Hello everyone, I am new to this forum and from Canada. I don't typically use forums, but this one appealed to me because fan translations have always played an integral role in my life and have shaped many of my life decisions. I joined because I want to learn more about how fan translators extract, translate, and repackage text files in visual novels. I also want to know how fan translators organize the translation workflow and which tools they typically employ. Currently, I speak French and English, but I'm also learning Japanese (at a snail's pace) in my spare time, and I hope to help the community translate visual novels into English once I have reached a high enough level of fluency (I'm legit still a complete n00b at the language). I hope that I can learn from everyone and help out one way or another.4 points

My experiences using JPN TL software and web translators to TL JPN VNs
VirginSmasher and one other reacted to Dreamysyu for a topic
I tried to read Little Busters ME in the past using ITH and TA (did VNR even exist back then? It was in 2013-2014, I think) I finished one route that way, and never tried to use a machine translator to read VNs ever since. The text was basically unreadable, I didn't get any enjoyment from it, and the funniest part was when different machine translators gave me almost opposite results. Like, I remember there was one sentence where the subject and the object of some action were literally replaced in different versions. Yeah, I know the technologies got better with time, but it's still far from perfect, from what I've seen. Jp parser, one the other hand, is pretty cool.2 points -

Subarashiki Hibi discussion

Finished Subahibi, and other than some plot point left behind I'm satisfied enough with the conclusion. My opinion in regard of mismatched date still the same though, although looking back at the production maybe at first SCA-DI intended this as 10th anniversary of Tsui no Sora before changing the year to 2012 in order to follow topical Mayan prediction (But it still didn't change the fact that the date was mismatch though). My life here is definitely change with one more VN finished XD. As for 'End of Sky 2' ending, I guess it'll better if I leave it to the internet mass guessing seeing that I'm quite bad at make my own theory for that lol. What I can say in regard of the ending is that the beginning was definitely uncanny considering that we have emotional climax before that, and the ED song for that is also uncanny as well. As for several questions that was asked here, here's my interpretation for the answer. I think that's all what I can write about guessing in Subahibi for now, and keep in mind that my theory here might be flawed though.2 points -
Wolf Tails (western VN review)
phantomJS reacted to Plk_Lesiak for a blog entry
Visual novels with the possibility to choose the protagonist’s gender are fairly rare, and genre's focus on storytelling and romance makes such a gimmick especially hard to pull off properly. Creating games like Loren: The Amazon Princess, with an option to choose between two full-fledged leads, one male and one female, each with their own personality and a set of romance options, takes a lot of work and only fits certain kinds of stories. On the other hand, VNs in which gender choice only changes minor details in the dialogue and the overall storyline struggle to make the narrative convincing – especially in the female version, which more often than not comes as an afterthought, created by slightly modifying the default, male scenario. Razzart Visual, the author behind highly-regarded yuri VNs Love Ribbon and Starlight Vega, is also the person responsible for two much less critically-acclaimed ecchi games, both of which featured female love interests and the ability to choose protagonist’s gender, making them in a way both classical romance VNs and yuriges. On May 4th 2018, Razzart's third game in this formula, Wolf Tails, was released on Steam, featuring romance scenario with a rarely-seen kemonomimi variant, that is wolfgirls, and a new artstyle. How does it compare to Razz’s previous projects and does it succeed in working both as a traditional eroge, and as a yuri game? Read the full article at evnchronicles.blogspot.com1 point -
In response to my friend @Mr Poltroon's grammatically-questionable-but-nevertheless-generous patronage, I've decided to utilize my artistic skills and produce a drawing that does justice to his favorite character, Kilometers Edgeworth. In short, I labored to reproduce the following piece that I found on an insider artists' hub known as Google Images: (I forgot to replace the transparency in his eyes with whiteness, so please don't use a dark skin or he'll look scary and deformed.)1 point

