Random Thoughts: Weird pulls towards the past and future. Also: Happy Birthday, Ryoji!
AtomCrafty and 3 others reacted to Tay for a topic
Two years ago, today, I was pulling out all the stops trying to get Aaeru and Steve (the last two hold-outs!) to contribute a quote to Ryoji's Happy Birthday/Get Well card. He was pretty sick at the time, and we were all worried about him. Aaeru wasn't really good at that sort of thing, and Steve was still enjoying the thrill of being obnoxious ( ) (< 3 steve), and I pretty much had to ruthlessly guilt-trip them into oblivion to make it happen. I still remember sitting in my grandparents' kitchen thinking about how time was running out: it was 11:00 PM my time (10P Ryoji's time) and the card still hadn't come together. I was madly hunting Steve down (PMs, chat channels, email -- whatever it took), and Aaeru was "idk what to say O.O"-ing for an hour over it. But I was close. So close. ... ... aaaand it didn't end up coming together in time. THANKS AAERU ( ) (< 3 aaeru). But that's okay: I did end up eventually getting extracting the quotes and sent him the card a day late. I don't think he'd mind if I shared it, so here it is for the memories: Fast forward two years to 2015. A lot has changed. A lot has stayed the same (such as the Gravity Green 2013 theme for all of those who haven't sold out to be FuwaFabulous). I had this very weird moment as I logged in today to wish Ryoji a happy birthday and started typing on his profile page where I realized that just one program over -- one ALT+TAB away -- in OneNote I have charted the next year or more of Fuwanovel's future. I had this crazy moment of deja vu and nostalgia oddly juxtaposed against all of the new plans. There were a lot of complex emotions. So. What am I saying? I suppose I simply wanted to take a moment to thank everyone on Fuwanovel for being here. Yes, it's just a hobby site, but I've made a lot of friends here and I have a lot of fun together with you. I think a lot of us have funny little FuwaMemories like this we occasionally remember, and that makes me happy. The next few months are going to be bumpy -- I'm dealing with some new site issues which will be tricky to resolve (but possible, thanks to Nay's jedi guidance and help) -- but I promise to do my best to make sure Fuwanovel is here in another two years, and two more after that. After all, somebody has to wish Ryoji a happy birthday 'round here. : ) Happy Birthday, Ryoji. And DrKleiner! And Fiya, Khodan, and Hidekyu! -- And Keaton and Checkmate!4 points -
Poll for What You'd Like to See in a Visual Novel

To be honest, I'm kinda depressed that the poll didn't even list music. Some VNs aren't called sound novels for nothing.4 points -

Poll for What You'd Like to See in a Visual Novel
Darklord Rooke and one other reacted to oliviaisinspace for a topic
Thank you guys all for your responses! Just to make a few clarifications, I am published author and will for sure be focusing a lot of energy on the story no matter what. This poll wasn't meant for the purpose of making you guys choose one or the other, but just the thing/s that are MOST important to YOU in a VN. Also, there WILL be music, and the reason it's not on the poll is because that is hands down, unarguably, already going to be a big part of the project . One more question for those listening, how would you feel about having a game that has three or so playable characters, each one with a fairly broad but different personality type. Each character would be in the same story, but would just be playing it from a different angle. That way your initial play through feels sort of personality-tailored (maybe not) and then you can go back and play through the other perspectives. It might sound weird, but give it an honest thought and tell me what you think!2 points -

