I didn't mean there should be caps, but that this showcases some of the absurdity of some justice systems. The mantra here is that justice seeks to evaluate the financial "worth" of a wrongdoing made against a victim and use that as compensation. It should already be perfectly obvious that there are lots of things on which you can't possibly put a financial value and thus that the very principle is stupid. For example, in this case, they explain that they calculated about half of the compensation by estimating how much could Hogan have made if he had sold the tape by himself. That's utterly retarded and borderline insulting for the victim.

I definitely don't agree with the reduction of Gamergate to "modern youths morals"; Gamergate is a reactionary movement sharing ideologies close to extreme-right, it's not a very "youth" thing: you could find similar reactionary movement full of old people. You can't really reduce it to immaturity either. Similarly to other groups of that kind they're well organized, use recurrent tactics (for their harassment campaigns), have a strategy of saturating the public space with their misinformation to force their ideologies to weight into any debate regarding video games and the vg community (making it impossible to have a reasonable discussion on those topics). It's a real, huge thorn in the foot of the video game community which, in my opinion, has become irreducible to a simple trend among youths who need to mature.

I have to join Nosebleed on the fact that a lot of yuri is produced by females, and for females. In fact, yuri produced by men for men is, as far as I know, a fairly recent thing. While yuri 4koma like Sakura Trick and """yuri subtext""" series are def yuri by men for men, historically yuri is a women thing. Yuri started out in shoujo magazines and were written by women (and still exist there, think about stuff like Aoi Hana). In the 70s and 80s it was part of the exploration of forbidden romantic relationships (along with BL, incest etc) by mostly female mangaka, which was part of a larger movement of feminism and sexual emancipation in Japan. It is one of the most interesting periods in the history of manga, and a lot of renowned mangaka were part of that culture. Manga at that period in time was a place allowing for expression for those women mangaka. Yuri is not a very huge sub-category of the culture of that historical period but that's pretty much its origin still. Later in the 90s, it was a josei magazine, Misuto, that started publishing pornographic yuri (contrary to BL, yuri in the 70s/80s wasn't very explicit). And one of the (many) reasons why Utena is one of the best anime that has ever been made is that it directly draws influences from all that 70s/80s shoujo manga culture and interrogates it, its social role, etc. The reason why yuri manga emerged that way is that if you go back further in history, you find its foundation in S-kei literature. And that answers @Fred the Barber's interrogations about MariMite: MariMite is a pure homage to S-kei literature and depicts what kind of novels those were. Much the same way, S-kei literature was done by women for women, and had ties with feminist and sexual emancipation movements: the most famous S-kei author, Nobuko Yoshiya, was a lesbian and a feminist. I don't know where yurirei belongs in all of this, because 'modern' (post-2000 I guess) manga tends to blur influences and historical considerations while dividing audiences into niches of niches of niches that make things much more complicated to understand - in a typical post-modern fashion, if I am to believe what little I know of post-modernism.

Oh. Well if you're talking about some specific individuals then it's nothing but casual psychologizing, which doesn't have a whole lot of interest. Presuming you can, indeed, determine what is someone's intention is, in my opinion, the naive viewpoint here. Especially if you try to assign a single intention to a single action. Alas human beings are not billiard balls.

That's a kinda sad/cynical individualistic vision of life. Social factors don't reduce to attention seeking, you can be motivated by a desire for social bonding which is centered more on the relation than on yourself, or by a desire to spread knowledge, etc. Altruism (which is only social in a broad definition since it's biologically engineered in numerous species like ours) and boredom seem like other plausible options.

I tell myself I'll just marathon the shit out of it, fail to, read half of it by 20 minutes chunk while procrastinating on the internet, then I finally get in a groove and finish it pretty quickly. I'm seriously considering cutting my internet connection in order to be able to focus but I'd probably still find something else to do instead. Discussing war and who could win what is hardly different from an anime powerlevel discussion in the end, and the parties involved share a few basic, unchallenged premises that make it unlikely for the topic to burn down. If the discussion started bearing on something more cleaving - and anarchism involves challenging some basic premises - I can totally see it spiral out of control. Not that it wouldn't be interesting!

Ryoji. I believe he immediately closed a thread about politics, much to the opposition of some mods back then, including me (I didn't really see why we wouldn't be able to talk about politics. I don't think he left the forums because of that though (he had health issues), but I might have missed a behind-closed-doors episode that batman knows about. Nowadays I'd be much more careful when it comes to discussing politics though. My policy is simply to not talk about politics with people with whom I know I will strongly disagree with and end up in a time and energy-consuming debate that might end up with both of us not talking with each others for months. Hence why I'll probably never discuss politics with you or batman, for example

I'm automatically suspicious of anyone who describes himself as a realist. It's more than often a way to hide one's own ideologies and pass them as indisputable truths =p As far as my following of the news goes it does seem like Obama calmed down on interventionism a fair bit but stuff like the drones killings, snowden leaks, blind bombings etc don't lead me to believe things are that different in the end. I'll admit my lack of knowledge on the topic though.
