SP had a livestream today where they answered a bunch of questions from their forums and stream chat. I'll list off the highlights: 1) Uncensored/uncut Maitetsu release: This was like the third question asked. "We definitely have something to announce by Anime Expo or sooner, we're just working out the logistics." I doubt the announcement they're hyping up will be "lol steam only." They recognized that it's controversial content, but said "we're working on it." "The intent is to bring Maitetsu over as best we can." 2) Kokonoe Kokoro (oh god why): engine issues are holding it back. 3) Dovac's favorite game of all time is Final Fantasy 8. wtf. 4) G-senjou 18+ version: akabeisoft just doesn't seem to like it? SP proposed it but got shot down. 5) One of the biggest takeaways of the stream is that if you want something, just ask for it. Post about it on SP's forums, try to rally others to support the thread, that kind of thing. Japanese companies tend to need strong evidence of fan desire before they act on something. Basically, my interpretation of this is that instead of just sitting on some dark corner of the internet calling them idiots and criminals, actually attempting to open a dialogue and trying to reach out to the people making the decisions is a million times more effective at making a difference. 6) Tenshin Ranman: "It's just sitting there." 16% translated, they want it to get further before they start promoting it. 18+ maybe. My interpretation is that they seem to be stretched a bit thin and simply haven't really started that in earnest yet. 7) Wagamama High Spec: One guy said that 18+ version is going to happen and there will be more info at Anime Expo, another said that it's still in discussion. The developer seems interested in pushing the all-ages version first and foremost, in order to cross-promote with the anime (which will obviously not be 18+). 8 ) Chrono Clock: Only about 10% done. They didn't have the engine code and had to do extensive assembly hacking to get it to work right in English. 9) Other Unison Shift titles: Focusing on Ley Line for now. They only just announced it and seem to still be working out the particulars of the deal. Flyaaabbleee Heaaarrttt. 10) Grisaia no Meikyuu: As their latest KS update indicates, engine differences are causing the 18+ version to be postponed, and some of the 18+ content is still being translated. It will lag a month or so behind. 11) Root Double: They can't say much, it's "complicated," they're working on it, Soon™. 12) Console versions: They have Vita and PS4 devkits, they're working on some console versions (no word on if that extends beyond the KS stretch goals they've met). Very often, console versions of VNs are published by different companies than the original creators of the PC versions, and require you to either establish seperate licensing deals which may not be possible, or do the ports themselves, which they presumably don't have infinite skilled manpower for. 3DS has weird software limitations. 13) Someone basically asked about Kindred Spirits and Gahkthun being on steam and if that will influence to SP re-evaluating their censorship policies. So, the transcript SP provides basically shuts down the question and says that they have their own guidelines they'll follow, but the stream got into a lot more detail. Essentially, they've taken notice of Gahkthun getting rated by the ESRB and releasing on Steam, and said that they're looking into that route, but it could also backfire if they rate a game AO and suddenly Sony is asking questions about whatever console ports they may be working on. They also said that in general, they've been relaxing the content guidelines a lot in recent times. Whereas before Sakura Spirit was scandalous, now it seems rather mundane. They said they have some possible controversial content coming to Steam in the future. 14) Alternative pricing models: A "recent example of bad DLC segmentation" (Sharin no Kuni) is something they wouldn't ever willingly do. In the case of G-Senjou no Maou, the voiced/unvoiced versions was something AkabeiSoft2 thought would really help, and the buying habits for that title seemed to have somewhat reinforced that belief. According to them, it used to be an even more drastic split and SP had to talk them down. AkabeiSoft seems to really like doing that kind of feature segmentation.13 points

