I`m firmly in the `why even release it` camp. Were people really clamoring for this game? Enough that a company would consider releasing it even with people threatening to quit? Sounds more like the Japanese developer saw the sales of School Days and put pressure on Sekai to put it out no matter what. That`s the only situation where I can imagine Sekai saying `We don`t care if people patch it` openly like this.

And all this is why I`m a huge all-ages fan. I wish all the VNs with stories would be released as all-ages right from the get-go so there would never be any censoring needed. If people want porn they should buy porn, and if they don`t want porn they shouldn`t be forced between paying for and supporting porn and getting good stories they want to read.

So the same company saying members of the team were going to quit if it went through uncensored is now also going to `secretly` release an un-official patch?

I will admit, yes, I am confused by this.

its no secret to those who know me that i love the days series, and i don't really like loli's, but more then that i hate censorship. and to blow it all off with basically saying "well the fans on the internet will do the parts of the work we don't want to" is just plain and simple bullshit.

He wasn't trying to say it as clearly as possible. He was trying to say it in the most evasive manner possible to preserve plausible deniability should law enforcement ever come knocking. He even ended up deleting a post where he spelled it out for all to see. I may end up retracting the quote from my blog post, but we'll see what happens.

this isnt the first time jast cut a route from one of their vn's. anyone ever read this one https://vndb.org/v148

there was a miko heroine in the japanese version but for some reason or another they cut her route out.

its weird the some people are taking a stand in their company, when theyve released stuff like this. https://vndb.org/v101where you play a teacher who rapes multiple students as well as a co-worker.

Where is this "Sekai Project is the enemy" talk coming from?  Peter said a lot of dumb things in that thread, but he definitely didn't say that.  Just because he said staff members were against an uncensored release doesn't mean that's the sole entire reason JAST decided to censor the game.

The "enemy" is law enforcement and the laws against obscenity it's enforcing.  Staff members were upset because they saw what happened to <well known staff member located in Canada> and, understandably, didn't want it to happen to them too.

My guess is that was just a convenient excuse Peter made in the heat of the moment to reflexively shield himself from blame.  JAST has a track record with censorship; don't think he was dead-set against censorship until his localization team threatened to mutiny on him.  That's just ridiculous.  Peter is a nice guy, but don't hang on his every word.  He's not Bill Clinton.

I'm waiting for Zakamutt to wake up and then maybe I can get my post up on Fuwazette.  Maybe it'll turn this conversation in a productive direction.

AFAIK, in the US there has yet to be a case on record of someone being successfully prosecuted for possessing lolicon hentai. I don't think anyone has gotten in trouble for importing it, either. Canada? That's another story.

I didn't see the post where Payne spelt it out but that should already be more than clear:

I'm obviously not able to say whether a patch will come out or not, or when, but hopefully you'll pick up on my overall tone and be reassured.

Kanna:

I'm one of the staff on Shiny Days project. Just want to clarify what Peter said, none of us on the team have any moral objections to the content for Shiny. That was just a miscommunication between us. What we do face however is a large legal obstacle.

JAST USA is.. well.. a US company, but they sell and export their games worldwide. Censoring or cutting content out of a game is never an easy decision, but we had to do it to comply with various international laws. Just because it's a grey area in the US or legal elsewhere doesn't mean we can apply this standard across the board.

Back with School Days HQ, SP hosted a survey asking people what content is illegal in their respective countries. Underaged, beastiality and rape content were the top 3 in results. While I don't agree on cutting these out, we are obliged to in order to sell to these countries.

I understand why people would be angry about this censorship and their justification of not buying the game, but at the same time I don't want to play chicken with criminal code and be put on a registered sex offenders list.

I'll hold my breath until I see if some form of patch does come out. In the end i see it's because of legal BS (Would it cost them an arm and a leg to be upfront about it though?) just like Starless, so I won't hold the decision against them as much. But I still won't support a censored product, that's just my mindset as a consumer (and someone who enjoys said content). If i see a trend in terms of patching, maybe i'll come back to these games, otherwise it's still a no for me as much I understand why they're doing what they're doing. Living in a country where this kind of censorship doesn't exist and this content is allowed and being forced to deal with censorship just kinda sucks in general for me.

I came across an amusing quote on Reddit regarding the involvement of Sekai Project in the censorship of Shiny Days.

And Saya no Uta [was released by JAST], which leads me to think [dovac caused Shiny Days to be censored]

Dovac of Sekai Project responded:

Under good information yes it is indeed my fault.

Actually it isn't but whatever floats your boat.

Of course I am. They deserve as much support as the next man. If nobody cared about loli vaginas, than the world would be much better off. Sadly, this world is not the case...

Sekai means World... ;D

I really can't stand the modern communities nowadays. Both the developers and publishers do everything they can to ensure the hapiness of all the parties, yet fans still complain. I'm perfectly fine with Jast taking this kind of approach in case of Shiny Days. As long as they will keep their promise and release the missing content afterwards, it's perfectly fine. Those who still object in this case are the downfall of humanity and I pity them as consumers, as they are the direct reason why we can't have nice things anymore.

I love Mr. Payne's exasperated response to the community's reaction.

At the very least you made me more trustful of Jast with this article, I won't say I endorse this until I see the final result, but if it is as you say then I won't have anything to complain and I'd actually prefer it if it keeps the whole thing in low profile instead.

So I guess now we play the waiting game. Good article~
