Kaguya Posted May 10, 2013 Posted May 10, 2013 I don't really like auto- Even if two sentences have 40 characters I may spend 5 to 20 seconds reading it. My reading speed always becomes very slow in infodumping scenes, and I'm very promp to press control (or whatever is used to skip) or at least click very fast in dialogues with characters I don't like, so I'd have to disable it the whole time if I used auto. Sieg Posted May 10, 2013 Posted May 10, 2013 Oh I actually liked the system in hoshimemo as it even shows how much time is remaining before it jumps to next xD Yeah, I've seen it... Hoshimemo is so far SO good (xD), the plot, the pace, the voices and the system (as well as the art) are all above average. Looking foward to it =D Quote
Snowtsuku Posted May 11, 2013 Posted May 11, 2013 I agree. Also has your avatar changed O.o You're pretty late in noticing things eh. I'm not a fan of auto mode since I can't set the option to match how I read. Also there are parts that I wish to read longer. I use a wireless mouse so I don't have problems even if I play while resting or so. Quote
Zakamutt Posted May 11, 2013 Posted May 11, 2013 Wireless mouses are THE way to play (esp eroge for various reasons ) Quote

This ^ Literally, every time Komari pops up in the common route, this is essentially what I do. I can't stand her voice and the way she talks. She's the only character that I actually try to skip hearing the voice. To answer the question concretely, I don't use Auto at all but I haven't exactly tried it. I'm like Down in that my reading speed varies depending on context and I'd like to control it. Plus, even if I finish reading before the character actually finishes saying the lines, I still wait for them to finish speaking first. Situations where there are pauses in speaking annoys me at times cause then I have to go back and replay the audio from the beginning, which I've done COUNTLESS times in Rewrite (Even though I'm hardly proficient enough to understand most of what they're saying just by ear). solidbatman Posted May 11, 2013 Posted May 11, 2013 If you two would be so kind as to try not to derail the topic. Thank you. Back on topic, the reason behind me being against auto is that I read much faster than the spoken dialogue. Now, when I first start a VN, I typically will let the speaker finish before moving on as it helps me get a feel for the character. But once I have a good feel for the character, I fly through the dialogue. Quote

The only reason I feel like finishing the whole voice dialogue is when I really like the character. Despite not finishing the voices, I still feel more comfortable when the VN is voiced. Quote

I'm "working" I have to admit that I have been using Auto a lot less in Rewrite. I do use it when I feel pretty tired. Key games are pretty good for setting reading speeds. Quote
sanahtlig Posted May 11, 2013 Posted May 11, 2013 For those unhappy with the auto timings: Keep in mind, the games were designed for Japanese readers. It's not terribly surprising that the timings would be off when the game is translated to English, depending on whether the timing was set manually (by the staff) or automatically (by the engine in real time). I've taken a liking to auto in English games, as I get wrist and hand pain from repetitive clicking / key tapping. It obviously doesn't work at all when playing Japanese games via machine translation. The timing issues are a drag though, and can significantly reduce enjoyment if the writing isn't top notch, since a timing that makes all text comfortable to read means you have to wait on simple lines that aren't all that interesting. Dizzyworld2 Posted May 11, 2013 Posted May 11, 2013 I usually use auto when the mode but for Tsukihime, I've been just clicking though the text (mostly because I didn't think there was an auto mode). I like to read vns in chunks ranging from 30 minutes to a few hours (or marathon key games XD) so holding the mouse in my hand that long isn't favorable .__.;; Yeah, in KEY games I had the best auto mode experience. The other VNs also take in consideration the length of line though. The key function in KEY games is the minimum wait time, which I set lower, making it even more dependent on the line length. In other games there is always given minimum waiting time that cannot be changed and that's why "huh?" line seems to stay too long. But I found that if the game has the slider like "auto mode speed" then it is time per char based. I actually didn't realize key had good auto mode until now... Quote
sanahtlig Posted May 11, 2013 Posted May 11, 2013 Also, auto mode typically doesn't work if you have text display speed set to instant (which is how I set it when I don't use auto mode). Quote

Steve Posted May 11, 2013 Posted May 11, 2013 I have wireless mouse too but if I were to click for skip (or I would rather use the mouse wheel), I wouldnt be able to have both hands under my head and other comfortable positions for watching and reading xD Quote
