We've had two technical issue reports on Starry Sky in the last few days, and I thought I'd consolidate my responses here (as well as direct future issues/responses of a technical nature to this location). I am by no means a Starry Sky expert (in technicalities or gameplay -- I don't play otome games), but I did a lot of testing for the torrents and have some useful experience. Installation Guide Some Notes about the Patch (Taken from this thread). An Alternate Path Unfortunately, that's the extent of what I can offer the community for this game. The unique circumstances of the patch (see points 1/2 in the above section) make it difficult for me to suggest anything more. If you've tried the above steps and didn't have any success, I suggest obtaining the game/patch from this site and following their installation protocols.

Well, first things first: First: the translation of Starry Sky was done by a mysterious group and is notoriously buggy. Second: the English patch was hosted on the now-dead site megaupload. The only extant copies are those circulated around the community like those Aaeru provides. Third: The patch has limited success. It works for some people, and not for others. The details I provided above worked for me. I've done all the research my time allows, and I haven't come up with anything more than that. It works on my computers, and that's really the end of what I can do to troubleshoot your issue. An alternate method of installation/acquisition can be found here: http://sasugasugoi.b...stallation.html . : ( I'm sorry if it still doesn't work for you! I don't play Otome games, so if something comes up down the road, post on the forum and hopefully somebody who's played the games will have an answer. EDIT: Oops, I'm getting my posts confused. When I refer to previously offered advice, it can be found here. I forgot there've been two threads of Starry Sky troubles posted in the 'Introduce Yourself' board.

Thanks for your patience! I just tried reinstalling on a few different machines and had no problems. Let me detail what I did (this process worked for all the machines I tried), BUT BEFORE YOU FOLLOW THESE STEPS, UNINSTALL YOUR PREVIOUS ATTEMPT VIA CONTROL PANEL AND RESTART YOUR COMPUTER! Installation Guide 1. Keep your region non-unicode settings on English (United States) [if you're in the US, of course]. If you need a guide for changing these settings, see Step 0 in this guide, but reverse it to English. 2. Run the file "[Fuwanovel] Starry Sky ~in spring~.exe" which came with the torrent to unpack the key files 3. Inside the "1) Install Starry Sky" folder run the file "setup.exe" (you can change the installation directory, it doesn't matter) 4. Inside the "2) Then apply this English Patch v1.0 Full" folder run the file called "Starry Sky ~In Spring~ English Patch v1.0.exe" --SEE NEXT STEP-- 5. During the patch installation (the installation started in step 4), on the third page it asks you to point the installer to the game directory. Don't point it to the directory you entered into the Japanese game installer, instead navigate to that directory on your hard drive and keep clicking through the Starry Sky folders until you get to the directory with the actual game (look for "starrysky_spring.exe"). THAT'S the directory you want to use. Click on the Win 7 file path up at the top of your window, copy it, and then paste that file path into the English patcher. And there you have it! Let me know if that doesn't work for you, and we'll try and figure it out.

(PS: Totally looking forward to Persona 4 Golden! Never played it before and only recently finished Persona 3 Portable. Amazing games!)

Howdy! I did a ton of testing on that one, so hopefully I can help. Can you tell me more about your system? Window xp, vista, 7? Mac? Linux? Installing on main hard drive or on external/secondary? Which installers have you run? Have you previously installed Starry Sky? Any info you can provide will help! I'm generally around the forums several times a day, but Sundays are crazy busy for me. If you don't hear back from me in an hour or two after responding, send me a PM (I'll get an email and will write you back if I can). : ) Tay

(I've been waiting for a more-qualified response to this, but since people are out enjoying the weekend and not answering, I'll put out one or two thoughts) I haven't seen much of the anime, so I can't comment on the VN/Anime correlation, but as a VN I'm finding Clannad to be very rewarding. If you enjoy slice of life, then Clannad is fantastic. I've found the humor to be top-notch and very memorable. Characterization is surprisingly good as you go along (with the "fuzziness" of Nagisa at the start I wasn't sure what was coming my way. Happily, within the first hour of playing my fears were assuaged), and the cast of characters offers something for everyone. In my experience, I'm finding that Clannad's an easy recommendation to make to anyone.

I still haven't played that one! I bought it from mangagamer two months ago, but its third on my list. Are the characters good? Good plot?

Welcome! Checked out your reviews-- of those you rated highly, could you choose a favorite?

Welcome! Playing Clannad right now. It's great! Playing anything right now? -
I went to the neighboring town to pick up a dollhouse for my wife (restoring them is her hobby of choice), and I couldn't stop thinking about Schadenfreude and harry_kinomoto's comment exchange. I'm going to do my best to translate all of my thoughts into this post. I respect all of the opinions I will be quoting, and while I disagree with many of them, it's my intention to be respectful and consider all opinions on equal footing. If my words lead to sound condescending in any way, it's a failure of the writing and not purposefully done. Note: I'm not going to tie the following thoughts back to the VN realm because both harry and Schadenfreude did so in their posts. Harry rejected this idea, and as I was driving an important point came to mind: the ultimate rejection of this idea came from Houzuki himself who realized it as a self-deception. The coolest moment of the FD was when he went off after the woman he loved. That's an awesome and powerful lesson. Sex is complex because it comes in so many shades and in so many different contexts. That said, Schadenfreude is correct in saying that sex does not equal love. [Continuing from my previous comments] With that said, I reject the idea that sex and love are apples and oranges ("sex is not greater or lesser than love"). Real love can amplified by sex, can be strengthened by it, and can be expressed by it, but sex without love is nothing but instinct. In my experience and opinion, the two are very much connected, but true love always weighs out to be the ultimate of all human experience, without peer. I agree that dating is a way to "size up" a potential partner against one's long-term future, but I'd argue that the super-majority of people going on dates are dating to "fall in love," and that sex is a product of that love. Obviously, that's not always the case, but in my mind the "modern people" conjured up in that passage are a construct of popular entertainment and, ultimately, myth. (Sorry, can't help it) Such an ugly term.

Oh, yes, please. You can even add, "I'm Tay, and I support this message." to the end of it

Aaeru, I think this post should be put on the FAQ page. It's really direct, well written, and not fully elaborated on in the site content. Well done.
-
Yeah, I think so, too. That's why I started out calling them "obligate." It's interesting, tho, to see some other viewpoints. The fact that there has been so many responses shows that this is a big part of the Visual Novel experience.
-
(couldn't help myself.) Lol, you're awesome. +10 Points to Gryffindor
-
Ah, da. I agree with that. I think we're in the minority when it comes to how most VNers feel, tho.
-
Hm, interesting. This isn't the first time I've heard this, actually. What do you have in mind when you say "story structure"?
-
Wow, small world! I found your blog through google a while back, and look--here you are. : )
-
Welcome : ). I'm still limited to English-translated VNs for now (working through the Kanji, etc.) but I'm interested to watch your blog. Sounds like it could be cool. Have a favorite VN?
