You're gonna make me work for this one. There's the obligatory: Shin Sekai Yori F/SN UBW 2014 There is the light novel adaptations without a definitive conclusion: Magical Index and Scientific Railgun - Action, but lots of characters? I don't know, it just seems to 'fit'. Dog Days - Season 1 I can almost guarantee you will like based on description from before, while the rest may be a little worse. A Sunday Without God - I hardly see anyone talk about this show, probably because it went under the radar with an "incomplete" end. It has one of my favorite soundtracks, ever. The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya - Probably the odd one out on this list, as I don't know where you might possibly be able to stream it. It does fit though. Familiar of Zero - I've never seen it, but I've read the books which were good, and according to Eclipsed and Nosebleed in the Anime Recently Watched thread, it's not all awful like I tend to think. I Don't Have Many Friends - I'm surprised I didn't see anyone recommend this yet. Beyond the Boundary Durarara!! - Might be one of the better shows in the SoL genre. Very enjoyable. I could recommend any number of ecchi rom-com series but of the two that stand out for me would be Noucome - I just enjoyed it, its probably sub par in everyone else's eyes, but I don't care. Highschool DxD - The magnum opis of harem ecchi rom-com's currently animated. I'm of the belief that you can't watch a genre without seeing the best it can offer. For these, I just like to classify them as "movie-like". When I watched these, they just felt like movies. Call me weird, again, I don't care. Most of these will be difficult or impossible to stream legally because of their nature. I'm still going to recommend them anyway. Terror in Resonance - Pretty much a recommend no matter who it is, I think it's a classic. It's on Hulu. Katanagatari - I can't think of anything to say about this one, it's just different. Patema Inverted - It's a movie, I highly enjoyed it. It felt like the old Ghibli stuff I watched as a child. Time of Eve - Wonderful little OVA which I think got kickstarted to be translated into many different languages. It's kind of wonderful. It should be on Crunchy. Rage of Bahamut - Genesis - It's a fun story that is basically a shounen that continues to keep the rising action of the story until the last episode of the show. It's on Hulu. [C] - Money of Soul and Possibilty Control - Toss up, it starts off fairly well and slowly gets more and more abstract. Things that don't really fit anywhere but I want to recommend anyway. Mardock Scramble - Movie series that is too symbolic for me to fully analyze successfully, but I enjoyed it nonetheless. Higurashi - It's a visual novel adaptation, and probably DEEN's best work. Kara no Kyoukai series - I just like Nasu? It's animate by UFOTable so the animation quality is god tier like F/Z and UBW World Conquest Zvezda Plot - An oddball, just leave it at that. Buso Renkin - Pretty vanilla old school shounen with a romance sub plot. Definitely worth a look. That's pretty much it. Wait, did I just make the longest and most detailed list yet? I might watch too much anime. Waits for the TL;DR. EDIT: After further thought, I decided to add in Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood even though it doesn't quite fit the criteria, just because it's one of the gateway anime that you can talk to pretty much anyone about and they will be able to hold at least a small conversation.2 points -

I've read some other articles on it. It seems like some cases operate more like military camps and have even killed some of the kids (http://abcnews.go.com/Technology/story?id=8269601) so no I don't agree with that method of treatment. I do agree with the idea of getting them into a rehab like facility and depriving them of access since that's typically the only way to attempt to deal with addiction. This type of thing has to be examined with an emic perspective though. China has a history of extremest policies (just look at the one-child policy) so I'm not shocker per-say to see this.2 points -

