Funimation sending DMCA takedowns over anime screenshots on Twitter
Kurisu-Chan and 5 others reacted to Decay for a topic
The grimdark dystopian future is finally here, but it's not nearly as rad as we all thought it would be. Instead of cyborgs, flying cars, and smokestacks perpetually shooting jets of fire, it's lawyers, impenetrable legal codes, and people being threatened with fines for having an opinion on the internet.6 points -

What is wrong with me...
Soulless Watcher and one other reacted to Funyarinpa for a topic
Nope, which kinda irritates me. If we are going to have the site conform the laws of the world, technically we should not be talking about anything relating to sex. We already got rid of loli, let's not get rid of the best genre as well. the day incest is banned, I'll probably quit this site (hyperbole, but it won't be the same) btw that's not too bad https://vndb.org/v3002 :^) Mmmm adding that one to my "play next" list. After reading lots of tentacle eroges, pretty sure I can stomach some insect/monster sex, Inseki a subgenre of incest is a lot more common and used as a bypass to incest so it looks "more right". Basically sexual relationship with a family member who is not blood related. (i.e doing your stepsister, stepmom, adopted daughter, etc.) Blood is thicker than bond when it comes to incest I guess.... Sounds like incest, but boring Blood is where it's at when it comes to wincest2 points -

For those of you who don't know, TPP stands for Trans-Pacific Partnership, and it's basically a big "fuck you" to just about every regular citizen in every country that it will apply to. We don't know all the details yet, but part of it was leaked to Wikileaks, and there are some pretty concerning things in here. First off, you'll probably want to stop pirating if this does go through, since companies will be able to force your ISP to give them information on people who pirate their work (something that doesn't happen very often, if at all currently, since it's actually pretty hard to trigger the three warning flags and have you get fined). The average citizen can get fined insane amounts of money, and even face jail time. Now I don't think this will mean a shit ton of people are going to get rekt with charges or anything, since not only is suing someone really expensive, but incarceration fees are insanely high as well. It just wouldn't be worth it to them. Another pretty concerning thing, maybe even more concerning given that most of us are anime/manga fans, is that you can get charged with a criminal offense for doing fansubs, making doujins, making AMV's, and even cosplaying. And the copyright holder doesn't even have to file a complaint, you will just get charged regardless if you are caught, even if the copyright holder doesn't care about it. Here is an article on that whole shabang: http://goboiano.com/original/3219-anime-and-cosplay-fans-could-become-criminals-with-new-international-trade-agreement There is also something in the TPP that could raise health care and medicine prices, to the point where there might be a considerable amount of casualties just because people won't be able to afford the healthcare and medicine they need. Obviously there is a lot more to it, and we won't know all the information for about another month, but it isn't looking good at all. Anyways, I just wanted to spread the word about this ludicrous agreement, in hopes that more people will be vocal about it getting turned down. What do you guys think about this? Do you think it will go through? Sorry for the wall of text1 point