Today I finished Flowers -Le Volume sur Printemps- After such a long time finally a good MC in a VN. I loved Suoh's character development. From a timid and shy girl to a courageous, more open and friendly girl, who does everything to protect and help her friends. The last VN's I read were boring and I didn't have the motivation to finish it. However Flowers -Le Volume sur Printemps- was great. It had everything what I actually wanted in a VN. A nice story, good drama, a bit of romance and a very good character development! Furthermore I love every character in this VN, but Rikka was a bit annoying My favorite CG: I WANT TO READ PART 2,... PART 3 (SENPAIIIIII & A forbbiden love between Sister<3) ... & PART4 I will probably have to wait 4 years until all prequels are released in english... Come on JAST USA... Now I am feeling a void in my heart after finishing the first part. Why?1 point -
No, you're not the only one. I also wrote it previously that i dislike her obsession. It's just annoying and not fun at all. Fan-disc is a sore spot for all Tsujidou fans here.1 point

OK, first of all. If you're going to read Chaos;Child i recommend reading Chaos;Head first. It's a direct prequel after all. Now considering the story. Base plot is really interesting. Some people say that they like these VNs in this order (plot-wise): Chaos;Child -> Steins;Gate -> Chaos;Head. From most favorite to least one. Considering you finished Steins;Gate you can imagine how they like plot here, and these people really like Steins;Gate as well. Now as for me. I also really like base plot. Story was interesting to follow. It's more brutal than Chaos;Head, mostly because of having "some" pictures depicting... some things. But overall i still place Steins;Gate on 1st place. And the main reason for that - characters. When usual stuff happens (slice of life stuff, no investigations or anything) sometimes i was just enduring these scenes because MC is so damn annoying. His whining pissed me off. Not VERY often but that happened. Also there is one girl - I SO HATE HER MOST OF THE TIME. She has a route though and it's also quite interesting. You understand some things here. But before that i even turned off sound in some places just not to hear her. Dunno, maybe it's me, maybe i watched too much anime and read too many VNs, so after all that i hate some kinds of anime cliche stuff that sometimes happens here. Well, actually MC and that girl - are the only two things that i dislike here. Not always, but... There are such moments. It's also quite sad that there is no such character for me as was Makise Kurisu in Steins;Gate. No one i'm attracted to as i was attracted to Kurisu back then. Overall, story-wise it's pretty good. Worth it, i think. But Chaos;Head first, that's my recommendation.1 point -

I checked mine. It's a Steam version with +18 patch from NekoNyan. It had two random saves, but it is easy to delete them - just delete everything from the "User Data" folder in game directory. It seems that these were some early saves, as there was no gallery button active in main menu.1 point -

Hi and welcome to Fuwanovel For information on the processes of fan translations, the replies in this thread will help u a lot: For any further questions, you can post questions in the forums. Fuwanovel has a lot of experienced people in Fan TL such as @Clephas who is a demi-god in VN related stuff and helped with Dracu-Riot's english translation (a fan group TL, not the official one currently in the works by Sekai Project), and @tymmur who is the head of the Musumaker TL project. Obviously at home. The two obvious reasons are screen size and lack of interruptions. Another thing is 18+ titles and public transport don't mix. As for competition from other computer activities, I don't think it's a real problem. If I buy some new game and feel like playing it for hours, then I will play for hours (providing I have the time). It's not like I have to read VNs daily even if there is something else I would rather be doing. It does arguably make me more picky towards which VNs to spend time on, but is that a bad thing?1 point

