  1. I read it. It's pretty much the prototype to Sayonara wo Oshiete. It's hard to recommend the game because it feels very unfinished. Literally 30 minutes after stuff begins to get interesting the game ends. The ending itself is a huge letdown. But to be honest, that doesn't matter much. Everything before the last few minutes is simply perfect even though it seems like only a big prologue building up to something (which in the end will disappoint). The depiction of the life of the protagonist, his rise to madness, his interaction with other people and the other people themselves are all written brilliantly. There are so many scenes which I can now, 3 years after I played the game, still remember clearly because they had such a big impact on me and are still haunting my subconscious. (I think it's even better than Sayonara wo Oshiete in that regard, but Sayonara is clearly the better, more refined game overall and features much more themes than just being socially retarded.) A special mention deserves the fantastic soundtrack which nearly only consists of creepy arrangements of Beethoven's "für elise". To sum it up; I recommend it to every fan of Sayonara wo Oshiete. You won't find a better, more realistic depiction of madness and social anxiety in any other eroge (the closest would probably be Sayonara). Just don't expect a "full game" or a satisfying conclusion.

... it's been a while since my feelings on a VN have been as complex as my feelings for this one are. I say 'feelings' because this VN has massive emotional impact... not as much as Hapymaher, but nonetheless a lot of emotional impact. To be blunt, Makoto is nothing like Hapymaher's protagonist, so if you were hoping for more of his 'consumed by sorrow and despair but still living my life' personality, sorry, no luck here. Makoto is... a blank slate. I don't say this in a bad way. For better or worse, Makoto has lived his life in an isolated village where people literally don't talk any more than is absolutely necessary, lest they accidentally compel one another with their power, 'kotodama'. Makoto has a fiance named Mana (and no, not that kind of lukewarm, 'distant fiance' sort of thing you see in some VNs, since they actually get down to business), and a rather nice, slow life in that village... However, he yearns for the outside world, where people can talk to people without restrictions. He escapes from the village and collapses from hunger in a small town four days later, where he is saved by the first of four heroines, Kokoro. From there the story begins, as he makes the journey from an innocent 'kami' to a real human being with all the baggage that comes along with it. A lot of the most interesting parts of this game come from the fact that he naturally doesn't understand much about the outside world. Makoto's innocent, unstained viewpoint, combined with his natural kindness and willingness to embrace new experiences, feel surprisingly refreshing. Things other 'normal' protagonists would worry over don't even occur to him, and he is so laid back he makes the drugged hippies of US in the sixties seem tense. While he does change as part of the story, his personal 'lens', through which he sees the world, remains remarkably clean throughout... not to mention the guy has absolutely no sense of sexual morality (in other words, his idea of sexual morality is 'don't use his power to compel people to have sex with him'). The first of the heroines, Kokoro, is a shojo manga addict who has fantasies about immoral relations with older brothers. She is a natural at unconsciously grasping the hearts of others around her without trying, and she is pretty much the picture of a heroine who 'exists to be loved by everyone'. The second heroine, Kyouko, is a miko that can see dead people (yes, I went there). She has huge self-esteem problems and is more than a little weird... for one thing, her reaction to Makoto is one of the more unique heroine reactions to a protagonist I've encountered over the years... for another, she is abnormally self-derogatory in both action and word. Mana... is the protagonist's fiance from the village. She is pretty much apathetic about other people, unless they have the decency to provide her with food (from her point of view, people who give her food move up from 'stone in the road' to 'slightly adorable insect' in most cases). She is a bit of an S, when it comes to Makoto, and Makoto is pretty much her reason for living. Because of a careless use of kotodama by another member of the village, she is always cold and in her eyes, it is always snowing. Hotaru... is the true heroine of this story. Cheerful and active, not to mention highly intelligent and perceptive... she is actually a fairly attractive heroine from the start. However, she has less initial impact than Mana or Kokoro, for reasons that are fairly apparent. Since that is by design, I actually am not complaining about this, though. Now, to get to the downside of this game... it uses the G-senjou 'ladder' story structure, wherein the story progresses arcs where you choose to either pursue the heroine associated with that arc to an ending or move on with the main story. I can say that the path endings for the non-true heroines were actually pretty good, but having played the true path, they are comparatively low-impact. A lot of this is the fact that the major events of their 'paths' are in the arcs they branched off from, so little is added by their endings save for more sex and some minor tying up of loose ends. To get back to the main game... the true path is the impact I was talking about. The main arcs were all emotional, so I guess you can say that the other heroines' 'paths' were also emotional, but, as I mentioned above, there is a definite sense that very little was added by choosing one of the other heroines. Hotaru's path is easily the most powerful 'arc'. In fact, it is so emotional and powerful that there are two ends for it. The first one (which you are required to watch first) is... sad, to say the least. It isn't a bad ending, but it is a sad one. I know I cried. For the second ending... well, let's just say it is a good one and leave it at that. Overall, my viewpoint on this game is... just as mixed as I said above. My conclusions on the G-Senjou story structure are unchanged in the least. I still believe that all VNs that use that story structure should be changed to kinetic novels, just so I don't have to deal with heroine endings that are neglected by the creators of the stories themselves. While all stories with true heroines inevitably put a much larger emphasis on the true heroine, the way this story structure trivializes the other heroines is really irritating, especially when they are good heroines, like these were. However, if you take the arcs, characters, and the true endings separate from that source of irritation, it is a great VN. It just happens to use the single worst VN story structure in existence. Indeed, that story structure and the inevitable realities it brings along with it are the only thing that kept me from naming this as a kamige. PS: I will erase any and all comments that spoil anything in the last arc. I say this because this is the type of VN that can only be enjoyed to the fullest once, not the type that merely changes flavor with each playthrough, like Devils Devil Concept. Anyone who spoils this VN should have their skin sliced open, drawn back, then have salt rubbed into the exposed flesh. ... *Clephas drools and goes off to make BBQ*

