No I wont admit it because I am the one who watches those. Name me an ecchi show that is on the level of anime like Cowboy Bebop or Fullmetal Alchemist. I think asking for an anime that's about fanservice to be on the same scale on what some would consider some of the greatest masterpieces of anime might be setting your scales a bit too high. It's a pretty unrealistic expectation to be frank. The Monogatari series is a good example of a great anime with a good story and ecchi elements, though I know some wouldn't consider it an ecchi series (MAL doesn't have an ecchi tag for it) it certainly has it's moments of fanservice. Edit: But overall fanservice in anime does send a really mixed message to a lot of western audiences. The west are such prudes.

The best translations are works that remain true to the characters and to the dialogue and story lines. The translator is not the artist. The translator is the vehicle for the original artist to be voiced in a new language. Cutting out dialogues or changing stories and characters is absurd and amateurish. Since MG was brought up I've been looking at some of the descriptions and character profiles of the games and VNs. Some are great but many are dreadful. They make no sense in English. Pst... Hi One of the translators on the project here. We decided to leave the desu in the English version for a couple of reasons. 1. To generate this discussion and see what people have to say. Obviously desugate has really picked up steam. Which is great. Debate shows passion for the art and loving or hating it is a much better response than no response at all. Yes, it is a marketing test. Thank you for participating. 2. Its not so much a verbal tick as it is a mental tick that reveals itself verbally. Lycorice is an interesting and fun character. The desu appears only a short number of times. We present it when she herself repeats it. She says desu once just about all the time. Whats interesting for us is why she says it twice. She is confirming her answer to who she is speaking to. She is confirming to them she understands what they are saying to her but maybe more importantly, she is confirming her response to herself. Yes, there should probably be a footnote about it or have it mentioned in her character profile. She's a couple of beers short of a 6 pack that is true. I see a lot of Japanese work that completely gets the life sucked out of it by poor translators, translators in a hurry or translators who are not qualified at a cultural and or language level for the work. You're comparing apples to oranges. Both CB and FMA are absolutely terrible at ecchi (since they... kinda don't have it), so in this particular field even the shittiest harem crap will beat them (while they will obviously win in every other field, at least CB - FMA is just good, not awesome). As for ero RPGs/Roguelikes - they don't really need game-over-rape. Actually, I definitely prefer those that incorporate sexual content into the gameplay, instead of limiting it to token game-over scenes. Defeat-rape is much better when it doesn't lead to instant bad ends and the protagonist/heroine has to face long-term consequences (corruption, pregnancy, etc.). Sex can be a part of combat/leveling mechanics, there's prostitution and so on. There are also games like Kamidori, where the protagonist consensually bangs everything that looks more or less female (I hate that approach, though). But well, considering it's Winged Cloud, I'd expect the most crappy approach - fully consensual sex-scenes in fixed points, completely separated from the gameplay (beat "area 1" = get "token H-scene 1", repeat ad nauseam). Kinda like in Demon Master Chris (maybe with less rape, though scenes in DMC were so poorly written, that they didn't really seem like actual rape to me).

No, really, I should kill you know for this, lol. Actually, the character MAY have had an influence I wasn't aware of, but it's the way the series is developed, storytelling-wise, what actually is influential to me. It's an italian production and I'm spanish and it's not like the series were a hit here or anything, but I think the scripts are great. So yeah, perhaps there's more to our main character Hugo Smirnov than just Ezekiel and Hartigan (check out the 3rd video for a short character profile)... Heh... the supernatural element is not planned, but not completely discarded either.

I cannot think of any VNs that are my favorite at the moment, because it has been several years. I do see Hakuoki sitting below my TV though, and I remember really enjoying the historical aspects of it. I moved on from VNs to choice based video games, so it's difficult not to get those out of my head. I remember playing The Second Reproduction and If My Heart Had Wings. I know I played others, but my memory is so bad. XD Also, I am not sure how I stumbled upon VNs in the first place. I remember being a little girl and playing those frilly flash games with cliche stories. So maybe that's it haha.

Same reason why a lot of ecchi anime get made. There are a lot of perverts who are fans of this medium. Plus, people like Noble playing them helps a lot with traffic. Don't dare to put my lovely ecchi animes and moeges at the same level with this shit.

I think there is only one way for visual novels in the West to be saved. You need leadership in this market, you need somebody to step up to the plate and say "NO! THIS IS NOT GOOD ENOUGH!". People need to realise that we can do better than this, that supporting these titles just for a couple of lulz really isn't worth it. Imagine what you could do if you had actual trained writers who studied literature in college and could use their skills to craft a masterful visual novel. Imagine a world where people value games that take time to build rather than pointless shovelware that feels like it's been put together by a couple of monkeys on LSD. Imagine a beautiful place where studios like AJTilley don't exist. Think about the power you and your wallet have and how you can shift the course of history. The world of visual novels is but an oyster, waiting to be pried open at any moment and show its true value. Indeed we have strayed away from the right path. But not all hope is lost, visual novels can still thrive and build a wonderful market. What we need is a guiding light, and fear not, because we have one already, we just can't see it yet...