Ask sanahtlig: Answers to Common Issues and Concerns in the VN community
VirginSmasher reacted to sanahtlig for a blog entry
I see many frequently encountered issues in the visual novel community. I've taken some time to address them, with a focus on pragmatic solutions rather than long-winded explanations. Issue: I really like <insert type of VN>, but I can't find others like it, or I've already played through all the suggested titles. Answer: There's over 17k VNs in VNDB's database. 2356 are available in English. The sorts of VNs you're looking for are almost certainly there. Time to learn Japanese. Issue: JAST USA is really slow, and it licenses nearly finished fan translations and sits on them for years before releasing them. Answer: Time to learn Japanese. You'll probably finish before JAST does. Issue: Companies keep licensing eroge and releasing them censored on Steam. Answer: They're doing this because few people buy eroge, whereas Steam users are more than happy to overpay for softcore porn. Time to learn Japanese. Issue: JAST/Nukaku is censoring my lolis / guro / scat / all the content I'm interested in. It's really ticking me off.Answer: Distribution of offensive pornographic content is restricted in much of the English-speaking world. Time to learn Japanese. Also, best not to import the stuff, or you could end up like this guy. Issue: Original English VNs are terrible. Help! Answer: Yes, the English VN market has thus far failed to attract professional game developers, especially when it comes to sexual content. Time to learn Japanese. Issue: The game I'm interested in has a fan translation or a fan translation in progress, but the translation is terrible or the project is stalled. Answer: Fan translators cannot be relied upon to provide high-quality translations quickly and reliably. They have real jobs / studies that take precedence. Time to learn Japanese. Issue: Localization companies pick mediocre or short titles I have no interest in. Why can't they release something I want like <insert title from Type-Moon, Eushully, or other famous developer here>? Answer: Japanese companies don't care what you want, and neither do localization companies. They want profits, and releasing titles people want is often unfeasible or unprofitable. Time to learn Japanese. Issue: I tried text hooking with machine translation so I could play Japanese VNs, but I can't understand it or it's too frustrating to use. Answer: Understanding machine translation requires practice and exposure. It's a bit like learning a new language. If you'd rather not learn machine translation, you could learn Japanese instead. Issue: Learning Japanese is hard. Like, really hard. Answer: Yes, it's one of the most difficult languages for a native English speaker to learn. The US government estimates that 2200 hours of intensive study is required to gain basic proficiency in Japanese. To add insult to injury, Japanese has a special asterisk next to it reading, "Languages preceded by asterisks are usually more difficult for native English speakers to learn than other languages in the same category". That means they lied; it actually takes significantly more than 2200 hours to learn the language. Good luck. So there you go: practical solutions to frequently encountered issues. I hope everyone finds this guide helpful.1 point -

Thoughts? Stuff I Think We're Missing: Line Utilities - (Link: http://ckeditor.com/addon/lineutils) A set of utilities to find and create horizontal spaces in edited contents. Paste from Word - (Link: http://ckeditor.com/addon/pastefromword) Self-explanatory Hmmm. Take a look at this one. This could be great, or terrible. BBCode Output Format - (Link: http://ckeditor.com/addon/bbcode) This plugin configures CKEditor to output BBCode format instead of (X)HTML. It also customizes the editor configuration to better match the BBCode environment. As BBCode format has several flavors, current implementation of this plugin is based on the following specification: https://www.phpbb.com/community/faq.php?mode=bbcode1 point -

Elf has been downsizing for over half a decade... this comes as no surprise to me. The only surprise is that they actually released anything in the past few years. Most of the companies from the early part of last decade and the late twentieth century disappeared long ago... and those that remain are usually those that branched out a lot (Will) or those that managed to gather a stronger, more varied audience (Key)... this is opposed to Elf (the main company) which remained pretty much the same company, with the same audience... and though that audience was hardcore, it was also relatively small, even as VN company fan groups go.1 point

Sakura Spirit killed this bundle for me. I can't stand the Sakura games cause I see them as a disgrace to visual novels and what they're capable of and all they do with it is put a ton of fanservice in. It's pathetic, at least in my eyes. Plus, I already have both World End Economica games which was the only good VN in this bundle.1 point -

