Kaguya Posted December 6, 2014 Posted December 6, 2014 Alright. The VN we will be reading this month is Forest! Discussion starts in the 9, final thoughts start in the 21th. Have fun, everyone~ Quote
Down Posted December 6, 2014 Posted December 6, 2014 Kinda waiting for the discussion I guess..? I would definitely need to re-read this to get a better understanding of it but I'd rather wait to be able to read it in japanese... In any case this VN is awesome but difficult to get into (I had fumes coming out of my brain during Shinjuku Drifters but really started thoroughly enjoying it from The Game on), so be aware of what you're about to read! Zakamutt Posted December 6, 2014 Posted December 6, 2014 Are there any like, classics it references that I should get a vague idea of before I start? I heard it had lots of that. Quote
Down Posted December 6, 2014 Posted December 6, 2014 Are there any like, classics it references that I should get a vague idea of before I start? I heard it had lots of that. Hm. I'm not sure if it really helps comprehension to know those classics, unless you really know them well. Not sure as I don't myself. That said, you never really get spoonfed what the references come from so to be a little less lost it would probably be good to at least be aware of what are Lewis Carroll's works (especially Alice of course but also Jabberwocky), LotR (should be okay lol), Winnie the Pooh (for realz, and believe me you'll be creeped out), Watership Down, Narnia, Peter Pan, Treasure Island... mostly british litterature but not only. I'm really not sure necessary though. I also believe Ixrec included a number of translation notes with his patch. Quote
Kosakyun Posted December 6, 2014 Posted December 6, 2014 There is a second scene. It's near the end of the true route when Suzu has been captured by the Dominion; the day before the gang sets out to rescue her. Yes, Soushichi cheats on Suzu in this scene while her life is at risk because FUCK YEAH h-scene. It's terribly written, completely ignoring the protag's established personality and morals. There are no consequences whether you choose to go through with it or not. It's a perfect example of how an h-scene that is only there for the sake of having a sex scene with each heroine can negatively affect your overall experience. What the fuck. I got neither. Does that mean I'm very loyal to my heroine? How do I get them? The incompleteness of my gallery and scenes irritates my autism. Quote
Tawm Posted December 6, 2014 Posted December 6, 2014 What the fuck. I got neither. Does that mean I'm very loyal to my heroine? How do I get them? The incompleteness of my gallery and scenes irritates my autism. Pretty much. You only get these scenes if you always go for choices involving Sakura in the true route. Some of them are a bit vague, but any guide should get you all scenes in minimal playthroughs if you have OCD regarding galleries. Quote
Kosakyun Posted December 6, 2014 Posted December 6, 2014 So I'm missing two scenes from Sakura huh. I thought it was weird that she was the only girl in the series not having a scene. Oh well. Here comes the gallery completor, KosakiFag! Oh yeah. I'd like to refrain from using guides as much as possible. Trial # 1 starts now! Edit: Success. A lot of thanks to you, Tawm. Quote
kyrt Posted December 7, 2014 Posted December 7, 2014 You know what I'm gonna go ahead and try to do this. So we're gonna read and discuss Forest then? I haven't read this one yet so sounds good. Quote
Kurisu-Chan Posted December 7, 2014 Posted December 7, 2014 can i expect the same amount of "i don't understand anything" as in Sekien and Shikkoku? Quote
Rilarion Posted December 11, 2014 Posted December 11, 2014 I've shared most of my impressions in the first thread but, Ayakashibito is a great VN, it has realistic characters, a good story and every route is amazing Touko Route: Touko Route was really good, It really had an effect on me, the things Touko and Shuugen suffered because of their condition, Touko's diligent but shy personality.. And How Shouichi became a villain by combining with Honan was an amazing plot twist. The conflicts he had within himself before becoming the Ayakashi made it even more believable and realistic. Shuugen really was in spotlight and did his role brilliantly. Tonya Route: Cuddly mode nuff said , tonya was a really fun character to interact, like every character in the story(and RL) she had her number of inner conflicts. Despite all she managed to stand up to her worst nightmare and defeated her enemies. Her final battle had a sad conclusion though... Shouchi didn't really do anything significant in the route but wasn't too lame.. Kaoru Route: Though it was a good route it was a bit dissapointing... Shouichi trained his ass off in this route and his fight was really underwhelming. Kotarou was the one who carried the route imo. We also got to see what happened between Shouichi and Kaoru in the past. Other than that there weren't any new revelations about Kaoru in the route. But it was good to see her cute side Suzu Route: This was the best and longest route in the series. Everything we've learned in the previous routes were important in this route. Suzu's choice to become an ayakashibito made me really sad though. Sacrificing her future.. Damn.. Shouichi finally lived up to his potential in this route and had really good fights. That final battle was really breathtaking. It was a bit troubling to catch up with the text though. Quote
