Hi all. I've been out of the community loop for years thanks to life events but I've been slowly working away at the To Heart 2 X rated translation and only just posted the first new patch in years a couple of days ago. The project is basically just me by myself and is 80% complete. I posted a summary on reddit of the project progress here: http://redd.it/36tawo Nero suggested I join these forums and it's probably a good idea since maintaining momentum and seeing enthusiasm from people using the patch helps keep me motivated. I guess I should probably start a project thread on this forum once I figure out how to. Recently, a spirited argument erupted in the Monobeno -Happy End- project thread regarding the perceived poor quality of translation samples. As this a topic of general controversy in the fan translation scene, I decided it might be worth addressing on a general level to those who might not care about this particular title. Please don't take this post as an invitation to reignite controversy in that thread; post your comments here instead. Fan translation is as much about the journey as the destination. While the audience may only care about the final product, for the translator the journey may be even more important. This is an opportunity for a translator to improve both his Japanese skills and his English skills. As much as he's doing it for you, he's doing it for himself. I don't understand why anyone would think that fan translators have an obligation to provide a quality product, and that the audience should have an expectation of a quality product. All fan translations should be treated as being of suspect quality until proven otherwise. That's really all there is to it. If you're unhappy with the final product, don't play it. A game like Monobeno will never ever get licensed in English, so it's not like a substandard fan project would be ruining our chance at a professional translation (as might be the case with other titles). So before you complain about projects that don't meet your quality standards, remember that no one deserves a quality product for free, and that fan translators have just as much of a right to benefit from a project as their audience. Maybe if there were a better resource for tracking translation quality across different releases we wouldn't even be having these arguments. And maybe if the more skilled fan translators simply took pride in the quality of their own work, and weren't so preoccupied with the attention other groups were getting, there wouldn't be so much bickering going on. Confession: Here were my first impressions on fuwa members, but some of them changed as I got to know them better~ (just for fun) mostly people I've talked to or encountered around the forum.

I'm just gonna give you my honest thoughts: You want to make a VN? go for it. Let no one tell you otherwise. Be driven by your passion and motivations and never be discouraged because there will be trouble, walls, skeptic people, negative feedback and such. you keep pushing forward and stay strong. Your will is going to fuel the inspiration of many and people will join you in your endeavour sooner or later. Why I'm telling you this? Because 1.5 years ago I started this journey the same way you did. Alone, armed only with my love for VN's and no previous knowledge on what to do. Now we have an established project and our team is full of kind, talented people driven by the same motivations and towards the same goal. Don't give up and be true to your goal and your project will never die. PS. I'm glad you read the resources we have here. They are there to help encourage people like you with the dream of making a VN. The ren'py guide (made by yours truly) is a WIP and I plan to add more to it when I have the time. Hey Fuwa! I've been thinking a lot lately. Mainly on how I will be able to contribute to the community. This was hard because I'm not particularly good at the technical side of visual novels and I'm not a translator either. However, recently I've been making signatures for other users here and it turns out that I really like it. And So I thought why not make a "signature thread" for all the users here who would like signatures. All you have to do is let me know what you like by following the requirements below. 1.) Sorry for the delay everyone, the illuminati was busy working on brainwashing the world, but we finally have a winner for the contest. Congratulations to Mcguffin! Bear in mind there's an alpha6 patch I posted just yesterday which includes fixes for some scenes and the previously untranslated Sasara route. Some of the shared scenes come from a particular girl's route and will now be filled in. I might make a thread on these forums for progress..

After a quick revision, I'd say it's at least 5x better than that Monobeno video. And you are posting it as an unedited, raw translation, not as a demonstration of your team's TL "skills". That makes a huge difference... In my opinion, only those 3 underlined lines contain actually significant errors (unless I missed something due to lack of context). The first one was confusing and messed up. It's hard to translate without a context, so it's just my guess that they were desperately trying to protect themselves from that "curse". I have some doubts about "going mad" part, though (maybe it's something along the lines of going crazy from fear of the curse?). The other 2 lines are quite... strange. They are short and should be easy to translate, but you somehow messed them up quite badly. "That is all." sounds like that old guy explicitly dismissed the younger one, which would slightly affect the following lines. "I've heard enough." was far worse - original is a generic, polite expression, while the TL made the younger guy sound rude and fed up. Something like this can turn character's personality upside-down (that's impossible to judge from this brief conversation though). I have no idea where did those 2 errors come from, you handled more difficult lines more or less fine. Other than that, there are only relatively minor mistakes and some stylistic nitpicking on my part. It's a raw translation though, so writing style isn't a problem at this point. Most of that can be fixed by editors. It's hard to judge a TL based on such short and out-of-context fragment, but I'd say it's "almost passable" (for a raw TL, that is). I have no idea how did you manage to mistranslate "...Shitsureishimasu." as "I've heard enough.", hence that "almost". ... And now I feel like reading Dark Blue. If it slows down my pace with KonoSora re-translation, it's officially your fault.

