  5. Wait… A nukige review? On this anti-porn blog? Well, I should probably start with saying a few things about my view on porn in VNs, to avoid potential misunderstanding – this will be a bit of an essay, so be sure you don’t mind a (small) wall of text not completely related to the game itself. My actual stance on pornography in games is very… Ambivalent. I deal with porn extensively in my university studies, wrote a whole thesis on fan-made erotica and I’m on principle anti-censorship. I’m also very disillusioned with porn and personally don’t really enjoy hentai animation – and while I try being open-minded, I have yet to encounter a piece of Japanese 18+ media that would seriously undermine this stance. What do I mean exactly by “disillusioned”? Porn, including that in the cartoon form, is oriented purely towards the sexual pleasure of viewer – the uncomfortable, voyeuristic sexual positions, extreme close-ups, unrealistic variety and length of the scenes have little to do both with how actual people have sex and with any kind of meaningful storytelling. The theme of sex and even explicit sex scenes, when used well, can add to realism and depth of a story, but porn as a formula is essentially hollow, apart from its purely “pragmatic” functions. Expecting it to be anything more, in my opinion, is delusional, both because it goes against its most basic principles and because people that actually want more from it are in minority and porn creators most often don’t see them as a viable target group. Hentai adds to this already problematic mixture a significant amount of cultural and genre tropes I personally can’t stand – including fetishizing virginity, the abundance of loli characters etc. Why do I even bother approaching a porn VN then? Well, Cute Demon Crashers, a free game created for the 2015 NaNoRen0 contest, is not a typical eroge – more than that, it’s more or less an anti-nukige, promising a focus on consent and intimacy that’s lacking in many Japanese erotic games (and, obviously, many Western ones as well). It also reverses the typical setup, with a female protagonist and predominantly male romance options. But, does it really succeed in delivering something significantly different? 6. Yeah, sure let's start an open source where every monkey can put his TL without any quality control. sounds like a great way to ruin a VN.
    2 points
  7. But isn't it just another way to write things? I like how Fata Morgana does things, but saying that every VN with a true route should be like it is basically the same as saying that all of them should be linear, which simply gives up a lot of potential VN's have.

  8. I don't know the people on /r/visualnovels that well; I'm sure they're not terrible. But Fuwa is an absolute gem. It has just the right amount of activity and traffic and good-natured people who are here to enjoy one another. This is a really good place to call home if you just want calm happiness.

  9. Vote: Going along with my favorite female MC: Cardia, from Code Realize, I add Van Helsing!!! Had to add my favorite boy XD (I put the images in spoilers, because I put more than one and then my post would be ass long xD) When you start the game, Cardia seems like your average female protagonist. She don't speak too much, she's a bit apathetic and her tiny sprite that appears in the corner of the screen severely lack in expressions. Together with her frilly and classy outfit, she looks like a porcelain doll. This gradually changes when more and more question about herself and her past start to pops up. And of course, because she made some awesome friends that are the boys. She changes into a more pratical outifit, starts smiling more, and keeps training so she can be useful when the action bits of the VN starts. Her character development is super refreshing to read! In the prologue, she ruins an infiltration plan for being too naive to even lie. In the routes, she almost leading the infiltrations! She doesn't back down even when she's wounded or weak and shouldn't be fighting. She fight with her boys until the end, even when they want to leave her behind to protect her. Of course, she's from an otome game, so romance plays a big role in the routes, but her proactive side and cute and pure side complement each other more than being at odds. Meaning, she would confront an incredibly powerful enemy alone just because she wants to see her loved one smiling again aaaaaw. (but she had a plan, mind you, she didn't charged in stupidly only with the power of love hahahaha) This story is mainly hers, and not just being told from her POV (well, in most routes at least). And it's incredible how she, an unvoiced MC that you can even turn off her portrait in game (who would do that???), can stand out given that the heroes are awesome as well! Otomate did a good job! She changes outfits early in the game, but I love her frilly dress... And now, to contrast with her sweet personality, we have the sarcastic and arrogant (but that often have the power he says he have) Van Helsing. He always have something snarky to say but just try to start talking about food and he'll become dead serious. He can be a bit tsun tsun at times, but that makes him looks even more adorable. His route is one traumatic event after another, what leads the poor guy to reject everyone to not drag his friends into the trouble, but Cardia didn't gave up on him and go help him with the help of the other guys. He's usually grumpy, and that makes his eventual smile all the more precious. Some pics!

