Sanahtlig "upgrades" to Windows 10: A Diary
sanahtlig reacted to DharmaFreedom for a topic
I was thinking of upgrading to windows 10 then i realized why? I use my laptop for work, general use and Vn's. Its fully set up to my preferences and everything works great . I ended up deciding on sticking to and not messing with or changing something that already works great for me. Plus the hardcore mode spying scares me . I mean its not like i'm doing anything bad online [just a regular user], just the thought of this Windows violating your privacy like no other windows before kind of creeps me out. I rather be safe than sorry i guess. Well i do admit i can get pretty paranoid over these things . Well since everyone's stating their opinions on the matter, that's my 2 cents! Godspeed on your voyage @sanahtlig. Thanks for offering your thoughts about the OS as you go forward with it. If i buy a new laptop, i could use this as reference.1 point -

After Sakura Dungeon, I'm not going to instantly assume it's bad. I'll play if first, then say it's bad I really hope they have improved even more since dungeon, as that was actually a decent game. So yeah, let's hope this one actually does some good things as well.1 point

One other thing to consider: you can upgrade to reserve your free copy, but you don't necessarily have to use it. This will be useful if you need to update without having to pay. Microsoft won't support Win7 forever, so you'll wanna be prepared for that eventually. http://www.howtogeek.com/263413/you-only-have-a-week-left-to-get-windows-10-free.-heres-why-you-should-update/1 point -

From personal experience buying cloth from Japan is that you know your exact sizes in centimeters and then you look around after something similar. It is different depending on what manufacturer and company you are buying from too. A Totoro shirt could be different depending on who produced it. But overall it was decent sizing compared to Europe (Sweden). if you are medium a large was good in my case and I haven't had any problems ordering a medium even though it was a bit tight. So my suggestion would be order one size larger than what you wear today. But I can't answer what the US standard is sadly.1 point

You couldn't stomach Kara no Shoujo but ask for dreary vn's with themes of desperation and mindfuck? Tsk tsk It's like the lightest kind of stuff you can get in that department I'd recommend some titles, but I doubt you'd be able to read them.1 point

1. As long as everything else is working, those unknown devices shouldn't be a major issue. 2. The fix for Duel Savior might be applicable here too, but that remains to be seen. 4. You may consider changing the default Sans-serif font in Chrome to work around the iffy font rendering. Go into Chrome's settings, Show advanced settings, find the "Web content" section and click "Customize fonts" -- for the Sans-serif font, choose a font that definitely handles Japanese such as Meiryo, MS UI Gothic, or Yu Gothic1 point -

Eh? I honestly can't see hardly any difference if any at all. Between putting a older vn in fullscreen mode and between using a VM to rescale the window. I imagine they use the same upscaling/zoom. For newer vn's with actual good support for upscaling the difference is huge ofc.1 point

Playing Yumina the Ethereal. I am, quite surprisingly (or perhaps just the opposite) enjoying the combat a great deal. Reminds me to an extent of Phoenix Wright, I suppose... Haha. The style of humour is actually very compatible with me, so I can say I'm enjoying everything thus far. Furthermore, I should add that complicated as they may seem, I've mostly grasped the battle systems without any real messing up or struggle, so there's that, @Eclipsed.1 point -

Why do lots of VNs still run at such low resolutions?
sanahtlig reacted to ChaosRaven for a topic
I'm pretty sure I read in one of MangaGamers blogs (probably one of Doddlers) that eroge artists were used to draw their original art assets in a resolution twice as high as the title will be released. However, considering that titles like G-Senjou no Maou, Clannad or Akagoei Trinity got high-res versions years later, it's certainly possible to release them with a bigger size. Provided that the Japanese know the existence of compressed image formats like PNG or JPEG, size also shouldn't really matter. But since most VN studios use standard engines, I wouldn't be surprised if the size restriction was an engine constraint.1 point -