  5. So, after several weeks of grinding I finally finished Ikusa Megami Zero. It was overall a very mixed bag with light and shadows and some of the lights were particular bright while some of the shadows were pretty dark. The Good: The Bad: The Ugly: Heroine rating: Haishera >>> Amdusias = Hakuginkou > Sora no Yuushi >>> Don’t care Final rating: 7/10 (Haishera was great, but the ridiculous over-sexualization of the plot and the crappy protagonist really drags it down.)

  6. 1) Handle: Octamatron 2) Positions you can fill: Translator 3) Types of projects (VNs) preferred: NTR, Netori, Galge, Nukige, but i prefer hardcore drama romance like White album. 4) Availability: Currently unavailable. Working for Luna translations. 5) VNs most interested in producing an ftl for: White album, White album 2, 妻みぐい3, 麻呂の患者はガテン系 (or anything good from ELF), AliceSoft's 戦女神 series and last but not least NTRPG1,2 and soon to come out 3. (they are not ADV's, but i would love to translate them, because of the mastery they are done with) 6) Motivation for joining in on ftl: Getting to know people from this niche and getting better at Japanese. 7) Conditions: I WON'T WORK ON: Scat, Guro, Horror or anything like that. As long as it is pretty, I don't care wheter it tears out my heart (so NTR is okay).

  8. To be completely honest, I am basically ignoring both of these. Lately, my interest in both childish lolis and incest has hit an all time low. You can basically go through the game without meeting most of the 7 or so heroines (or at least, hardly ever seeing them for more than a minute) outside of that blond Elis and Kiri. Now then, I may be praising Canvas 2, but I know for a fact you're a picky eater and I should warn you: I'll eat up any kind of rubbish. Me praising Canvas 2 is worth jack. It's probably a terrible game with nonsensical writing. It's just that I can't tell that kind of thing myself so I'll enjoy any "moe crapfest" that comes in my general direction.

  10. It kinda became a meme on steam like Nekopara. I have friends who pretty much buy any Sakura game on day 1. Oh and those people aren't VN readers at all. They only want to be part of the ''club'', at least thats what some of them told me when I asked them why do they buy Sakura.

  12. Understand, I'm not a huge fan of the moege and charage umbrella genres. This is something I'm sure anyone who reads this blog is already well-aware of (to the point of exasperation in some cases) and at this point, it isn't something I need to reemphasize. However, I've noticed that I've never really mentioned what I do like about moege/charage and their positive elements... and I thought I'd go ahead and put that down here. 1. Charage do make decent breaks from my workday, as they don't require much in the way of brain activity to enjoy. 2. Generally, their visuals are maintained at a level where they are pleasant to look at (some other genres use really odd art-styles... in the case of 07th Expansion, outright ugly ones, lol). 3. Junai (pure love) is a romantic genre that puts you at ease, in general. After all, you know that a happy ending is coming and there is no reason whatsoever to fear for the characters' future. 4. Comedy- Most charage at least attempt to be comedic. That they don't always succeed (increasingly, they don't succeed in recent years) doesn't detract from the fact that it is a quality of the genre. 5. Slice-of-life- Though you need to take it with a grain of salt, charage are actually much better as tools for learning about modern Japanese culture (outside of subculture) than anime and manga are, simply by the nature of a story with narration. That said, it is ultimately an exaggerated, compartmentalized, and idealized version of 'everyday life', lol.

