Oh, The (Tricky) Editing Mistakes I Have Made (Part 2 of ∞)
Abyssal Monkey and 5 others reacted to Darbury for a blog entry
This blog is all about owning my mistakes and putting them on public display, so let’s do this. And yeah, I knew this one was going to come back and bite me in the ass. This was my albatross. This was my giant ass-biting albatross. The great “tricky” debacle of 2015 So there’s this word that shows up in the English translation of Koisuru Natsu no Last Resort. If you’ve read it, you might have noticed it once or twice. “Tricky.” Umi, the main heroine, falls back on this word a lot to describe the protagonist. She uses it when he’s being nice. And when he’s being a jerk. And when he’s chewing food. And any other opportunity she can think of. Basically, I think she gets paid 100 yen every time she manages to work that word into a sentence. And let me tell you: girl is pulling down bank. Of course, this is a translation, so she’s not actually saying “tricky.” She’s saying something similar in Japanese. And therein lies a tale of woe and sorrow. The backstory But let’s rewind a bit first. When I came aboard the KoiRizo team, it was to edit a single route: Nagisa’s. Makes sense — I was a first-time VN editor, and Nagisa’s route was the shortest in the game. Moreover, it was an unlockable, which meant that comparatively few people would end up reading it. Other editors were already hacking away at most of the remaining routes anyway, so that was all fine by me. As I worked my way through Nagisa’s scripts, I saw the word “tricky” pop up once or twice in Umi’s dialogue as a personal insult and it just seemed ... odd to me. Tough math problems are tricky. Opening a stubborn jar of peanut butter is tricky. People? Less so. I’m an editor, though, not a translator, so I did what I was supposed to do: flagged it for TLC review, left a comment with my concerns, edited the line as best I could, then moved along. The translator on the project had made it clear he wouldn’t be reviewing any edits until all the routes were finished being edited, so that’s about all I could do at the time. When I finished cleaning up Nagisa’s route, I was asked if I wouldn’t mind tackling Shiori’s scripts as well, which no other editor had gotten around to yet. “Sure,” I said, and set about tidying that up as well. The word “tricky” popped up a couple more times, so I did the same thing: flagged it, reiterated my concerns, then kept on editing. I finished Shiori, and was asked if I’d pick up the common route and Umi’s route; the editing on both of these had apparently stalled. Okay, what had started out as a quickie project for me was slowly turning into something much more time-consuming. I could see that. But I was still having fun, so I agreed. I started with the common route, where Umi has more screen time, which meant I started seeing the word “tricky” a little more often. And I started to worry. I flagged it, left a comment along the lines of “See my earlier notes on tricky,” and kept editing. I was determined not to get hung up on one silly word. It was becoming clear that this was sort of a catchphrase word for Umi, and I didn’t want to change the translation in my scripts if all the other editors’ scripts were keeping it as is. It’d be like if a screenwriter on The Simpsons decided that “D’oh!” sounded dumb, so Homer should say “Ooops!” instead — but only on the episodes he/she worked on. Anyway, I finished the common route and moved onto Umi’s. And lo, I gazed into a bottomless abyss of trickiness. You sly dumbass, you. Now let’s talk about the actual word. In Japanese, it’s “ずるい” — “zurui.” And, true to its definition, zurui’s a tricky word to pin down. It’s often translated as “unfair.” (Or so I’ve been told. Again, I’m an editor, not a translator. I took a Japanese class or two a few years back, so I have a basic familiarity with the rudiments of grammar and vocabulary. I’m good for: “Hello, I only speak a little Japanese. Sorry! What time is it? Where is the train? I am a very cute peach.” And that’s about it.) But there’s a little more nuance to it than that. Getting cancer is unfair. Having your advisor take credit for your thesis is unfair. “Zurui” implies a level of deviousness, impishness, slyness, craftiness, and yes, even trickiness. Someone who’s being “zurui” knows they’re getting away with something — and they’re