Military/Official Organisations Recommendation
Kenshin_sama and 2 others reacted to Mr Poltroon for a topic
I thank you for your recommendations. Honestly, they're quite consistent. They're all things I really think I won't like. To start with, I tried watching Fullmetal Alchemist. Apparently I watched about half of it, but I couldn't keep watching. It's too dark a show for me. This is also one of the concerns I have with your other recommendations. Keeping in mind the I dislike dark stories, shounen, and that action does nothing for me, I see nothing in those recommendations that would lead me to like it. This could change once I start something, the problem is starting. Stuff like Youjo Senki hooked me in with its historical setting, and stuff like Psycho-Pass hooked me in with the cute girl protagonist, but most of these don't quite have anything like that. From the synopsis'... I'll consider Hellsing Ultimate and Guilty Crown. If I like either of them I might try some of these others. It'd be good if my horizons expanded a little. It does look that way, yes. But, chances are, I'll only consider reading it in a few years. Oh, well. I commented on this one, being one I really liked (Sound of the Sky). You would have me expend my precious time on this... thing? Ok.3 points -

Hehe, i'm going to start Fate/Stay Night. I've waited 4 years, 4 years since i started VNs, but finally, i'm playing Fate/Stay Night. That's why i didn't play all the highly-rated VNs, so i could play them whenever i want and be mind blown.2 points -
I just started rewatching Interviews with Monster Girls, with my wife, and let me just reiterate what a delightful show this is. Lovely bright fleshed out characters, the fastest introduction to all the important characters in a series I can recall in recent times, and engaging dialogue. Great stuff.2 points

Saku Saku Weird Translation?
Dreamysyu reacted to Mr Poltroon for a topic
It was there, as well. You will notice that she had a tendency to pull out some... interesting expressions some Americans wouldn't even get. Your counter-example doesn't work. For it to work, the situation must be analogous -- the guys in Dies Irae should speak the language the VN would be translated to for the example to be analogous. As German isn't English, this isn't the case. We're asking for a solution for an impossible problem. If people speak English in Japan, as is the case in the translation (even if they're technically speaking Japanese), there is no way to differentiate it from the actual English language English people speak. What, then, is Japanese language in this strange world? Still Japanese? The actual English? Did English and Japanese swap in this universe? Let's tackle this from another perspective: What if we tried to replicate the experience the Japanese had? Many believe this is the best way to localise a work. The Japanese were face with a character who constantly used words in a language they didn't speak, yet were familiar with (English is an international language, and plenty of English words have been... incorporated into a Japanese person's vocabulary, even if with a skewed meaning). This situation is analogous to most of Chrono Clock's player-base. If you're playing a translation, it is likely you do not speak the Japanese language well, or at all. But if you're playing a Visual Novel, there's also a high chance you're familiar with Japanese media (maybe even know the occasional word). With all this in mind, the idea isn't bad. Now let's look at D.D's character. Would it make sense for her to spew these random Japanese words? Considering she's a Japanese obsessed otaku, yes. Considering they're actually speaking Japanese written in English, no, since we don't know what Japanese written in Japanese represents. Too many questions to make sense of. Let's tackle it case by case. 1st - The UK speaks English, written in English, and the Japanese speak Japanese, written in English. This may be the most natural assumption, but that completely removes Japanese from the script, and also creates the conflict: What happens when a Japanese character meets an English character -- which is the exact problem we're facing. If there is no way to discern Japanese from English, half of D.D's quirks are thrown out the window. As we want to avoid the experience being different between versions (English and Japanese), something else but similar must take its place, like overplaying the British side (and if she were American, then RIP translator). And this being the case... What IS the Japanese in the script? 2nd - The UK speaks English, written in Japanese, and the Japanese speak Japanese, written in English. This would be the second most natural assumption, and D.D's use of Japanese may lead one to conclude this. Generally removes the problems, so long as the English reader accepts the English in this universe is not for them to understand. I'm not, however, sure if the script mentions whether she's speaking another language when stuff is written in Japanese or not. If it is, then the deal is sealed. If it isn't, then ambiguity remains. 3rd - The UK speaks Japanese, written in Japanese, and the Japanese speak English, written in English. This could also be the case, though it would be virtually indiscernible from the previous one, and the script might contradict it. Given all this, had I been put in the position they were... I'd have likely done the same thing or try to make her use obscure British slang as often as possible -- though I'm not sure how feasible this is, because not only would it have to exist, I'd have to know it or be able to research it.1 point -

After reading Grisaia no Kajitsu two years ago, i've read Meikyuu and Rakuen. Meikyuu: After stories were fine (Sachi>Michiru>Amane>Makina>Yumiko for me), while Grand Route was great and the highlight of the series for me. Rakuen: Prologue was pretty great but i didn't like the main story very much (crappy third-person narrative, lame villains and weirdly convenient ending turned me off). Overall, still a solid trilogy. Kajitsu>Meikyuu>Rakuen for me.1 point -

Probably the least dark ones would be K and Gundam 00. The fact that they are all dark in nature is my personal taste spilling over. If you want something more fun you could try The Irresponsible Captain Tyler, Jormungand or Full metal Panic. Joker Game is at least decent, and somewhat has mind-games and strategies. I guess Date a Live could also be called military-ish in nature (albeit, very loosely). If you don't like dark stuff and angst, you should probably stay away from things like Hellsing or Ghost in the Shell. It may also be worth checking out Drifters, a slightly more obscure anime which starts out pretty dark but gets considerably lighter. It is both historical as well as militarised . The protagonist meets warlord oda nobunaga and basically tries to fight against the discrimination towards demihumans and quell the lands political unrest. While it has more fantasy than most anime on your list, it does fulfil several of your criteria. Sengoku Basara may also be worth checking out.1 point -

If you don't like dark then black bullet may not be such a great idea. If you like cute girls, kiddy grade and even more so kancolle can be prioritised Strike witches the movie is what made the original series really complete and very enjoyable.1 point -

Well, I mean, a single word in Japanese can warrant an entire sentence in the target language, depending on context. If you can give an example, it would be of a lot more value to the discussion. If nothing else, for the benefit of those of us who aren't likely to read the translation.1 point

Of the better shows I'm happy to recommend: Gate (seconded) Ghost in the shell standalone complex (quite old but a classic). A futuristic special ops organisation. Kiddy grade - in my opinion an underrated series about a futuristic organisation of super powered altered humans with a complex organisational structure. Legend of galactic heroes (as per Clephas) - a classic but now ancient about all kinds of space military / political intrigue. Full Metal Panic (as per Clephas) - mecha military classic, new series due out next year (at last!) Black bullet - an organisation of altered human sidekicks. Kancolle - anthropomorphised battle ships of cute girls. Much more interesting than it sounds. Strike witches 1, 2 and movie - You watched the first according to MAL, if you can get past the fanservice, it's actually a great show about a strike force of military teenage witches. Brave witches is its lesser sequel but still good. Star blazers 2199 - rehash of the classic starblazers military scifi starship series.1 point -
Unluckily, that doesn't spare us from terrible translations. But it's a start.1 point

On a more serious note, social media has basically become a method for people to self-isolate from opposing opinions, which is one of the primary reasons I hate it in a more general sense... while I'm not fond of social and peer pressure, I did like it when I didn't have to worry about racist politicians obtaining political power on the federal level...1 point