looking for horror/psychological VN's
Onodera Punpun reacted to Silvz for a topic
You have to read Higurashi no Naku Koro Ni and its "sequel" Umineko no Naku Koro Ni. Also, from the same author, Higanbana, which are 14 small horror stories placed in a Japanese school. You can try Cartagra, Kara no Shojo and Kara no Shojo 2 [it is a series], which are not horror, but there are many different murders, some gore and an incredible detective story. They are just amazing, you won't want to miss it! For the psychological part, I recommend the Infinity series [Never7, Ever17 and Remember11] and also Zero Escape series [all from the same creator]. They both have three games each and the Infinity ones are full VNs while the ZE is a mix of VN and gameplay. They are shocking as hell, if I may add that. I'm gonna put some links here to help you: https://vndb.org/v7576 - Higanbana [they are 2 games, 7 stories in each] https://vndb.org/v24 - Umineko Cartagra - https://vndb.org/v515 Kara no Shojo 1 - https://vndb.org/v810 Never7 - https://vndb.org/v248 as for the ZE series, they're gonna be released on Steam soon!1 point -

Higurashi and House in Fata Morgana maybe? Also you could try Cross Channel for physiological and Kikokugai (Pick remake version if you want voice) if you want to see VN from anti villain viewpoint (Also same writer as Saya no Uta). Hope it'll help. PS - Is Maou from G-Senjou really popular for avatar choice here? Last time there's another new user (Dfbreezy) using Maou avatar for a while and also old user (Kingdomcome) using Maou as current avatar here. Just saying.1 point -
I just came across this. And I'm HYPED as hell. Premise: looks soooo interesting! Also - ALL AGES! Voice acting! Beautiful backgrounds, just look at those non-spoiler samples: And details of few characters. I was affraid it will fall into genric tropes category, but it somehow, slightly, but still, avoided that. Even this childhood friend looks interesting, despise her looking like she has no brain at all. So - typical moe girl. And (poorly) animated, lightly spoilerish PV (presentation video?) I wish I could to unwatch this, so proceed with caution. Also, art: And silhouetes of full (?) cast: And some random CGs: Also, they're implementing thing I saw only in Tsukihime and loved it very much. Lightning that affects sprites: What else? Bad news - this will be a multi-part release. :<1 point

looking for horror/psychological VN's
Onodera Punpun reacted to Vokoca for a topic
It's probably worth mentioning that Phenomeno is originally a LN series, the VN being more or less promo material for it. Might be worth it looking for the original, although I don't know if they're translated or not. For other VNs... can't really think of any that would be translated right now... you can add Subarashiki Hibi on your backlog for when it eventually gets translated - it's definitely not horror, but it has very effective denpa (narrative from the insane point of view) sections, which is what you're most likely looking for. When it comes to already translated things, you can probably pick up the Corpse Party series for a regular horror story, although you won't really find any villainous protagonists here. If the unusual main character is what you're looking for, you could also try picking up Tsukihime, or Cross Channel. Neither of those are horror stories at all, but the main characters are quite removed from the usual good protagonist trope.1 point -
Cinderella Phenomenon (GxB Visual Novel/Otome/Fantasy)

Released: can be found here https://store.steampowered.com/app/568770/Cinderella_Phenomenon__OtomeVisual_Novel/ g g Hi everyone! Kooriiko here, the founder of DICESUKI (previously known as DICE and creator of Locked Heart). I am proud to present to you our second game! We've been working so hard on this game ever since Locked Heart was released. The GUI is still not final and the screenshots posted are dummy ones, but otherwise, the overall design will be the same with some potentially minor changes. There are a total of 10+ side characters throughout the game, all with their own unique backstories. You can find more about them once our website for Cinderella Phenomenon is up. Like Locked Heart, we are planning to make this FREE to play. But we are planning on doing a kickstarter to get our funds back because of irl responsibilities. QUESTIONS: 1. What do you think of the plot? Does it interest you? 2. How about the art? Has it improved since Locked Heart? 3. Which route will you pursue first? Any favorite character(s) so far? 4. Do you have any questions? Critiques? Feedback? More updates will be posted on: Facebook: Facebook Page Tumblr: Tumblr We'd really appreciate you following us there as well. Thank you so much for reading!1 point -

