  1. Can't remember which one it was but there's one SCP where the actual SCP itself is kind of mundane, something to do with mirrors I think, but then all of the sudden in the related files there's like this huge travelogue story about this world on the other side of a mirror or something like that. Too lazy to look it up right now but it was pretty good writing and it had me on the edge of my seat. Also the stairwell was a pretty good one. One of the problems I have with SCP is the huge gaps in quality between a lot of them. I tend to only read the ones that have been upvoted a ton because there's some really dumb junk in there. Some people seem to think that as long as they make it grimdark enough somehow fear will magically pop out, and it just doesn't happen. My least favorite one is the little girl they have to [redacted] over and over forever or the world will end or something. It's a thinly-veiled attempt to use child rape for its grimdark shock value to get upvotes. And it's a popular enough one to get referenced in SCP stories and other things on the site. It's seriously idiotic.
  2. I really like yakisoba if I can get it on a day when it won't give me heartburn. It's best fresh with lots of sauce. Other than that I freaking love gyuudon and whenever I can make the trip I head up to a Sukiya near a bookstore I like and get cheese gyuudon with a salad. When I lived in Kyoto I ate this just about every night since it's only like $3-4 and comes with lots of meat, rice, cheese plus the salad and miso soup on the side. A good meal for a broke exchange student, though I can afford to live a bit nicer now days.
  3. P-people who didn't like Haruka's route just didn't like the story right? It wasn't about the translation right? The translation was fine right? Right?
  4. Next genre: MMORGP Next game :World of Warcraft Please post when you have completed all achievements. Deadline is 10 years from now.
  5. Flowers is really starting to grow on me (badumtish). But seriously, I was getting a little frustrated with how the main character was in the first few hours, but now that I've gotten to know all the characters I'm really starting to enjoy reading this. I just wish the character models were a little more... something. There's just something lacking in them that makes me want to turn the sprites off and just read the text sometimes.
  6. Sakura Spirit and Sakura Angel on Steam. Also a lot of the really old translated hentai games were pretty crappy. http://www.somethingawful.com/hentai-game-reviews/ This guy reviews a lot of the older ones. Pick a name and go to town.
  7. I sadly don't have much time for reading outside of the reading I already do, and I try to only read in Japanese when I can. However I think this is a great idea, especially with how many amazing classics are available in the public domain. I heartily recommend the following, which can be found easily either on Wikisource or Project Gutenberg: Flatland The Pilgrim's Progress Alice in Wonderland/Through the Looking Glass The Wizard of Oz Down and Out in Paris and London There are tons and tons of others but I don't want to drown you in book names so I picked some of my favorites that aren't crazy long. Oh and almost everything by H. P. Lovecraft is available so please make sure to read some of his stories, maybe around Halloween.
  8. Confession: I think the worst possible state to be in is sick but not sick enough to take time off of work or use it to get out of anything.
  9. Where in the World is Carmen Sandiego
  10. Watch Fargo. Or The Wire. Fargo is a newer, short series that is just absolutely amazing and bizarre. The Wire is one of the best American dramas ever made.
  11. Also this: http://www.amazon.com/Body-Trauma-Writers-Wounds-Injuries/dp/1933016418/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1433233436&sr=8-1&keywords=a+writer%27s+guide+to+wounds 'Body Trauma: A Writer's Guide to Wounds and Injuries' It's really a must-read for anyone who ever intends to injure any character in any novel they write. It dispels a lot of Hollywood action movie myths and gives any writer the tools they need to write realistic fights and grisly maulings. It gives lots of good examples and covers a very wide range of topics. It's kind of a lesser-known title, which is a crime and a sin because it's so darn helpful. Oh and Strunk and White's Elements of Style is also a must-read, it helps solidify grammar so you can be confident that you're not making any obvious errors. Also read this: https://www.sfwa.org/2009/06/turkey-city-lexicon-a-primer-for-sf-workshops/ and try to not do any of the silly things on the list. (it's a list of common mistakes made by SF writers but it applies to most types of novels)
  12. I just realized Chiaki is sort of a tsundere. I was wondering what set me off about him and couldn't quite put my finger on it until now.
