  1. On other forums I've seen other spellings such as Aeru. It appears to be a difficult name for English speakers to grasp. I suggest using Mary Sue instead.

  12. Language is complicated and doesn't follow hard-and-fast rules. Other than grammar, it's pattern-based (certain phrases are commonly used, while certain novel combinations are considered awkward), not rule-based. I can't recall seeing "とても" used in combination with a negative. Since I can barely string a sentence together in Japanese, it's quite possible I'm right, wrong, or somewhere inbetween. あまり: http://www.csse.monash.edu.au/~jwb/cgi-bin/wwwjdic.cgi?1F If I recall correctly, "あまり" ranks as a 3 in the scale I posted before, whereas "全然" would rank as a 1. 何だ?違うか?女だろう?確かに女の顔を見いている、俺は。まあ、”貴様”を使って構わないけど。w

  15. I hate fluff. If a game has too much of it, I'll drop it. I agree that tight storytelling is important. Every scene should serve a purpose. This is why I can't stand most moege and moe anime. Many of my favorite anime are 12-26 episodes, as the short series tend to have tighter writing.

  19. My stance is similar to, but probably less hardline than that. I regard piracy as freeloading rather than stealing. Sometimes freeloading might be appropriate (some people really, actually, truly don't have the means). I also don't see an obligation to support Japanese-language works. I agree that the categorical imperative is an appropriate guideline. If everyone freeloads, then these games can't be made. If you're among that number, then you better have a good reason why you're so special that you deserve not to contribute. If you can't be bothered to buy a single VN after playing scores of them, can you really call yourself a VN fan? Want to try before you buy? Fine--as long as you actually buy and aren't using this as an excuse. The worst type of pirate is the opportunist: the person who buys what he must and pirates the rest, the person who buys console games because they're too much trouble to pirate but comes up with a litany of excuses to play VNs without buying them. These people are the reason DRM exists, and that really ticks me off.

  21. Time to resurrect this topic. Open beta runs 8/17-8/19. I suspect most people will keep their characters from the open beta. Therefore it's server decision time. Reportedly, server transfers won't open up until 2-3 weeks after release, and they'll cost money. If you guys want to play on the same server, we'll have to make sure it's arranged in advance. I have at least 3 other people I'll be dragging to the same server as me. As far as guilds go, I personally can't make any guarantees. I'm a hardcore MMO player and I've been known to guild hop as necessary to progress in endgame content.
  22. Depends on the game. Sengoku Rance has plenty of unavoidable H-scenes. Kamidori Alchemy Meister has H-scenes with sub-heroines that you're required to see in order to progress into the various heroine routes (else you get the default route). In general, ero-heavy titles are likely to have mandatory H-scenes with non-heroine characters. Brave Soul is one of those few games that you can play to the end without seeing a single scene. I had a roommate that finished Brave Soul and didn't even realize the game HAD H-scenes.

  24. I have to say I'm impressed: I honestly didn't expect them to release a demo in time to actually promote the game prior to release. If there's demand, I may play through the demo and write up a first impression. I could possibly even make a gameplay trailer. Website updates include the demo, an image gallery, a prominently displayed official OP (sadly without subtitles), the PDF manual (which discusses the gameplay mechanics), and system requirements. The layout is also completely redesigned: visually it's very appealing. The system section is still in construction, but if they put the same level of effort into it my concerns should be addressed.
  25. Trouble in Japan spells opportunity for the English market. Recent financial forecasts predict that the US economy will continue to grow in the short-term in the midst of an overall sluggish world economy. This increases the chances that VN developers will seek to expand overseas to remain profitable. If the Japanese market were healthy, there'd be little reason to look at overseas markets which have proven very difficult to capitalize. This increases opportunities for licenses. Note the surge in licenses from new developers since 2008; at one point the only companies localizing their games were Will and Crowd. Only time will tell if such licenses turn enough profit to sustain developer interest and maintain the pace of localization.
