, i would give some recs if thats your preferred delivery of romance but sadly i just cant think of any right now other than if my heart had wings. it is a pretty nice vn none the less. its my favorite vn of all time in fact.1 point -

Shakugan no shana is actually a solid anime series. Although the ending of the final season is something i disliked intensely, not because it is terrible per se but because it somehow managed to press all my wrong buttons. Lets just say i quite hated the show for a long time afterwards. When you finish it do let us know of your opinion. Personally i am currently watching el cazador de la bruja and madlax.1 point -
