  1. A'ight, here's my take on it. I'D PREFER IT IF YOU DROPPED THE JAPANESE THINGS Honestly, I think originality and cultural differences explored in VNs can only help to expand the medium. Why set something in Japan (or incorporate Japanese thingmies) when there's a wealth of things to be explored on your home turf? Basically, go for it

  2. Okay? You're saying there are plenty of companies out there but only mention ones who are already in the game here. What other companies out there with potentially successful titles are willing to license out adult versions to the west, and why do you think SP is ignoring them or passing on them? edit: The point I'm making here is that you can't just assume that there are tons of developers out there who are willing to release their games in english with 18+ content attached. Or that they offer the kinds of games SP would want. How many more moege does SP want to license? What direction do they want to take things from here? If they want to do a serious action/gameplay title like Baldr Sky, should they have not licensed that and gotten something else because the 18+ situation is tricky? How many great gameplay eroge are licensable with easy 18+ options? The original point being addressed was that someone thought SP had bad business practices because they struggled to secure 18+ versions. The reality is that licensing is hard as hell and almost every license is a struggle. We don't know the reasons why nobody has licensed Baldr Sky until now, but we do know that if Giga is resistant to 18+ releases, that would have been a much bigger hangup for MG and JAST. The point Nandemonai was making was that SP sees opportunity in these places other companies see trouble. How long did it take for G-Senjou no Maou to be licensed? Do you really think MG didn't approach AkabeiSoft2? The situation surrounding that is likely to be extremely complex, but if one of the reasons AS2 went with SP was because they were open to the idea of an all-ages-only release, that would make a lot of sense. Or I guess, the better way to put this is that if you make your stance on 18+ so rigid, you close a lot of doors. There may always be other titles for them to get, but not ones they deem equally good for their catalog.

  5. That's easy, Sekai Project is taking the deals that Jast and MG would have walked away from. Jast cancelled the release of Cleavage because the original uncensored CG data has been lost; in their estimation, that meant there was no point in bothering with a release. Neither Jast nor MangaGamer would ever license a title where the developer made them remove the h-scenes. For MangaGamer, the closest would be when they removed the voices from Kara no Shoujo and Koihime back in 2011 when they were a lot smaller, and they simply couldn't afford to pay the license fees. For Jast, the closest would be Shiny Days, and the whole mess around the unofficial patch; and that was for legal reasons (as in, Mr. Payne does not want to go to jail). If a Japanese VN company is open to releasing in the west (more and more nowadays), but nervous about backlash over the h content (which is a lot of them, they remember RapeLay), Jast or MG are much less likely to cut a deal with them. If they can't get a deal finalized that includes the H-scenes, they just won't sign it. Sekai Project has been willing to sign those deals; so they have all-ages versions of some titles, but haven't been able to get a deal signed for complete versions. Jast and MG are eroge companies first, and all-ages companies second (if Jast even has any all-ages releases; I'm not sure they even do Edit: Forgot about Aselia). Sekai Project - well, by their own admission in this AMA, they chose to focus on all-ages, and were surprised at the amount of pushback that they got. So it has nothing to do with "having no idea how to run a business". The bad PR that comes from not knowing how to properly say "still in the works, we can't comment" is totally their fault, but in general, when negotiations are ongoing, companies keep their mouths shut. All of them do. Funimation doesn't say why they can't get show XYZ; they just say "there are some issues we need to work out with the licensor". And I guarantee Jast and MangaGamer have equally strict confidentiality policies regarding their negotiations. (Don't believe me? Go ask Doddler why he had to review Oyatsu no Jikan all those years ago.) It's just that, Jast and MangaGamer don't sign all-ages-only deals. Sekai Project does, and then keeps negotiating to make the adults-only release happen afterward. Jast and MangaGamer avoid these complicated PR problems, not because they know what they're doing (Jast is so slow because it's terribly run, although that's been changing recently) and Sekai Project does not - but because Sekai Project says "something is better than nothing" whereas Jast and MG will just not release the title at all if they can't get the h-scenes.

