People seem to have a tendency to try and associate their own life experiences to the visual novel they are reading, which I never fully understood. I have never encountered a route or heroine that I would associate with a real world counterpart. The appeal of visual novels to me is their unrealism, situations that could never happen in real life and characters that are often tailor made for the reader to like or at least sympathize with. Reality is often the opposite of fiction, boring and it is usually harder to sympathize with or even achieve basic understanding of other people.3 points -
Miniature Garden
alexfang452 and 2 others reacted to Fred the Barber for a topic
Miniature Garden http://store.steampowered.com/app/494170/ Summary In the woods not far from the city lies a school called the 'Miniature Garden.' In keeping with the school's name, an original 'Miniature Festival' is held there every three years. There’s a rumor that an unnatural death will befall someone on the night of the festival. This year, as the sun sets, Yasunari and four other students find themselves trapped alone in the school on the night of the festival. Is it just a mistake, or could the rumors be true? [Steam Summary] Ending Guideline / Suggested Route Order Miniature Garden has seven total endings, in keeping with its Seven Mysteries theme, and it's really not obvious why a specific collection of choices is going to lead you to any given different ending. That said, I don't recommend any particular order, and in fact I'd recommend you play without a guide at first. However, uncovering all the endings is an exercise in frustration and annoyance because of the lack of any obvious hints or obviously correct/incorrect combination of choices for many of them, so I basically recommend you to simply play around and see various endings until you start to feel annoyed by the repetition and/or by the frustration of looking, and at that point just use this guide to unlock the remaining endings (since they are generally worth seeing). Route Guideline Ending 1: An Old Memory Ending 2: Trigger Ending 3: With Memories Ending 4: Accomplices Ending 5: Allegory Ending 6: All Alone Ending 7: The Seven Mysteries Attribution Summary from Steam, and image linked from the game's VNDB page: https://vndb.org/v16658 Walkthrough created by @Fred the Barber3 points -

NEVER try to compare a media that caters to socially awkward shut-in otakus whoose only female contacts are their mothers with reality. That's like killing yourself because you think you will respawn as seen in MMORPGs1 point

Has this ever happened to you when playing a VN?
VaroOP reacted to littleshogun for a topic
Since you just ask the question here, I would just said not at all. The reason was a secret, but I would say that I agree with majority of the users here that VN was usually quite unrealistic in the first place. So of course there's bound to be some scenes that needed some suspension of disbelief. That's all that I could say.1 point -
I think that being shy (both sides) in a first date at 16 is pretty normal. Sex can happen on a first date, but at 16? Come on. Maybe in Brave New World. This is one of the famous instances of fan-pandering and fantasy-appealing commonly found in eroge. Take it or leave it.1 point