A moege lover's take on Magical Marriage Lunatics!!
snowbell55 reacted to phantomJS for a blog entry
Magical Marriage Lunatics is an rom-com VN with heavy moe elements bought to you by the same company and scenario writer as the fan-favorite Princess Evangile, and available for purchase at MangaGamer. Plot / main theme of the VN is pretty thin; There are a total of 6 Heroines. The protagonist slipped into 4 alternate dimensions when he was a child and each time he met a girl there (btw this part is never fully explained; He simply just slips into the other dimensions in the past and the VN left it at that). Some weak excuse of an encounter happened afterwards and he made marriage pacts with them (The last 2 girls' pacts were made on earth realm). After coming to age, the 6 girls approached the protagonist all at once to make good of the pact made, but he must choose only 1 among the 6. First of all, I must say the most important thing to do in order to enjoy this game is to come into it with a blank state of mind and without expectations. I was sorely disappointed with this VN because I am a big P.E fan and I came into the VN expecting something similar in quality. Suffice to say, MML is nowhere near that. The breakdown: Graphics - Very moe in nature with hi-res colourful artwork, high contrast (overly so imo), and very cute heroine design: Not much to say here; It's a moe lover's dream come true, while people like @VirginSmasher will hate it Music - Average in quality. Much like P.E, not bad overall, but nothing particularly memorable or catchy to me. Characters - Not bad. The heroines are cute and likeable. The protagonist is written decently but his character is cliche-filled and nothing special about him stood out. Storyline - This is the part which disappointed me the most; It lacks depth, and the quality is nowhere near the likes of P.E at all. The biggest issue is the common route is excruciatingly boring. It's mainly just a bunch of random events which was very uninterestingly written and has almost nothing to do with the main theme of the VN; the marriage pacts. The storyline is not structured very well too imo; at the start, you meet all 6 girls and are given some thin backstory on the marriage pacts ---> SoL common route ----> choose a route to go into. End of story. Little effort, too, was given to develop the backstory between the Protagonist and the girls. The routes are better, but mainly because the common route is so bad it makes them look so. The quality of the writing here is nothing special and full of cliches. Not even close to P.E standard. This title also requires you to suspend your disbelief very heavily as it makes no attempts at all at being even remotely realistic (although I know this is a work of fiction, I still can't stomach the fact a talking bat can just waltz into our realm, talk to normal people, and even go shopping out in the open without causing anything near to a commotion). A lot of the story also makes heavy use of deux machina and feels very random; for instance events that happen inside a particular route (an example being what happened in the incident between the protagonist and Luce's father and his army after he revisited their realm in Luce's route) will go completely unmentioned elsewhere. Overall, I do not recommend this title even to moege lovers. At 45 USD, it isn't cheap and there are a ton of better moeges out there in the market you can get at this price (or cheaper). While it's not a bad VN overall, comparatively it just can't compete. Only consider this VN if you can come in blank and without expectations. Otherwise, you will inevitably compare it to other (better) titles, notice the flaws, and be sorely disappointed with your purchase.1 point -
Fuwanovel Confessions
tymmur reacted to Kenshin_sama for a topic
Congratulations on graduating! One thing I've come to realize after so many problems coming up for my family is that it really does matter a lot what you do before your mind matures at age 25. Because my family has such a difficult time adjusting to a cruel world, every single one of them has problems with divorce, finances, jail time, education, mental health, physical health, and/or drug abuse. The one thing I know they all have in common is that they actively avoid facing their problems, and they're okay with personal stagnation or even regression. And the major issue here is that they let themselves stay that way until 25 when your attitude towards life become hard-ingrained in your mind. What I'm trying to get at here is that as long as you have the will to acknowledge your problems and work continuously towards improvement, you really shouldn't get hung up over how much you accomplish in a short span of time. You have your whole life to achieve your goals and live your ideal lifestyle. And trust me when I say it's so much more productive to do what you're able to without putting pressure on yourself. It's become a recent topic of discussion with my therapist, because my dad forced me into an all-or-nothing mindset (which was later solidified during my time in the Army) that completely works against me in my studies, and it all stems from a self-imposed pressure to perform. I can't even begin to imagine what it's like to stay academically competitive as I'm only pursuing higher education for above average employment, but I don't think it's healthy for you to put so much pressure on yourself. If you aren't able to accomplish what you want at your desired point of time, try to think of it more as a temporary setback rather than a permanent block from your ideal lifestyle. Just remember, Einstein was a high school dropout!1 point -