I decided I want to start a new VN (after losing my drive for I/O's last few routes a few weeks ago). Something big, something that'll hook me, something I've been lacking since I finished Umineko back in May or June. Katawa Shoujo or Grisaia first? 3...2...1... GO Edit: I apparently deleted KS some time ago (aka when I was frantically trying to allocate 80 gigs of space for the few minutes for which Wolfenstein TNO's torrent file and the game's data files would coexist in my hard drive) choice made. B-b-but she's just an innocent girl you know, just 14 years old and all you know.... and especially after the second half.... .... .......Ah who am I kidding, should've make her die for more tragedy and then reincarnate her as the embodiment of Sea God with an 180 personality switch. Miuna is definitely the best character in that show. Eclipsed has good taste. She had the best development of all the characters but the show just falcon punches her in the face. The only character I truly disliked was Manaka. She is literally the embodiment of my pet peeves and hatred and I can't see her under any different light. The rest of the characters were decent and I don't feel too strongly about them (another reason why I didn't rate the show higher, I didn't feel "too strongly" about the rest of the cast despite the show's attempts at showing their progress, this is particularly prevalent with the show's male characters who, for the most part, were pretty meh) Opinions on rest of the characters: Opinions on the couples Last issue I had with the show Summary of how i felt Pros Great art (more interesting under the sea) Great soundtrack Interesting setting which was fully explored More than half of the cast is interesting to watch Fully developed relationships Cons The characters that are annoying really stood out which downgraded my experience Best girl didn't win, and on top of that worst girl won Drama was sometimes overdone and felt repetitive, too much teenage angst Ending was meh Overall, the drama was really intense in some parts which sometimes became a little choking, what I also disliked was the character it usually focused around, AKA Manaka, who I hated. But other times the drama fell in place, I legit teared at some points because of some of the other characters, AKA anyone but Manaka. The setting was nice, but I thought the whole paralel with the story of the sea was pretty meh and quite frankly boring and cliche. The art was lovely, though I think it was more interesting under the sea, shame they weren't under the sea for 80% of the show. Soundtrack was also great, I still have all the singles and still listen to them. So yeah, I ended up giving it an 8/10, I won't let the character I hate the most drag down my experience, but the show still hit some of my pet peeves, but overall a nice journey albeit for the rocky ending and somewhat shakey episodes in between.1 point

Even if you say it doesn't matter, "it's good enough as it is" is a thing people have said about every major technological advancement in history (including many people 10-15 years ago when HDTVs were first hitting the market). Even on medium sized TVs and computer monitors, we aren't yet to the pixel density on most displays where increased resolution would be imperceptible to the human eye, outside of Apple's eyefinity displays. Once we get to that point, THEN we can be happy with what we have... and also when we start going into holographic displays. This is wildly off topic though so let's end the discussion with that.1 point

The solution would be to simply reduce the workload for everyone since the issue seems to be the fact that men and women are too overworked to be able to invest a sufficient amount of time into starting and maintaining a family. Luckily, this is something the government can actually have an influence on so there's definitely a light at the end of the tunnel (imo).1 point

Episode 18 of Nagi no Asukara Misc. Comments(spoilers) Manaka: I adore her so much. Yes she's a complete trainwreck when it comes to.. idk... common sense(?) in her interactions with others, but there's just something very charming in how earnest she is. Looks up Tsumugu's family name (Kihara) because Hikari was mad that she called Tsumugu by his first name. Tried to annoy Uroko-sama so she could be cursed with the fish-knee again since Tsumugu thought it was cute ...and a bunch of other little things <3 Chisaki: she's hot. 'Nuff said. Oh wait, she's 14 isn't she? LOL fine, she's pretty~ *Waits for Episode 14 time-skip* Woot she's 19 now. And even more hot! /creep Kaname: This guy's the pebble on the side of the road. Lel jk jk, but really Kaname's presence is soo little. He can't have any rivalry-bro moments with Hikari cuz that's reserved for Tsumugu, and both Chisaki+Manaka like Hikari+Tsumugu. The fact that he likes Chisaki just feels slapped on to complete the love triangle. (She's hot though so you get +1 for good taste). Tsumugu: Typical 'silent, cool guy' type. But unfortunately he lacks the cool factor for me. I don't see why Manaka oogles over him >.>. c'mon girl, he compliments you once and all of a sudden you're head over heels for him?!!! The 'love-at-first-sight' moments are lame as well. Miuna + Sayu: Love their dynamics. Also really love how they're just kids pre-time skip and then become teenagers post-time skip. Obvious is obvious but it's such a treat to actually get to see characters growing up~ Akari: I kinda felt ehh about Akari because I was being selfish and wanted the story to focus more on the main crew instead, but her story was actually pretty well done now that I think about it ~~~ Really enjoying how the time skip was handled. It changed alot of the character interactions & dynamics in a very interesting way; Chisaki + Tsumugu being 5 years older than Hikari + Kaname who are now the same age as Miuna + Sayu. Also, wow I totally didn't even realize Miuna was crushing on Hikari (and Sayu with Kaname). Hikari x Chisaki reunion was wonderful~ The mutual relationship b/w Chisaki + Tsumugu is interesting to watch. Especially when they took in Kaname. Just makin' tea together in silence >.>. What are the odds of these two becoming a couple? ~~~ Looking forward to how Manaka will fit in with everybody when / IF they find her Still awaiting the Avalanche of Overdramatic Annoyance~1 point

