  5. I have seen so many users saying "I can make a visual novel with [name_engine] , its so better than [name_engine_2] because [name_reason]." Yet they forgotten that there are always bad things in a engine, you could fall for paying such engine to only discover that it has no way to make that dream game. This is why why i'm listing well known vn engines and their cons, I hope the guide will help you pick the right engine for you not the company. renpy - One of the most known engine in the world (i'm not kidding), it uses python language to make vn. It's being updated as much as it can and also people have been able to make rpg from it. The main reason people choose this over any other engine is due to the freedom to add anything, learning python takes a while but most people have the novels stay in dating sims or storyline. Another key reason it's used is due to the fact that it can make windows, linux, mac, android, and IOS, which is very great advantage for anyone wanting to build games in a certain area or so. Finally it can be use for commercial and non-commercial use, however the art is not free but that is another topic itself. tyranobuilder - The main problem with this engine is the price but if you willing to overlook that it offers almost the same has renpy. HTML is the reason people have buy the game, however there have been problems with the HTML from not being able to click anything to buttons not working. It claims to be the fastest VN maker but that is something the user has to figure out. If you are able to code 2 scenes in renpy under 30 minutes thats fast progress, tyranobuilder is drag&drop meaning you have to waste 50% of your progress to clicking on a button. lastly tyranobuilder script language is javascript, almost no indie developer even dare use javascript, the reason is due to the fact it was never built for games. It's the main reason why tyranobuilder games lag campre to any other engine in this list. Also the maker of tyranobuilder fail to understand that it was Processing.js that make games work better in javascript not ECMAScript. Novelty- its the same idea of tyranobuilder but it was first built way before tyranobuilder, also its free so there is no reason to even buy tyranobuilder other than the HTML that lags. Novelty use C++ and java to script the language, this is a huge advantage since you can use this language to get jobs faster in the world and people from unity will hire you for just knowing how to code a vn in C++. As far as i understand, the main reason no one goes there is because its only windows OS which limits everyone who is not windows. Belle - Another VN engine that works like tyranobuilder, one big difference is that it's free. If you looking for tyranobuilder alternative for its HTML, this will be the one (again it was build first). Another advantage is that it really does run well in HTML but the bad news is that it only builds HTML which is the only thing it can build the game. Unity plugin: Fungus - Now i dont know much about this engine (reading things off google), it does seem like it another no code engine. what really makes this one different from all other engines that i list is its ability to run animated sprites, unity build (standard build, no consoles included), and the script is whatever unity has right now. Since this is Unity you will face these problems, Poor graphics quality as compared to Unreal Engine, Unfriendly User-Interface (even if you download the plug-in you will still have a bad time on it), and lastly dependent of unity, if their web browser stops working you have to wait for them to fix it, if unity discover a hack bug you have to update, if they going to upgrade you have to upgrade. Cloudnovel- A website browser to make VN, the reason i put this one so low is because it does a poor job to help developers. You'll find that there is no scripting language so you cant really do anything new with it. Another thing is that you cant use it outside their website so it stays in cloudnovel with no way to gain money. The drag&drop has pages that you must click and wait for the website to load your pictures, music and your gameplay. Lastly on why it makes such a bad vn maker is due to the fact that its only in english, sure it might be possible that someone might do it without reading but most of the great stuff is in english writing and in english videos. Thats everything, I didnt add GM because its design to build platform games not VN, construct is way too basic gaming that offers unneeded elements in VN, RPG maker is only build for RPG, adding long dialog will not help in a rpg (only the boss does that) 80% of the game is fighting not learning about the story. I hope this little insight of what each vn engine offers and what doesn't offer will help you. If you have any questions post here or want to ask why [engine_name] is not added it's because i can't post all of them.

