    It has happened...

Just like @Asonn's deleted thread earlier this year predicted, the worst has happened. You can no longer criticize companies the Fuwanovel staff works for. Some days ago people were shitting on Moenovel for releasing bad translations and how they are so bad but still have the guts to call themselves professionals. Okay nothing wrong in here, but when I posted bad stuff about Mangagamer BANG. Post deleted, me getting warning point. This is a warning for all Fuwanovel users. Please check what companies Fuwanovel staff works for before criticizing a translation, even if it is a joke. This was my 2nd warning and this post will probably get me a 3rd one so it was nice knowing you guys. Kiriririri, peace out!

  2. Not sure how academic scene works in your country, but my experience is that you can write a thesis about anything in humanities, if you are able to convince people there's something meaningful in the phenomenon - popcultural studies may be young, but they're only expanding and it would be absolutely doable to make a serious research project on VNs from the perspective of literary studies, game studies, fan studies etc. I even made a small project on VN fan translations for a conference, even though I never expanded it as far as I initially wanted. I also made my master's thesis on MLP fan porn, in no way a mainstream phenomenon, and it was in sociology, where the burden of showing what you write about is meaningful in the scale of the broader societal issues is a bit higher than in cultural studies. Even so, it's true that there's virtually no academic work on VN in the West - when doing research, I've been literally able to find one book about VNs and their anime adaptation, which wasn't very helpful or particularly interesting BTW. I imagine it's not much better in Japan, as popcultural studies are still very weak there. I'd say there are a few reasons for it: 1. It's an extremely niche medium, that is seriously absent from most people's popcultural knowledge - I think there many very curious aspects of VNs for both cultural studies and marketing, but simply too few people know them well enough to write about them in a meaningful way. Even in the academic world, it's the fans that drive various types' of media presence in the discussion and there's simply too few of us. 2. It's a medium connected to porn, which means it will very likely be picked up by porn studies or by no one. I don't think the stigma connected to porn is that bad in the humanities/social studies nowadays, but once more, you have to first learn about the medium in-depth and see its potential before you can write anything interesting about it. And the idea of VNs being "gross fanservice games for horny teenagers" definitely doesn't help with that. If I end my leave next year and go back to my academic work, I will surely try to publish something on VN fan translations in English. Maybe will refocus my PhD on it, because the current project surely isn't getting anywhere.

  3. I wrote about it in the AFSOS thread. The cuts aren't obvious, as scenario has been rewritten and replacement dialogues have been recorded. There are two "fadeout" moments in Hikari's route, but they actually happen in slightly different places than the original h-scenes. Other scenes are hard to detect. As for the fanservicey CGs - in onsen scene in common route nipples are censored, which looks weird, cause they were erased instead of being obscured by steam or whatever, but the scene is still there. Also, there's different CG for this scene when MC stands up, to not show his "rocket" directly - instead we see his back. But the scenario here isn't altered, so it's obvious what he has shown them All in all - I consider this properly done all-ages (or rather +17) version, just like it would probably be done for console edition. Certainly not "butchering".

  4. I don't really feel like creating a separate thread for it but, apparently, today it's exactly 3 years since I posted my first post on Fuwa. And I guess, here comes a confession: originally the main reason why I decided to register and start posting here was to become a bit more comfortable writing things in English. I started reading books in English and watching movies long before that and I gradually got to the point where my understanding was good enough that I started to enjoy them more or less the same way as the ones I watched or read in my native language. On the other hand, my experience actually expressing my thoughts was basically zero, so I thought, maybe that would make a nice experience to me. Confession 2: at first I was absolutely sure that my post count would never rise above 50 or something like that...

  6. ...the Era of Obnoxious Shilling for EVNs! It's been exactly a year since I wrote my first post around here and God damn it, it's hard to believe it has only been that long. This site seriously rearranged the way I'm spending my free time and provided me with tons of fun and a satisfying outlet to channel my questionable writing. I won't be doing shoutouts this time, because there are just too many people to list and I would most likely miss someone that deserves being mentioned, so I just want to thank all of you for putting up with me, and simply being awesome in this awesome little community. :3 My only regret is that in all this time I didn't find a way to contribute to the main site and help with the permanent crisis there... But, hell, I'm not going anywhere, so there's a good chance opportunities will still show themselves eventually. One can dream, at least... And, however things go, I hope I'll be able to do a few more of these Fuwanniversaries in the future.

  7. I hope you enjoy Strawberry Panic, that was my first taste of the yuri scene way back when. It also has one of the best supporting characters of all time. As for me it is still Bloom and it is still really wonderful and everything that I hoped it would be.

