  4. All right Fuwanovel, the holiday season is fast approaching and I just thought of an awesome idea for all of the members that frequent the confession's thread on a regular basis. For the past year or so, members in this thread have opened up to one another in a lot of different ways. While it may not feel like this to some of you, I definitely think this thread has become a safe haven for those who experience problems in your life or just feel like getting something off your chest. It warms my heart to see so many people be accepting of each other, and while there have been moments where joking is a must, for the most part I can tell that everyone genuinely cares about the people who come here. As such, I wanted to do something special for all of you. I think we should host an exchange of words in the form of a secret Santa activity. Essentially speaking, everyone who wants to participate would be allowed to write some heartfelt messages to one another in secret and send them to me via PM/email/Skype before a certain deadline. I would then take your secret message or messages (you can totally write as many as you'd like) and read them to everyone during a live Christmas stream (where yes, I would dress up like Santa Claus). I of course would keep names anonymous, and everyone could enjoy a little holiday spirit and confidence boost. The reason I want to do this is because I feel it's a good way to thank everyone for all of the amazing respect this thread has created. Opening up to people (even if it is the internet) is tough, and I think this a great way to have a little fun while doing it.

  5. Since the mod make the topic trail off I put it back on the rail To be honest I was lost pretty early in this thread. Mainly because I don't know about english market nor fapanese market. But, since the topic is "around the world", I'll talk about french market ^^. The thing is, right now, the vn community in France is growing, and so the number of tl project is increasing. The french are really interested in Japan, though it's mainly because of the manga, there is really a guenuinely interest for Japan as a whole. And even if it's a niche market people will run into VN if they go to Akiba. French people may be less biased toward 18+ content, because of the manga market deeply implanted in France (so there is a certain number of H-manga here in plain sight) I often talk about VN around me, even with non-otaku friend, but I never get the "ewww" reaction. I even made few of them trying without asking them to do so. Well maybe it's me being donkan, or having a special trait or, and it's likely that, they're not bothered by the subject itself. The point is it's possible to get a "real" VN market in France without relying on Steam. Actually, right now, I'm mounting a project which could change the VN market in France. But the main problem is that it's over-shadowed by english. Since most people under 30 here know english, why bother to tl in french? And of course the localization thing ^^" In conclusion I think that if we do "our job" right, France can have a good VN market. (oddly enough I feel like what I just wrote make no sense..... ) And I join Rose, OELVN will become something important in the futur.

  6. Methods for arriving at "truth" include empirical observation, deduction, and inference. These are the basis of scientific and philosophical investigation. A limited number of empirical observations suggest Valve takes a 30% cut. We can infer from the lack of disagreement that this 30% rate is prevalent, if not universal. That Valve would select a rate "randomly" for each developer using a method akin to a random number generator is simply absurd. We don't need empirical confirmation to deduce that this is inconsistent with good business practices, and therefore infer that it is incorrect. Furthermore, the Steam marketplace was established specifically to allow developers to self-publish and sell directly to consumers, addressing longstanding developer complaints about publishers and retailers taking the lion's share of profits. Steam is well-liked and supported by developers, which is part of the reason for its success. Your criticism of the platform frankly seems unfounded. I've never heard a developer complain that Steam took an unfair share of their profits. They do however complain about publishers like EA and resellers like GameStop.

  13. File Only Virgin Heroines under suspension of disbelief. I don't really mind it that much, because both the fact that everyone is a virgin as well as the fact that virgin sex doesn't suck, is really just fanservice (or escapism). Having a feeling of "perfect romance", as Tyrael put it, is important for some people. And trust me guys, nobody wants realistic virgin sex h-scenes. Unless you're part of the rape-crowd, but that's an entirely different horse. Hot virgin sex is like exploding gasoline in movies. Just accept it. What I do dislike however, is that the common romance author doesn't seem to believe that a general audience can accept true love as true love, if the female character already plowed someone else. That unfortunately rarifies a lot of possibly really good plot ideas. Ideas like: - Ex-girlfriend romance = Okay, that only counts to 50%, but I'm still really intrigued by this kind of story. Makes for good drama. - Widow romance = The girl's previous lover died and the protagonist has to fill a gap. ( ) Expect the drama to be teary. - "I always liked you, but you never made a move so I fucked your best friend/brother/dad"-romance = Despite the shortage of words, very self-explanatory. Once again, makes for good drama. - "My sweetheart got raped and we try to deal with that"-story = Very dark and out of place in cutesy moege, I know. but every story can be interesting as long as it goes along with the tone.

