  1. That's an argument for effective and widely-used rating schemes, not an argument against the translations existing. For any given type of content, there's going to be a spectrum from good to bad. Yet we don't say bad content shouldn't exist or should never have been produced. We don't harass the the creators of such content. We deal with the spectrum of content quality using objective and subjective ratings which allows us to highlight the most deserving content. I can look up anime fansubbing groups and see aggregated opinions of their translations. Why can't I do the same for VNs?
  2. Skylake is cool. I can't wait for wireless peripherals that don't need batteries. I hate batteries. I'm trying to decide which I want more: a wireless mouse without batteries, or one I can put in the dishwasher.
  3. There's online tests available to see if you have Narcissistic tendencies. I took it because I was curious, but oddly enough, I don't. http://psychcentral.com/quizzes/narcissistic.htm
  4. Now's a bad time to buy. Wait for Skylake. It'll be out before Christmas, along with Windows 10 and the next generation of SSDs.
  5. You can't pick a motherboard without knowing what processor you want.
  6. It's not narcissism if you really are better than them. Maybe it's time to find a different circle of friends. Sounds like she came running back to you as soon as you had something she wanted. She sounds like the worst kind of parasite. I can only judge from what you've told us, but I would end this relationship ASAP. Confront her again, and if she starts avoiding you again, it's time to move on. You're just being used. The general impression I get from your post is that people are nice to you because you're useful to them. Friendship is a 2-way street. If you're doing all the giving, and you're not getting back anything in return, you're getting the short end of the stick. Prune these parasitic relationships and replace them with relationships of mutual respect.
  7. Am I the only one who thinks that the Shoutbox should be the place for chit-chat and spam, not the forums? As I see it, the forums should be for discussions that have general relevance to the thousands of lurkers who visit every day and never post anything; this is content that should be logged and indexed for eternity (or until the next Apocalypse). The shoutbox should be for fun and games, getting to know people, and generally just passing time--discussions that no one will care about a few weeks or even a few years from now. That's why I think that the shoutbox is important, even if I don't necessarily have much use for it myself. If it forestalls the creation of a couple spam threads a day, it'll have served its purpose.
  8. That's a feature, not a bug. Recognition of phrases tends to be more accurate (and useful) than simply telling you what the individual word means. For example, telling you the word-by-word meaning of an idiom without the overall meaning is useless.
  9. Being that the silent majority leave no feedback at all, that is how it usually ends up. With the apathy of the masses, and the criticism of the community, it's not a very motivating environment to "work" in.
  10. I didn't realize there was some degree of spam protection that can be implemented with the current scheme. We'll see if it manages to keep the bots out.
  11. Just keep in mind you can't farm likes if you post as a guest.
  12. Then make it off by default and it has to be manually enabled. Server problem solved, because only regulars will use it!
  13. Getting rid of Today's Birthdays would free up plenty of space. Actually, there's already plenty of space below the Coliseum of Chatter on the index page.

  15. You were still using the initial version I set you up with... that's lol.
  16. I think this is a good idea, and could actually help cut down on forum spam. Who knows, the Coliseum of Chatter might suddenly become a barren wasteland after this. Whether you like chatter or don't like spam, I see no reason not to support this.
  17. I suggested once that the folks at Mangagamer move to China to make their paycheck go a little further. My advice wasn't received very warmly. http://forums.fuwanovel.net/index.php?/topic/10399-the-horror-of-working-in-the-anime-industry/?p=290799

  19. 0.4.9 has been around for years. I recently had to upgrade from 0.4.8 to fix a clipboard bug that would crash it whenever the application saw a website url. But even 0.4.8 worked fine in Windows 7 x64, and that's been around for maybe 3 years now.
  20. Argument need not be just for the sake of decision making. Through argument we come to better understand our own ideas. The point of an argument isn't necessarily to "win" and either convince or discredit your opponent; in many cases arguments are how you come to understand other viewpoints. Argument is a quest for truth, and if you don't ever change your mind, you're doing it wrong.
  21. The truth shall set you free. I rarely encounter situations where I believe muzzling myself serves the greater good. Only through discourse can we forge and temper our ideas and ourselves. Harmony is stagnation and complacency. Only through competition will the best ideas reign supreme.
  22. The functionality of the community blogs is somewhat restricted. One of the main issues I have is that currently users have to register on the Fuwanovel forums to post comments. This is not how blogs typically work, and unfortunately this tends to inhibit feedback and lessen reader engagement. I want the community blogs to be open to public, anonymous commenters without registration. As others have pointed out, allowing unregistered users to post comments could create a spam issue which IPB is not equipped to handle. But Wordpress is. IPB isn't really designed for blogging; Wordpress is a more powerful tool that's designed specifically for this task. The one advantage of the current community blog feature is how easy it is to use, especially since it works basically the same way the forums do. Wordpress formatting is a headache, so I could see why some people would be reluctant to migrate for that reason alone.
  23. That's one implementation I could imagine. I suppose they could also coexist, if there were demand for it / reason to do so.
  24. Well, I see people all the time asking for English patches for untranslated games, but how to text hook Japanese games that have actually been officially translated? That's a new one.
  25. I've been a big proponent for the community blog project, and one of its major users. I've also provided a great deal of feedback on the project over the past few weeks. I think the project has been successful, and holds a great deal of promise. But I think we're beginning to reach the limit of what can be simply retrofitted onto the existing framework. To improve this feature, more resources will have to be devoted, and the scope of the project itself will have to be reassessed. This is something that can't happen without the enthusiastic support of the Fuwanovel community. I present a poll to assess whether you all think this feature should be expanded. I imagine a centralized area, similar to the old FuwaReviews, where Fuwanovel users can freely post blog content with minimal or no oversight (basically unedited and unmoderated, similar to how the feature currently works). The look and feel of it would resemble Fuwazette, with the difference being that this would be a community blogging area where bloggers would be responsible for their own content (no oversight from Zakamutt or anyone else). The reason I think this will work where FuwaReviews community submissions failed is that there's no onus on anyone in particular to impose quality standards. Bloggers will be responsible for their own content, and they'll sink or swim on the merits of their content and charisma. One of the major advantages of this solution over the current framework would be use of Wordpress to spam-filter comments from users who aren't registered on the Fuwanovel forums, making these "true" blogs. To impose as little a bandwidth strain / server cost on Fuwanovel as possible, this area might be ad-supported, and/or the features would be more restricted compared to Fuwazette (i.e., you can't host images on Fuwanovel, you can only link from sites like imgur). Please fill out the poll and post your feedback on whether you would support such an expansion of the Community Blog feature.
