I'll quote myself: tl;dr it would be giving way too much credit to feminists or whoever else to think they are the reason why we can't have shitty boobs games in the west or that they have any sort of censorship power. This, in my opinion, is either some attempt by Koei to discharge themselves from the responsibility of not bringing the game over here or a blunder from their facebook page manager (who is clearly not very articulate in english).

Confession: I've been playing a lot of Shining Force III lately and I must say I am really enjoying it. Still on scenario I, but this seems like it will be a lot better than SFI and II. SFII was by far my favorite, so we shall see what SFIII does to my overall ratings for the games.

A Link Between Worlds is a fun game, Dynasty Warriors 8 Vita probably still would've been the better choice but ALBW is great too, it seems. And I'm not a fan of Zelda. The entire controversy is completely one sided. Nobody was complaining about DOAX3 at all, if their only reason for not publishing it in the west was fear of feminist criticism then that's a pretty lousy reason, and I don't think anyone of importance brought it up. A lot of people are crying censorship on the whole thing but that's just bullshit, nothing is stopping them from localizing the game they just decided not to do it. I'm probably wrong but this entire thing reeks like a publicity stunt.

I never follow latest releases either and I read close to a thousand visual novels so far. There's thousands of visual novels out there over the past decade, so much.... that you can't read them all in your lifetime. This is assuming you can read untranslated visual novels though. For translated ones, your selections are severely LIMITED.

I'm displeased by the lack of controversial stuff on that translation, too clean and well done. How can we argue and create a flame war now?

My mind was never blown sadly. Either I didn't get it, or it took too damn long to get interesting that in the end I didn't care. It was weird to me. Same, never got into any route really to be honest :/ Almost done with Umi's route in Koisuru Natsu no Last Resort. Yeah, it kinda tends to miss the mark in pretty much every route (I finished all of them and am currently in the 3P bonus route). It focuses too much on h-scenes and cute relationship moments to do anything special with the story. From what I have played I couldn't really care about the story a whole lot. The fact that it focuses on the cute relationship moments is why I chose to read it Not disappointing me so far anyways.

Anyone who likes Tomoyo as a character (I do as well) should be appalled and enraged by the ending. Just saying. The whole route is a horrible mess, but it ends with a three-course shit meal*. *- My choice of words might be influenced by the fact that I'm reading Euphoria at the moment.

I think they'd rather translate Sona-nyl and Valusia first. MangaGamer is adverse to licensing already-translated works in the first place and both of the other more recent untranslated steampunk games are more highly regarded than the currently translated ones. And then by that time, the next Steampunk game will be out. Which reminds me, the upcoming one isn't being handled by Liarsoft. They might not be able to secure the licenses if they want to release any of the steampunk VNs made by Sakurai in the future. Well, this is all theoretical in the first place. Both. A story presents characters with roles the characters are supposed to fill. If you have a good story but bad characters, then it will be apparent that the above is the case. If you have bad story but good characters, then it will be clear that there exist barely any roles for the characters to fill. When you have a good story and good characters, only then will you be fully able to see the characters as an integral part of the story, while it's still not apparent that they are simply filling a role (VNs are generally terrible at this by choice, especially when it comes to moege)

You can't separate them - the characters drive the story, and the story is about the characters. If either is lacking your enjoyment will lack as well. If your story is weak, then you can't really do a good job of connecting the characters to the reader, as your medium for doing that is the story itself. If your characters are weak, they won't convey your story very well, and there's no need for the reader to care about them. Hence, you have to have both the story and characters have a certain amount of strength to them.

Well, ideally, they would both be good and complement each other. A story should be tied to the characters in some way. A character shouldn't just be a token, an object thrown into the story for the sole purpose of being there for you to gawk at. Visual novels like Comyu, for example, do this very well by having each main character actually play an active and important role in the story. All the characters are involved in some way in the overarching plot and while there are individual routes and each character has their own backstory, everything about the characters is only strengthened by their proactiveness in developing the plot. Of course this is not to say you can't have a bigger focus on one of them as individual elements. A visual novel that focuses a lot on character development can be good, but I don't think it will stand very well on its own feet if there's no supporting plot, and vice versa. For example, the visual novel Ikikoi, at least in my opinion, is a perfect example of why your sole focus shouldn't just be characters. It has an incredibly weak plot that doesn't seem to go anywhere and spends most of the time dealing with character interactions. Then once you get to a route, you still spend most of the time just working on character relationships and character build up, there's very little story behind the game, and that ends up causing, at least for me, a disconnection from the characters. I thought the characters could have had potential as individuals, but since there was no frame for them to fit in, they were just sort of there for me to pick from and interact with, and that just made the whole thing feel artificial. Most VNs tend to be character driven, so the weight ends up falling on how the characters are portrayed and developed, but I think a good story is also rather important, and I would say it is the most important, because in order to have a good story, you need to have good character development, they're not mutually exclusive. You could have a VN where all the characters are your ideal waifus, but if they don't stand on anything, then the game will just fall appart anyway.