okay with that. Moreover, it has a secondary meaning of being miserly, which is something that definitely applies to Soutarou, the protagonist of KoiRizo. I have to imagine that wordplay was not lost on the writers ... or the characters. There’s no one good English word to capture all those layers of meaning. When Umi uses this word to describe the protagonist in KoiRizo, it’s clear from context that her emotional shading varies from line to line. Sometimes she’s straight-up pissed at him and is telling him off: “You jackass.” Other times, she’s more of a late-game tsundere and says it playfully, even affectionately: “You sly dog you.” But she uses the same Japanese word every single time. Sometimes she’ll even say it six or seven times in a row without taking a breath. “Zurui. Zurui. Zurui. Zurui. Zurui. ZURUI!” It was her catchphrase. And in pretty much every instance, it had been translated as “tricky.” If the word only appeared once or twice in KoiRizo, I could have swapped in the contextually appropriate English replacements and been done with it. (I actually did this in a handful of places throughout the VN, usually when it was clear she was at one extreme of the word or the other.) But given how often it showed up, I felt somehow obligated to honor authorial intent. This was Umi’s pet phrase for this guy she’d fallen in love with. At one point, I think she even uses it as all the parts of speech in a single sentence. If I started changing “zurui” to different words every time, she’d lose a fairly important character quirk. After looking at all the options, the translator’s choice of “tricky” started seeming like it wasn’t a half-bad compromise after all. It got across that Umi thought the protag was dealing from the bottom of the emotional deck, but it also had a playful, teasing quality. It was never the best word in any particular instance, but it seemed like it might be flexible enough to be just sorta kinda okay in all instances. That argument makes sense, right? I thought so at the time, anyway. And so I left “tricky” as it was. Boy, was I wrong. Mea culpa I overthought it, plain and simple. I forgot my personal rule of writing and editing: Make the journey as frictionless for the readers as possible. Don’t let them get snagged on odd phrasings or slightly off words. Keep them immersed in the story. I’d forgotten how jarring that “tricky” word seemed those first few times I saw it in translation. As the months passed, some sort of editing Stockholm Syndrome set in and I actually started thinking it might be an acceptable option. In short, I messed up. When I read Umineko for the first time, Battler’s use (and abuse) of the word “useless” seemed so ill-fitting to me in English prose that I almost gave up reading the VN right then and there. But now, I sort of understand how the Witch Hunt team might have, over time, come to see this ungainly adjective as the best compromise for their main character’s catchphrase. It doesn’t make me like it much more, but I can see how they ended up there. (But don’t get me started on “turn the chessboard over” vs. “turn the chessboard around.” The latter works; the former leaves you with a bunch of chess pieces on the ground.) So here's the deal: It doesn’t matter that I had to make literally hundreds of judgment calls like this over the course of editing KoiRizo — what to do with Yuuhi’s numerous nicknames for the protagonist, as just one example — and 99% of them turned out okay (I hope). What matters is there’s a big lump of tricky sitting in the middle of the visual novel. And it doesn't work. I signed off on it. And I take full responsibility for that. So what to do? Not much, to be honest. It’s one of those things I’d love to revisit if given the chance, but a 2.0 KoiRizo patch seems unlikely at this time. MDZ keeps his own counsel, but he seems to have moved onto other pursuits. And that, as they say, is that. Postscript As I mentioned, the original intent of this blog was to put a spotlight on my many missteps as a first-time VN editor. That hasn’t changed. I might also try to throw in some helpful life advice from time to time, but I’m mainly happy to let my blunders serve as good object lessons for other aspiring editors. That means you should feel free to discuss any boneheaded decisions you think I might have made. Odds are I’ll own up to them. I've got a very thick skin, after all. I just ask two things: 1. This blog is about editing. If you have issues with someone’s translation choices, I kindly ask that you take it elsewhere. I hear Fuwa has really nice forums for that sort of thing, y'know? But if you have issues with how I edited someone's translation, then bring it on. 2. Please don’t be a giant pixelated dick about it. No one likes a pixel pick.6 points -