Has this ever happened to you when playing a VN?
mitchhamilton reacted to Guilty of Seeing Red for a topic
I'm not really the best authority on this topic as I'm still quite new to weebdom (and I didn't look at the spoiler tag) but just chiming in with with my opinions in regards to what others have been discussing: For me, realistic characters or situations have never been important in otaku media. Starting from their looks, with almost every girl drawn as asthetically pleasing as possible, a realistic approach isn't what most authors in this subculture seem to have in mind (with a few exceptions, such as Evangelion. Interestingly enough Shinji seems to be quite a controversial character precisely because of his realistic portrayal). From what I've heard, the speech patterns are also quite distinct from what you'd hear in RL Japanese and oh god, those voices and mannerisms would be absolutely obnoxious in real life. Like someone else above mentioned, I'm drawn to anime/manga/visual novels as a means of escapism, to be engrossed with quirky characters, teenagers saving the world, and life-defining highschool crushes. These are works made by otakus for otakus and influenced by other works of otakus rather than the real world. But I don't think that's necessarily a bad thing, it's just how these tropes are presented what matters. In fact I think one of the strengths of this medium is how they can present deeply engaing stories with characters and relationships I actually care about and can emphasize with despite their unrealistic nature. So if you come with the expectations of finding a realistic portralyal of interpersonal relationships, Japanese school life, or teenage drama, you will probably end up disappointed. But that's not how these media were intended to be enjoyed in my opinion, and if I wanted realism I'd just pick up a book.1 point -
So, I (finally) finished episode 1 of Himawari. And my reaction for it is... mixed. It's definitely too early to judge the whole VN, because basically, from what I understand, I've basically finished the common route, and I heard that it's worse in quality than the rest of the game. Still, there are some things that make me extremely cautious at this point. On the other had, there is more or less an equal number of things that make me intrigued, so I hope for the best. The protagonist is my least favorite part of the game so far. He is just a stupid sexually insecure coward, and I wouldn't really want to follow his perspective throughout the whole game, but we get what we get. Aries is another character I really don't like, but she got me intrigued at the end of the chapter, so, I don't know, I'm giving her a chance. Ginga is fine. Well, if we forget that he is ~16, looks like he is ~25, and acts like he's 10. In a more or less realistic scenario he would probably be considered mentally ill, but for a VN such character is nothing unusual, so I don't care. Asuka is ok. Aqua is the only character introduced thus far that I liked, though she also shows some signs of being not totally ok with her head. The sci-fi elements so far don't seem as good as I hoped before starting, but it's too early to judge that. On the other hand, it's take on the theme of space travel is quite interesting. From what I understand, this VN takes a more pessimistic approach to it, and it's a plus. Because, space travel today doesn't really seem like it's going to develop much further in the near future. <rant>I know that there are still some new project in development, like Falcon, but all of them are directed to the near surroundings of the Earth. On the other thing, people haven't been further in the space when they were in the 70's. Far space travel just doesn't have any applications as of yet, and even fully automatized stations like New Horizons require serious money investment. Manned flight to Mars would probably be too much. And nobody even knows what to do with the radiation in space, so it could also be physically impossible.</rant> Another thing, despite all the flaws I mentioned, the first chapter still works somehow. It's nothing amazing, but it was still kind of enjoyable to read, when I tried not to notice all those flaws. So, I don't know, I hope that the 2nd episode is better. 5-6/10 so far.1 point

Yeah, I had that on the beginning of my 'VN journey'. I was engrossed with romance and then BAM, sudden h scene destroyed everything. It's typical for shitty charage. It was jarring first few times, then I stopped reading those. But still - it's ridiculous, stupid, off putting, immersion breaking, cringe worthy and lazy writting. I could count good written romances with believable buildups for sex scenes in VNs that I read on my fingers. Of one hand. Visual Novels are really an awesome medium to tell stories and/or romances, but this medium is criminally underused. But well, who cares about believability and good writting, when you have moe/cute/tsundere/fap-fodder/great prose-no substance/unfunny comedies/pissing lolis/head pats/retarded and-or mentally deranged characters posing as cute and list of what people tend to like in VNs goes on and on. Sigh.1 point

Understand, it depends on the game... and I need to say this. 'Don't compare game romances to your romances.' For that matter, don't compare game dating, game sex-friends, or game anything to rl. Yes, I've been jarred out of an experience before... but never by romantic aspects. Sex and romance are so varied irl and in fiction that there is no meaning in comparing a real or imagined experience to your own in the first place. I've mostly been jarred by setting discrepancies too blatant to ignore, such as in Eustia.1 point

Koihime
VaroOP reacted to skrewball717 for a topic
Just want to reiterate what VaroOP said and that it was not a shot at your group by any means or your efforts, especially with everything that has happened to you guys to this point. The VN community appreciates all that you and every fan TL group does. I'd imagine editors are a bit easier to find that good TLers at least. I am a college graduate so I might be able to help some from an English proficiency standpoint, but I have never done so before so I doubt you would be interested in my services. Again thanks for everything you guys do. PS: Enjoy your backlog of VNs VeroOP =)1 point -

All of us appreciate the fact that you guys are translating this huge VN. At least there is hope that there will be a english translated version of Shin Koihime in the future! Also, I am sure that Skrewball didn't say that intending to criticize you. Every other person who wants to play Shin Koihime feels that way because it really is a shame that we can't play it yet. Well, right now I am fine because I have a ton of other VNs to play and in fact no time to play them..1 point -

Loving the speed they are translating this. Currently in the process of reading Midori's route and so far I've found it to be well done especially when you consider their speed. I get the feeling I'm not too far off from the end of her route though. Looking forward to the rest of the VN. It's one of the few VNs that has me looking forward to the childhood friend route. Not Runa I find her to be pretty annoying I'm talking about Yukino1 point