  14. This chart is a freaking joke. You may not like excessive sex scenes/themes but nukige is a classification of visual novel, no matter how you bible thump the shit out of it. If nukige or other vns genres you deemed unnecessary are included in this chart, it would make more sense as nukige makes up a good portion of all translated and localized vns. As much as you hate it, a good majority of all vns have some kind of suggestive theme that is sexual in nature and there's really no avoiding that. You can castrate yourself or not masturbate to vns ever, but one of the top reasons why people read vns is for the sex and there's absolutely NOTHING YOU CAN DO ABOUT IT.

  15. Hey all! I have been creating a lot of episodes for my video podcast series on my YouTube channel recently, and I could use some help. It's been a lot of fun so far, but I really wanted to feature someone on the cast to talk about some sort of topic that interests them. Right now, I am totally out of ideas. Would anyone be interested in being featured on the cast via voice? If so, do you have any ideas for an episode you would be interested in talking about? The topic can literally be anything that sparks your interest, so let me know! If you aren't sure what the cast is like, check out my latest episode down below.

  17. I wanted to make this thread to discuss some negatives and positives about the visual novel market around the world. While my post only focuses on the negatives, I encourage positive discussion as well. I have listed some major points below addressing what I believe are problems in the western market for PC games and what this means in the possible future. 1. Lack of Moege Localization - I don't think it's a huge surprise to a lot of people that fans tend to enjoy cute slice-of-life romance novels with some comedy thrown into the mix. While this isn't true for every fan, I would say that at least 50% of visual novel players in the west and currently in Japan (as shown by Getchu's sale numbers each month) enjoy moege. The problem here is that western developers are not translating these novels due to a lack of getting licensing rights. I believe there are a lot of reasons for this (one of those reasons being stated in a thread located here), and because of this I think there will be a point in the distant future when visual novels reach a peak and companies in the west run out of material to work with. 2. Running Out of "Good" Games - This point is a little bit arbitrary because I can't really define what a "good" visual novel is, however I can safely say that there are certain games which the community feels are excellent reads. To give you an example, ask any English reader of visual novels what games they have played and which ones they enjoyed the most. Chances are they will all have very similar answers. While there is nothing necessarily wrong in enjoying games everyone else agrees is good, there is a problem for localization companies that comes from this idea. Let me provide you with an example of how good games will eventually reach a peak and how I believe this will affect the market in the west as a whole. Let's use the well known company Key. Most visual novel fans strongly agree that they make great games as shown by their ratings and popularity outside of the VN market. Now imagine this: what happens when and if all of the Key games become localized? Companies will no longer have games to translate from them, and as such, there won't be any more Key games in the future. In other words, there will come a time when "good" games have all been translated and localized, and when that point comes in the distant future, what do companies do then? This idea brings me to my next point. 3. Company Release Dates - Companies like Key cannot afford to release a game every year like most visual novel groups that produce moege can (i.e. = Lump of Sugar or Pulltop). While I can't specifically say what the major reason behind all of this is, there are some reasons I am sure you as a reader can deduce. 4. Japanese Priorities Set Visual Novel Localization - The Japanese PC game market is highly dominated by moege romance novels and nukige. This can be shown through Getchu's top sale numbers for visual novels each month (i.e. = Clover Day's additional h-scenes a year ago), as well as the extensive amount of advertising that is plastered in Akihabara for these types of games. The last Friday of the month is known as "release day" in Japan, where most of the big companies sell their games. Because Japan itself is the country all of these visual novels are being made in, translators (whether professional or not) are stuck with the content the country provides. If you are a professional translator, this poses a challenge (see point #1 above), and if you are a fan translator, you might be stuck doing a project for a type of game you aren't interested in yourself. In the end, I worry for the market simply due to the fact that Japan is and currently has been dominated by moege and nukige. While I enjoy the former style of games, not everyone likes them. I feel our viewpoints of what we want to have and what we expect to have as fans coordinate too well, and as such this causes an issue. We want good visual novels to be translated, and therefore we expect it to happen, ignoring all of the factors that may prevent this. Japan itself controls the visual novel market, and so long as we continue enjoying the genre, we are subject to enjoy what they continue to produce. What are your thoughts on the matter? I look forward to reading your responses!

Confession: even though I'm American, I kinda like soccer, and secretly long to be a soccer snob. But I want to be an extreme soccer snob and follow a league nobody else in America probably even cares about. It's too easy to follow the Brits or Spaniards. So naturally, I have an app that gives scores for Veikkausliiga installed on my smartphone. Now I need to pick a team and try to get a jersey and become instant super snob.