I keep getting questions like, 'Who are you?' and 'Why should I listen to you at all about VNs?'... not to mention questions that are a bit more personal. So, I thought I'd answer those questions I'm willing to answer (feel free to ask more in the comments, and I'll answer those that I can in a second post). Full Handle Name: Clephas Aurenius Handle Origin: A unique character I made up for a fictional fantasy universe some ten years ago. I've been using it as my sole handle for eight years now. Age: 33 Country and State of origin: Texas in the United States Hobbies: Gaming, VNs, reading (fiction and non-fiction), otakuism, mini-reviewing untranslated VNs, anthropology, linguistics, brewing rum and root beer, cooking, and attempting to define VN terms that are actually a lot more vague than I try to present them for the sake of convenience *smiles slyly* Profession: ghost writer (don't ask me about this, look it up) Dream: To build an underground house in a seismically inactive (inasmuch as that is possible) area and retire. Take a six-month trip to Japan and tour the hot springs, shrines, and temples. Likes: Efficient and/or cunning work. People with a non-harmful sense of humor. Pragmatism. Chuuni-fiction, fantasy, science fiction. Good stories. Dislikes: Wasting time (from my perspective). Being mentally inactive (this is actually painful for me). Foods with jalapeno or parsley in it. Sloppy work done when a more efficient method obviously exists. Political corruption (outside of reasonable limits). Personality: I have a rather massive temper, that I manage to restrict through breathing exercises and violent video games. I value thinking as something that is both necessary and enjoyable. I am excessively introspective, to the degree of actively mocking myself and being self-derisive when I think I might have been in the wrong on some level. I am a natural troll who reformed himself as best as possible. I tend to think that everything is funny on some level, even my own stupidity and outright disaster. I am a recovering megalomaniac. My role-play: The 'forums' Clephas is actually quite different from the original Clephas, in that he is a lot more comical and exaggerated. He is the megalomaniacal and overwhelmingly arrogant side of my personality, deliberately exaggerated to the very limits, to the point where it is actually funny. He is something of an insane deity who devours universes and envelops them in his infinite stomachs, using avatars to interact with those inside. He honestly thinks eating people (both whole and chewed) is an expression of love. He also does various seemingly (and most probably) meaningless things solely for the sake of his own amusement. What Fuwanovel means to me: In a lot of ways, Fuwanovel is my last community. I've just seen too many otaku communities collapse under their own weight to willingly involve myself with several at once, anymore. In many ways, I joined Fuwa solely because I thought it would be fun to argue with Aaeru (and it was immensely fun). I respected her for the strength of her beliefs, even if I disagreed with her on a number of points (pragmatists rarely agree fully with any idealist). Fuwa now is the community I've come to love, with the people I've come to love (Marie, Tay, solidbatman, Nayleen, fun2novel, Flutterz, Zakamutt, Mephisto, etc. etc), and so I'm more or less in it for the long haul. I chose this community because it was a lot easier to talk about VNs here than in the more Jaded tlwiki-related communites. What are VNs to me: I like VNs, both as an enjoyable storytelling medium and as one with an immense potential for growth (if someone can just kick the industry out of its nukige/moege and cookie-cutter chuunige rut). They are emotional and intellectual rides (better on the emotions in most cases), that frequently have an impact far out of proportion with their actual quality. My VN Experience: Tsukihime was my first VN... and it stunned me when I first played it back in 2007. I immediately devoured every single translated VN, in a marathon that lasted about two months... then dove into my first untranslated - Jingai Makyou - on 9/14/2008. As I'd been fansubbing for over a year by then, I'd thought I had a full grasp on Japanese as a language... but it was a rather rude kick in the butt. Translation Aggregator with Jparser presented me with a challenge that allowed me to get around the lack of kanji knowledge on my part... in exchange for mastering how Japanese syllables were put together in reverse (normally a skill learned through kanji, rather than learning it first, then learning kanji). A few last comments: No, I do not have and will never have a Facebook or Twitter account. If you really want to chat with me live, pm me and ask me to get on IRC (rizon). Do not ask me to help translate more than one scene of a moege, as doing more than that (even for a friend) would make me want to scream. I do not have a lot of free time, other than that which I use to play VNs, so no I don't go to otaku conventions. I can cook a traditional Japanese breakfast... but sadly, the only parts I really like are the natto, the miso soup, and the pickled vegetables (cooked fish that tastes like cooked fish makes me feel sick). I have a fourteen-year-old calico cat, whom I adore and who tolerates me as a favor to me as her devoted slave.2 points