  13. Solidbatman has deserted us! We have incurred his wrath by worshiping after strange (Poke-) gods! Let us pray that he will return soon and guide us in the ways of video game enjoyment for this month as well. Seriously though, hate to repeat myself, but I think we should count Moemon as just a separate forum-wide thing that's going on and still come up with games to play for the club for June.
  14. Same reason as Cardcaptor Sakura, everyone's a lolicon and they love the main girl The reason I think AiW made such a big impact was because it was the first example of something like a Disney movie. It was something ostensibly aimed at children, simple and easy to enjoy with a lot of nonsense and mockery of things kids would find stupid about their daily lives (lessons, manners, respecting adults etc) but with absolute tons of hidden meanings and symbolism and satire put into it. Everyone who reads it can see it from a different angle. Kids get the silly nonsense adventure, math nerds can bask in Carroll's impressive mathematical knowledge that seeps into the story, historians can laugh at all the super un-subtle mockery Carroll was making of parts of the English government and academia. So just like Walt Disney wowed the world by making animated features that every single member of the family (except the super jaded ones) could enjoy, Lewis Carroll did the same, only when he did it it was a very new and original thing to make something so universally entertaining and smart. Too bad his other big novel duo, Sylvie and Bruno/Sylvie and Bruno Concluded, never got the same attention as Alice. To be fair, Sylvie and Bruno is nowhere near as good or universally enjoyable as Alice, but it definitely has a huge amount of charm. I heartily recommend it for anyone who loves Alice and wants more good Carroll stuff.
  15. The Grapes of Wrath Also get yourself an H. P. Lovecraft omnibus. Not every single story by him is golden but a lot of them are.
  16. I just realized Violinist of Hameln would have fit into this category. Darnit. This probably would have been my only chance to submit that show (still probably would have lost). First two eps of Nodame down. Not... totally in love with any of the characters yet. It kind of reminds me of Barakamon (like... a lot) minus the cute loli to steal the show. Still the comedy is spot-on and had me laughing out loud and the classical music, especially the piano stuff, is heavenly.
  17. Are we doing game club games this month? The Moemon Nuzlocke thing is going but I think it would be fine to start up something else for the club.
  18. Please add Flowers and Hakuisei Renai Shoukougun to the VNs list. Both are great recent yuri VNs everyone should try if they can get through the Japanese.
  19. Speedy recovery, friend!
  20. Metroid 2 was interesting because it was legit all about hunting Metroids. Through the whole game you have a counter of how many Metroids are left on the planet, and the battles with the different evolved forms of Metroids are genuinely terrifying because they move fast and hit hard. Sadly without a map the game is insanely frustrating and confusing. Mandatory paths are hidden in walls that look solid, and a lot of the exploration in the game boils down to becoming the sticky/spider ball and rolling around the walls of every map looking for invisible paths.
  21. I'll watch this while I play Moemon.
  22. Well someone went and started a separate thread for the Moemon+Nuzlocke thing so I think we can still do something different as the video game club. I still stand by my Action RPG/Adventure game suggestion.
  23. But... but I... Well actually I haven`t played it since my age was in the single digits and I was playing it on an actual original Gameboy so... I might just be seeing it through nostalgia glasses. Maybe I should try it out again and see if it`s aged as well as I believe it has.
  24. Japanese radio stations are awesome. The shopping street I work on usually has a local station blasting out all day during working hours, and today randomly the radio station is doing an orchestral Final Fantasy tribute. It`s indescribably amazing to be listening to Final Fantasy tunes on a local radio station. They also randomly play anime songs sometimes since over here anime songs are just another genre of music.
  25. The left side shows you that there are no choices to be made during the After Story chapters. Apparently you just pick the girl and it's a straight shot to her end with no choices. On the right side are what I assume are a bunch of bonus scenarios. The stars/boxes are scenario names and the things with nothing next to them are the choices you have to make, apparently most of the scenarios only have one choice.