Akihabara Guidebook Kickstarter - Seeking Assistance
Narcosis and 4 others reacted to OriginalRen for a topic
Hey all, Does anyone remember when I posted details about an Akihabara tourist guidebook I wanted to create a few months ago? Well, I have been diligently working on that for some time now, and by the end of this December I hope to have it finished so I can start getting feedback. I never actually mentioned this, but depending on how well it's received, I really wanted to launch a Kickstarter for the rest of the world to enjoy. Specifically, I want to launch a KS so I can fund certain elements and expand the guidebook to a more professional level. I won't go into all of the details at the moment since this is something I want to start considering for next year, but I will give you an idea of what sorts of things I was hoping a KS campaign would help fund. Through fundraising, I hope to do the following: Hire a professional editor or editors who can check most of the material written in the guidebook.Hire a professional photographer who can get permission to take pictures of buildings in and around Akihabara.Hire professional translators who are willing to help translate the guidebook's articles into a multitude of different languages. While the list seems small, there are probably other things to consider as well, such as hiring an artist who is willing to draw me pictures and a possible mascot for the project. Also, obtaining rights for using certain images may also be something I need to look into. Overall, I don't have a lot of information on this yet because I don't know how well the "rough" version will turn out. Still, I wanted to make this thread for a couple of reasons. First, I wanted to talk about why I think this Kickstarter can be successful. I was originally planning on contacting Danny Choo (the president of Culture Japan) in order to help promote the campaign. Who would have guessed I met the man standing alone with nobody around him in Shibuya the final day I was about to leave? To be honest, I was quite surprised. We ended up chatting about localized PC games and how companies like MG, Sekai Project, and JAST are affecting the market. Turns out Danny is familiar with Fuwanovel as well, or so I gathered, though I'm not 100% sure on that. Anyways, after telling him about my KS in person he ended up saying that he would proudly support it and that I could use the photo shown above as a way to promote it. He also gave me his card and said to email him when and if the fundraiser was launched. If you aren't familiar with who he is, check out his homepage linked below. Hopefully things can work themselves out! http://www.dannychoo.com Second, I also wanted to make a request to the community of Fuwanovel and its surrounding members. I am in desperate need of some assistance on this project. While I totally thought it could be tackled by myself, I realize that using InDesign to create layouts is proving to be extremely taxing; any help would be greatly appreciated. So how can you help? All I would really need help with is design ideas. If anyone is good at creating magazine-style layouts or has any ideas they can describe to me on paper, that would be awesome. I used to design newspaper layouts back in high school and I often look to the internet to see some awesome design ideas and award winning templates, but it's still difficult to come up with something unique and appealing. Not good at layouts? That's okay! I would love to hear your input on color choices if you have any, and of course if you have any ideas for a mascot I can use to promote the project (artists, I am looking at you), I would greatly appreciate it. As you may realize, I am very serious about launching this KS and seeing this project become a huge success. If there are people who are willing to assist me in that dream and help me out, please PM me or post in this thread. Again, any assistance goes a long way. Thanks again all!5 points -