Sekai Project's Q&A has come to cement the fact that it is AkabeiSoft that prefers a modular approach, not necessarily Frontwig. With this in mind, I once again redirect any individuals against this business practice to the current facts: Non integral (if you want to be picky, then yeah, this is up for debate) parts of the Visual Novel will be removed and be sold as DLC at a fraction of the price. Think CG and Music galleries. Currently, on Prefundia, it is stated one will be able to attain the full game by backing the project for a mere 20 dollars. This considerably reasonable given the current pricing standards of visual novels of this kind. Having established this, and back to the DLC situation, there are currently two possible options that are theorized: OPTION A The game will sell at the current Western market norm* for a visual novel of this calibre (about 40-50 dollars), after which you can, for an added amount, buy the DLC. The total amount will be higher than the current western market standard. This is the "moneygrab" option most people fear with no evidence. In fact, so far as theorizing goes, one could even say there's evidence against this: AkabeiSoft's previous officially released Visual Novel, "G-Senjou no Maou" also offered DLC. The game could be bought at a markedly reasonable price with no voices (about 20 dollars), or include them as DLC for the standard VN price of about 40 dollars. I do understand that, setting this precedent may later down the line lead to bad practices. See the western market. OPTION B The game will sell at a cheaper price than the current standard (less then 40 dollars), after which you can, for an added amount, buy the DLC. The total amount should equal the current western market standard. This is the more reasonable approach some individuals are hoping for. If G-Senjou has set any sort of precedent, this is the approach AkabeiSoft, and therefore Frontwig, will opt for. Until the pricing is out, I believe that any accusations of moneygrabs and removing essential VN components are entirely baseless. I, for one, am always welcome to more competitors in the localisation scene. ---- Regarding the matter of H-Scenes, Sekai Project claims AkabeiSoft is not interested in bringing them to the west. I won't try to bend your principles if you're against censoring VN's, but sometimes the localisation company is simply not to blame. *VN's like CLANNAD, Grisaia and G-Senjou set the norm for VN's of this size, quality and renown on Steam. This is, of course, debatable.4 points -

Okay, I'm almost good. Now, please understand that if this negativism and general baseless preconceptions weren't up in the air then I'd bet neither Rooke, nor sanahtlig, nor I would have raised our flags in their name. This whole "defending" movement is a direct response to the pointless pessimism. I wouldn't call it hypocritical, I'd call it counterarguing: I present a valid hypotisis. It is just as valid as yours. There is no evidence either way. Why are you immediately jumping to the conclusion everything is bad and evil when there's other valid and sound hypotises?3 points -

I appear to have failed to convey my intent. By providing another prespective I'm attempting to showcase that there are other options and that one should, therefore, not take any given side. It may be confusing how it appears I'm taking a side with the intent of showing how we are not at a point where we should take sides. Never once have I said your point of view is invalid. I said it was baseless, just as baseless as mine, but they are both equally valid. Given the lack of evidence we should, then, not take any given side, because both are baseless, although valid and possible. Okay... How to better explain it? You say Frontwing is evil incarante, I say they are the saviours of VN's in the West. Both are equally possible given what we know now: They could be trying to come up with a new and innovative business model... Or they could be trying to rob us blind. What I'm trying to do, is point out the former is also possibility, and how one should therefore not jump to conclusions with the latter, as many were doing. I am decidedly not telling you to believe Frontwing is trying to do good, I'm telling you that since they could be, hold on to your hate until there's evidence either way.2 points -

Hopefully dovac realizes that visual novel fans are not going to pay for a game twice and those who want an 18+ version are not going to support an all ages version. Hopefully they release them simultaneously so they can accurately see the difference in sales. By releasing an all ages version and then an adult version months later it would not be giving them accurate information. Even people that originally had an interest will likely just find other things to buy if they wait too long in between the all age and 18+ release. At least they're talking in a better direction hopefully at the next convention they actually discuss 18+ titles and hopefully this isn't just talking out the ass for PR. The saying goes actions speak louder than words...let's wait and see. As for wagamama anime it sucks. So hopefully they don't try to appeal to the western market in the hopes the anime actually does well. They'd be better off targeting 18+ simply because the amount of people watching and actually giving a damn for wagamama is minute compared to almost any other anime this season. It doesn't help that most anime fans do not give a shit about shorts.2 points -

They’re not removing the visual part of the novel, nor are they removing anything integral to the game - the experience of playing through the story doesn’t change once the CG gallery is removed. Sorry, but at best it's a desired extra.2 points -

