Oh man. College, huh.
It was better than living with my family, but pretty bad.
The dorm didn't have enough space for everyone going there. Students came from other cities, spent a fortune on the bus trips (what was a fortune for us at the time, anyway. More like 30 dollars right now, but that's in a time where the minimum wage was what would be 150 dollars now- and a lot of people received less than that. Do note that the dollar has been raising related to the Real lately, so the situation wasn't that bad. Still pretty bad, though.), studied like hell to enter the only college in any nearby city and couldn't actually go because they didn't have any place to live in the city.
I was one of those students from somewhere else who couldn't get in the dorm. Fortunately, students there were pretty understanding. Regardless of space, they let everyone in and we slept on the ground or on airbeds (not sure that's quite the word. It's the tl google gives me for "colchão", so /shrug). My college life was marked by strikes from professors and sometimes students over poor work/dorm conditions in that cramped space with no privacy.
Other than that, it was pretty fun. I'm an extrovert, getting friendly with new people wasn't too hard as long as we didn't go into politics or philosophy (topics I thankfully knew to avoid).