Heya, I figure I would share with you guys a special run of my Katawa Shoujo LP with Hanako's BETA Path. This was put together by a friend of mine named Xaddgx! The music is slightly different, Hanako's personality develops more in this one. It's worth a look if you want to compare & contrast things between this route and her original! I have also completed Hanako's original Path and Emi's Path too on my channel if you want to watch those. PS: I do apologize for the video coming out EXTREMELY large! I don't know how to size it down on this particular forum. If a staff member wants to shrink it down go ahead. >.<;2 points

Due to work and school, I haven't been able to progress as much as I would have liked with this VN, but I have gotten moderately far, so I'll give you a bit of an update on my experiences. Gameplay Comments First, the gameplay... this is a straight strategy rpg in format, but it does have a few twists. First, the characters known as 'mech-people' and 'sword-people' can become what their name is... literally becoming a mech or a sword, through their pact with a particular character. In the case of the mech-people, this not only creates a more powerful unit to stand on the field, it also extends their attack range, making them more effective on the battlefield, both offensively and defensively (though at the cost of skills the mech can use being lower level and fewer in number than the characters in question). In opposition, the sword-people directly enhance the stats of their partner, giving them wider movement range, more powerful attacks, stronger defenses, etc. When joined with someone, both sides gain a precise fraction of the experience they would have otherwise gained (in the case of the Kai/Alfaria/Beldadia combo It gets split three ways, for instance). This has some advantages and more disadvantages. The advantage is both characters can get experience from killing enemies... but this advantage is weakened significantly by the fact that characters that join in a group combo generally get more experience than the two joined characters, making it a trade-off for grinding. Speaking of grinding... this game's experience-gaining is a huge pain in the butt, not the least of which because the enemies do massive level jumps (think two to five levels per battle), which makes it a serious pain to keep up, since your levels don't gain fast enough to make leveling anything other than a grind (you can replay any battle at any time on the world map). Another huge downside of this game... Alfaria is pathetically weak when not transformed, but Kai is actually more powerful on foot, at least midway through the game. This makes using the mechform usually not worth it for these two, except for the enhanced hp, but it does make it necessary, because Alfaria dying is usually a game over. Story and Characters So far, I'm still on Kai's side of the story, so I think it is going to be a while before I switch over to Shizuma. I'm going to be blunt... Alfaria feels a lot like a weaker, more naive version of Corona from Corona. She's basically a little kid in an adult's body, with a little kid's thought patterns. This is understandable in the context of the story, but it can be pretty annoying. Kai is pretty much your typical rpg protagonist... right down to the naivete and impulsiveness. To be honest, that irritated the hell out of me at first, though it has subsided somewhat as the story goes on (though he still has bursts of insanity where he does something unbelievably stupid). I chose Beldadia as my first playthrough heroine, and she is fairly interesting, not to mention she is a returning character from Yumina and Corona, a heroine for the first time in this one. I thought about spoiling her here, but lets just say that this VN puts her more in the spotlight this time around and let it go at that. The story in this VN is actually pretty good, in typical VN fashion... why do I say typical? Because in many ways, this story reminds me of why I generally go to VN hybrids more than actual srpgs and rpgs nowadays. Why? It is pretty simple... no taboo subjects. The story is dark, it is violent, and the characters make mistakes that actually get people killed in large numbers. Today's jrpgs tend to avoid things like death, except in the abstract, and as a result, their stories tend to... suck. Yes, I said it. Modern jrpgs suck donkey tits. The rare exceptions just prove the rule, rather than proving it wrong. That said, I don't know if I approve of them putting multiple protagonists in this story, especially considering the number of times the two protagonists end up clashing (it kind of feels like they are ruining the plot, to me). I'll have to see what it is like when I get to Shizuma's part before I decide if I can forgive them for committing the cardinal sin of a serious VN. Well, that's it for now... cheers!2 points