50 translated VNs you should read before you die
Pantsuhelm reacted to Kaguya for a topic
This list won't feature the VNs in order of "how good they are". Rating them would be way too much of a clusterfuck to me. The VNs are not in their respective order. Meaning number 1 is not the best, and so on. 1_CHAOS; HEAD 2_Cross Channel 3_G-Senjou no Maou 4_Fate/Stay Night 5_Forest This Visual Novel is the easiest visual novel translated to get a bad ending without using a walkthrough- which just adds to the fun of it. It makes a massive amount of references to common literature, which makes it even better. 6_Katahane It may seem like an ordinary moege- the atmosphere is light, the story is full of cuteness, which you can note by the character design and soundtrack. It gets really good in the middle, and you'll be dying to know what happens in the end. A game with multiple perspectives, it's definitely one of the most enjoyable Visual Novels I've ever read. 7 Majikoi 8_Little Busters! 9_Tsukihime "You shouldn't tell lies that you can't even fool yourself with" 10_Swan Song A post apocalyptic Visual Novel. 11_Symphonic Rain It may seem like your ordinary moege. Trust me, it's not. 12_Sharin no Kuni, Himawari no Shoujo (and sequel) 13_Sekien no Inganock Steampunk. An atmosphere full of mysteries and references that will make your head blow up. 14_Steins; Gate A visual novel that deals extensively with time travel and it's consequences. 15_Utawarerumono 16_Fault: Milestone (1 & 2) 17_Higurashi no Naku Koro Ni 18_Kara no Shoujo 19_Umineko no Naku Koro ni 20_Planetarian 21_Ever 17 Another top 10. 22_Remember11 It lacks in the ending, but otherwise the story of this VN has enough to easily become one of my all-time favorites. 23_Zanmataisei Demonbane 24_Rewrite "Could it possibly be rewritten, this fate of hers?" Another one that enters the top 10. 25_Narcissu 26_Grisaia no Kajitsu 27_Saya no Uta Only if you enjoy dark and messed up settings. 28_Higanbana no Saku Yoru ni 29_Eien no Aselia 30_Rose Guns Days (1 & 2) There are small sections of gameplay on this one, but you can skip them by pressing the space bar, so this still qualifies. 31_Sengoku Rance I feel obliged to comment on this VN before suggesting it to anyone. It's an Alicesoft title, which speaks a lot for itself... If you don't know how it's going to be like, well.. Kind of tough to describe. Lots of sex, including comedy rape. Alicesoft tends to make the whole story a comedy until right near the end, where things actually do get serious. It's worth checking out, if you don't mind Rance's personality. 32_Phenomeno Want a short VN that can captivate you for their whole duration? Here is it. Visual novel adapted from the youth horror novel written by Hajime Ninomae and illustrated by yoshitoshi ABe. 33_Ef- A Fairy Tale of the Two 34_Dysfunctional Systems Another one great for those who want short Visual Novels. 35_Daibanchou Another Alicesoft title. While Rouga is not near Rance's level when it comes to pissing off people, alicesoft's style is something which often doesn't please people. 36_Yume Miru Kusuri The endings pack quite a punch. 37_Kikokugai- The Cyber Slayer 38_Eden 39_Hoshizora no Memoria 40_Katawa Shoujo Yep, it's somewhat overrated. Still, the fact that it is substantially easier for those who are starting to play visual novels to read should not be discarded, and overall, the story was good. 41_World End Economica 42_YU-NO 43_Shikkoku no Sharnoth Yep, there is a minigame on this one. If you download a save data you can skip the minigame, though. So it still qualifies. Another VN that enters my top 10. 44_Muv Luv Alternative The first Muv Luv didn't have enough to enter this list. You should still read it, though~ MLA is definitely awesome. 45_Dangan Ronpa 46_Comyu - Kuroi Ryuu to Yasashii Oukoku 47_Hanachirasu 48_Ayakashibito 49_I/O 50_Deardrops1 point -