  12. Vote: Kotori Kanbe from Rewrite Kotori is one of the more memorable main heroines I've seen in fiction. She's cute, has an incredibly great sense of humor, but she also has a great amount of depth and character development. Her character design is pretty and simple. I like the mix of braids, the flower decs, and the long brown hair. It's probably a bitch to take care of though. While I think Akane has the best rack (which Oppai Route agrees with) Kotori's is also nice and once I would prefer in real life, not too big, not too small. I also really like her casual clothes a lot. She has a simple pink sweater and checkered red skirt which fits well with her personality and overall design. She has some of the best sprites and quotes in the game. There's a reason people still reference and screencap Shake It Now and the handy small butt quotes. It's heavily agreed Chiwa Saito did an amazing job voicing Kotori and shows her super good range. I can't imagine Kotori's goofiness and emotional scenes being so good if it wasn't Ms. Saito voicing them. She breaks the mold of the typical hyperactive girl by actually being really smart and perceptive and has interesting character depth related to her guilt complex and dealing with emotions that she tries to write off. As far as VN main heroines go there aren't many I can think of where they elaborate in great deal of how they were as a kid and how they showed how and why developed into the person they were besides just one simple flashback. She's definitely no Mary Sue. She has flaws related to avoiding people and hiding her emotions when under deep stress that could definitely use some improving which she can in time. She's great when you take her on the surface as a really fun and charming person. She's still great when you look past that and see what she's really like and has to go through. These combined makes an amazing character and I really wish more fictional characters had both of these traits without big flaws holding them back.

  13. Thank you to everyone for being so supportive. I really didn't expect such a warm reaction to my post. I'm sorry to those who didn't find /r/visualnovels a welcoming place, I should have done a better job when I was a mod there in setting a more tolerant tone. Ah yeah I find that too, once they get a certain size it's so hard to engage in a conversation as it eats up all your time, you need to reply so fast and need the window open constantly. It's also harder to recognise people as there's a constant stream of new faces on busier servers, so it's hard to grow closer.

Since the salt lord SolidBatman did a thread rating people's waifus, I decided that it was finally time for me to rate your Kyonyuus. Since I am the official Kyonyuu King, I felt that this kind of thread would be befitting of somebody like me. Post your kyonyuus here and I will rate them accordingly.

  20. A good girl is feminine, shy and adorable to look at. Like a flower or glass, you must be afraid of ruining it with your touch. -8 for temperament, +2 for body type and eyes. 4/10.

  21. That is brilliant. Sounds like something I'd say if I had any confidence. I'd give her a 7/10. I like her look, but there's something about her that wouldn't really stand out to me. 9/10. Love kyonyuu elfs. Also, super glad the loli chick actually grows breasts. That makes me quite happy. It does count, but they're not big enough for my tastes. I'll give it a 5/10.

  25. Sorry about that but I spared you two absolutely horrifying nudity scenes so be grateful for that. Oh yeah I got pretty drunk in order to play it and I'm glad I did. The worst thing about it is that even if you removed the whole disgusting bug girl it would just be a completely vapid and shitty vn regardless. I need to dip my toes in that scene more what I have played so far is been pretty good.

  27. Kirisu is perplexing. I don't like tsundere much at all, but part of me argues that she isn't a tsundere, just a stubborn woman. Her excitement for science with Okabe is infectious and she generally is a fun character. That particular depiction isn't a great one, but I still like her despite tsundere character traits. 8/10

  28. Hell, it could've had great writing in Japanese, but the translation was apparently very mediocre and it may not have conveyed the quality of the original VN. But still, even with a trashy TL, some of the writing decisions were...questionable.

  29. That's definitely true in a sense. Comyu had this problem a lot. I didn't like a lot of the characters who had routes besides Mayu and Kagome. Playing through Benio's route was the worst.

  32. Personally, I love this genre. This type of VNs probably the best represent the unique points of VNs as a medium. Take Balrd Sky Dive 1 and 2 for example. 2 VNs x 50+ hours long for a single multi route mystery. It was so good, that I didn't even notice how fast I read it. Considering that it took me 3 weeks, that is a huge achievement. Then we have Dies Irae. I don't think that I need to comment much. The fact remains, multi route mystery genre allows supreme world building experience. The problem with enforced playing order is that many people confuse it with multi route mystery when they are 2 different things. While both are connected, they are not the same. Mostly people complain about playing unwanted routes to unlock the one way want. This is not the problem of multiple route mysteries, but rather of enforced playing order and terribly written characters

  33. That's a good point, standards for what is and isn't an insult, what counts as a greeting, whether people should reply or just upvote/like something, they all vary per community. Like on twitter, whenever I see a friend talking about feeling a bit down, I'm never sure whether I should "like" it as a sign of support, or whether "liking" that they're down is insulting? I haven't really participated too much here on Fuwa as I'm kind of anxious about getting too attached to any community anymore, but so far it seems really nice. I love the alerts for when someone quotes you etc, as it makes it much easier to follow things if you don't have time to check all the threads. Hahaha, that's amazing. Even automod-chan got her route. My bet is on her and gambs being the last ones standing. In other news, I've been informed by one of the /r/visualnovels mods that this post counts as harassing insanityy and they'll react accordingly, even when the post is meant to be about how great a mod she was. It seems I can't do anything right.