Uncommon word usage, in comparison to other VN translations, is actually a good thing. This is because most VN translations use incredibly basic and rudimentary language, to the extent that it sounds like it was written by somebody still in school. I've heard people complain about complex language usage in VN translations before, but when I had a look the language use was quite normal. When something's bad the first place to jump on it is 4chan. ESPECIALLY when the 'bad' thing originated from Fuwanovel, because they love to put the boot into Fuwa. But not even 4chan complained about the editing found in this game. And (imo) there's been far worse translations than this *shudders* Also, you're free to complain, I do it all the time. You should keep in mind though that a lot of people (not on 4chan) will get ticked if you complain without providing reasons. So if you don't provide any, you should expect one of the first questions thrown back at you to be 'how so'?2 points -

It was alright. I can tell they learned allot from Angel Beats and decided not to have a huge cast and lots of hanging plot-lines. I still feel that allot of things were rushed though, I would have been happy if they ended it on episode 12 because episode 13 just seemed so rushed. Overall though I found the show to be an enjoyable experience. Tomori may even top as one of my favorite KEY heroines.1 point -

I'm pretty sure translators are being paid a little bit more these days than they used to. And if they aren't, they should be, because MangaGamer's wages were downright exploitative and dirty. So I'm okay with them asking for more on that front. $170k though, that is a TALL order. This is an unknown game from an unknown company (in the west) being brought to us by an upstart localization company. I am very highly skeptical that this can actually reach that goal.1 point -

As for the translation choice, I'm not a native, tricky sounds as English as any other word to me. Same goes for useless. If anything, I found it curious how it had been translated as "tricky", which I hadn't seen before, but that's about it.1 point -

Explain Can we not purposefully try and start these discussions? Whenever anything related to Sekai goes up, the same couple of people always go, "Fuck Sekai" which is rather silly as Sekai Project, despite some faults, is doing good work bringing stuff over officially. At $46,000, full voices unlocked, we will be able to do additional recording on character voices (expect for the protagonist) to make the game fully voiced! Shikishi signed by Seiyuu and personalized with backers names will be available. <-------------- we made 59.740 $ WAS –The Hourglass release date: april 2015 april 6 update "Hi Backers, Production of WAS has slipped a little and we'll need some extra time. We expect the release to be delayed and will have an updated timeframe as soon as possible" This update was for everyone to see. may 15 "There's still some scheduling issues on getting all the voice work done so this alpha release will still be voiceless like the earlier demo." still this update was public also just a little delay is ok, i'm fine with that. - Between may and September they added partial voices and removed it later on without telling anyone, they were claiming this was the full voiced patch (the original ver of the game already have the 30k goal) Sep 15 "Hello backers, Sorry for the very long period for no news about WAS. We're happy to report that a new patch for the game is currently being uploaded to Steam, once uploaded Steam should update the game with full voice support. We'll be double checking for any missing lines and move towards an actual release." this one is not public anymore... . This patch was a mess, it was a very old alpha version mostly in japanese... October 6, yes almost a month later! "Hello Backers, The previous update should not have been posted and the update was reverted on Steam. The information received regarding the status of voices was not double checked by another staff member before it was uploaded as an alpha build. We will have another update in the future with status of release and when some physical items will be shipping." This update is also private, they "found out" about their mistake almost a month later, ignoring every comment also they deleted a post on steam forums. This was their response to my complain oct 6: "All production work was managed by the circle initially. After September of this year we've taken over. More details will be provided once we've gotten the OK from legal."<--- still not news about anything and the game is in alpha without full voices (they are not answering about this topic) This is only one of my complains with sekai project. Its almost like they don't have complete control over things they didn't create or have complete rights to... I'd be alot less critical of Sekai Project if this wasn't their 9th vn ks in like the span of a year.1 point

Not really. The average fan-translation is garbage, and I'd say this was a lot better. Far from perfect, but you should probably stop getting so incredibly anal over a single word. It's not a single word. Even then, the overuse of a single word can greatly ruin the experience. It did in my case for Umi's route. I'd much rather take that than having to reword sentences constantly in my head while reading something or having to deal with transliterating dots (god this annoys me so damn much now). I've had problems with the way certain words or phrases were translated in official translations, even phrases that were reoccurring. Though maybe I just didn't care that much about the tricky use of tricky because I lost interest in this game after like an hour in the first route. Oh well.1 point -

Confession: So I went to the Otorhinolaryngologist for the first time in years, and as it turns out, I've got quite a bit of allergies, I suppose you could call it. I've got Rhinitis, which would be the main cause of my constant nosebleeds. Additionally, I've got eczema in my ear canals... somehow. I had no idea. Just to add more salt on the wound, I had ungodly amounts of ear wax in my ears, to the point where the doctor was wondering how I could even hear anything at all. How did it get to this point? My father insisted on cleaning my ears because, admittedly, I have a large amount of ear wax. The results of his zealousness were as follows: Most of the wax was pushed even deeper, making removal and normal function of the natural ear cleaning mechanisms impossible. Possibly, my hurt inner ear canals may have resulted from his efforts as well. I just knew that sticking things in your ear isn't good.1 point -