  20. More or less what I was going to write to the word. Like hell am I going to find out how to get to every single ending through trial and error, or painstakingly trying to remember every chain of events that got me to a certain point. That said, the blind run first is pretty important, and I don't like walkthroughs that give explicit spoilers.

  21. If I'm not wrong the official version was the reason the fan-tl was dropped in the first place. Found from the internets: "They are the same game in one. You can access the two different games from the teleport in the main city hub. One is for Hollow, one is for Aincrad (Infinity moment)."

  22. Only all the damn time. I treat VNs same as I would any other game: first run is blind, remaining runs are done with a walkthrough for 100% content completion. OCD FTW. "Solve the mystery" type games are the sole exception — e.g., Banshee's Last Cry, etc. I play blind until I "solve" it, then do remaining runs with the walkthrough.

    Cicadas/Semi (蝉)

As someone who lives in an area with a lot of crickets, I do not appreciate loud bugs like cicadas. In the summer especially, the noise gets unbearable, like those broken lamps that constantly make a static noise, except you can't turn it off and have to bear with it for hours. I don't want my eardrums in a mush just to appreciate the arrival of summer thank you very much. Fun/sad fact: the other day I was casually reading a VN with my window open and there was a scene where cicadas were making noises in the background. I decided I've read enough for now and turned off the game, but then I kept hearing the same noise. Thinking I glitched my sound system I turn off the speakers, but the noise persists. Did I curse my computer? I decide to turn it off, but the bug noises don't stop. I'm at a loss for a couple minutes but then I quickly realize it was just the crickets outside being loud as hell, so much so they blended with the game's own cicada SFX. TL;DR Cicadas are the spawn of Satan.

  30. From the spoilers I've read, the cutscenes sound (unintentionally) hilarious and I'm ready to fully embrace Starcraft's transformation into Dragon Ball Z. That said, I haven't even played Heart of the Swarm yet, lol. I should get on that because the campaigns do sound fun. I played SC2:WoL multiplayer for a short spell but I don't think that's something I could keep up, and I don't feel like paying for additional campaigns until they're real cheap.

    Non-Virgin heroines.

I am quite disturbed by the amount of blood they every time bleed. It seems authors never ever saw a virgin (or that's just a trend?) as normally there is or no blood at all, or 2-3 blood drops. But in VN it is like girl hold there a 200ml blood package So absolutely unbelieveable. And such "first case" scenes tend to last and last for SO long, that this is going beyond ridiculous. That's why my fav h-scenes are in old games. Girls are rarely virgins there, the length (I mean accompanying sluuuuurps etc.) is rather small, comparing to currents ones, and they give you perfect idea, how all happened, no need to describe every single stroke

  35. Steam's cut is only 30%, not 70%. And that's honestly a lot more generous than most other means of game distribution. no its random for indie but few have told that its 70% cut if you are a company with high value game (what SP has been doing all this time). It's not "random." Every single time I've seen a developer disclose their revenue numbers, big or indie, it has ALWAYS been 30%. So says Phil Fish, and so says court documents from a THQ vs Sega case, which covers two VERY different kinds of games. I have seen a variety of other sources that all say 30%. I have never seen another number, let alone a number as colossal as 70%. And Sekai Project has not released a single "high value" game thus far, their sales are pretty low in the grand scheme of things. What's your source on this?

  36. my advice is: don't read an easy novel just because is easy....like hanahira, yes, it is easy to read but you wont progress at all because it's really boring! so pick a more complex one but that really interest you, you will learn and at the same time enjoy what you are doing. this one https://vndb.org/v9890 is easy to read and the plot and characters are really interesting.
    1 point
  37. I'm pretty indifferent to it, couldn't really care less. It makes sense for a good chunk of VN's because they take place in high school and the characters are still young. When heroines are older though it makes sense for them not to all be virgins at that point, though it's not completely impossible. Yea, for anal I'm really glad that they don't step up on that realism thing.