  34. From my limited knowledge (and this thread), I think you did just fine. There are obviously many people who do like the Reddit; communities almost always split in that way based on preferences. Fuwa has a different sort of crowd; and it serves a different function. The big problem happens when people who prefer something like 4chan or Reddit come to a place like Fuwa; they usually try to pull the decorum closer to what they prefer. They want access to new (and often softer/kinder) people, but they don't want to respect the etiquette here. Often their behavior comes across as mean/abrasive/trollish. It's probably fine for 4chan or Reddit, but it ends up being called out as bad behavior in this setting. It's not unique to a board like Fuwa; it happens everywhere, with almost every community. Thank you for the initial read; was extremely interesting! <3

  36. Vote: Roll Again! (Any comment post without a designated vote counts as a Roll Again when we do the drawing) Wow, I can feel the love you have for her, @r0xm2n, in your huge list of awesome things about her. She's cute and funny, but unlucky. I wouldn't mind seeing her win (with extra fan service even). Who doesn't love fan service, and she's super cute and flirty! Thank you so much for sharing her. I loved it! Oh, so now I know the female version of you @Plk_Lesiak! It's such a beautiful series. I love the art so much! I like all the different kinds of characters and pairings. But there's always something super lovely about Yuri. There's this innocence in much of it that I find super adorable. Sadly, my experience with most real-life girls doesn't quite mirror what you find in anime and VNs; so I'm right there with you, living out my cutesy girl-girl love fantasies in the Yuri games! And the crying is completely reasonable. We can get so attached to some of these characters; in many ways they come alive through our emotions. *writes that down as a good future idea for a short, VN story* @wei123, you should totally go with your original pairing! If you want to post again with just their names and the reference art, that would be okay. Just put a "Vote: YourNewCouple" at the top of the one you already did. Oh, that's beautiful. That he was willing to sacrifice his ideals for her. They make such a cute couple. She seems a bit more soft, and he's holding her; so lovely. Thank you for sharing them with us! What a cute and fun character @Ranzo! I love that she was your first love! So much love. Completely love evil, vindictive characters. I think they are seriously underloved (or maybe they've just sacrificed all the people who once loved them). Thank you for sharing; she looks like she would be a fun character to draw. <3 Aww, what a great submission @NowItsAngeTime! First, on looks alone, she looks like she'd be really fun to draw! I love all that hair and the braids! And I like how much you know her and seem to enjoy her character (and her "just right" breasts). Thank you so much for participating!

  37. It's kind of bullshit though. You're not being twisted for "wanting" bad things to happen to people so you can be a hero. Well, surely there are heroes with mental disorders in games and movies who might think like this. Bad things will always happen to people, the important thing is that you're a person willing to step up and help those people.

  38. I'm really glad you mentioned YMK, and thanks for sharing your experiences. Its been so long that I often under appreciate YMK because it was essentially my first serious VN, or at least my gateway into this medium. These days I think it is a bit of an under appreciated classic, but I really do think people would be better off reading it. Especially if you felt kind of lost in High School (or are currently a lost High School student). To address the part I quoted, I can tell you that it 100% the experience of bullying I witnessed in middle school was just like that. There is such a random element as to who becomes the victim, that it kind of scarred my ability to make genuine friends with people for years. It wasn't until Senior year of High School that I finally became comfortable enough with people to trust them. In 5th grade I was the new kid, and I was kind of shy. I became the victim pretty soon, and for the whole Autumn and Winter quarters I was the kid that the "leader" chose to victimize. Some kids seemed to feel sorry for me, and eventually developed a kind of friendship with me. But of course, they had to hide it. But do you know what really horrified me? When I stopped being the victim. After winter break, for god knows what reason. The leader turned on one of his henchmen. And not just a henchmen on the sidelines either, but someone who seemed like one of his good friends. All of a sudden I was accepted into the group as though nothing had happened. From 5th to 8th grade this continued. At some point in 7th grade I think the bullying got too much for that kid so he transferred, but the "leader" just found some other kids to replace the victim role. Throughout those years, for no discernible reason, my rank in the group increased. And I can tell you this, my one goal throughout that whole time, was simply not to fall back down to the victim role. I was never explicitly mean to the victims, but I did stand in the sidelines as the "leader" tormented them with people that were lower in the foodchain. I always felt kind of guilty for the passive role I played. And how I passively just accepted these promotions in that group. But I went to a really small school. If you were ostracized by that group, there wasn't another group you could join. By 8th grade though, enough of the leaders followers (including myself) all recognized that none of us liked him. And simply ran along with his antics for the same fear. So we split off and did out own thing. His group shrinked dramatically, to the point that he started befriending the people he was bullying before. To this day this is why I hate kids, because I still very vividly remember how shitty they are. And the fake masks they put in front of adults.

