  1. Supporting Moenovel is like paying to be able to suck a million dicks.

  2. Buying it just condones censorship. If you care at all about getting quality releases in the west, please don't give Moenovel your money.

  3. 1) Japan invented the Visual Novel as it is understood now, but it is a medium that you should feel free to take in a direction that fits your story. Don't conform to Eastern expectations merely because the medium came from over there. 2) The biggest mistake many developers make when making a VN is thinking 'lots of choices are a good idea'. The fact is, relevant choices are good, irrelevant/random ones are bad, unless you are making a comedy. Minigames are a waste of time, break the flow of thought, and turn away those who just want to read the story. Adding in minigames for the sake of having minigames is a BAD IDEA. 3) It depends. Gimmicks like particle effects sometimes enhance the experience, sometimes they don't. I primarily play Japanese VNs (almost exclusively), but I can tell you right off the bat that for every visual novel where I've seen a new mechanic, visual effect, or sound effect used effectively, I've seen five that manage to ruin the experience using the same tools. If I have a piece of advice for you, it would be to focus more on the use of BGMs than obsessing over voice-acting. A solid soundtrack that is used to effectively create atmosphere and mood in tandem with backgrounds and character sprites can turn a trite story into a work of genius. Voice-acting, to be quite frank, is a budget-buster item that is just as likely to blow up in your face as create a good effect. Good voice actors are expensive and directing voice actors is a specialized skill that takes a peculiar type of genius to get just right... so unless you have a skilled set of volunteers willing to take payment upon success, I don't recommend getting overly attached to voice acting. My somewhat acidic viewpoint on voice-acting comes from having watched voice-actors go from random staff members and regular joes dragged off the street to professionals that make careers off of their vocal cords and dramatic skills with their voice. Edit: I'm sorry if I sound harsh, but I've had a friend go bankrupt because he overreached after some initial success in game-making... but voice-acting, sometimes seen as a necessity by the uneducated, is in fact just a luxury if you don't have the budget for professional work.

  4. Yeah, turns out they didn't give a shit. The FCC voted on the Net Neutrality repeal today, and it came out with 3-2 in favor of it. I hoped it wouldn't happen, but I half expected this repeal to pass. So much for having a free and open internet. Just goes to show how much influence money has when it comes to policy in the U.S. https://www.nytimes.com/2017/12/14/technology/net-neutrality-repeal-vote.html

  5. After 2 years learning Japanese you most certainly already know that it takes a lot of motivation to stick with it, so I honestly woud opt for the one that appeal to you the most, otherwise it's likely that you give in halfway through and end up losing your time.

    Hey!

はじめまして! I'm Eris! I don't have any friends to talk to about my enduring obsession with eroge so I'm really excited to get to know you all! I'm really happy to see a good number of women on these forums, too -- even working in the sex industry I've never met someone of my gender who plays these games (although, to be fair, I don't usually ask). I hope to learn a lot from you all about being a better and more efficient weeb. (。・з・)ゞ よろしくお願いします~

  7. These are my people!! I really like games with a large heroine pool and RPG elements. Love Eushully, AliceSoft, SofthouseChara, etc. Just spent the last week playing though Persona 5 (Makoto!!) and currently deciding between committing to Daibanchou or Aselia or playing something a little lighter after 100 hours of IT'S TIME, INMATE.

  8. Reposting this from the other thread: I have a review copy and have been playing it for several days, though not very actively. I am still early in the common route (encountered no choices so far). Some thoughts about what I've read so far: The script contains occasional bits of sexual humor. A woman sending the protagonist a picture of her cleavage to cheer him up hasn't been altered. This is something that would have been changed in IMHHW. I don't yet know if stuff like bath scenes have been changed, if more explicit sexual talk is changed, or how the lead-ins to h-scenes and stuff are handled. The translation so far is considerably better than IMHHW. For the common route at least, it feels like a native English speaker actually touched these scripts at some point in the process. There are still occasional grammar errors and the prose is pretty sloppy. I expect a large level of inconsistency from a Moenovel game this big, so other parts of the game may be considerably worse (or better). As of now though, I'd say this translation is a little below average based on what we typically see from official releases.

  10. I like to call it The Catmaid's Tail, but I should probably be saving that joke for when the next season of The Handmaid's Tale debuts. But the parallels are haunting.

  16. yeah sounds like a great idea, especially if you have the experience to execute it. It was actually western VN that got me started as before then I wasn't a big fan of Japanese media (oh how things change) but I think that western VN are crucial to the growth of the whole genre as it can bring in whole new audience demographics and the interest/funding that they bring. The first visual novel I took real interest in was 80 days (https://vndb.org/v20013) which may be much more like a game than most VN but that made it so accessible. Not to mention the writing, art and gameplay were all brilliant. Even western VN in the more usual style like the onesyou've covered do wonders for making visual novels more accessible. Loads of people talk on here about how much VN are growing and I think western VN are a significant factor in that trend. So in short, YES! KEEP DOING IT! Also I just like having articles to read

  17. Glad to see one person enjoying Gahkthun and another person considering playing it. It's a lovely game with a lot to recommend it. I think Inganock is ultimately a better story, but it's not that big a gap, and I found Gahkthun to be a very enjoyable read.

  18. I actually had to look that up to remember it, but that was in a thread with a discussion about the translation quality of Tokyo Babel not in one of Clepahs' review threads. But that was actually an interesting thing in Dies Irae, I expected them to have lots of grammatical and spelling mistakes in the German sentences, but surprisingly it was pretty much all correct, at least the parts I checked (I didn't read all of them). I'm sure that they either had a translator with good German knowledge or an editor helping out. BTW, I started reading Ourai no Gahkthun from Liarsoft. I had some trouble at first to get it working in Windows 10 since it always stopped working after 5 - 10 minutes, but after setting it to Windows 7 compatibility mode, it worked like a charm. The only small annoyances left are the small font size and the starting intro playing with approximately ~800 decibel sound intensity without any possible option to lower it. Technical problems aside, I'm positively surprised so far. When I read Shikkoku no Sharnoth years ago, I liked the atmosphere and setting, but the writing was a bit too poetic for my taste with a rather chaotic story flow - and not to forget the silly mini game. But Gahkthun seems to have kept all the things I liked, like the fascinating world building and the great atmosphere, but managed to get rid of all flaws from Sharnoth in the writing and story flow - at least so far. The fictional Offshore Academia city in France the story takes place gives me feelings of nostalgia from my visit of Paris last year, and the wonderful classic soundtrack further supports the whole mature feeling of the setting - it just oozes atmoshere. Neon is also a very likable character who fortunately avoids to fall into the trap of being cliché cute. Since the story is told from her perspective at the beginning, the VN has strong otome vibes. I just met Tesla so I can't say too much about him yet, but he looks pretty cool so far - I think the both will make a great couple. So the first impression is pretty good - I can hardly believe that I was rather critical at the initial announcement years ago. Though it has yet to be seen if it can follow up to the good first impression.

  19. I see, I guess the scripts are basically interchangable anyways, but this use surprised me a bit. :] I have one more question though - the google store page says it's an otome game, but isn't the heroine female? How is it otome then?

  20. Wait, is yandere normally spelled with katakana? Is it the same for other anime slang terms? Sorry for OT question, I've recently started learning Japanese so I'm curious. Going to add your game to my tablet's "to read" list btw. ^^