50 translated VNs you should read before you die
Pantsuhelm reacted to Kaguya for a topic
This list won't feature the VNs in order of "how good they are". Rating them would be way too much of a clusterfuck to me. The VNs are not in their respective order. Meaning number 1 is not the best, and so on. 1_CHAOS; HEAD 2_Cross Channel 3_G-Senjou no Maou 4_Fate/Stay Night 5_Forest This Visual Novel is the easiest visual novel translated to get a bad ending without using a walkthrough- which just adds to the fun of it. It makes a massive amount of references to common literature, which makes it even better. 6_Katahane It may seem like an ordinary moege- the atmosphere is light, the story is full of cuteness, which you can note by the character design and soundtrack. It gets really good in the middle, and you'll be dying to know what happens in the end. A game with multiple perspectives, it's definitely one of the most enjoyable Visual Novels I've ever read. 7 Majikoi 8_Little Busters! 9_Tsukihime "You shouldn't tell lies that you can't even fool yourself with" 10_Swan Song A post apocalyptic Visual Novel. 11_Symphonic Rain It may seem like your ordinary moege. Trust me, it's not. 12_Sharin no Kuni, Himawari no Shoujo (and sequel) 13_Sekien no Inganock Steampunk. An atmosphere full of mysteries and references that will make your head blow up. 14_Steins; Gate A visual novel that deals extensively with time travel and it's consequences. 15_Utawarerumono 16_Fault: Milestone (1 & 2) 17_Higurashi no Naku Koro Ni 18_Kara no Shoujo 19_Umineko no Naku Koro ni 20_Planetarian 21_Ever 17 Another top 10. 22_Remember11 It lacks in the ending, but otherwise the story of this VN has enough to easily become one of my all-time favorites. 23_Zanmataisei Demonbane 24_Rewrite "Could it possibly be rewritten, this fate of hers?" Another one that enters the top 10. 25_Narcissu 26_Grisaia no Kajitsu 27_Saya no Uta Only if you enjoy dark and messed up settings. 28_Higanbana no Saku Yoru ni 29_Eien no Aselia 30_Rose Guns Days (1 & 2) There are small sections of gameplay on this one, but you can skip them by pressing the space bar, so this still qualifies. 31_Sengoku Rance I feel obliged to comment on this VN before suggesting it to anyone. It's an Alicesoft title, which speaks a lot for itself... If you don't know how it's going to be like, well.. Kind of tough to describe. Lots of sex, including comedy rape. Alicesoft tends to make the whole story a comedy until right near the end, where things actually do get serious. It's worth checking out, if you don't mind Rance's personality. 32_Phenomeno Want a short VN that can captivate you for their whole duration? Here is it. Visual novel adapted from the youth horror novel written by Hajime Ninomae and illustrated by yoshitoshi ABe. 33_Ef- A Fairy Tale of the Two 34_Dysfunctional Systems Another one great for those who want short Visual Novels. 35_Daibanchou Another Alicesoft title. While Rouga is not near Rance's level when it comes to pissing off people, alicesoft's style is something which often doesn't please people. 36_Yume Miru Kusuri The endings pack quite a punch. 37_Kikokugai- The Cyber Slayer 38_Eden 39_Hoshizora no Memoria 40_Katawa Shoujo Yep, it's somewhat overrated. Still, the fact that it is substantially easier for those who are starting to play visual novels to read should not be discarded, and overall, the story was good. 41_World End Economica 42_YU-NO 43_Shikkoku no Sharnoth Yep, there is a minigame on this one. If you download a save data you can skip the minigame, though. So it still qualifies. Another VN that enters my top 10. 44_Muv Luv Alternative The first Muv Luv didn't have enough to enter this list. You should still read it, though~ MLA is definitely awesome. 45_Dangan Ronpa 46_Comyu - Kuroi Ryuu to Yasashii Oukoku 47_Hanachirasu 48_Ayakashibito 49_I/O 50_Deardrops1 point -

Sanah and Rooke already got to it, but I don't mind them offering a version with less features. I feel like this all depends on the price breakdown. So long as the full version costs about the same as other VNs of the type, it's a pretty good thing that they're also making a version that'll sell for people who don't want the features that were excluded from the full one. I saw the argument that it'll set a bad precedent for the future, but even then, so long as the pricing is fair, I don't really mind it. Who am I to judge if someone wants to buy G-Senjou and only read Haru's route for half the price? (it's actually a pretty good idea, given how generally worthless the other routes in that game are. But I digress.) If they offer an imcomplete version for a high price and then offer the previous content as DLCs for even more money then I can see people getting pissed, though. And the argument related to being pessimistic or optimistic with this is silly and I won't get into it.1 point

My understanding of the viewpoint at large is "removing features and selling at lower price = paying to unlock content that's already on the disk". People don't like the practice. The backlash has nothing at all to do with actual prices or market outcomes. They simply don't like it because it's similar to practices that have been used by unscrupulous companies in the past who are more interested in their bottom line than providing value to their customers.1 point -

You are such a pretentious person. Are you so insecure that you must belittle anyone with an opposing viewpoint? I get why they are doing it. They think they will make more money and appeal to more people. But it still makes no sense, whatsoever to call the original version the deluxe version when they are cutting a gallery for assets already in the game and the gallery is already done. And this isn't even a bid to be on steam because there won't be an H patch. This is just insane to me. No where did I say anyone is being ripped off, but good to see you're also in the business of shoving words into my mouth.1 point -