  8. Is that Dies writeup available anywhere? I'd be interested in reading it sometime.

  9. Writing about VNs for college has been done, if infrequently. I did an analysis of the community based off of personal experience and a detailed analysis of VN review bloggers for English class and got good marks, lol. That was actually the one I got the best rate on. I also did a book-style review of Dies Irae for the same class, using translations of Japanese bloggers' own analyses for opposition and backup both.

  10. Probably worth noting that a Japanese guy managed to graduate on a thesis on SubaHibi, and another did so with Eustia.

  11. Question: are you sure you can't, or is it just that nobody tried? VNs are still very niche, you know. I won't be surprised if it's actually the later.

  12. I am a curious man (sometimes I paid the price ) and female protagonists are not a problem for me (I venerate Estelle, heroine of Trails in the Sky 1 & 2 ). And so i read half a dozen of Otomes. One was really great (Mystic Messenger), three were very good (Amnesia: Memories, Enigma: & Fashioning Little Miss Lonesome), one wasn't perfect but has very cool elements (Collar x Malice), one has a lot of potential but was a bit too boring (Code:Realize) and one was...a major disillusion (Norn9: Var Commons) Edit : I forgot The excellent Will: A wonderful World (just like Enigma: It’s a a borderline Otome)

    Fuwanovel Confessions

@DreamysyuHappy fuwanniversary I can totally relate to your confession. Actually, the same kinda holds true for me as well, though before coming to fuwa I'd already been in several English speaking communities and the like, so the language probably was not the first thing on my mind. Still, there's that extra shyness that comes with having to express your thoughts in a language that you don't have a firm grasp of, and then there's the satisfaction when you manage to convey what's on your mind and the feeling of that initial shyness fading away... You kinda get addicted to that And the same as you, I've started to enjoy English media not only as much, but even more. At this point there's something about reading in English that stirs up my emotional side more than reading in my native language, for some reason and weirdly enough, as I'm aware it should be the opposite. Whatever.

  17. Rance X and ChuSinGura are the longest I'm aware of that does not repeat text. CSG being the longest with voice acting.

  18. I honestly think Hatsukoi protagonist was one of the most real protagonists i've read. I can't pinpoint exactly what i mean, but outside quite a few VERY stupid moments, he was pretty damn tolerable. He is donkan to nth degree, but he's doesn't read like some super generic protagonist.

  20. I like endings that fit the nature of the story and don't feel cheap or rushed. There have been times in the past when I've lamented happy endings but, as a contrast, the times when I did get a sad ending I sometimes wished for a happy ending instead. What I really want in an ending is it to feel justified. Happy or sad. Hell, I'll even stomach a deus ex machina ending, as long as there is some establishment of the possibility of that happening. I preferred the somewhat happy ending of Swan Song to the depressing one and I preferred Phorni's ending in Symphonic Rain over Al Fine(though I did like both of them)

  21. Bro, you’re like one of the wisest people on this site. I remember reading one of your posts when I was the new kid around the block. One things you said to me was that you liked my name because I was inspired by Hate+ You’re like a walking enclyopedia for the visual novel medium, well other than @Clephas I greatly appreciated your wisdom. Keep those EVN blog posts coming. We are on the cusp of a EVN renaissance!

  24. I recommend looking at Google Tips & Tricks. Especially that first example under "How to Google It". Then just search keywords like "nodvd" "alpharom" and the known piracy sites. Might not be super helpful for the pedostuff though.

    It has happened...

Personally insulting other users or staff members is against the rules. Derailing threads is also against the rules. You did both. In addition, you were given a verbal warning a little while ago specifically stating that you are walking on thin ice, and if you continue trolling/ breaking the rules, you will get another warning point. Bcause of this, not giving you a warning point for this behavior when it clearly warranted one would be strange. There is no special treatment for anyone on Fuwa. If you break the rules, making a thread pretending you didn't won't undo your actions. (And might just make things worse.) I think it's only fair that people are informed of what happened, instead of just seeing your misleading side of the story, so I won't hide this thread, but lock it. If you have an issue with your warning point, please PM a staff member and we can discuss it, though seeing as you were given a verbal warning saying this would happen if you continued breaking the rules prior to this, I fear it might not be of much use. To anyone else reading this, of course you are free to criticize people on this site, be it staff members or not, if it's constructive and not just ill spirited and off-topic. There is a difference between criticism and baseless, off-topic insults.
