  1. There is a new Kickstarter update where they respond to our questions from the last one. (Read the whole update here.) First, it would appear they are going to make a Patreon to support the new pass that is being done to the game. Also, in response to questions about whether native english speakers and TLers with JP knowledge being involved, their response was promising: Also, a correction to something I said when the last update came out: The 18+ patch IS available for non-backers now, and has been for a little while it seems. This wasn't mentioned in any update on their KS, and so I assumed it was never made available. So if anyone were actually waiting for the patch, you can buy it on their website. Overall it seems like there is hope for this project after all. This new pass will hopefully improve the TL significantly, and it would appear MiKandi wants to set things right, instead of just abandoning ship completely.

  2. Panzer Hearts is a visual novel filled with romance and adventure. The setting is an alternative WW2 where the Third Reich is replaced with a war mongering “Empire” that is terrorizing its neighbors. The Empire has been in existence for a long time and it’s architecture and mythology combine European and ancient Egyptian themes into a unique concoction. The young men and women born and raised in the Empire see the war of aggression as justified. In our protagonist’s case, a chain of events and a cry from his past make him question his loyalty and his side on the conflict. The game contains a minigame where the player gets to build WW2 tanks. In Panzer Hearts you take the role of a young soldier, Bastian. Wounded in battle, Bastian gets a second chance to serve the Empire in a factory producing tanks. Some of the people in the factory are linked to Bastian’s past and some to his future. They say love is blind, but in this case love and where it leads our young protagonist can completely change his future and the course of the war. Progress 78/100 % We are developing our character art from Western Cartoon style to Anime style! Otherwise the game is pretty closed to finished! Staff or Team Members We are three friens from Helsinki, Finland (Europe). Also we have support members all over the world (U.S.A, Brazil, Russia...). Please consider helping us on social media. It would help tremendously! <3 Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/panzerhearts/ Tube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC3LM74CiiWragQduYU-OEbA Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/panzerhearts/ Twitter: https://twitter.com/PanzerHearts <3 THANK YOU FOR YOUR INTEREST in Panzer Hearts! <

  3. I know there are different visual-styles of anime/manga. You got the Ghibli style and the semi-realistic one etc etc When we started development of the game for the picture seen below, we wanted to give it a unique look. Not just because we would (hopefully) gain more attention but also because I have never been a fan of something that is mainstream. But still, I am interested in hearing your opinion. If you were to play a 2D anime-game or watch an anime film with this style, would that be uncomfortable or ugly to look at in your opinion?

  5. Just to add, before people start a crusade to burn me on a stake - Nekopara isn't a bad game. In fact, it's really good at what it wants to be and I love it - both because of it's outstanding quality and effort Sayori puts into it. Still, I want to see more serious games and those, that put a lot more focus on telling great stories, rather than just offering a couple fun moments with cute characters that cause diabetes. That's something, you should already be able to answer yourself, judging by your knowledge. To keep things short - no, it isn't. The japanese eroge industry is currently facing a crisis of sorts and all I can do is hope the issues which appeared there won't suddenly spread to our growing market as well. Everything depends on our western creators and japanese developers, trying to stand on this new ground. It wouldn't. Nekopara is a moege/charage hybrid. It doesn't revolve on storyline, but events and characters, focusing on relationships that form between them. So you're not wrong by saying it's an excuse for porn

  6. But isn't it the same with pretty much every form of media nowadays? No genuinely great movie can beat Transformers and that recycled mess of a Star Wars episode we've got lately when it goes to profitability. But that doesn't mean good films aren't made - and that we can't see many of them in the same cinemas that get filled with people looking for mindless entertainment. A platform might be full if filth but still also host valuable products and give them more positive exposure they could hope for without it - I still think that's the case with Steam. It's not really a zero-sum game, because people watching/reading complete shit in most cases won't be that interested in more demanding stuff anyway. Most people on Steam won't touch the "Weeb crap" because of their biases (which, BTW, are not a new thing, more like decades old), but those with enough knowledge about Japanese media or enough curiosity will find their way to high-quality stuff as long as it's available. And that limited interest can make the effort of basic localisation and putting it for sale worth it - let's not kid ourselves, Western markets (and even PC market in general) are not a priority for JP developers and only affects their policies in minor ways. They won't all switch to producing Nekopara sequels because of Steam. But they might bring us more English versions of various products because of Steam. And really, is JP market that much better? Even the shitty western VNs like Sakura series only mimic what was popular for ages in Japan. There's ton of bad, questionable, laughably bad VNs and Dating Sims that sells tons of copies in Japan, it's just not what we, as admittedly a bunch of niche-audience snobs, focus on. :] I think Steam still allows it as long as the patch is only available off-platform and not linked in the game itself. If I'm wrong though it would be a huge problems for many VN publishers, that rely on this unlockable content to make any sales (even with some Japanese games - I'm not sure if the recently mentioned Nekopara would make any sense without Hentai scenes - if it does I would like to know BTW, because I've always though of these games as overly-elaborate set ups for porn segments :p).

