  1. So you have played your first visual novel game and finally arrived at the greatest moment in it: the h-scene. You have been faced with a difficult decision that will affect humanity.... in a way. The heroine is awaiting your decision, her eyes gleaming with excitement as she knows you are about to unleash your white minions. You are at your limit and you have to make this decision in the next 5 seconds or suffer the consequences... The question is where? You as a protagonist have a mission or missions (if you reload that save anyway): To be a responsible adult and not create an unnecessary life by pulling out your hyper weapon at the opportune moment because apparently it is the greatest contraception method in the visual novel world and then spray her like a busted fire hydrant OR Satisfy her fully: figuratively and literally by providing your love, warmth, and DNA even if she says "It's a safe day;" you don't believe in safe days or you are just too lazy or exhausted to pull out, so you remain inside. If you chose outside, despite covering the precious heroine with your essence and creating chaos made of white fluids all over the place, cleaning the whole place, even if it's the classroom, the rooftop, the library, the balcony or the church will be no problem, and you and the heroine will somehow manage to cleanse all the foul odors and pigments and smile at each other as if you've just robbed a bank without anyone noticing. Apparently you can use sorcery to block people's sense of smell so you and the heroine can totally walk around crowded streets without any suspicion. People who support the Way of the Outside are Ninja-class by default. If you chose inside, the heroine can never be become an expectant mother unless The P.L.O.T. demands it. The P.L.O.T. is more powerful than Jesus Himself. It can make babies appear or not appear with the heroine or the protagonist's will alone, so the protagonist can keep releasing inside 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, or 10 times without any problems. People may consider it "convenience", but I believe this is more of a miracle. "Inside" protagonists are also environment friendly, making sure the "predicament" can easily be wiped off with a single tissue as opposed to the wasteful "Outsiders" who require a dozen of them. People who follow the Way of the Inside are Hikikomori-class by default because they truly acknowledge that the inside is paradise and anything outside is corrupt, repulsive, and unacceptable. So once again, the ultimate question: inside or outside?

  2. Hey all! So I started noticing a lot of members recently posting about Japanese products (VNs, character goods) and where the best to buy these kinds of things are. I thought it would be sort of fun to make a video on my YouTube channel answering a lot of these questions, particularly when it comes to tapestries and the like. Check it out if you have some time: In other news, my life is now complete. The best girl alive is now in my room in all her life size glory:

  5. All the 3D girls are trash 2D all the way. You have seen the protag-kun!? : o You can also self-insert yourself to a protagonist that is not an empty shell. (or at least I can) Charage is a really wide "genre" are you sure you exactly know what charages are? I live to see cute 2D girls. I don't care about 3D

  7. Hello, I'm Amajor and I'd be willing to offer my services here, I have been making music for games for almost a year now and I'll be looking for new projects on this site. Here are some of the tracks I made already: I will be charging 1€ per fully mastered track and the tracks will also be completely exclusive to you and your game. I hope I will find some new and exciting projects on here

  8. Yeah right. If you want to read about good characters, charages are the way to go. No self-insertion at all. To actually answer OP's question: There are different types of beta-males. The type Vorathiel probably is too is the self-consciously type who knows too much about himself and his flaws that he can't fantasize anymore to be someone else. It irritates him to see a protag who does something he would never do. And it's especially irritating if protag gets the girls with being someone the reader could never be. If I were a beta-male, I would probably be this type too. Interestingly, Japanese otakus seem to be another type of beta. They don't have any self-consciousness left. They don't have any personality whatsoever and can assimilate everything they read as long as it's cool. That's why we have so many overpowered main characters although their target audience are socially retarded 3D-hetares. I don't think this type of otakuness is healthy and it's probably one of the reasons why animu and eroge are getting so bad.

  9. Inside. Until I read a visual novel where you get the choice and your protagonist is saddled with a kid, it's all inside. Besides, I don't want to miss out on the heroine panting, "Oh onii-chan, your cum, it's so warm. It's filling me up!"