    Tsukihime

Tsukihime Rated 18+ The story begins in a recollection of a boy called Tohno Shiki in his childhood years. There, he gains a power out of this world - the ability to see the "death" of people and things. What is the meaning of this power, and what can he do with it? This is his story of finding the missing pieces of the puzzle. The girls that the player can end up with are: Arcueid, Ciel, Akiha, Hisui, and Kohaku. ENDING GUIDE Please note that each of the characters, except one, will have TWO endings. The FIRST playthrough will let you get the TRUE END, and LOADING from a checkpoint for that character can get you that character's GOOD or NORMAL END. If not, you may have to replay the route again. NOTE that the choices that you see within this guide are the choices that the AUTHOR used. It is the author's recommendation that you play in this particular order so that all characters' routes can be unlocked. WALKTHROUGH GUIDE ~Near Side of the Moon Routes~ Arcueid Brunestud's Route True End Good End Ciel's Route True End Good End ~Far Side of the Moon Routes~ Akiha Tohno's Route NOTE: You will need to have cleared the game once before you can get Akiha's Endings. True End Normal End Extra Normal End Hisui's Route NOTE: You will need to have cleared the game once before you can get Hisui's True End. True End Good End Kohaku's Route NOTE: To properly play Kohaku's Route, you will need to clear the game twice before you can get this ending. Once with any Arcueid's or Ciel's Endings and once with Hisui's True Ending. 7. http://prefundia.com/projects/view/project-to-lead-dies-irae-to-the-atziluth/11416/ Some bullet points: $160,000 initial goal. $500,000 for a new story. A split release, with both parts releasing May 2017. 18+ patch confirmed, will release 3 months later. Non-sexual content censored in the JP version of Amantes amantes will be restored. Both 16:9 and 4:3 versions will be available for people who dislike cropping. 16:9 version will have CG panning. Will be uprezzed to 720p/768p Translation team includes Conjueror, Garejei (the Tokyo Babel/Himawari duo), ReadingSteiner (Steins;Gate, Nympho Sensei Ryoko fame), and GundamAce (Root Double and I thought also Steins;Gate but it's not mentioned on the prefundia). It seems like they're addressing pretty much all of the major concerns right out of the gate. I'm sure some people will be disappointed by the delayed 18+ patch, but well, that seems to be how things are these days.

  8. I am a videogame writer & designer and in 2014, i decided to specialize in Japanese-styled games and Anime-games. This would require me to firstly, get an artist to make proper Anime-visuals and not the cheap copycat style that is often done by non-Asian artists. There are particularly very skilled and authentic artists from Spain. The second thing i had to make sure of, was to include the same weirdness and character stereotypes. Though there are some things i might have to drop since i don't handle them very well. For example girls with megaton tits.......im not mentally capable of doing that xD. Wich brings me to this question: would you as a player, hate a VN/Anime-game if it went a liiiiiittle bit Western on some parts and dropped some of the Japanese things? In other words: how fanatic are you? xD btw, here is a character from our upcoming videogame http://pre01.deviantart.net/9f05/th/pre/f/2016/320/7/0/706abd5a8d4b71d3b00563e5fcff3f50-daonlwm.jpg

  15. No, the version that everyone will get on steam will have the text and violence restored, so both versions will be "18+" in that regard. But, you will also get a patch on the side that will add back in the H-scenes. That version will be completely uncensored in that it has all the cut content. The steam base game will still have the text changes and CG changes from Amantes (not related to H content) restored though.

  16. How did you came up with that? There is clearly written in prefundia, that they will uncensor any 'gore' stuff in regular release, and then, 3 months later they will add a patch with pointless atrociously detailed, typical for VNs porn scenes.

    How fanatic are you?

There's a reason Japanese VNs, etc. feature Japanese settings so much. Why do the aliens always attack Japan? Why does Tokyo Tower get blown up so much? For the same reasons New York gets attacked in Hollywood movies. It's more familiar to the intended audience, yes, but also, it's more familiar to the writers. One of the big pitfalls is trying to write about something you don't know anything about. So I'd avoid trying to go too Japanese, unless you've actually lived there for a significant amount of time. You'll either have to spend a ton of time researching all kinds of things, or you'll get a lot of it wrong. You really need to understand why those stereotypes work for the Japanese audience in order to be able to use them correctly. Also, don't include something because "it's expected". Saya no Uta departs from 'the usual characters' rather, uh, disturbingly; this is the reason it's so well regarded. Include something because it adds to your story. Especially don't include something if you don't really like it, and are only including it because you think it's a bullet point people will want to see.

  20. Honestly, I think that when you're writting a story you should make it taking advantaje of your own personal experience in the place you know better. In the VN world western oriented themes are rarely found and, as a fan, I'd like to see a story taking place in other place than japan (or fictional world). That doesn't mean you should not put some Jap influence (like the jap style characters, and BTW the character you put there seems really cool). But in my opinion, I'd be awesome to have a VN with a western location, not only geographic, but cultural aswell. I wish you luck!