Hey everybody, Please be aware that late last night I was forced to call security and have Mr. Tiagofvarela escorted out of the GM forum. Also please be aware that he was escorted down the hallway and into another office in the Fuwa Think Tank Taskforce Rangers Division (name is a WIP). (read: Tiago has moved from being a GM to a new job as part of a site brainstorming/reliability team) I'm extremely grateful for all of his great work and for stepping up when we needed him. He's helped me put together a lot of good ideas for improving the dev boards, and I look forward to continuing to work together.

Mostly I would stop if the story ends with either death of the heroine or, like what you've wrote, Tiagof. It's not a "sad death" by the way, it's more like getting old and/or die together with the protagonist. Some sorta fetish? What do you call it? Psychological problem? Anyway, I hope you guys finish it soon! I'll be patient like a dog here, and cheer on ya!

Romantic love is overrated, overused, and mostly badly done. Overrated because other interpersonal relationships, such as friendship, are much more beautiful. Overused, because there are too many VNs and other storytelling media that have romance as a central element (there should be more friendship routes). And badly done because... Let me point out. In VNs: too much ichaicha, with little "real" romance. In LNs: romance is too slow. Anime and manga are the same thing. And Western stuff: too much appeal to the "sexual" side AND most men are flirty jerks and most women are bitches. Hardly ever there are good romantic scenes or couples with real chemistry. I'm not saying there aren't exceptions. There are great romances, but ironically, most never come from a story that's centered around romance, and those are very rare.

The full moon shines brightly through the window, like a glistening silver high in the sky. A fleeting light in the darkness. My heated footsteps pace up the stairs. Chunks of wood collapse to the ground, and the apartment's floor begins to crumble beneath my feet. A cold air rushes through the building, only to feed the flames brighter and brighter. "Answer me! Where are you!?" A thousand stars shine brightly in the night sky, laughing at the man who would dare to go back. "What do you think you're doing, shithead!? There's nothing important in there! Go home!" Wrong. Wrong, wrong, wrong! The burning heat assaults my mind, and beads of sweat run down my face. Like a repeating hell with no end in sight. The clouds of ash rush at my eyes, like a toxin of the air that threatens to bring me to the ground. The pillars of smoke rise high in the sky. The sound of sirens can be heard on the outside. It feels like my skull is split in two, as the torrent of blood comes flowing down my face. The crying of the stars assaults my mind. Laughing at the man who would dare to go back. Faceless ghouls who would mean to harm another. Running away from the shining gold of the sun, hiding just out of sight from the glistening silver of the moon. Wrong. Wrong, wrong, wrong, wrong, wrong! A thousand times over! Let thine accursed light vanish into the abyss! Disappear into the endless sea, never to return to the mortal plane! The blazing heat tortures the air, as the building is slowly brought to its knees. The pounding of my head crushes my soul like the beating of a drum. The red liquid drops from my body like a thousand bloody rivers. The eyes of a thousand stars, visible in the soul of the raging flames. The silent laughter tears at my sanity like a thousand roaring fangs. Burn! Burn away in the repeating hell, with no end in sight! My silver gaze looks to the crumbling flames. My silent scream shrieks across the earth. And then, the world turns to black. The sun pours in through the open window. My breath is hollow, and my vision is blurred. The hospitals walls are a dim shine, and an assortment of rags covers my body. My arm is wrapped in endless shells, and I can feel the bone shattered in more places than I can count. "Um...Patient 427. I'm afraid I have some bad news." The doctor speaks to me. "We...were unable to repair your left eye. Would you like us to find a donor?" Sachi lies resting by my side. "No," I said. The sun flows brightly into the room, a shining gold of pure harmony. Sachi begins to wake up. A golden shine gleams from her eye. "I think I like it better this way." From my right eye. The glistening silver of the full moon. And so, life continues. Like a repeating hope with no end in sight.

Perfect reaction image. Well, um, I'm not sure if this is an unpopular opinion or not, but I think H-Scenes for the most part are extremely unnecessary and most VNs could do a lot better without them.