Some players/readers have already expressed concern at the removal of integral VN segments like the galleries. For the sake of their own profit, and of consumer choice, two versions are the optimal way, depending on their pricing. Not a single consumer loses, and people like you, who may or may not find such content disposable, get the VN for cheaper. AkabeiSoft seem intent on VN segmentation for what I would assume are the reasons sanah's already pointed out, either way, that's why something had to be cut out. EDIT: A friendly reminder that this argument is entirely hypothetical. We don't yet know the pricings.1 point -

What you are describing is most definitely a cash grab, and not at all what we've put forth as a possibility: what if, instead of paying more more for those features, you paid exactly the same, but had the possibility of paying less for a version without them? What if you were given an option to pay less for a version with said content removed? Mind, I said option. You would still be able to buy the full, or what they are calling deluxe, version for the same, standard price as any other VN of its calibre. Merely a possibility, but one people have been refusing to acknowledge. Regarding content removal... yes. Let's take this to another realm. See games. Imagine Left4Dead. Imagine you were able to buy the game normally as you are... But that you also had the opportunity to buy a version with only single player for a reduced price. Certainly, the developers are removing content from the game to sell as DLC (in which the value of cheaper game +DLC=Normal game price), but this is actually benficial for the consumer. A player in unique circunstances, like with a beyond flimsy internet, would have no use for the multiplayer, hence he pays less. As much as you may think removing multiplayer in that sort of game is asinine, it's an extra choice for the consumer. So, yes. In extraordinary circunstances, I'm fine with the developer removing content to sell separately. Prices and circunstances are everything. This discussion is only pointless if the arguments aren't coming through, and from your post, I fear that's possible.1 point -
What's weirder, Frontwing deciding to make a DLC/deluxe version out of shit nobody cares about anyway, or people arguing about it (I can't even imagine on why and don't count on me reading everything) for four pages? I think its a fucking stupid idea and sets a bad precedent that I would rather not see in the future. The reason it pisses me off is the simple fact that the CG gallery, and sound modes are essentially free. That shit is already in the VN. If the version without those two things is cheaper, why? Why isn't the full version then cheaper? The music and art are already in the game.1 point -

Rooke, sanahtlig, and Tiago all believe that Front Wing has a right to remove content from the game that others view as being an integral part of the visual novel. Some of us believe it's a cash grab and dishonest business practice that Front Wing is essentially telling us to pay more money for a feature we already would have expected as it was in the original game to begin with. None of it matters; the project will still be funded in 10 days or less because weebs love anime and visual novels. After it's funded, people will still bitch about the game removing the 18+ content, and this pointless cycle will start all over again. No matter what game you put on Kickstarter, if it's a popular fan translated novel, people will fund it. If it's a cute moege (i.e. = Pulltop games, Yuzusoft games), people will fund it. If it's a yuri game that either has a good story or an actual artist who is involved in a circle at Comiket, people will fund it. If it's an otome, it will fail because gay dudes are gross. OELVNs will always be written like Shakespeare because high school protagonists are all geniuses like Yuuji and Kenichi, and the h-scene discussion will always result in debate. The fandom will never change, so this discussion is pointless. Sharin no Kuni is my favorite visual novel of all time, but even I know this won't go anywhere. Finished my first playthrough! The final boss was pretty hype, but I was so sure that the game was still deceiving me in some way and so I only realized it was the final boss after beating it. Talk about anti-climax... I don't think anything can beat the magical feeling of playing the PC Dark Souls 1 for the first time, when everything was new and exciting, and when even the community felt more tightly knit and obscure, but still DkS3 is the most fun I've had with Souls-games in a while. It plays better than ever, be it bosses, online and just levels themselves. The progression through the game stays steadily difficult and varied, exploring is fun and rewarding and it's just overall really well built experience. Maybe little too linear for me, but that's just a minor complaint. I think I'll continue randomly playing Dark Souls III, trying to find things I missed earlier and mess around in PVP.1 point -

I simply realize that one can't understand an industry without understanding the perspectives of both consumers and producers. I actually put forth the effort to listen to both sides and try to see the world as they do. Many VN fans only care about their own perspective as consumers. That's fine, but you're not qualified to comment in any sort of objective manner if you can't see perspectives other than your own--and if I made a habit of doing that no one would ever take me seriously. You imply that I'm arrogant to search for valid justifications for a company's actions rather than simply assume they're greedy, incompetent, or both when companies do something that triggers us as consumers. If I'm arrogant, I suppose that means anyone in this discussion who thinks they know how to run a business better than Frontwing--who I daresay have more experience at this--must be arrogant as well. With that out of the way, Rooke already nicely pointed out how the substance of your argument (the part that isn't just a personal attack on me) is utterly ridiculous.1 point -