  8. Oh, oops, I wasn't talking about Fuwanovel either. I didn't state it outright, but I was mainly referring to Steam. I seriously need to fix that writing habit... Fuwanovel is the only forum I've come across that doesn't irk me very frequently, and is generally pleasant to interact with. Very good points here. That being said, I don't think it'll hurt the market too too much. If we were to take a VN like Dies Irae, for example, which was marketed as a game with a free common route and 2 separate payments to break up the pricing a little, I think the publishers did an excellent job addressing the stigma associated with high-priced VNs on the Steam platform. Imo, this is an excellent example of how to adapt a product to a hostile market. I don't know how well it was able to do as far as actually selling the product, but Steamspy reports that at least 58,000+ people own the game, which is quite a step up from Grisaia (34,000+) and Clannad (40,000+). Even if that figure doesn't translate to great sales figures, it will generate conversation and interest, which can only serve to further its long-term profitability. It is fairly disappointing that games like Nekopara (381,000+) are performing so much better than the more serious games. Not that I'm upset at how well it's doing at all since it does seem to have some high quality fanservice, but I'd rather see quality stories take the lead on sales instead. I don't think this kind of thing is unusual even in mainstream games either, if the f2p mobile market is anything to go by. However, I don't think the presence of supergiants in the VN market will ever cripple the desired profitability of a good niche. Even if big name companies start making their way toward games with widespread appeal, there will be someone to fill in that gap and continue to push out games that a niche market will want to buy (the classic gaming niche is a great example of this). As long as rich, story-driven visual novels make a fair amount of money, there will be a market for them. The only real downside here is that producers won't be urged to put them out as often as they should, but at least they're easier to appreciate when they do come out. Besides, it's not like we didn't have a similar problem before Steam when nukige were taking up licensing slots as well (and I'm pretty sure they still are, lol).

  9. So happy to heart that you are interested in our project! Consider following us on our social media sites <3 There are some CGs planned, but only in minor role. Our tank building mini games takes some energy - there are quite many identifiable WW2 tanks the player can build in the factory. The publish date is going to be early 2018 on Steam. We are still pondering on the price, but surely it will be less than 10 US / Euros.

  11. The skip button was removed from the interface. That is what he said. However, skipping text was not removed from the game. You may still skip text by using CTRL. There is also an option in the menu to select if you want to skip unread text or not. If the game truly had no skip button I'd cry. There is a lot of repeated text. Incidentally, playthroughs of the common route also introduce a lot of new text, including different Rin actions/dialogue. EDIT: ProTip: C and Z (skip and rewind keys respectively) may be mapped in the menu so that you don't have to hold them down. Press it once and it starts skipping. Press it again and it stops. No bodily harm to your fingers.

  12. Aw come on, why take that out at all? Being able to skip read text is kinda sorta important for some of the foreshadowing to Refrain, because every time you complete a route the text changes to reflect Rin's development. But without having that skip read text feature, readers will understandably want to skip the entire common route and get nothing from the altered text. Granted, it's not entirely necessary to understand the changes Rin goes through since the story does explain them directly, but it's still fun to see those changes take place. So yeah, that is quite the blunder on Key's part. Dafuq they do with her panty shots!? On that note, I was not aware Komari's panties changed pattern based on your choice of donuts. Very interesting. Shame I'll never get to put that into practice with this version of the game.

    Death (>-<)

This felt super-relatable to me. Death is nothingness, I think there's literally nothing to fear in it (unlike life itself, which can punish you in most horrible ways). For me, if anything, thinking about might bring anxiety about the lost opportunities and things I will not be able to experience. The pass of time on the other hand, the ultimate fragility and most likely futility of all our achievements, IS scary to me. People are usually pretty bad at dealing with lack of purpose or feeling that their existance is meaningless. And being an atheist like myself, it's really hard to find a deeper meaning in all of it. The ultimate conclussion for me is that there is no meaning to life apart the meaning we give to it ourselves. It's not healthy to avoid the topic of death completely, because it will come back to us eventually and we should be prepared for it at least to some extent, but we should focus on living our lives to the fullest. There's no afterlife, no greater order of things, just a life that we were given by fate and the possibilities it brings. And if use those possibilities wisely, we should be able to look at it later with little regret. Of course, if chance allows us, but worrying about things completely beyond our control in unhealthy.