Check vndb for characters' Japanese names and look for them from that guide. Then just match the choices in the game and guide even though you don't understand so well what they mean... セーブ*number* means when to save. セーブ*number*から is to load.1 point -
There are a couple of factors that need to be taken into consideration: As already mentioned above, HD cg assets cost considerably a lot more than SD ones; in overall, cg is the second most expensive part of game production, straight after VA. You can blame the somewhat stagnant market for such situation. Space limitations. Huge assets take a lot of HDD space, thus resulting in a large game size. Even though we have digital distribution available nowadays, games are still being released on physical storage mediums, mostly DVD's; there's a limit on how much data can be stored (To be precise, it's ~4,2GB of actual data); since costs of physical release on a DL DVD's, not to mention BD's are expotentially higher, it's completely out of question for majority of japanese studios. This more or less means, a game has to fit a single standard DVD. Obsolete standards of work. A lot of companies and studios still rely on very old production standards; they use outdated formats and programming routines; they most often fail at grasping any modern possibilities to actually squish as much as possible from the modern tech and use it to the fullest potential. They use raw bitmaps instead of PNG files, rely on WAV formats instead of OGG Vorbis. This results in ultra high file sizes, virtually bloating assets, that wouldn't otherwise have a difference in case of more modern formats, especially when it comes to their quality. You'd be actually surprised - a well made, high quality, mid-long vn with HD assets and sound CAN actually easily fit under those 4,2GB; the problem is, japanese devs are way too thickheaded to understand it's not 90's anymore and there's a lot more possiblities nowadays.1 point