  6. How do you eat an entire whale? One bite at a time. Preferably with Cholula. How do you edit/translate/whatever a visual novel? One line at a time. Preferably with bourbon. Whether you’re a fan of the final product or not, one of the things that impresses me most about MDZ’s fan translation of Koisuru Natsu no Last Resort is that it got released, period. As in, if you were so inclined, you could download the installer right now, patch the original Japanese game, and go play the thing on your new-fangled Windows Pee-Cee. No demos, no one-route partial patches. The whole damned VN in English, finished on schedule and out there in the world. The project didn’t stall. It didn’t wind up in no-updates-in-six-months-but-we-think-they’re-still-working-on-it hell. It didn’t climb into that white panel van with Little Busters EX, never to be heard from again. The nice man was lying to you, Little Busters EX — there were no cute little puppies in the back. What were you thinking?! The KoiRizo team did nothing particularly special to make this happen. We just ate the whale one bite at a time. The rhythm method By his own account, MDZ worked very methodically on the project, spending an average of 30 minutes every day translating scripts into English. Not when he felt like it. Not when inspiration struck. Not when enough people harassed him with all-caps emails asking why the HELL hadn’t there been any progress updates on the KoiRizo tracker lately. He made it an expected part of his routine, like brushing his teeth or eating dinner. He scheduled regular translation sessions between classes or before heading out in the morning. He did a little bit. Every. Single. Day. There’s a word for that: consistency. That’s what gets things done in the real world, not 48-hour marathons every random.randint(1,6) weekends fueled by Red Bull, Hot Pockets, and intense self-loathing. Consistency keeps you from getting burned out. Consistency lets you make reasonable schedules and estimates, then stick to them. Consistency is like goddamned black magic. Over the course of the project, MDZ had consistency in spades. If he can maintain that approach to life, I have a feeling he’ll be successful at whatever he puts his mind to after college. When I came on board as an editor, I kept a somewhat similar schedule. I resolved to set aside my commuting time each workday for editing. And so for 40 minutes in the morning and 40 minutes in the evening, Monday through Friday, I’d park my butt in a train seat, break out my laptop, and just edit. Weekdays were reserved for my family. If you’re married with kids, you know there is no such thing as free time on weekends. If you’re not married and don’t have kids, please tell me what the outside world is like. I hear they came out with a PlayStation 2? That’s gotta be pretty awesome. Anyway, that’s what I ended up doing. Edit every single workday. For six months. Until it was done. (Six months? That long to edit a medium-length visual novel? Yeah, that long. KoiRizo weighs in at 36,000+ lines. Over six months, that works out to about 1,400 lines a week, or 210 lines per hour. That’s an edited line every 17 seconds or so, with most of the lines needing substantial polishing/rewriting. I have no idea what pace other VN editors work at, but I felt like this was one I could maintain over the long haul. Call it the distance runner’s lope.) Special topics in calamity physics So why all this rambling about whales and consistency? Because I just got back from vacation a few days ago and I’ve been surprised at how long it’s taken me to get my head back into the various projects I’ve been working on (or even writing this blog). And then I got to wondering how often something small like that snowballs into a stalled or even failed project. A missed day turns into a skipped week turns into a skipped month turns into a dead translation. Which then got me thinking about the coefficient of friction. It’s basic physics, which I excelled at (failing repeatedly). In layman’s terms, it’s a ratio (μ) that gives you a sense how much force two surfaces exert on each other and, therefore, how much force you need to exert to get something moving from a dead stop. Wooden block on ice? Low coefficient of friction. Wooden block on shag carpet? High coefficient of friction ... and a senseless crime against tasteful dĂ©cor. Once you overcome that initial friction, it takes comparatively little force to keep an object in motion. I can easily imagine there’s a coefficient of friction between us and our work, some quantifiable level of resistance that needs be overcome before we get our asses in gear and be productive. And unlike the one in Physics 101, which is constant for any two materials, this one is different every single day. It depends on a bunch of different factors: how interested we are in our projects, how appreciated we feel, what other projects we’ve got going on at the same time, how much sleep we’ve gotten, what else is going on in our lives, whether or not the Mets are currently in the World Series, etc. Let’s call it the coefficient of slackitude. Once we get started on a project and make it part of our everyday routine, we can largely ignore this number. We’ve overcome the initial slackitude and, with moderate effort, can keep things rolling along fairly smoothly. But each time we let things coast to a stop, even for a few days, we’ve got to overcome the slackitude all over again. And since that value is variable, it might be much harder the second time around. In fact, it probably will be. Eventually, we’ll fail to do so. And our project will die. The takeaway So other than the fact that I had no business being anywhere near a physics classroom, what can we take away from my incoherent ramblings? A couple things: The easiest way to make sure your project gets finished is to stick to a regular schedule. Eat the whale a little at a time — every day if you can. Minimize the gaps. Avoid having to face off against that nasty coefficient of slackitude more than once. The easiest way to make sure your project gets started at all is to pick a time when that coefficient of slackitude is low — when you’re excited by the prospect, when you’re well-rested, when you have relatively few competing interests. When you can focus. Use that time to build your momentum, so when your interest wanes or real life intrudes — it always does and it always will — the project is so embedded in your routine that you can just ride it out.We need more finished translations in the world. So pull up a chair and eat your whale. Do it for your team. Do it for yourself. Do it for poor Little Busters EX, drugged and ball-gagged in a basement somewhere, forever wondering when it’ll finally get to see the puppies.