  21. Funny. When I read the title, I thought this thread was going to be a "how much of a fan are you?" kind of thing. Anyway, if you want your VN to be Japanese anime-themed, then by all means, do so. However, you have to be prepared to do a lot of research, because creating stories based on real life locations that you never even been to or lived in is gonna be difficult than creating one based on places you know. Hope you have the time to do so.

  22. Looks good, although a single character concept does not ring much. That said, if you can pull it off, by all means, you should. I will gladly welcome a western vn with western-based themes and japanese styled anime art. It's actually something I'm hoping for more nowadays. It's worth to note, that even though art remains important, what really pulls people into a vn is the writing and worldbuilding. Neglect those and even the best art won't help your game.

The visual novel genre isn't exclusive to Japanese games. Go for it, be as western as you want.

  24. Being late here, but speaking about Lunar personally I don't care whether Working Design or Ubisoft who translate those as long as I got that in English (I knew that PSP version was very easy though). Oh, and since there's recommendation for Lunar there, I would also suggested the sequel here for PS1 which still didn't had the remake for PSP. Also speaking about Final Fantasy, might as well recommend VIII here which some people said it was FF with the most romance although it was quite divisive though. And if you need more here, then both of Persona 2 duology and Tales of Phantasia (PSX version, not GBA version) could be good for you. PS - I just remembered that Radiant Historia was also good JRPG for PC, and there's some romance although it was very subtle though. And I could as well recommend both of Luminous Arc 1 and 2. Have fun.

  25. In an effort to revive my fried brain, I read a few shorter VNs over the past week. The first one was Sakura no Ki no Shita ni wa. I saw it on vnts a few weeks ago, and was a bit curious. I didn't hear anyone talking about it and it was short and free, so I decided to give it a shot. Sadly, I was sorely disappointed. It's basically an adaptation of a poem, so it's very short and only took me a few minutes to finish. I guess all I can say in its favor is that the visual/sound presentation isn't bad... it's probably much better in Japanese, but the English translation is grating and difficult to read, which really is a game breaker for a poem. It wasn't good, but at least not much of my time was wasted. Then I went on to Harmonia, which I didn't love, per se, but I most certainly didn't hate. The soundtrack was quite gorgeous and although I don't like Key's art style at all, the costume design itself was really nice. I generally had a good time with it, but the pacing could be a bit slow in places where it shouldn't have been and I found a few plot twists towards the end to be pretty predicable. It could be pretty hard to get attached to the characters as well, which made the tearjerks towards the end far weaker than they are in key's other works. My other main issue with the story was just that I felt like I had seen similar worlds and premises, and Harmonia didn't necessarily do anything for me that made it special. In spite of all that, it was generally quite nice as a whole and seeing as it's short anyway, I would definitely recommend it to the sort of person who likes that kind of story. After that, I read Highway Blossoms, and it was a real breath of fresh air in a lot of ways. The art is absolutely gorgeous and it probably has the best production values I've ever seen in an OELVN. And contrary to many OELVNs that go out of their way to imitate Japanese VNs in storytelling, Highway Blossoms was a road trip story set in the southwest. The characters were all really charming and even if they weren't necessarily deep, they were still a lot of fun to watch. The romance arc was really standard formula, but I thought it was executed fairly well. It was definitely a worthwhile way to spend my Saturday afternoon. And then, just a few minutes ago, I finished Sonohana Remembering How we Met. Honestly, I don't have much to say about it other than you probably know if you'll like it before you play it. It gave me diabetes and I'm not sure why I even picked it up but I like to think that it will make Himawari all the more satisfying in a few days, ahaha. Now I'm going to play the newly released Sonohana. By the time I'm done I'm not even sure if I'll ever be able to read yuri again. I really need something to distract me from the imminent Himawari release or else I'll go insane. Thanks to anyone who actually put up with and read this entire text wall

    Dies Irae Prefundia now live!

So it finally gets translated. I'm claiming all the salt and tears people will spill when they notice that dies irae is not "The worlds greatest masterpiece and the peak of human creation" and come to accept that in the end it is just a shiny chuuni with nazis and complicated sounding prose. Might still be interesting for a german to see how japan glorifies NS Germany.

  29. This is hard, because I can't think of too many heroines I've really disliked. I may not have liked the story they were in so much, but I didn't actually hate the girl or anything. So I guess I'll go with humor when I do this: Pros: most likely to have completely kinky sex with you anywhere, anytime. can't hear a thing you say. Cons: absolute single-mindedness on always being right, even more so than your average female, leading to potentially harmful results. can read your lips so no muttering under your breath. and her father is a fucktard.