  10. Unfortunately, many VNs completely fuck up romance in my opinion, by following a set, strict formula and compresses the crush phase into a matter of hours. Common routes usually take place over the course of a week, to maybe a month. Then, you enter a route, and 'OMG TRUE LOVE GAIZ!" I've really yet to see a VN that moves at a good, deliberate pace, building up two characters together so we see a relationship blossom in a far more believable manner. Clannad, should you choose to go down Nagisa's route pulls it off only due to After Story. The anime does a far better job in this sense, of creating a relationship where two characters grow together in a very real, believable manner and don't just fall in love because the story demands it. ef: A Tale of Melodies anime does this as well, through the use of a back story shared between two characters (but don't get me started on the other relationship of that season). I can't comment on the VN for that one though. So in short Mouse, there are no good romances in VNs.

  12. This. You can even break it down from the word itself. Chara- as in character. Duh! -rage as in from that emotion you feel because the heroine and the protag are not being logical and continue to drag the problem and drama instead of finding ways to solve it. Thus, do not read character if you hate "rage"ing on characters.

If you want VNs with yandere heroines, try this: 1- Duel Savior (gameplay-VN, has a pretty yandere heroine that will commit atrocities, though only in her route.) 2- Cross Channel 3- Both Fate and Tsukihime have one that could be described like that, though it's only a plot point in their route and it's an obsession that gets "resolved" so I'm not sure I'd call them that 4- Kimi to Kanojo to Kanojo to Koi (best one out of this list... Unfortunately, the only untranslated one of this list. If that's not a problem, go for it.) 5- Higurashi, too, I guess.

  17. How narrow-minded and limiting this question is. The true setup is obviously: Inside for vaginal sex, outside for oral and anal. Leaving it in is better for both participants to enjoy the afterglow and therefore more romantic. Cum on the other hand tastes awful though (as far as I was told), so I don't want to torture my fictional beloved any more than necessary, so oral is an outside job for me. Anal is something I don't want to do at all in the first place. But if I'm forced to, I can at least not make it sting when the lady has to use the toilet on the day after.

  18. Inside, because I prefer dealing with the eternal safe day than with the copious amounts of protagonist semen that pop up from time to time. It's like, holy shit, that guy just lost half his body weight with that cumshot.

  20. Here's a full run down on why this will destroy the world. First off, the term futanari has been widely recognized and used in the hentai community to define a human being with both a penis and a vagina. People from all over the globe have grown fond of this term by now. Then you have the term Shemale. A shemale is someone with boobs and a penis (no vagina). By forcibly translating the term futanari to Dickgirl, one is causing a possible confusion with the word shemale, because both terms have male and female parts. Shemale = She (female) male (male) Dickgirl = Dick (male) girl (female) This will hurt future generation of baka hentais who haven't seen the term futanari yet and are confronted with two terms that seem to describe the same exact thing. If one has to translate the term futanari, at the very least translate it properly to "hermaphrodite" so there's no confusion, or leave it as "futanari" because people who read hentai are all weebs to begin with and prefer it that way. This change deserves a worldwide state of emergency. THINK OF THE CHILDREN!!11!!1

  21. Key protagonists are the literal definition of not doing anything and being super useless (but nice) and getting every single woman to fall in love with you. Every Key protagonist also has the bumbling idiot friend who makes them look so much cooler than they actually are. They are the protagonists that never act on sex (because if men do that it's evil), thus showing ladies how it's done and then watching them become horny and proceed to consistently have sex until drama sets in. When drama comes up in a woman's life, they stand there pretending they can actually solve something. In the end, they do literally nothing and merely wait for the right opportunity to have an epic speech reminding their girlfriend that they will and have always loved them even though they [the woman] are insecure about themselves and don't believe it's possible to have such an awesome boyfriend. At this point, time leaps occur and some magic is sprinkled on and everything is perfect. The end.