http://www.upworthy.com/how-china-deals-with-internet-addicted-teens-is-kind-of-shocking-and-maybe-a-good-idea-2?c=reccon3 I watched this documentary called Web Junkie the other day... It's about kids being so addicted to the internet (sometimes playing couple weeks straight or even months). They are put into these centers, almost like a jail, to "cure" their addiction. They take classes, listening to lectures to change their way of thinking and must adhere to strict rules/exercises. Forced to stay 3months against their will once they are brought/forced inside the center. I personally don't think it's effective at all, and disagree with what they put the kids through. I'll probably elaborate my own thoughts on why I think so later. -But I'm just wondering what other people's thoughts on it are. Do you think it's a good idea? Do you think their methods work for curing internet addiction? -Why do you think some people get super addicted to the internet, and what method do you think would work best to stop the addiction? (Like example: If you had a child that was going through this Internet Addiction, what would you do?) -Also, I'd like to hear any personal experiences with Internet Addiction as well if anyone has gone through it, whether you're still addicted or have gotten it under control (how you did it). It'd be interesting to hear people's stories.1 point -

High School DxD BorN closer! Thoughts?
Kyoroto reacted to Abyssal Monkey for a topic
Yes, but its going to be 12 anyway. Last two seasons as a precedent means its going to happen unless they surprise us with 24, which would make me stupid happy. I'm never lucky on these things, so it's probably 12. They will do at least two books, and the Oppai Dragon song is in book 6 and they left off at book 4, so either way I get to see it. If there is one thing I can state confidently is that they will adapt up to book 6, maybe 7 if they are doing a 12 episode series. The surprise would make it 24 with up to book 10, I don't think they would do book 8 seeing how it is purely side stories that they have knicked into s1 and s2 anyway. 6 is a stopping point almost identical to 4, and 7 would be for teasing what's next. 9 would be too short for the 24 episodes because 8 is already part way animated and that makes the stopping point 10. No matter what happens, we get to see amazing plot development (and also "plot" development).1 point -

Will you translate the BGM "pop-up"? Sorry if you already answered this in the first post of the project, but I dont know what "UI" means... ^^' If I'm not mistaken, you choose : - "Krit" as Chris nickname, when Wairu/Yandere choose "Kri" : why? "Krit" would sound as "Krito" in japanese not "Kuri", no? - "Goblin Banquet" when they choose "Mouryou Gathering" : was that a mistranslation of them? Thanks in advance ^^ Yes, we have already begun work on the day changes. We will do the popups if we are able. "UI" stands for "user interface", and includes the popups when you hover over menu items, the event, music, and skit lists, and other bits that may have been left undone by Wairu. "Krit" was chosen to preserve the pun, though I suppose most wouldn't get it(I didn't until dowolf explained). The pun is her nickname being similar to "clit", for "clitoris". When written in English, "Krit" is closer than "Kri". "Goblin's Banquet" is a better translation(in that it is an actual translation, where Mouryou's Gathering really isn't), and had we had more time, I'd like to have changed it through all of Yandere's uses for consistency's sake. And it fits what the gathering actually is, rather than leaving readers with a japanese word they don't know.1 point

It's obvious Louise x Saito is the superior OTP even after season 3 of Shakugan no Shana. Well Shana does realise her feelings later on, and you kind of understand why she didn't at first during season 2 when you hear about her past and stuff. But it does come off as annoying most of the time since it just feels like she's being dense and pushing Yuuji away. Even for someone as ripe as me back then, I found her level of tsun a bit annoying. Season 2 really fixes this issue though so you won't suffer too much at least. And then season 3 comes to kick you in the testicles1 point

You should go read it . The routes were horribly rushed and obviously could be a lot more plotwise and there may be some other flaws, but imo it accomplished do what it tried to do. Mostly through the common route, but also through the branches that follow. The author is obviously a smart guy and there are no shortage of things to think about. It's to the point where the VN is not for people who don't like thinking on the side about ideas, rather than the plot/characters or even themes. It's not that the VN is particularly obtuse or dry either, it's that it passes directly through the town of Thought.1 point -

Majikoi S is split between being a fandisc, and being a weird alternate story where a new group of characters transfer into the school before summer vacation. The fandisc portion is a collection of after stories that continue the major routes from the first game, but they're all really short and very light on the plot (or has none). You really shouldn't expect much from those otherwise you're probably going to end up disappointed. They're just fun side stories and some extra h-scenes. The bulk of the exciting new content has already been translated by Wairu but the Koyuki route sounds interesting so I'm really looking forward to that.1 point