  18. I am very glad they decided not to just write off the project and move on. The temptation to do that is very powerful (throwing good money after bad, and all that) but it really wouldn't have done good things for their reputation. Look at MangaGamer's shaky reputation early on (because that's what they did with a lot of their early titles); it took them quite awhile to shrug it off.

  21. Why not just pretend they don't exist? I don't mind at all that VNs are getting more exposure if it leads to more sales and localizations. No matter what it is you're talking about, mainstream interests will usually dominate conversations on popular social platforms, and the majority of those people will want to stick to what they know and unfairly criticize anything that takes them out of their comfort zone. And I think that's fine; there's really no need to justify your hobby unless you feel the urge to start an argument you might not win (I've done it a few times myself, lol). Personally, I feel that the less involved I am with toxic communities, the easier it is for me to enjoy what I like. Sometimes it's just not worth it to be active (or even just to lurk) on a popular forum.

  22. As a collection of side stories or fables they are fine, good even, I think it was my misperception that it would be structured in a similar way to something like Rewrite that tainted the overall experience for me. If I knew beforehand that the routes would just be their own separate thing that went along with the main route and not building towards a grand finale I probably wouldn't have been as disappointed. Honestly though I really didn't care about the underlining themes, I read stories to escape reality, not to learn anything to benefit it . What really drew me into the main route was the character arc that Miyashiro Takuru goes through, how he changed and matured in response to the plot. As a character story about the loss of innocence I think the main route strives as a stand alone story.

  23. The routes enforce the story's theme rather than doing something else entirely. Chaos;Child is about dealing with information and the burden of the truth. That's not to say that there are no problems in the way they were executed, it's just that they serve that purpose well. This can be, especially, seen in Hinae's and Nono's routes where both where about truth and falsehood. Uki also serves this concept pretty well, but Uki was really boring. I think the routes also connect to how important information can also be pointless in the grand scheme of things, but that's a bit of a stretch. I don't think the main theme would have worked out without the routes, but it will take me quite a lot more to convince you and i am not sure if you care about themes in general.

  24. Less people knowing what VNs are doesn't lead to availability and fair pricing, no matter how you look at it. For someone like me, who don't know Japanese well enough to read original releases, healthy global market is crucial. And elitist thinking simply doesn't help with that. I can't reasonably discuss your financial situation, but for a long time I don't really buy games other than VNs and still, without Steam sales I would most likely look for another hobby (or give up on my principles and start pirating things). Gamers in general might be "spoiled" and clueless about VNs, but it's not their role to know better or care about VN developer's interests, they should care about their own interest and their fun. And maybe it's the role of fans like us to spread a positive image of the genre and educate people a bit. But above all, we should fight for a place where VNs are accessible to as many people as possible and still profitable enough for developers to make them produce/localise more. Steam is a powerful platform that can most likely deliver both, no matter how it's dominated by the "filthy masses" masturbating to Sakura games bought on sale for 5 bucks. Or whatever image of Steam VN reader you have.

  25. I can't say I agree with this. You know that if you purchase a game like that, you are basically sending both SG and the original creator a message that their approach works and they can continue selling future games in the same way. I personally would rather skip the game altogether than purchase it from them.

    Death (>-<)

I feel like I can totally relate with you mate. Usually we don't think of death as something real that will happen to us. We kinda "know it", we are "aware" of it, but I don't think most of the time we really understand what it means, that like any other day or moment in your life you've been waiting for, death will also eventually come. The hard part is accepting this "eventually" as real, and I myself can only sometimes achieve it for a brief moments in which my heart thightens in my chest, I get shivers and get lightheaded. It fades rather quickly though, as if your brain is applying some sort of self-defense mechanism to prevent you from having that enlightenment. Now, what I've come to realise though is that perhaps I don't really fear death itself, but rather the unavoidable pass of time, i.e, change. Everything we know and love will eventually disappear. Life itself will also disappear, and then nothing else will come for the rest of eternity. When I think about that I get some serious anxiety. I feel like I need to be doing something else with my life, right now, in this precise moment, but I don't know what, which further aggravates the issue. I cannot tell you how to overcome this, since I'm lost myself, but thinking about the alternative might be slightly comforting. Or rather, the lack of alternative. There is no point in between a finite and a non-finite life. Do you really believe thinking of an eternity to come would be less painful? An infinite time, in which you've already experienced everything you possibly could infinite times, and there's still an infinite amount of time remaining. Would you call that being alive? I could certainly tell that I'd rather be dead. For sure. I know, I know, that is not really reassuring, it's equivalent to tell someone "if there is not solution to your problem, then why bother worrying about it?". But that's just the way thing are, for you, for me and for everyone that has ever existed and for those who are yet to come. What alternative do we have but to accept it?