/r/visualnovels Census Results
Kurisu-Chan reacted to Darklord Rooke for a topic
Unless you've been sick or (suspiciously) indisposed, you may have realised that reddit was doing a census. Well, the results are in (with over 500 participants, you sad, sad individuals) and you can go over the results in full on the thread below. If you'd rather a short summary, I'll provide that for you guys here. https://www.reddit.com/r/visualnovels/comments/3ogp56/rvisualnovels_census_results/ Average age - 22ish. Not surprising that VNs are a young people's medium. A nasty man would tie 'age' with the need for 'pictures' and conclude something rather inappropriate, but that's not me :3 Gender breakdown - 90% males. Again not surprising, Reddit is a young man thing. Females consisted of 6% of respondents, at least half of which were also males. First VN - The vast majority experienced Katawa Shoujo first, with Fate/Stay Night and Ace Attorney a distant second and third. A cynical man would link Katawa Shoujo's tendency to be experienced first with the medium's low participation rate Path into Otakudom - Anime ranked highest, followed by vid games and manga. Don't ask me what this means, whether it's the Japanese medium you experienced first, the one which had the most influence over you, or something completely different is something I can't be bothered interpreting. I'll just press my lips together tightly and make thoughtful noises. The oldest VN you have read - Tsukihime is the oldest VN most people have read, followed by Phoenix Wright and Muv Luv, because they're mostly youngsters and will never experience the glory of 90s VNs. I grieve for them. Other VN communities you visit - Steam, VN discord (NFI), 4chan /vg, Fuwa, 4chan /jp. It should be noted that Fuwa has the largest number of lurkers, because we're all lazy here. Let's see... what else is interesting: Most important VN attributes - Story came in top, followed by writing then visuals. This means there's an awful lot of liars who took the Reddit survey. Favourite kind of dere - Dan was 1st, Kuu 2nd, Tsun third, Bambi didn't rate and I hate you all for it. Best translation - Grisaia was first, daylight 2nd and third. Favourite Western Publisher - Sekai was 1st, MG 2nd, JAST third. This is where Dovac sits in front of his monitor laughing at all the guys constantly shitting on him, then starts banging his desk with his fist, then pointing, then more fist banging, at which point he clutches his heart and tips off his chair onto the floor. A thumb will then catapult up into eyesight from below the desk giving an enthusiastic thumbs up, before slowly sinking down amidst gurgles and giggles. And there's a bunch of other stuff you can find by reading the thread.1 point -
Just think: if you took all the time you spent Internet posting about the inadequacies of the English VN market, you too could be playing VNs in Japanese--10 years later!1 point

Boukyaku no Rakuen Due to neglect, the protag starts "talking" to plants, and is sent to a remote academy that doubles as a mental institution for children who are "psychologically challenged". He becomes the only member of the Gardening Club and is effectively given complete control over the academy's extensive gardens. Over time, he comes into contact with other students and/or faculty who all have their own problems, to which he provides relief in the form of illegally-cultivated opium. Will he be able to provide the relief they seek, or will his relationships devolve into addiction-driven exploitation? Homeroom Teacher A cheerful woman who serves as the protag's homeroom teacher and Gardening Club's advisor, but has Dependent Personality Disorder. She often wastes class time talking about how lovey-dovey she is with her lover, who lives in the city. As time goes on, however, she talks less and less about him. Eventually, she finds out that he had been cheating on her, at which point he breaks up with her. During this period of time, she starts acting more and more nervous, and finally suffers a nervous breakdown. Protag provides some opium to help her back on her feet. Over time, however, she becomes addicted. Choose:Take advantage of her dependence Protag starts demanding sexual favors from her in exchange for the opium. As her dependence grows stronger, protag's demands also grow increasingly violent. One day, he finds her dead in her room, having overdosed. Protag leaves the academy and never comes back. BAD ENDYou can't give her any more of the stuff Protag decides it's best to cut back on the stuff. He starts taking care of her, helping her through withdrawal. She starts developing feelings for him out of gratitude, but fears that it's from her dependent personality disorder, which they work out together. Choose:You convince her that you'll always be there for her.A few years later, she still works as a teacher at the academy. The protag, after graduating, became officially employed as a gardener at the academy. They live together happily. GOOD ENDYou fail to convince herShe starts suffering nervous breakdowns again, and protag has no choice but to provide opium to ease them. Her addiction relapses. One day, protag finds her dead in her room, having overdosed. Protag buries her under a newly-planted cherry tree in the gardens. After graduation, he becomes officially employed as a gardener at the academy. There, he spends the rest of his days caring for the cherry tree.