  38. The problem of the cut of ero content is not the porn itself. Half the point of eroges is that because they are niche 18+ products, you can do whatever the shit you want in it as long as you throw in some porn. Platforms like Steam won't allow that. You won't see SubaHibi, Saya no Uta or SayoOshi going to Steam, and it's not a question of porn (i.e. sex as masturbatory material). Cut that off and eroge loses a lot of what makes it a very particular and interesting sub-culture. And all you end up with is a medium like any other. That's a pretty opinionated point of view, but if Key VNs and Grisaias and Katawa Shoujos is all that awaits the future of the english eroge (or visual novel, whatever, it's the same thing) market, well frankly it's a bit boring. And throwing a Muv-Luv or even other really good VNs in the lot isn't gonna change my point of view.
    1 point
  39. You are presenting a false dilemma; people who play nukiges can and do also support the regular industry, you can't just exclude all people who play nukiges as irrelevant, especially not when nukiges, like it or not, fit into the visual novel story telling format, and are therefore inherently part of the same medium, but I'll expand a bit more: You are indeed able to separate regular movies from pornographic movies, I'll give you that much, but the lines become way thinner (if not invisible) when you go into VN territory, because in movies you have graphical and non graphical sexual content, a characteristic that clearly divides them and has crystal clear worldwide guidelines, whereas in VNs there's basically nothing of the sort. Sex in VNs is 99% of the times always graphical and VNs with any sort of sex always get rated 18+, the only thing "separating" them (in the West, in Japan they're all in the same shelf) is the amount of sex, but that is not enough to separate them into different mediums or industries. But even forgetting whether nukiges are VNs or not, what's really noteworthy here is that you include moege with some level of sexual content in the chart, yet refuse to put those in the "porn" medium alongside nukiges, because according to your definition, if there's enough story, it can't be considered pornographic, even if there's clearly explicit sexual content in it, and more so typically with the intent to cause arousal in the reader. You are throwing around an arbitrary definition of what pornography is when pornography has been clearly defined for years now. If you're going to separate "non-pornographic" and "pornographic" mediums, then at the very least eliminate all VNs with any explicit sexual content, otherwise you're just being biased towards nukiges exclusively and attempting to use logic to excuse your own personal disdain for them just discredits you even more. My main point is this: your chart clearly wants to represent all translated VNs, but then proceeds to exclude a big chunk of said translated VNs, a chunk that can also be quite relevant to the trends you are demonstrating in the chart, so it would be sensible to include it. In the end it comes down to semantics, you entirely refuse to accept nukiges have always been an integral part of the medium because they don't fit with your own definition of what a VN should be like, and therefore it is completely irrelevant to represent them, regardless of how much they actually weigh in. Well, it's your chart, so do as you like, but you should really be conscious that this chart misrepresents the entirey of the medium the way it is now, so I guess what I would suggest is change the title to something like "all non-nukige VNs" or something, that way at the very least you avoid discussions of this sort.

  41. Re: Running Out of "Good" Games Won't happen. Most localization companies can't even keep pace with individual Japanese developers (just look at JAST and Nitroplus, or MangaGamer and Navel). That's not even factoring in the new partnerships that are occurring. With ~95% of VNs untranslated, running out of good VNs to translate is an odd concern. There's a lot of problems bogging down the English eroge market. Here's a few: Porn stigma: English-speaking cultures stigmatize porn. In Japan, porn sells games. In the West, it has the opposite effect, as English speakers equate presence of porn with "no other value". In addition, porn gets in the way of mainstream distribution, advertisement, and press coverage. Add to that an audience that thinks porn should be free, and you have a real market issue. Small market is small: Because of other factors, the market is limited. Because the market is small, many Japanese developers aren't interested in catering to it. As a result, we don't have a variety of good games that will appeal to different interests, which keeps the market small.Visual novels aren't games and aren't books: VNs fit into a niche between the two with no established market in the West. They're games without gameplay. They're novels with often subpar translations, or simply prose that doesn't fit established conventions and Western concepts.VNs are viewed as sexist escapist fantasies for nerds who can't get a girlfriend: This stigma turns people away, discourages open discussion and dissemination (especially offline) by those who stick around, and encourages a culture of piracy. The culture of piracy: Because of the above factors, as well as the nature of the target demographic (tech-savvy college-aged males usually with no stable income), the target audience tends to pirate rather than buy. One thing I've learned is that people are more likely to buy games if there's no free alternative available to them. Unfortunately, the VN fanbase tends to be tech-savvy, so that rarely occurs. Steam is a better target, as evidenced by the 15k or so hits on my Sakura Swim Club patch install guide (most VN fans could install the patch without a guide I'm sure).

7/10, Im guessing lawyers are in hell already? A man buys a truth robot, it smacks someone whenever they lie about something, so the man decides to test it out. He asks his son what he did today, his son replied that he went to school, the robot smacked him. The son confessed he went to watch porn with this buddies and he skipped school, so the man laughed and said: back when I was your age, I didn't even know what porn was, and the robot slapped him too. The man's wife walks in laughing after hearing the commotion and said: haha, after all he is your son , and the robot slapped the man's wife.