  22. Welp, that was an interesting week, to say the least. I got 20 kB of text done on one day, and then I was pulling an all-nighter, and barely got 10 kB's of thext. Life works in strange ways, eh? Anyways, this weeks progress was rather decent progress done. I got a little under 60 kB's of text done, which is decent enough, and I'd like to keep the pace up. And thus I will now try to get at least 50 kB's of text done each week. With that amount of progress each week, this TL will be finished in about 3 months, which is fast enough for you guys. Also I did two H-scenes this week, which was... embarrassing to say the least. When I was translating these scenes, I felt so ashamed of my life descisions, but at the same time, they were kind of fun to translate. But still I prefer ordinary text over H-scene text, but I don't hate it, oddly enough. Update of the week: ————————————————————– Week 2: 83,0 kB/710 kB (11,7%) ————————————————————– I hope to see you again soon! - Arcadeotic https://euphemictranslation.wordpress.com/2016/01/23/update-2/

  28. Well I think that in a school setting, as I said, you're going to have some interaction with the girls. That interaction can be well or badly written, that's all. For example, Lucia from Rewrite - if you select her scenes, male lead interacts with her, but only as he decides to help her with personal issues (out of compassion, or so it seems) the relationship unfolds. In Period, well I played that a couple of years ago, but the characters where doing things all day (it's a school), so from the contact some feelings could arise. All in all, it's the type of game where a character comes at a point and downright asks you whom you like. Some heroines in that game are trickier to get. And well... I wish banging school staff was that easy. Oh, and another one comes to mind, in the indie game "deIZ" done by much loved Mike Einel, the main heroine is one you have to approach with your own tools. Try that, it's entertaining -but not your regular Japanese-made Japanese-taste game.

  41. Taste is very much in the eye of the beholder. To heart 2 - 9 romantic routes of the usual high school duration (2-3 months). All routes contain very different girls, though "conquering" is rather straight forward, but the protagonist behaves slightly differently to suit each route. Each route only has one (long) H scene close to the end.

  45. The whole can't be physical copy because the VN is too big is complete bullshit. They could easily spit the game into two discs (or whatever it is the vita uses) like they used to do for games in the past. This kickstarter has been one mistake after the other and honestly I've yet to back it because of it. Every time I get a slight inclination to maybe back at the 30 dollar tier they do something else to make me think this is just a mess. The fact they plan to get it out by March (unless I misread and they meant next year) means that it's quite obvious that the game is already complete or close to completion as far as translation goes. I am not quite sure why they are bothering with a kickstarter they could of sold the game normally and likely would have made over their goal by simply doing it that way. Sekai Project simply needs to learn to not announce a game as releasing with the "If the Kickstarter is successful". Japanese companies are trying to take advantage of Kickstarter. I backed the Libra Project primarily because of the fact it was a new game and by a studio trying to push into the market...they also had an extremely successful kickstarter both in tiers, feedback, reaching out to the community, etc... This has been the complete opposite. I would love to play Root Double but I am not going to be kickstarting it. If it makes Kickstarter then I'll pick the game up for 30 to 40 dollars upon successful release on PC. I have a theory that if (big if) the game has already had so much work done for it that they won't simply ignore trying to make back some of those funds and we'll see the game again with either a better kickstarter or as a normal release...that's assuming they've put any work into it. The only difference is they might release the game without voices to try and recuperate expected loss.