  7. Due to work and school, I haven't been able to progress as much as I would have liked with this VN, but I have gotten moderately far, so I'll give you a bit of an update on my experiences. Gameplay Comments First, the gameplay... this is a straight strategy rpg in format, but it does have a few twists. First, the characters known as 'mech-people' and 'sword-people' can become what their name is... literally becoming a mech or a sword, through their pact with a particular character. In the case of the mech-people, this not only creates a more powerful unit to stand on the field, it also extends their attack range, making them more effective on the battlefield, both offensively and defensively (though at the cost of skills the mech can use being lower level and fewer in number than the characters in question). In opposition, the sword-people directly enhance the stats of their partner, giving them wider movement range, more powerful attacks, stronger defenses, etc. When joined with someone, both sides gain a precise fraction of the experience they would have otherwise gained (in the case of the Kai/Alfaria/Beldadia combo It gets split three ways, for instance). This has some advantages and more disadvantages. The advantage is both characters can get experience from killing enemies... but this advantage is weakened significantly by the fact that characters that join in a group combo generally get more experience than the two joined characters, making it a trade-off for grinding. Speaking of grinding... this game's experience-gaining is a huge pain in the butt, not the least of which because the enemies do massive level jumps (think two to five levels per battle), which makes it a serious pain to keep up, since your levels don't gain fast enough to make leveling anything other than a grind (you can replay any battle at any time on the world map). Another huge downside of this game... Alfaria is pathetically weak when not transformed, but Kai is actually more powerful on foot, at least midway through the game. This makes using the mechform usually not worth it for these two, except for the enhanced hp, but it does make it necessary, because Alfaria dying is usually a game over. Story and Characters So far, I'm still on Kai's side of the story, so I think it is going to be a while before I switch over to Shizuma. I'm going to be blunt... Alfaria feels a lot like a weaker, more naive version of Corona from Corona. She's basically a little kid in an adult's body, with a little kid's thought patterns. This is understandable in the context of the story, but it can be pretty annoying. Kai is pretty much your typical rpg protagonist... right down to the naivete and impulsiveness. To be honest, that irritated the hell out of me at first, though it has subsided somewhat as the story goes on (though he still has bursts of insanity where he does something unbelievably stupid). I chose Beldadia as my first playthrough heroine, and she is fairly interesting, not to mention she is a returning character from Yumina and Corona, a heroine for the first time in this one. I thought about spoiling her here, but lets just say that this VN puts her more in the spotlight this time around and let it go at that. The story in this VN is actually pretty good, in typical VN fashion... why do I say typical? Because in many ways, this story reminds me of why I generally go to VN hybrids more than actual srpgs and rpgs nowadays. Why? It is pretty simple... no taboo subjects. The story is dark, it is violent, and the characters make mistakes that actually get people killed in large numbers. Today's jrpgs tend to avoid things like death, except in the abstract, and as a result, their stories tend to... suck. Yes, I said it. Modern jrpgs suck donkey tits. The rare exceptions just prove the rule, rather than proving it wrong. That said, I don't know if I approve of them putting multiple protagonists in this story, especially considering the number of times the two protagonists end up clashing (it kind of feels like they are ruining the plot, to me). I'll have to see what it is like when I get to Shizuma's part before I decide if I can forgive them for committing the cardinal sin of a serious VN. Well, that's it for now... cheers!