I feel like this would only be appropriate in very extreme cases. Me, for instance. I suppose you could say i'm addicted to the internet, because I don't really have friends and i'm also not the best at making them, so all I really have is anime/manga/VN's and the like, and it's all I've had for a while. I still interact with my family, I eat and sleep just fine, and I keep clean, so I don't really see it as much as a problem. Of course it's no the healthiest lifestyle because of being anti-social, but it's no where near a problem. But I suppose in cases like the ones in the video that extreme measures should probably be taken, however this seems to be a bit too extreme, I mean can these parents really not control their kids? And one parent had to DRUG them to drag them there, like what the hell? These kids would have had to been raised without ever being punished or something. I wonder how common cases like this are, like I see people that really get into things like WoW and spend a bit much time on there, but not enough to where they neglect personal hygiene, food, and change into a whole different person.1 point

Internet Addiction
Cyrillej1 reacted to Kenshin_sama for a topic
I'm more inclined to believe that WoW is the root of all evil in this situation. It's really hard to say whether boot camp is taking things too far or not, but I do not feel it should be a preferred method. Most of the kids taken there were probably not mentally ready for that kind of treatment, and it could lead to some kind of trauma if things go seriously wrong for them. While the internet may the outlet in which this situation occurs, I would say that the source of the problem definitely lies with the parents. From what it seems in this situation, there are just too many parents that do not take their roles seriously. They'd make haphazard attempts to raise their child, lack the patience needed to communicate efficiently and guide their children in the right direction, and could try to force better living habits unto them without properly thinking of more efficient ways to teach them. Most importantly, the parents aren't there for their kids as often as they should be. If what I understand is correct, loneliness would be a major attributing factor for younger people to seek sanction from the internet. It may not have been as big of a deal back when the internet was not quite as easy to get access to, and that might be why many parents don't realize how important it is to take preventative measures again this, but it'll be too late by the time they learn. If the internet weren't here, one could stave off boredom or loneliness by getting with friends and going out to places, but that isn't nearly as addicting and won't always be comfortable. With personal computers and home internet or internet cafes, there's an infinite number of things you can do in one location and it wouldn't be nearly as much of a hassle as making friends and going out. Once a those people begin to get too comfortable with being on computers, they can start to develop an addiction to it, and the potential to take this to an extreme will be there. But parents won't realize this until after the damage becomes serious, and then they have to resort to boot camp due to their inadequacy to remedy this on their own. I feel that taking measures to make adults more aware of the potential hazards would be much more preferable to boot camp. Perhaps they can start issuing out booklets on how to prevent children from developing unhealthy life habits. Advertising this issue could also help to alleviate this problem. Also, I can't help but wonder if most of those kids even deserved to be there. It seemed to me that some of them would have been okay if they just had a stern talking to. Perhaps the media encourages parents to send their kids to boot camp on an impulse. Kinda like saying, "If your child suffers from internet addiction, don't hesitate to send him off to boot camp.", or something like that. I really hope that's not the case.1 point -

Ah yes, the Chinese. I've seen reports on this some years ago so this is not actually new. I don't completely disagree with them in the sense that, if you want to cure your addiction, you really need to be deprived of it. What I don't really agree with, however, is all the random crap that they try to drill in their brains in the process. That to me feels like overkill. But I might not have the right to talk here. China has serious internet addiction issues. There's been several people dying due to playing for days straight on web cafes and stuff like that. Just a month ago in Taiwan a 32 year old man died after playing an online game for 3 days straight. This is a serious problem over there and so I kind of understand why they are being so vehement about it, to the point where they need to build boot camps. The way I see it is, China's internet addiction is escalating to the level of drugs, and with drugs you also need severe rehab, and I guess they're applying the same concept to internet addiction. I don't think this is just a simple case of "the kid just won't let go of the computer" that you see in the west. These are people who literally have behavior problems due to their internet addictions and they can legitimately cause harm both to themselves and others. So the boot camp might really be the only way to set them straight. As to why people get addicted to the internet, the answer is obvious: cat videos1 point