    What are you playing?

Finally sifted through the end of Umineko: Episode 5. What a mess. The pacing is all over the place. This is easily the worst episode I've read so far. The ending just kept on dragging on and on like LotRs: The Return of the King - without the charm and heartwarming moments. Compared to earlier episodes, which had a nice balance of excitement and bleakness, this one was just bleak 70% of the time. It felt like struggling through a swamp while trapped in the middle of nowhere, sapping my stamina away while taunting me with despair. It's a terrible read. I mean, don't get me wrong, I don't mind dark and bleak stories at all. Hell, I'm a sucker for them. But this is mood whiplash, a sudden change of tone from previous episodes where there was at least some kind of adrenaline rush to keep you entertained amidst the death and despair. I just didn't have as much fun reading it as I did before in episode 1-4. I think the main reason why this is so is because the characters are either annoying Mary-Sues (Trollkastel) who can't be remotely overcame, or just idiots who are too dumb to live (Natsuhi). There's nothing about them that kept me engaged. The only characters I like in this episode is Battler (of course) and the newly introduced Dlanor. Dlanor is a powerful character done right. Trollkastel is a powerful character done so wrong. Don't get me started with Erika, that bitch.

  19. Boku no Hitori Sensou was one of the biggest disappointments I've had since I started reading untranslated. I can't believe it's written by the same person who wrote G-senjou no Maou. Should've taken those votes into account. Edit: the amazing BGM is wasted on this game, it's the only reason I'm not uninstalling it...

    True or False

Fuwanovel in a nutshell: We hate weebs, but wanna bring Japanese goods to those American weebs anyway. Kidding... kidding! I can't think of anything. To make a statement about Fuwanovel in a nutshell without joking sounds way too boring to me, because it's basically "Cool VN fans who have a great knowledge of the Japanese language and wanna share that world of VNs with the world." Yeah, that's pretty cool and all, but it's not really an interesting statement. Next person doesn't really like people who don't take things seriously...

  24. I picked up SupiPara last night and have played a couple hours. I'm enjoying it quite a bit so far. Right now, it feels kind of like it's setting up a lighthearted moege, but between the overarching theme of memory and the game coming from minori, I'm expecting shit to get a little bit more real before too long. As far as characters, I found Sakura pretty likeable right off the bat, and she's only been getting stronger in every scene. The other characters are more slowly growing on me as well, especially the MC's mother. The art is, of course, gorgeous. Characters have that same glow I saw in eden*, which makes everything look soft and lush. And of course it's all pseudo-animated (tons and tons of sprites). Back and profile sprites are both rare, though everybody seems to be raving about Muv Luv's back sprites lately, but SupiPara has both and gets a lot of mileage out of them. The effect of the profile sprite is especially dramatic, for me, and I honestly don't recall seeing that sprite angle anywhere else before (though of course my experience isn't that broad). I am having some issues with the engine, I think. I usually play on a tablet, which has never given me problems before, but the text display is excruciatingly slow, even after I set it to max, and the animations sometimes look a little choppy or just plain slow, especially when two sprites are on the screen at the same time. Probably going to switch to the desktop and hope that handles it better.

  25. Canvas 2 is waaay better than I expected. I'll bash the translation any day and typos are aplenty, but the Visual Novel itself seems great. I'm not even sure whether I'm on the common route or in a route or whatever, but it's long, it feels like I'm in control, and it feels really well crafted. It feels even more divergent than CLANNAD, and that's one hell of an achievement. The first playthrough, without a walkhrough, of this Visual Novel is truly magical. It feels like you're in control but it's not nearly as messy as CLANNAD. It's marvellous. The issue? I haven't gotten into a real route as far as I can tell, so I don't know how the romance proper will be. Will it be an *enters relationship* *has sex* *the end* sort of thing? I'm hoping not but it's feeling like it. Regardless, even if that were to be the case, I cannot deny that even the daily scenes can feel fairly romantic on occasion. EDIT: Also, a love triangle with two men outside of an otome. This is unprecedented! I, Protagonist-sama, have competition? Outrageous! Completely unrealistic!