  10. Confession: Being an older nerd who had social problems makes me sad reading this. Because I want to help. I really do. I've been there, and it's not always easy. So, I'll try as best I can here. CHALLENGE: I'm going to tell you some things about myself here. At the end, I'm going to give you my email address. Zodai already has it, but he had a good day. Seriously, just write me about something. Anything. Consider me an email Pen Pal. Frankly, I always wanted pen pals anyway. No pressure, and you don't have to give all your personal details or anything - I'm not here to stalk you. Just type. My name's Robert, most people call me Bo. I'm 38 years old and I live in Florida, but I'm originally from a tourist trap part of New Jersey. Growing up I was into golf, tennis and band (symphonic and marching). I didn't date a lot in high school. Maybe because I tried too hard and approached it wrong. I wrote poetry all the time, though I'd be hard pressed to find any of it now. I didn't really keep track of it after college, where I also dated infrequently. It wasn't until after college that I got into comics. I took a liking to X-Men and particularly Gambit, and when Marvel cancelled his ongoing series I got really pissed and looked for alternatives. I ran into a start-up called CrossGen Comics, and started reading those, and I also signed up for their forums/chat room. In another thread I mentioned you could be anyone online, I found it easier to be myself. I wasn't lying. I never tried to pretend to be anything. While on the CrossGen site, I easily talked with many people, including females. And I'm not lying when I say that it somehow managed to have at least four different women interested in me. At the time I was living at home in NJ, working part time as a sports correspondent, part time at an Atlantic City paper and then full time at an Egg Harbor Township one. I was looking for a better paying position, and I went on an interview for a new weekly paper in New Hampshire. On the way there I stopped at one of those girl's places in Connecticut, and almost ended up with her. I got the position, and upon hearing it, a woman in Florida actually flew to NH to meet me - ultimately because she was afraid I'd end up with the girl in Connecticut. So she came up, and it went very well. In VN terms it was certainly a turn down what seemed to be the good path - if it was a Steam game someone at Fuwa would be adding the sex patch. We had a long distance relationship for a year, at that time the paper decided to go in a different direction and replaced almost all of its staff, me included. So, it was either go back to NJ, or go to Florida. I went to Florida. The only person in Florida I knew was my girlfriend. Scary, especially if it didn't work out than I'd be moving again. Fortunately, it worked out. It wasn't always easy, but it was worth it. I've been married to her since December 2004 and we have two girls together. And I only won her over because I acted normal. I talked with her. Treated her with respect. Listened to her. Etc. I'm not an ugly guy. but I'm not particularly handsome, either. Anyway, there's me for you. So here's my address: [email protected]. You don't have to write your personal narrative or anything like me - just write about something. Anything. The VN you're reading. Favorite sports team. The weather. Whatever. You'll likely never meet me in person, but I want you to at least feel like there's someone who'll listen to you. You can consider me your friend even. And why not? The closest person in my life started out as internet data on a screen.

I think of you as the guy who uses the weird font. Also you wrote a pretty good review Confession: super whining time Confession: I'm curious what kind of reputation I have on here too. You could try talking to people who are also on their own. I remember going to an anime club alone once or twice.. and it's always a pleasant surprise when someone tries to talk to me... or else I just sit there alone being bored. Being on your own, it can be kind of hard to break into already formed groups.. so maybe try targeting the ones who are also alone? Since people who go to clubs mostly go to mingle & make friends, it shouldn't be too weird? I can be really shy... but sometimes I take the chance to be super weird out of my comfort zone to get to know someone and have made friends from it. You just have to make yourself dooo iiiit~ Target people you're not intimidated by first, and as you get better~ you can try with girls or w/e. As for your reputation, these days some of it revolves around the stuff with Rains (Since something like that is so rare in terms of intra-forum connections) but aside from that you seem intelligent and somewhat cute in terms of how you come off. Also, 2500 words today! YESSSSSSSS!

  16. Playing as jerkwad or homicidal maniac is only fun for so long, being generally nice is much more pleasant. But full-on paragon of virtue isn't that fun either, so I usually go with some kind of middle ground. Being good and nice to those who are nice, but not hesitating about using "evil" or questionable methods if situation calls it. Or if it concerns my companions and their safety. Friends before common good is usually how I choose. I also tend to do like Geralt; between evil and lesser evil, I rather don't choose at all. Also playing strictly "good" or "evil" character defeats the purpose of the moral system in the first place, at least for me. Why even bother if you're only picking certain answers in the first place?

  21. Ahhh so you guys started as an internet thing and married when you were 27. Wow really inspiring story. Thanks for sharing. I'm still 24 and there are still many challenges ahead of me. Your story gives me hope and optimism in life. One thing I realized was I definitely have to step my game up when it comes to finance and general real life stuff. You made it happen. You flew to NH and Florida. I can relate to this. I'm soon leaving NJ (by next week). I've lived a decade in Jersey City area; absolutely hate this place... but I'm hopeful I'll be in a better place. I can attest that online interactions really help break the ice. It helps develop relationships that otherwise wouldn't happen in real life. Long distance is definitely not viable for the long-term though... It's tough.