  47. Hi Guys, It's been a little over 24 hours since the end of the Kickstarter and I can honestly say that, part of me feels like I'm still on the "battlefield" when I should be celebrating with everyone. When I woke up this morning, just like every day, I went through my routine thoughts, racing as they do, about what needed to do be done with the remaining time. Then it hit me, Kickstarter was over! o.O The past 120 days -- every day -- have been filled with intense planning, ups/downs, execution of ideas, surprises (see James's KS celebration comment), and fun. For me personally, switching gears has been a little slower than expected, but I've got my foot on the clutch and easing in. The intensity won't change, just the lane. There's many steps left to take before Libra comes to a full completion and we're committed to seeing it through to the end. With that, I'd like to sincerely thank you for all the advice and feedback you've given. Fuwanovel has a great crowd. It's been a pleasure to make your acquaintance. I look forward to keeping you posted on our Libra progress, and also share what's on deck for future projects. You might even see me pop in a few off-topic threads, too. ;-) Until next time, Jonathan (MiKandi Japan PR/Marketing)

  48. A few things... you should get all the names - both place names and people names - perfectly transcribed in English letters before you do anything else. Also, I can tell just looking at that scene from my memories that the 'translation' is full of holes... I suggest you refrain from trying to translate a VN until you can reliably play one without the use of ATLAS or Google translate and be sure you are understanding what you are reading. I don't mean to be a bastard about it, but there is nothing more worthless for a game translation than a machine translation. It is perfectly fine to use the aid of jparser or Mecab to get around a limited grasp of kanji, but using an actual translation tool is a waste of time... Edit: I realize I sound like an a-hole above... but it is something someone would have pointed out at some point.