Lewd Warfare is a Match 3 RPG fought by units with abilities & spells, over a Nation conquest/risk style map against multiple factions and is also considered a Strategy Game. Set in a fantasy world it includes Factions based on hybrid humanoids, Elves, Amazons and Mages with more to come. Each Faction has 4 unique units(Characters) with one faction leader and all are artistically represented with full body art on screen. You can check out the project on https://www.patreon.com/LewdWarfare I'm not forcing anyone to back us though It'd be a big help and their are many costs that I need to consider during development outside of the core team. I know many people will wait until their is a public demo out also. LewdWarfare 0.2 Alpha Note this is a extreme early Alpha with only combat gameplay components its version 0.21 that will feature the tavern/menu options/reset functions/skilltooltips. With everything but the last part of that done so far. I'l reveal the names of other external help that are getting involved in this project if they wish to be revealed in connection to an eroge project. But their are a few others involved in EVN content helping out currently. Images (Defeated Art- Void Mage) (Latest Match 3 Image) I'l be posting some of the content on Tumblr as it becomes available. How the game play Tree works Pick a Faction You pick from one of 5 factions essentially picking which leader/type of characters you want to be with. Current factions/Descriptions are as follows Mages - Wind/Fire/Void/Ice Amazons Packleader/Barbarian Elves Druid/Herbalist Dragonkin Dragon/Basilisk The fifth faction is genderless or does not denote male or females separately but more on them later. Note these names represent the classes/units on the battlefield map whilst we've given them names and personalities as part of the experience. In terms of faction content we'd like to have more then five but are focusing on five within this year and within our timeline plan. Overviewmap After picking a faction you will get introduced to some flavor text for your factions history & state of current affairs. On the map itself your able to select individual regions and see related stats and economy factors along with the region environment type later on we'l have art associated to each type and that will effect the battle background art. You'l also have access to the Upgrade/Purchase tavern(New idea as of 09/07/2015) The idea is when you upgrade units you'l be able to get different outfits an additional abilities for them. We've already decided how these different abilities will work for each unit already. Once your happy you'l be able to drag and select Unit Icon's to locations you want them to go to initiate battle or just straight up capture unowned pieces of land. Battle/Match3 You can have up to 4 different units in a battle, only one can be active at any given time but you can swap them out. As your character or the foe characters become wounded their will be visual changes from clothing to stance. Along with audio reactions from initial taunting to later grunts/exhaustion. Characters will banter with each other. The match 3 gameplay system we're currently using is very fast paced and you'l have to keep up the tempo of a intense battle. Whilst Managing your active unit positioning. NSFW/Lewd Breakdown Upgrading/discovery (Mutual Sex) scene within your own faction Duel with a 1v1 duel between two characters. Special Art related to two individuals getting together. General Combat Clothes tearing in battle Stance changes/expression changes End Animation on combat Dialogue during combat/Possible voice acting with one person already enlisted. Conquest Defeating a character multiple time and routing them will change their dialogue over 2-3 battles in what I call turning them Tsun or "converting" them. This will result in Lewd Sex Art We are also looking at a challenge/Duel option to allow you to match characters in some way. Nation Conquest Sex Orgy including the opposing Faction Leader in a Harem all Characters Art Piece. Types of character Whilst are characters are currently yuri centric we have various neutrals characters with more to be decided that will be singular characters outside of the core factions with their own special stories. Special pieces of land may be tied to them along with conquest/challenge stories. Extra Comments Their will be more factions later with treefolk, nekomimi(cat) & ghosts planned for later. Visual novel story elements. You interact with your characters/units in various ways from the various taverns to direct confrontation you'l learn more about each of them over time and after earning experience. Their are routed options interwoven into the game design along with designed matches. Not every character's dialogue is going to be as long as the next with a emphasis on more generalized content for all faction characters with some ones getting more attention. Neutral characters will have more specific stories and react to certain characters with more available content. There will be many places in the game for dialogue/information talking to spring up. Some of the unique scenarios that we get because of the game experience is content between your own faction, content from beating opposing factions their reactions and content from losing to those factions and how they react after winning against yours. Along with specific cases/conditions from neutral factions to events content that happen in relation to owning specific territories. Each week we work on this our world and lore expands along with all the little sub stories we add into it. Maybe in a few months with fav favourites known will be driving be able to drive content to places where people want it the most ^-^. We've got two voice actors lined up atm with a third requesting involvement but anything beyond that will be a budget requirement. I was told it'd be fine to post in this section of the site buts its cool if the thread needs moving in anyway. I'd like to post visual information and character info updates along with new designs if that's ok with everyone.1 point -