  40. Introduction Welcome, fellow Fuwamembers, to the FuwaRecognition thread. Starting this March, we’ll be highlighting some of the best contributions made by our members each month. From snazzy blog articles to delicious forum threads, and perhaps even a few things more on the shitpost part of the spectrum, we'll keep an eye out for the cream of the crop. And then we'll gather them here. Just for you. *holds up giant APPLAUSE sign* A-hem, so this is the first time we're doing this and it might be a bit rough; next time will be at the end of March. Anyways; without further ado, let's get to our highlights. By @Zakamutt. Threads Our first highlight on threads comes from two Ask Me Anything topics posted in the span of this month: from our dear provisional Tay, @Kaguya, and from the anti-moege task force founder himself, the saltlord himself @VirginSmasher. It’s now Kags’ fifth year on these dear forums, and members of new ’n old had a lot of questions, climbing over to 50 comments, almost unheard of in this day and age of lacklustre forum interaction. Even after the glory days of lolis long passed, Kaguya still swears close to his heart how they indeed are the master-race that rule over this weeb-dom, mostly in nukige form. Charming. @VirginSmasher’s AMA, on the other hand, is mostly an appreciation of past glory and his good friends, met before he died out, but he also remembered some newer members who are already becoming an integral part of these forums of today. Quite a lot of internal banter and jokes flew here and there, but it is quite touching to see even older members returning from long breaks of apparent irremovable death. As you might have seen, we have a new EVN on the horizon, or rather, KickStarter: One Last Crane, developed by @Blissful-Works This visual novel is being developed by an Indonesian team with some members over at Tokyo, Japan, and it has a an odd goal amount of 10,052 dollars, though this is due the publicization of the project being handled from Japan, which also makes the whole project page ask all money in yens. A risky play, let’s see if it pays out for them. The novel is planned on being released for four languages: English, Japanese, Chinese, and Indonesian. Quite the amount for still quite a small goal, but we’ll have to see how it pans out in the end, at least they are in no shortage of ambition. While the art-style itself is quite generic, it does look modern and does its job as presentation well enough, not to mention that the KickStarter page itself is quite stylish, but only time will tell how it’ll go over. All we can do is wait. @EastCoastDrifter has done something unique on the forums that no one would even think of. He loves space, and he has extended his love to the members of the Fuwanovel community by creating a Fuwanovel Solar System. Using a program called Space Engine, Drifter has taken the liberty to name all planets in this system after very prominent Fuwamembers. It’s a great tribute to the community and you should really check it out. Furthermore, Drifter says he’s not done, and has plans to create more Fuwa solar systems to feature more members in the future. If you want a planet named after you, feel free to post in the linked thread or contact Drifter personally. By @Arcadeotic and @EastCoastDrifter. Blogs Hi I'm Zaka and I'm the only one that cares about blogs on the team. Maybe. I didn't actually ask the other guys. Shit. So uhh, here's my recs... @Clephas writes accessibly about (for the most part) untranslated Japanese visual novels. This time, we have some posts about the recently released third VN in the Otome wa Boku ni Koishiteru series, of which the first actually has a translation by MangaGamer. Unfortunately, the second is where people think it actually got good. We start with a more general note on the series, then move on to a review of Otoboku 3 itself. While Clephas has been writing for quite a while, @MaggieROBOT is a bit newer to the scene. She focuses on Otome and BL VNs, and for this post we'd like to show you her post on an upcoming BL visual novel (fresh from the pot, baby. That thing is probably the first blog post to come right after this one. Oh yeah. That's how we roll. - Kaguya) as well as her review of the robot-romance Otome VN Sakuya. Go ahead and look for her post complaining about a trap in a moege not having a route if you like things on the more humorous side of the spectrum Just For Fun! During the process of writing this post. Well you know I’m all about that nepotism baby. That's right, this is just for you. Rising 1.8% female readership (thanks Maggie) local GM and blog post connoisseur Kaguya here. To close the blog review section up, we’ll be highlighting the post where I wonderfully delve into the mind of writer Setoguchi Ren’ya, explaining his past and his involvements with the little-known work The Shawshank Redemption as well as how that work affected the VN industry, finishing things with a bang as I explain his history and the hidden messages within Swan Song. And finishing things off in a suitable grand scale, much like a writer who traps himself into writing continuously larger powerlevels until his shounen manga gets to a point where it doesn't even resemble the original, we will be looking at two posts made by Fuwanovel's current closest figure to Jesus, @Kiriririri (Who unlike our creator, did revive. How about that?) He died for our sins as he bravely made two deep posts about the current state of the VN community that were completely hidden by the evil staff... Until now. Gaze upon them and marvel, this is the true work of a genius!! February is over. We bled. We sweat. Friendships were broken and renewed, and old members revived from their graves and mingled with the new pringles to take us where we are now. And the community persists, as glorious as ever. March is here. And in this rewind, I declare FebruaryFuwa absolutely Fabulous!