  49. Since my first post doesn't allow me to continue on it anymore because it's too lengthy, I'll add the FAQ here. I'll also add another guide from a fellow OELVN developer that is very interesting and that I advice reading as well! http://blog.cyanide-tea.net/2014/09/17/what-i-learnt-while-working-on-visual-novels/ 7°) FAQ a°) Should I start on a small or a big project? It’s probably the first question you should ask yourself. It is common sense and common belief that it's better to start to work on a smaller project in order to get experience, and once you feel more at ease, to take on a bigger project. While I can’t deny that it’s wiser to do this way, I can at the same time totally understand that some people might not satisfy themselves with a small project, and that they don't have the patience/time to take such a long detour. It’s definitely doable to attack a large scale project as your first project, but only to the condition that the person leading is someone that has very good common sense, and that is very organized. Hopefully, this guide should have given you the good foundations for handling and managing even big projects. It also depends on the time available to work on this project of each member of course. It is also an option to not set this in stone, and to go “We’ll see how much it will end up to be.” Take care though, don’t be too ambitious. Don’t try to aim for a game that will have 7 heroines and 100+ CG… (unless you genuinely believe that you have the team to do that). b°) How many member do I need? What is the ideal team to have? It really depends on the scale of your project. But you should at least have one person that can fill each role that I listed above. It is technically doable to create a Visual Novel with a 3 men team (a writer that can program, one artist that can draw everything, and a composer), even though I’d only recommend this for small scale projects. Else, my ideal team would be : One leader in charge of management in the team and PR (it can be a writer, but preferably if you have several writers working on your project). At least one writer (can also be the programmer if he has coding knowledge or if you don’t have a dedicated programmer) One sprites / CGs artist. One BG artist One composer One editor One programmer that can also create GUI assets. Depending on the size of your project, you might want to increase : The number of artists (sprites / CG / BG) The number of writers The number of composers. c°) I’m missing an *insert role* for my project, and I can’t seem to find one… It’s definitely annoying and an issue, but there always are possibilities to do without, at least most of the time. First, make sure that you searched enough. It’s necessary to be patient when recruiting, so don’t lose hope after merely one week of unfruitful recruitment. I don’t have a BG artist : I already stated different solutions above. I can’t find a composer : You can try to use free royalties track that are free of usage by everyone. Make sure to read the condition of utilisation first! (some tracks are not allowed to be used for commercial purposes, for example) I can’t find a programmer : Either learn to use ren’py yourself, or try to use alternative engines that requires fewer programming knowledge (there are a few out there, but development for them is often stalled) I can’t find a GUI artist : I’m not sure I can do anything to help you. Your best bet is to keep searching, and continue developing your project in the meanwhile. After all, GUI is not something vital for the development of your VN, and it can be done at any time. I can’t find a writer / artist : Sorry, but you are screwed^^ ...more seriously, make sure that the problem isn’t coming from your recruitment messages / your VN concept that are not appealing enough. d°) My project is stalling! No progress is being made! HEEEEEELP MEEEEE! This issue can come from two different things : either your organization is not good enough, or either your members lack motivation. It might not seem very obvious at first glance but the purpose of organization is to spare doing additional efforts for all the people working on the project. Make it easier to get started on work, and to share it with other people. Writers are not writing? Maybe you should help them to plan out the content that they are supposed to write. Artists are not drawing? Maybe because they don’t know where to find the references for this character they are supposed to draw. Make the information easily accessible (thanks to Trello, Google Drive, and Skype pms), and you will see that people will be much more active!^^ If your members lack motivation, it’s another problem altogether. First, did you follow the advices above? Yes? It doesn’t seem to have been very efficient? Well, once again, don’t underestimate the importance of bonding and creating bonds with your fellow teammates. The next thing that can help is : is your project interesting enough? Do the members see potential in what they are creating? If they do, they’ll be definitely more motivated to work on it. If they don’t, it’s your job to propose new ideas to improve the quality of your project and get your members more hyped than ever. If your project is a commercial one, things are different since the people that you hire have the duty to furnish enough progress, they are paid after all. Creating something through the internet is a problem in a way that you can’t create and make people sign real contracts. So no one has any legal obligation toward you. But as a project leader, you are the one managing the funds and the money, so you are on your right to not give money until enough progress has been made. d°) I have a member that only brings troubles to the others… What should I do? Well sometimes it happen that you made an error of judgement, and recruited someone that revealed himself to be a troublemaker. It’s the job of the project leader to blow the whistle and to ask politely, but firmly that you don’t like the recent behavior of this member, and that if it were to continue, you’d have to kick him out. If that person doesn’t try to change his behavior, it’s your duty to kick that person, no matter how important he might be among the team (even if it’s your main writer) e°) One of the member is not good enough / not putting enough effort into the project… It’s very similar to what I said previously. If it happens that not enough effort are made : calmly explain the situation in a message to the person concerned. Never try to guilt trip the member, and don’t attack him personally. Listen to what he has to say and explain clearly what you’re expecting from him. Warn him in a friendly tone. If it doesn’t improve, warn him more firmly and give an ultimatum. If nothing has changed after some time again, it means it’s time to demote/kick that person. If the person is just not good enough, first you need to blame yourself because that’s probably