I don't like to use the term visual novel. It's too darn serious. The words visual novel have an oddly formal ring to them. When someone says visual novel, I immediately think of all the discussions about elevating visual novels to an art form (as it were), how to improve them by separating them from anime tropes, how important it is to have a serious, epic storyline, and so forth. (The thought might also cross my mind of statements made about ero scenes gaining legitimacy by being "crucial to the story", but that is another kettle of fish.) But I'm personally going back to "galgame" (or just "game" in context). For me, this conjures up thoughts of, for example, cute, moe 2D girls all holding out chopsticks trying to feed you an octopus sausage or tamagoyaki simultaneously (yes I say "you" because I always think in terms of the player character so whether I say "you", or Tatsuya or whatever his name is, in describing a scene, it makes no difference in my mind.). In other words, I think more in terms of entertainment, and accept any mild cheesiness as part of the fun, as I do with anime. I don't like to use the term project for translations. Now I'm very serious-minded about translation accuracy/transparency. You see, even though I don't fret over the actual narrative value of the game I might be playing, I sure don't want jumbled up, goofy text in a game that is primarily text-based, like a you-know-what. I don't want to be reminded of those Hong Kong anime bootlegs people used to watch. I know I have certainly seen comments to the contrary, a sort of who-cares-how-it's-translated-if-it's-just-moege attitude (And if a game gets labeled a "nukige", you may as well forget about it, regardless of what kind of content the game has besides ero-scenes). I happen to be fanatical enough think that translations are worth getting right even if it only lets you get to know some cute 2D girls a little better. I must be nuts. Nevertheless, I've discovered a few things since Mikukisu etc. After trying to move up to the big league, I found out that just being able to translate Japanese to English does not make you a fan translator. You need a lot of determination. You need (appallingly) people skills. And most of all, you need time. I don't have these things. I don't know if and when I will get these things. So from now on, instead of "projects" it will simply be "stuff I translated." Look at all the stuff that people on "projects" have to deal with. "Is this something people are really going to want to play? Will we really be able to complete this before we get sick of it? What if people or patch files suddenly disappear? Is someone else working on the same game in secret and will beat us to a release?" And so on. It's just too much. But if I just do "stuff", then it's different. I can relax. I'll translate things that happen to interest me personally, in whatever spare moments I happen to have. No promises or unfurl-the-banner announcements will be made. If something is going to become a project, I want it to do so of its own volition. That's what happened with Mikukisu--it didn't start out as a "project", it became one. So no projects from now on. Just seedlings that I or perhaps someone else can raise into a project if fortune smiles on us. Oh well, I don't usually make long posts like this. So please put up with it one time...1 point

Of zoom909 and the rest of the VN community
kratoscar2008 reacted to zoom909 for a topic
Thanks, and yeah, it would be hard to find another game like that one anyway. It was short and yet I liked it very much. It was popular because of the Vocaloid fans, though, not because of the English VN community--they have to have either significant seriousity*, or hentai. MikuKisu had neither. *The degree to which something pretty heavy goes down in the story, that's outside of your regular anime-style romance/comedy/slice-of-life antics.1 point -

What are you playing?
Suzu Fanatic reacted to Decay for a topic
No, not really. There's not a lot that's similar to g-senjou, to be honest. That sort of mind-bendy crime thriller type story isn't all that common for VNs. There are some VNs with similar aspects, though, such as Sharin no Kuni (written by the same author). If you like suspense with plot twists, there's Higurashi and Umineko from 07th Expansion, Higurashi is more metaphysical while Umineko is a murder mystery.1 point -
