  1. What game is that? I see a vampire loli. My favorite type of loli.
  2. The success of Sakura Spirits is frustrating because it's popular due to viral marketing. Viral marketing subverts the marketplace by flipping our notions of what makes a game worth noticing and playing upside down. Sakura Spirits was successful *because* it's bad and *because* it confirms the stereotype of VNs as silly harem comedies for weaboo losers. Others unfamiliar with this stereotype see the attention Sakura Spirits is getting and assume it's among the best the genre has to offer (because why else would it be getting so much attention). Thus the stereotype continues to self-proliferate, as stereotypes are wont to do.
  3. I kind of want to see a Rooke writing review of a Sakura series game. I think that would be more entertaining than the game itself.
  4. Another question: Is that a hard and fast rule? I might want to post about...you know...visual novels at some point. Accuracy is also something I typically don't guarantee.
  5. Congratulations, you helped me discover a new feature.
  6. To create a blog, or not to create a blog, that is the question...

  7. Thanks. I might give this a shot. The Swedish buttons could be problematic, but I'll figure something out. Posting on the old Visual Novel Aer was kind of a pain, and I'm hoping this will be a bit more intuitive. I spent half my time on those posts wrestling with formatting.
  8. So I was thinking of giving this a try, but I didn't want to create a ghost blog just to fiddle with features and decide if I wanted to actually commit. Would I be able to blog a particular post just by clicking a button on the post? Most of my content would probably end up being an echo of (what I consider to be) my most important posts, so making this effortless would be important to me.
  9. It's possible to become compliant. Mangagamer could host the demos and HCG on a different site, for example. At this point, Mangagamer doesn't consider it worth the hassle of redesigning their entire site.
  10. Mangagamer has discussed Paypal payment in the past. Currently they're not compliant with Paypal's standards, therefore Paypal refuses to deal with them. To become fully compliant, Mangagamer would have to remove all free adult content from its shop, including demos and sample HCG. Mangagamer doesn't want to do that, therefore no Paypal. This is kind of the issue with a small company holding a monopoly on distribution. It limits options, limits exposure, and forces the company to throw resources at a distribution system that might be better spent somewhere else...like marketing. Even with the success of Steam, Mangagamer still hasn't solved the basic problem of offering solid distribution for their titles at launch that everyone can be happy with.
  11. Suppose 10% of people who play a game actually buy it. Suppose 10% of pirates would buy the game if they couldn't pirate it. Converting those "choose not to pay" pirates to customers would double sales. A significant minority can still be a powerful force in a niche market like this.
  12. I could save hundreds of dollars a year if I just pirated all my software. Doing so wouldn't put a dent in companies' profits. Now apply the categorical imperative. Everyone pirates all software. Software development crashes and burns. The only way to fund software development is crowdfunding. These systems of morals we have exist for a reason. Why am I so special that I'm allowed to sidestep the rules that everyone else has to play by?
  13. Mangagamer has affirmed that this statement is their official response, carefully considered, reviewed by multiple staff and posted by the head honcho to deliver a message. Oh dear.
  14. I just might be considering an "episode" featuring a playthrough of Cross Days, a little known sequel of School Days. It's a sad tale of otaku rage and betrayed expectations.
  15. Isn't this the guy you were recommending I should study under? You have a very morbid sense of humor, my friend.
  16. I disagree. I think a significant proportion of pirates have money but spend it opportunistically. These are the targets of DRM. If they can't get it free and can't get it now, they'll buy. Otherwise, they'll save their money for the next PS Vita game they want. These people aren't very vocal about their inclinations because they don't give a damn about moral codes or such and have no interest in defending their actions. They pirate because they can and it's easy.
  17. What I find amusing is that Tay is talking about running a fan site largely celebrating porn games at what is most likely his place of employment (possibly a hospital or other medical institution). I applaud you, good sir.
  18. I meant "agent" as in "operative" or "spy". The dissertation is about half finished. I'm a reluctant writer. I rarely commit to anything. I wouldn't have predicted committing to this even days before I did. I'm not sure how the protagonist will develop. Like I said, she seemed deranged to me. A psychopath. I do cancer research. I study epigenetics.
  19. Here's some uninformed speculation on MajiKoi: Fan translation team announces MajiKoi patch is nearly finished. JAST shows interest in licensing the game and contacts the fan group. JAST contacts license holders. License holders demand licensing fees that JAST is unwilling to pay, or have unfeasible expectations that presuppose huge success on Steam. Fan group releases patch because negotiations failed or are dragging out.
  20. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Allies_of_World_War_II I expect the dissertation will be around 110 pages of incredibly dense technical writing, which takes like 10x as long to write as "normal" writing. I imagine a story I'd want to read, and I write it. I tend to finalize each sentence and paragraph before moving to the next. I read and reread and reread what I've written as I go, making small changes. My guess is there's going to be an ongoing conflict between the protagonist and antagonist, which will likely have elements of romance intertwined. I could see the two foes having some sort of final confrontation that ends the story, or perhaps uniting against a common foe.
  21. Dismissing an attempt at constructive criticism and chiding the person who gives it for not paying enough attention, rather than reflecting on how the information is presented... Good luck finding a willing and capable collaborator, I guess.