Kosakyun Posted December 11, 2014 Posted December 11, 2014 Suzu's choice to become an ayakashibito made me really sad though. Sacrificing her future.. Damn.. At least they'll be together in the true end. Or at least in one variant of the good ends. Quote
Rilarion Posted December 11, 2014 Posted December 11, 2014 At least they'll be together in the true end. Or at least in one variant of the good ends. If I were in her place I'd say fuck it I'll become the Kyuubi., I won't cut my tail for two people... Quote
Kosakyun Posted December 11, 2014 Posted December 11, 2014 If I were in her place I'd say fuck it I'll become the Kyuubi., I won't cut my tail for two people... That's because you've already experienced what it means to be human. Suzu, though... She doesn't want to go back to her life before meeting Soushichi. Quote

She doesn't want to go back to her life before meeting Soushichi. True that's why it made me sad and not angry.. They're together in two of the endings Quote
Kaguya Posted December 12, 2014 Author Posted December 12, 2014 Oh yes, for the people wondering, since the club is full of lazy people who haven't started reading we'll start discussion on the 16th instead Quote
kyrt Posted December 12, 2014 Posted December 12, 2014 I am happy about this delay even though I have started it. Quote
Deep Blue Posted December 12, 2014 Posted December 12, 2014 I want to join but I doubt that I'll be able to finish the novel in so few days but nonetheless I'll give it a try! Quote
Kaguya Posted December 12, 2014 Author Posted December 12, 2014 I want to join but I doubt that I'll be able to finish the novel in so few days but nonetheless I'll give it a try! No need to finish it until then, just read enough to start discussing~ Quote
Deep Blue Posted December 12, 2014 Posted December 12, 2014 No need to finish it until then, just read enough to start discussing~ I'll give it a try then ...is there any good nakige I haven't read yet? I wouldn't go for Air since I'm waiting for the other project, and I've read the Key stuff + Katawa Shoujo, ONE... Also wow, the vndb tag is kinda terrible with some of the stuff it turns up. I mean, Hoshimemo at 2.3? Does ef actually count? Crescendo, Shinikiss, Suika, and wind -a breath of heart- are apparently things as well, though I'm not sure if any of them are much good (low ratings and all). I'd certainly be interested in ef, though it's got a (now full!) commercial localization now and idk what your policy on that would be. I for one don't have the money. Same with Suika which caught my interest for whatever reason. If you feel like going into utsuge territory, I've always wanted to go for narcissu at some point but just not been into it enough to try given my options. Tomoyo after could be a thing as well. Things I would re-read? I'd go for Katawa Shoujo, always wanted to read it again. Kanon could work. LB... big maybe there. Definitely would not reread CLANNAD. Caveats aside I'm still interested. Let's see what comes up? Read Narcissu I command you!!! Seriously you should read it and is really short (maybe 2 hours long at least narcissu 1st you can skip second if you want) Quote
Kosakyun Posted December 12, 2014 Posted December 12, 2014 True that's why it made me sad and not angry.. They're together in two of the endings They're happy with that. So I believe I should be happy for them too. Quote

Nosebleed Posted December 17, 2014 Posted December 17, 2014 I hope the people who wanted to participate are reading it (albeit I haven't been reading it as much as I wanted to). Any thoughts on this visual novel so far? Are you enjoying it? How does it compare to other VNs you've read? Quote
Down Posted December 17, 2014 Posted December 17, 2014 So, how many people gave up before reaching The Game? Remember guys, Quote
kyrt Posted December 17, 2014 Posted December 17, 2014 I'm still only on chapter 3 (as soon as I'm done teaching I plan to finish it). I can say I absolutely love the feel of it and have no idea what's really going on. The music for it is also extremely atmospheric and catching. I'm also now hearing the bgm for it in everything (a lot of anime reviewers on youtube tend to use Forest bgm for their videos). I really do like the music though and it definitely is managing to maintain my interest. It has references up the wazoo and the writing style is rather unique from most visual novels I've played. I feel as if so far this is a visual novel that could be in the criterion-esque collection of visual novels. Quote