the result of you recruiting someone without testing that person enough. Now, there’s no real rule about how to handle this, it mainly depends on what are your values. Do you think it’s okay to be unfair to someone and kick that person if that means a higher overall quality for the project? There’s no real answer that is right or wrong imo. f°) I’m suffering from writer’s block! First, did you make sufficient planning? One of the possible cause of writer’s block is having only vague ideas or concept, and trying to write a real script from those right away. The most planning (in the details!) you do, the easier it will be for you to write. Don’t hesitate to ask help with people to brainstorm ideas as well. Secondly, sometimes writer’s block might just be you being a perfectionist. Like, you’re refusing to write bad or “meh” writing, and want to create something great on your first try. It’s not exactly the best way to go when writing, sometimes you must compromise and accept to write lesser quality stuff / fillers, and come back to it later. Because when you’re blocked on something, sometimes the best thing to do is just to write another scene and come back to this one later. Here is a nice article from one of our Fuwa fellow that might help you! https://forums.fuwanovel.net/index.php?/topic/8258-writers-block-combating-it/#entry220082 g°) Some members are arguing badly about something, and I’m not sure how to intervene… It is something that is meant to happen at some point, arguments, more or less serious, will always happen. You have to know how to deal with them as a project leader : Tell people to stay respectful and polite. It’s fine to not agree on something, or to be pissed at someone (we’re all human beings), but people have to stay respectful with each other, all the time. Try to make sure there is no misunderstanding between the two members. You’d surprised to see how many arguments happen because people misunderstand each other. Have them state clearly what the problem is, on each side. Try to compromise. Try to find a solution that both party will find acceptable, and that everyone will agree with. And finally, when everything is solved, no ill feelings! h°) Will money guarantee me to reach completion of my VN safely? Is a kickstarter a better approach overall? To be honest, no. Keep in mind that having a project where you're ready to pay people only facilitate the recruitment : it allows you to choose among a larger number of possibilities. Of course, if you pay the people working on your VN more or less regularly, it will be a motivating factor for some of them. But it won't prevent drop of interest for the project, boredom, mistakes, conflicts (if anything, involving money might bring more conflicts on the table). Money cannot replace passion. It's a tad different if you're hiring someone full time to work on your VN and that they depend on your money to make a living. If that's the case, you can expect the person to work with more professionalism on the project, since that person really needs the money. But again, you probably don't have any signed contract between each other (even if you had, if doesn't hold much value), so you have probably no way to do anything if someone decides to retire himself for the project for whatever reason. Now about kickstarters, keep in mind that it's a double edged sword. You might want to take a look at this blog article about the failure of the second kickstarter of Dysfunctional Systems, I encourage every people that want to start a Kickstarter to read it : https://dischan.co/blog/2015/01/dysfunctional-systems-what-went-wrong/ (and additionaly an more in-depth analysis of the failure of Dysfunctional Systems : http://traumendes-madchen.com/blog/?p=1142) Here is basically the moral of the story : People will have paid for your promises, and you will have to keep your commitments : you are not allowed to lie to the people that backed you and betray them. Managing money requires a lot of work : a lot of planning, a lot of common sense, and most of all to be very careful. It's not something meant to make the development of your game easier, it can be as beneficial as it can be toxic for your project. If you don't have a good sense of how to value money, it's very easy to get overly ambitious because you're seeing a nice amount of money under your eyes. When starting a kickstarter, you're basically engaging yourself to release a product in the end, whether you want it or not. Meaning that if ever you feel that the project becomes a burden to you because you don't have enough motivation, or if real life stuff happens (it sucks, but it can happen to anyone). If ever despite of that, you decide that the VN cannot reach completion, be ready to give back the money to your backers, or face eternal shame and discredit on yourself. Most of the time, you won't have any money from the kickstarter left, so be prepared to refund people on your personal savings. Now, more generally, I'll have to add that commercial projects and free projects tend to have different mindsets when it comes to creation of a Visual Novel. When you're dealing with a commercial VN, the developers will always be to some extent worried about the sales of the game. That might influence how they create their stories (trying to appeal to a bigger audience), or how they react to other's people reviews / complain /criticism. They also have additional pressure in the form that they have to prove that what they created is worth the price for the reader. They have to deal with frustration and expectations from the people that bought their VN. It's definitely not the case for free VN. They have much more freedom, in a sense, since they are not tied by any expectations of any form, at least morally speaking. If the reader is not happy with the VN created, it's much harder for him to complain as the only thing he will have lost will be time (Time might still be very valuable for some people though). Don't misunderstand though, I'm not saying people shouldn't complain about reading something that is free because they didn't have to pay for it. I'm just saying that the creators have no moral obligation to change anything or do anything about it. i°) WE MADE IT! OUR PROJECT IS READY FOR RELEASE! ...but where can I distribute my VN in order to share it with the world? Steam : always a good place, especially if you want to sell your VN. Lemmasoft : it’s at least a good place to advertise it Fuwanovel : A good place to advertise it as well Mangagamer is a good bet as well, although I’m not sure if they are interested in distributing OELVN. You can try also to get your game distributed in various site that promote indie games, such as http://gamejolt.com/ , http://itch.io/ , http://www.indiedb.com/ (the links are a courtesy from firecat) If you have any question, or need any guidance for creating your own Visual Novel, don't hesitate to pm me, I'll be glad to help!