I saw the bad ending of hanako a while ago, it was really depressing but more than that it was like a horror movie, not really believable, I'm glad they took it away.1 point

Not really. The average fan-translation is garbage, and I'd say this was a lot better. Far from perfect, but you should probably stop getting so incredibly anal over a single word. It's not a single word. Even then, the overuse of a single word can greatly ruin the experience. It did in my case for Umi's route. You can always start your own translation and then do the editing yourself or gather a team to do it, if you don't like how others do their work you can easily fix that by doing it yourself and better, complaining about something that was giving to you for free is really easy but actually "eating the whole whale" as Darbury said is not that simple.1 point

it's really funny to make fun of novel because she doesn't handle English very well, specially coming from users who were complaining very recently about this types of things on fuwa, creating a big fuss! Oh the sweet irony so much hypocrisy. lol I don't have it as my homepage but to be honest is the second page I open when I start browsing the internet1 point -

I think of you as the guy who uses the weird font. Also you wrote a pretty good review Confession: super whining time Confession: I'm curious what kind of reputation I have on here too. You could try talking to people who are also on their own. I remember going to an anime club alone once or twice.. and it's always a pleasant surprise when someone tries to talk to me... or else I just sit there alone being bored. Being on your own, it can be kind of hard to break into already formed groups.. so maybe try targeting the ones who are also alone? Since people who go to clubs mostly go to mingle & make friends, it shouldn't be too weird? I can be really shy... but sometimes I take the chance to be super weird out of my comfort zone to get to know someone and have made friends from it. You just have to make yourself dooo iiiit~ even if your mind is screaming noooo. Target people you're not intimidated by first, and as you get better~ you can try with girls or w/e. you're that one girl who just happens to be around / appear randomly and are usually quiet otherwise, but when something piques your interest and you chime in you're the one that has the most interesting and/or amusing things to say ~~ looks like people are gettin' harty to hearty, will read up and respond in 3days 3hours and 3minutes cuz Histoire1 point

Morality in games: What do you choose?
LiquidShu reacted to Shikomizue for a topic
I always try to go with the good choices. Though, I do whatever I believe is right, and that might not be a 'good' option. I think there's a fine line between good and evil, but sometimes there really isn't.1 point -