  42. Mint Blancmanche (Galaxy Angel) I know, right big surprise that I would pick Mint, but she just has something that puts her above all the others, which is the fact that I was already obsessed with her way before I knew what a Visual Novel was. I grew to love Mint early on when I started watching the anime. I adored the fact that she presented herself as such a dignified lady while all the while she had a hidden vindictive, and merciless, edge to her. This is best exemplified in the episode in which she nearly wipes out her entire squad, just so she can avoid being seen in a compromising situation. Both the manga and Visual Novel opened up her character immensely by revealing that she is telepathic. This added a surprising amount of depth to her and to her interactions. Her route in the Galaxy Angel also had some of the most tender and sweet moments that melted my heart

  43. I present to you .... Michiru Matsushima (nicknamed ChiruChiru, also nicknamed Bottle Blonde). The chronically unlucky, dimwitted, fake Tsundere. From the Grisaia series (she also has her own spinoff Idol game). Reasons why I love her (let me count the ways) * Before I even played the game, and knew the first thing about the characters, she stood out to me, on looks alone. * Her voice is AMAZING! It's hilarious when she flips out (which tends to be often). And she has the girliest, most adorable giggles I've ever heard.... * Love her facial expressions, which are over the top... * Pretty much the funniest character ever. Her antics had me in stitches. Helped in part by having nice chemistry with the rest of the cast. * Her unlucky buttmonkey status, and her general dimwittedness, combined with the fact she throws her heart and soul into everything, just makes you want to cheer her on. * Peel back her Tsundere act, and she's a total sweetheart. She's there to put smiles on everyone's faces. * Always manages to have accidental fanservice moments at the beach (the first one got me pretty aroused as I remember). * Actually more then just the token comedic character. Her backstory reveals quite a lot of depth to her character (that goes for the whole Grisaia cast though). * She wears a cat on her head sometimes! Which she called KittyMeow... Artwork...

  44. 7.32/10 Still looks Key-ish but not bad. Loli-esque though. No bueno. I appreciate the bow tie, however. 3/10. Because we needed more balloon tit onee-sama looking characters in the world? At least her eyes are unique. Impossible to rate. Words cannot do this magnificent beast justice. 1/10. Reminds me too much of high school english class. 9/10. Look, I love anything that resembles Mel Kishida's artwork. Dark hair, soft appearance, pastel coloring. A winning combination. Having glasses doesn't hurt at all. 4/10. I was expecting something not so generic looking from you to be honest. 2/10. Have you ever seen art from europe during the medieval time period and wondered to yourself, "did they even know how to fucking draw?" That's how I feel any time I see Oyari's artwork. 6.5/10 Interestingly enough, her eyes appear to share the same style as Leiji Matsumoto's eye style. I like the bright eye color, though I'm not too big on her hair style. That said, she certainly is a decent choice. +1 for the choker gem matching her earrings and eye color. 0/10 All of us are now collectively dumber thanks to this meme picture. 0/10 Smoking is bad for you. 4/10 Lucia was at the bottom of my Rewrite girl list, even below the token loli with different eye colors. Her personality is annoying, as is the case with most tsunderes. Her face also suffers dearly from Key syndrome in that it looks utterly stupid. +2 for dark hair and blue eyes. 8/10 Of all the garbage in Grisaia, I always kept a soft spot for Michiru and she was the reason I quit reading the VN as I felt the treatment of her character, a character clearly suffering from a mental disability, was atrocious and disgusting. She genuinely cares about people and is adorably cute. I still fondly remember how happy I was for her at the start of her route when she thought she was going on a date with Yuuji, and how upset I was when he forced her to run instead. It wasn't funny, it was just cruel for no reason at all. She deserved better writing.