I have the same issue too, if it's loose or even in a generic case the chances of me forking out the cash for it plummets. I even shake cases to make sure the manual is inside, must look like quite the weirdo to the employees. Having pieced together a few sets separately before, I can definitely say it was ten times more frustrating than going for a complete set. (I'm not paying ten bucks shipping on a manual I'm paying a dollar for, Dammit!) Luckily, in the area where I live quite a few people save the cases at least. For the particular games you're looking for I don't think you'll have any issues finding them complete even in local stores (especially the PS3 titles) since the majority of them are pretty common titles. Unless of course, gamers in your area have something against game cases/manuals and constantly throw them out. Now if that's the case my heart goes out to you. Relying solely on the online retailers would drive me crazy, I've heard so many horror stories where a game is listed as "like new", but when it arrives the disc is full of scratches. There was a storefront on either Amazon or Ebay that offered to print backup covers and manuals for games; I never used them myself though so I can't guarantee their quality. Another thing you know if you end up getting any loose games/ games with broken cases, is that it's fairly easy to find blank replacement cases for any system after the PS1, except for PSP. Well, it depends on your taste. I'd say if you like upbeat, lively, girls singing to their hearts content--Love Live songs are awesome! There are also some that have heavy metal added to the mix, or some like dance club music. I should know, I've been a hardcore Love Liver ever since they aired...plus, many man-tears were shed during the Final Love Live and anime....even today when people make feels pics of School Idol. Some would argue that IdolMaster is better, but it all depends on your taste. Listen to a couple of songs in YouTube, especially the most famous one's like Snow Halation and Sunny Day Song(best 2 out of all in my opinion), but there are tons of amazing ones out there as well! And here, http://hikarinoakariost.info/ I think they have all, if not, almost all, the Muse's albums there. When a link doesn't work, just refresh it or come back after a few hours or a day. I hope you'll enjoy the songs by Muse! I know I did. Still not sure about the Aquors though... P.S. Try using SoundCloud instead of Spotify. That's just it. No one outside the fanbase can understand why fans are annoyed at the existence of a lower-priced version with features removed--a version which isn't even being offered to Kickstarter backers. Frontwing wants to sell to people who will only buy VNs at low prices, but also sell to traditional fans at higher prices. I don't see why this is so hard to understand. Note that this is EXACTLY how the adult/non-adult version differentiation is used to milk the traditional fanbase while still appealing to those who don't want to pay $40 for a text game. There's no plans for an adult version, so they had to find a different way to accomplish the desired price differentiation. Artificial product differentiation is very common. In the PC hardware market, companies will disable functionality at the hardware level simply to create a lower-priced version. Let me repeat: they'll irreversibly sabotage their own product simply to split the product into two price categories.1 point -

My problem with Charlotte is not episode 6 but what happens afterwards. I was getting tired of the "bad guy of the week" vibe from the previous episodes and got super hype after episode 6. And then got horribly, HORRIBLY disappointed. Just when I thought the series was going to pick up, it did a nose dive. And then another, and then once more just to round out the season.... If my sources (which are basically hearsay mind you) are to be believed, Meada's allotted time to work with got cut in half. Charlotte could have been like many other Key works. Starting out with several slice of life episodes in the beginning to get you to like the characters, eventually culminating into a twist with a big bang at the end. Instead... well you'll see for yourself.1 point -

Sharin no Kuni and G-Senjou no Maou both have beyond capable protagonists. The former has one where being superior is quite literally his job.1 point -
Anime with ultimately satisfying endings

Added railgun. I remember enjoying Index as well, but didn't recall having that ultimately satisfied feeling at the end, but it was also a long time ago.1 point -
We are just joking because of that particular image which is just extremely shocking, nothing more nothing else. I haven't even read it so I cannot criticize it and I'm sure many of us here haven't read it either. I thought that underlined phrase was going to be a link. I'm disappointed.1 point

Welcome to the world of VNs. Private nurse was pretty shit. See: https://vndb.org/v64 I'd suggest looking elsewhere, and comparing ratings on vndb.org. If a lot of people have rated the game it's a reliable indicator about how good it is. As for good VNs with sex scenes... just about all good VNs contain sex scenes. There are plenty of good recommendations you can get from previous posts - see the http://forums.fuwanovel.net/topic/2151-50-translated-vns-you-should-read-before-you-die/ thread. Most of those contain sex.1 point