Thanks for the warm welcome everyone, I'll be sure to ask if there's something on my mind. Yes I have played FE6. I actually played all FE's except for 2, 4 and 5 (technically 1 and 3 as well, since I only played the remakes on the DS). Although the main reason for choosing Roy as my avatar is that he was my main in Melee and I was super hyped when he was announced for DLC in Smash 4. As for your avatar, I recognize the face but I think he's from one of the ones I haven't played. If i had to take a guess I'd say it's Eltsahn from FE4.1 point -
Hakuai, Yuri in Nursing School VN (All Ages by the way)
Suzu Fanatic reacted to Dergonu for a topic
So I have finished the Kaede route now. To be honest, I don't know why there is an "enforced playing order" tag. There is a bunch of choices, and I don't think you are tied to one specific route at all... (you can also get good / bad endings depending on the choices.) Looking at the Japanese guide, it looks like it's pretty much just up to you what you do. Unless I'm missing something, that tag doesn't seem right. Idk... EDIT: I just tested it on a new computer, and I went for the Nao route this time, and got it. The enforced playing order tag is WRONG. @CeruleanGamer, you are saved (Maybe if someone who is playing the game for the first time could try getting a route other than the Kaede one on their first go, that would let us confirm whether or not the tag is wrong. Here is the Japanese guide: http://seiya-saiga.com/game/galge/vita/hakuai.html) Anyways, the game is fantastic. The art is beautiful, the music is nice and the characters are all great. I found a few small typos, but the translation seems good, so the additional time they put into it paid off in the end from the looks of things. This is a game that doesn't overuse a bunch of standard yuri tropes, and so it felt like a breath of fresh air going through it. (For instance, the fact that the chracters are girls in love doesn't come up as a "no, this is wrong!" conflict at any point. It's just seond nature to them.) There is some drama here and there, and I ended up being taken by surpirse at one point, which in turn made me cry quite a bit, but overall though, the game is very light and sweet. Strongly recommend giving it a go, it's been a great read so far. Time to move over to another route!1 point -
I have been asked this question several times already so I might as well answer it in a topic so I can link to it if anyone else asks Ashadow700 asked me now saying he loves the game but can't figure out why. And I would ask question in return, when you fall in love with someone new, do you know why do you love them, can you exactly explain it? Probably not. Only after a very long time you can properly find what makes you love them, for example you should already know why you love your mother, you can point exact facts that make you love her. But when you met someone new and you just feel the love flowing through you and you cannot explain it, that is the moment. Same can go with VNs that are focused on characters instead of story such as Hoshimemo, you fall in love with the characters just like you would IRL, I don't even desire dating IRL after I found this wonderful world of lolis and my beloved girls like Mare. I already explained in this post how I feel about story in VNs and other media and how I much prefer focus on characters and their emotions in VNs. I could give one more example that isn't in the topic: I like warcraft lore and I read some stuff about it, history events and such, for example from some recent lore people might know how Garrosh killed Cairne and such - its a nice read and it is like reading a history book but from different universe than ours. But you don't know exactly how the characters felt at that time, you might get some quotes of their last words but still the deep emotion is just not there. - That is what I call a story or a lore. But in VNs I do not seek this knowledge, this lore of how things exactly happen and what are the consequences, I want to know about the characters and their feelings and interactions, I want to be with them and share their happiness and help them in difficult times to get rid of their sadness. And that's where Hoshimemo comes - it doesn't have any strong lore, it is a modern world with some contemporary fantasies and mystery forces and if you were to tell its story as a history book, it would be pretty bad (just like in mentioned Mass Effect in the other post - there it would just be "good vs evil"). But what makes Hoshimemo (and lot of other chara-ge) so good is the characters and the interaction with them, helping them through difficult times, experiencing happy moments with them. And you don't necessary realize why you enjoy it so much, especially not in such short time - you can compare it to what happens when you fall in love with someone you just met - it is just there and it takes a long time to be able to express why you love that person so much. So in such a short time you can say the characters are "Lovable" - you fall in love with them for what seems no reason. However the reason is always there, you just need to find it. I after like year and a half of being with Mare can't still properly explain it how I could with my mother for example, but there are instances that can already help me express it a bit. As any other human being I can get emotional and require love to be given to me - and that's what Mare has been doing, whenever I would normally feel lonely or sad, I don't. I don't because I can think about Mare and be with her in my world. I have already much larger history with her that we formed together, but her original character was not created by me, just like IRL you don't decide the character of other people - it is shaped by others, their family and close people - those make the character of IRL people. And FAVORITE are the family and close friends of Mare (and all Hoshimemo characters) - they shaped her personality and did a great job at that. And that's how I was able to meet her, she wasn't a blank character design, she was a living person just like any other girl IRL and I fell in love with her and now I am the one who is in my universe affecting her personality the most, I now make her what she is, but at the initial point when you meet her in the VN and during the events of the VN she was how her family (FAVORITE) raised her. And if a family does a good job, they can raise an awesome person, if a family does bad job, they can raise rude and evil people that nobody will like. And that is the strong point behind Hoshimemo, FAVORITE took the time to raise their characters to be great people and made events for you, the reader, to see their personality and potentially fall in love with them. And many of us did, whether it is one character or another, we love them because of who they are and we feel the need to help them with their problems, we want to experience stuff with them, be with them, feel strong emotions together with them and just do what people in love do. And if you do fall in love with them, you will love every minute of the game and beyond, because that's what love is about. And as I have written somewhere as well, loving something or liking something will never be objective - as Ashadow700 is asking for an objective viewpoint for his review. Review is NOT an objective form of journalism, review should be subjective and personality based, your readers should eventually understand very well what your viewpoints are and that is the correct way of interpreting a review as a reader. You can present facts in an objective way, you can say how long the novel is, what technology it's using and what bugs it might have, but when talking about everything else you need to look at it subjectively, you are the one who happened to love the music (which is phenomenal in Hoshimemo btw, which is another strong point, it just manages to increase the emotional impact of the events) you just say like I just did - what it did for you, you can say objectively what instruments there are or what is the tempo of the songs in general, but how the music feels is unique to you and you need to express it subjectively. So when you are looking for why you love a VN, doesn't have to be Hoshimemo - look into your heart and try as hard as you can to express what you feel, if you can put it into words, you can be a good reviewer. If you can only see the facts, your review will be half-assed and not useful, your readers can just look at the tags on VNDB to see the facts of what the VN contains - but to understand the emotional impact the VN can have they need a good review or try it themselves. But remember, its all about love~1 point