  22. Ah, sorry I did not make myself more clear - I'm well aware of how the Japanese feel about anime and visual novels. That does not change the fact, however, that there are concepts inherent to Japan that straight up do not exist in the US, where I am. For example: Japanese honorifics and keigo in general - I'd run into it in anime, but I didn't really get a solid feel for it until I had read a lot of VNs in Japanese. It took me awhile to wrap my mind that when trying to be formal/humble the language changes so much. The Tanabata festival - I knew nothing of this, but after seeing it come up again and again I now immediately know what is going on when someone references it. White Day - same as Tanabata, though I think I came across this in anime first. Japanese bathing practices - shower/clean/scrub, THEN get in the bathtub Proper Japanese greetings ... Are we seeing what I mean here? I'm not talking about the culture of visual novels and anime in Japan, I am talking about aspects of Japanese culture that are found in Japanese VNs. While yes, there may be some erroneous tropes that exist in VNs that don't exist in real life in Japan, that doesn't change the fact that you can still learn quite a bit about life over there from VNs.

  23. Dis some Fuwa relationship advice thread v2 Side comment regarding looks, its funny cuz among my peers you see girls all the time gossiping and fangirling over KPOP Big Bang's Taeyang and how hawt the dude is but no no no, if I fanboy over SNSD's Taeyeon & how hawt she is, I get called a pervert. Damn double standards. Regarding the how2getintorelationships, first you gotta get acquainted with a gal: work on homework together, go out for some Boba Milk Tea together, and always make sure you're the one to say hi and bye whenever you meet and part. Phase 2 is where you test the waters, throw in a flirty flirt compliment, but you gotta be smooth and don't just do it out of the blue, comment on her clothes, her hair, etc. and see how she responds, if favorably, woot woot, proceed. If not, stay bffs Phase 3 after years of favorable respondages to your flirtages you just randomly go "yo I lik u" and then you either immediately get a bad end or start the route which will lead to a bad end eventually.

I definitely would not mind participating, but I'm a bit incompetent in these types of engagements. I'm the kind of person that gets interested in various topics, and yet most of the time I find myself at a loss as to how I can make a worthwhile contribution to discussion. Consequently, the majority of my posts are idle chatter, image/video spamming, and sharing my opinion on whatever I'm reading, playing, or watching. Sometimes I'll get into a debate with someone if I feel confident enough in what I'm arguing about, but that's it. Personally, I think you should keep on with what you're doing. The more chances you give to converse with you, the better you're likelihood for a chance encounter will be.

What a wonderful doujin you just reminded me of. It was 10/10. The concept was there was a drought, so a country survived by drinking their piss. I haven't seen much watersports in VNs, and even less vaginal pissing. For shame!

  36. You very literally (which, of course, means figuratively) killed me with this sentence: "That’s what gets things done in the real world, not 48-hour marathons every random.randint(1,6) weekends fueled by Red Bull, Hot Pockets, and intense self-loathing." As for the rest of it, I've got to agree. Mostly because I take most of my outside work projects in bursts, and I know just how bad productivity is like that.

  37. Welcome to Fuwanovel! Maybe with the Witch of Miracles amongst our ranks, we will get that Muramasa translation eventually. If we do, you should definitely give it a read! Who am I kidding.

    Hearthstone

Started playing pirate rogue last night thanks to Babiker. I'm still very, very awkward with it, but I'm enjoying it. After nothing but hours and hours of cw, it's nice to have a change of pace. Speaking of cw, I'm loving it more than I ever since TGT. Justicar Truehart is really bringing out my ResidentSleeper even more. Don't worry. I'm really fucking bad at Hearthstone and I've been playing (a lot) since beta. Added you.

  42. Living in Japan, most everything I buy is naturally Japanese. However I figured tonight's purchase was worth mention. So, I decided to go and buy my first ever physical copy of VN. What I planned on buying tonight: Dies Irae or ChuSingra 46+1 What I ended up buying tonight:

  43. I suppose you could create a setting where it's normalized for the defeated to submit themselves sexually to the victor. That's still a form of sexual exploitation, but that's the simplest way to implement it across-the-board without dedicating yourself to individualized scenarios. Otherwise each heroine will have a personality, and you'll have to set up creative scenarios to convincingly portray why each heroine would submit to some random stranger. That's hard to do without giving the impression of being formulaic. And honestly, implementing "sexy scenes" while they're still your foe on the battlefield without rape or some form of coercion is... basically impossible to implement without convoluted storytelling.