Fuwanovel Confessions
Cyrillej1 reacted to OriginalRen for a topic
Ahhh so you guys started as an internet thing and married when you were 27. Wow really inspiring story. Thanks for sharing. I'm still 24 and there are still many challenges ahead of me. Your story gives me hope and optimism in life. One thing I realized was I definitely have to step my game up when it comes to finance and general real life stuff. You made it happen. You flew to NH and Florida. I can relate to this. I'm soon leaving NJ (by next week). I've lived a decade in Jersey City area; absolutely hate this place... but I'm hopeful I'll be in a better place. I can attest that online interactions really help break the ice. It helps develop relationships that otherwise wouldn't happen in real life. Long distance is definitely not viable for the long-term though... It's tough. I don't read this thread that much anymore, but I will say that as someone who had a long distance relationship for over a year, it's definitely possible. Being close to each other and having some sort of physical contact (whether that is sexual or not) is hard to live without, but anything is possible so long as you set your mind to it. If you don't mind me saying, you and Cyrille are very sweet people. You both have kind hearts and care a lot about those around you (I can attest to that and you know why). I can't promise you anything about your futures, but I want you to know that I stand on the sidelines wishing you guys the best of luck. No matter what happens in your relationship, remember to always be the best of friends and always keep your chins held high. I dated my old girlfriend Katelyn for 4 years and was very much in love with her. We parted ways because we wanted to pursue different paths, but in the end we still talked to each other all the time and remained close as friends. To this day I still talk to her when I need advice about girl things, and she does the same when it comes to men. I feel like I can tell her anything, and that is what I hope you guys end up sharing no matter what happens. Talking always goes a long way, and as long as you tell yourself that, you can make it work.1 point -
Narcissu 10th Anniversary Anthology Project
Basileus777 reacted to kyrt for a topic
The Narcissu project seems interesting but this is one kickstarter I won't be helping with especially after the muv-luv kickstarter; it's bad timing and since the game was free previously and I liked how it ended I see no real reason to back it. Lack of funds has a big reason for not supporting this one...the muv-luv kickstarter is taking most of my money. I'll be blunt but I'm also not going to kickstart anything new by Sekai Project until I receive what I've actually backed from them. I am still not a fan of the constant announcing of titles only to later announce a kickstarter to actually make said titles happen. I'm all for this game but until I see the quality Sekai Project is capable of bringing I'm going to hold off on kickstarting anything new. I was not a fan of what they pulled with the Michiru Mahou Shoujo spin-off (admittedly more Frontwing's fault), am a tad annoyed by the Grisaia kickstarter (these are minor issues of a failure to communicate), am surprised by all the problems with WAS, and so far Clannad may be the only thing I've backed from kickstarter that actually ends up not annoying me. The whole lack of marketing and a piss poor website for denpasoft (and to an extent sekai project's main page) are all reasons I'm just a little cautious when dealing with them. My opinion is not based purely on hate for hate's sake as I have had issues with them and believe it is well within my right to refuse backing a kickstarter until they actually prove they handle a big kickstarter to the end. G-Senjou no Maou or Clannad (whichever comes first) will be my basis for future interactions with the company and the handling of the kickstarters I myself have backed will determine whether I give any of their other kickstarters a chance. Sure things can happen to cause delays or change things from initial impressions but this just means I need to be more critical of Sekai Project's handling of these licenses as well as view with a critical eye the actual companies in charge of the games. I'm not saying I'm against Sekai Project (I actually really appreciate all the titles they are managing to bring over) I just want to see what they are capable of (big project wise) before I take a risk with kickstarting again.1 point -
Your biggest turn-offs in visual novels?
Funyarinpa reacted to Abyssal Monkey for a topic
That Suzu peeing scene in Ayakashibito was also... Yeah Hmmm I think I can stomach peeing scenes no problem but what makes me cringe is the act of peeing while inside the woman. What a wonderful doujin you just reminded me of. It was 10/10. The concept was there was a drought, so a country survived by drinking their piss. The way to propose was to give the vagina a golden bath. The MC unwittingly did it to the princess of the country. Wonderful things ensue. I haven't seen much watersports in VNs, and even less vaginal pissing. For shame!1 point -
Funny thing - you can be anyone you want on the internet. I'm actually myself. Maybe it comes from being older, but I find the internet the easiest place to actually be myself. And with that... Confession: your lack of likes to my reputation makes me think you all hate me. As all things Japanese entertainment has taught me, if you don’t instantly respond with liking me, it means you completely hate me. Why snepai?1 point
