Darklord Rooke and one other reacted to Fred the Barber for a topic
@Darklord Rooke @Jun Inoue I finished it that same weekend, just never came to report in. I rather liked it, and would recommend it for anyone who likes reading epic fantasy. There are people I'd rather read in that genre (Scott Lynch and Brent Weeks are at the top of that list right now), but I'm very much glad I read The First Law: my mental world was a less interesting place without Logen and Glokta. Not everything in the story went the way I would've liked (in contrast to, say, a Brent Weeks series, which never goes the way you expect, but when it's over you wouldn't have it any other way), but you have to be realistic about these things.2 points -

In Final Fantasy VII and IX, here and there you will find some teasing and cute scenes, but they are not that focused in romance. Final Fantasy VIII and X romance plays a bigger role in the plot. Final Fantasy XII and XIII there's just some ships, barely anything.1 point -

Lol. People often just want their prejudices reaffirmed rather than viewing things with an open mind, and modern education systems will sometimes pander to these people by striking offensive topics or discussions from the curriculum. Stupid stuff really. The collapse of the Ottoman Empire and its subsequent carve up was the worst thing to happen to the Middle East.1 point -

Even though those games are great, most of them aren't like what he described: " 3d real time gameplay with good graphics " I can recommend other Tales of games, like Tales of Symphonia and Tales of Berseria (I'm not sure which tales of games aside from those two are avaiable on PC, It's a series I usually play on console). Maybe Nier Automata, I havent played it yet and the PC-Port is supposed to have some problems though.1 point -

Basically just type "jrpg" into the Steam search and browse.1 point -

can disgaea 5 be played on pc
Arkamondal reacted to littleshogun for a topic
Late to the party here, but let me give the detail answer here. As for Disgaea matter technically there's PS4 emulator in development, but since it's still in development it's not tested yet. So I won't recommend you to try that PS4 emulator for Disgaea 5. For Zelda, could you tell which Zelda that you want to play? If you mean newest Zelda, maybe it couldn't because once again the emulator for newer console was still in development. Although if you meant old Zelda obviously you could use emulator for that. PS - By the way, happy 23rd birthday to Arkamondal here.1 point -
What Video Games Are You Playing Right Now?
Eclipsed reacted to Fred the Barber for a topic
I've been playing Atelier Firis non-stop for the past week. It's honestly great: basically everything I liked about Sophie, and then some. The best part is how it makes the experience of traveling across the world feel like such an impressive journey. The plot gives you a one-month deadline for the "tutorial" section of the game, which is trivial and whatever, and then a one-year deadline for the first real major goal. I'm probably 20 hours into the game now, I've expended 200 days of my year, and I've basically just been traveling across the world map the whole time (okay, fine, and stopping to do a whole lot of synthesizing along the way, which is actually where a lot of that time went). At any rate, the game world feels absolutely huge, which is a feeling I've been craving from a JRPG for quite a while. Edit: oops, meant to say "everything I liked about Ayesha", not "Sophie". I never played Sophie. I'm so sorry, Ayesha!1 point -
What Video Games Are You Playing Right Now?
Eclipsed reacted to Turnip Sensei for a topic
Hell yes, NieR:Automata is the best game I've played in a while. Not only is it fun game on it's own to just play, but it's also really deep with it's story themes and actually utilizes the fact that it's a game to it's fullest potential. The amount of topic it touches is unbelievable and it gets better the deeper you dive in to it. At first I thought the writing was bit shallow, not bad but still. But in retrospect everything starts to fit together and you start to appreciate the minimalism, you could say, in context. I should play Automata again from the start and see how much more I can get out of it now, but at the same time I kinda don't, as I feel like I'm betraying myself in some extent towards the game. Not going to explain more because of spoilers!, but Automata is fantastic at making messages through it's mechanics. And as it touches so many themes (like really, I've heard people saying that NieR:Automata is game about everything in life, and it's not necessarily wrong) there's bound to one that touches you on a personal level, or you find something about yourself. I know I did, and I wish I could talk more about, but... Maybe later. NieR:Automata is the kind of game that, if it really clicks with you it won't leave your mind and you just keep constantly thinking about it. And yeah, the music is fantastic. I might have been mashing F5 on iTunes impatiently waiting for the release of the Original Soundtrack. Very heartily recommend!1 point -

Idk about Atelier Firis, in fact i completely forgot i was supposed to blitz the Atelier series, fk it's April WTFFFFFFFFFFFF ~~ NieR:Automata's pretty cool. It has some REALLY fluid action rpg hack n' slash gameplay, very satisfying (minus some of the arcade space shooter parts, I suck at those). You play as 2B, a stoic sexy & badass female YoRHa (android) in a post-apocalypticish machines-took-over-the-Earth-and-humanity-was-forced-to-the-moon scenario. One of the best things about NieR:Automata is its soundtrack, just yummy phenomenemities everywhere yo. When you get a track like this for a bossfight it's like yeeeeeeee Play it when you can.1 point -
Added an estimate of the artbook. Will at least be 80 pages!1 point

[Daru mode:] Hmmm... fantasizing with teachers is also very moe...1 point

Thanks for the feedback. We'll add an estimation of the Artbook. We'll also look into the prices. It's kind of wonky as we have to do an estimation converted from euros. Kickstarter doesn't allow us to do dollars, but they'll automatically show an estimate in dollars in the reward tier. It's a strange situation because we want to offer the game at 18 euros(lower than retail), which would be converted to 19 dollars approximately. Anyway, we'll consider changing it to 19 euros/20 dollars!1 point

Darklord Rooke reacted to Jun Inoue for a topic
Did you end up finishing it? I'm still waiting to see how you like the ending of the third book If you compare it to more "standard" fantasy, like classic good vs evil works, then Abercrombie is definitely quite darker. He goes for that "war is not a fucking joke" vibe.1 point -
I think it's mainly good, except for the fact that for the pricing you used is kinda non-standard for Kickstarter (For example I never seen anyone using retail pricing models such as 59.99 on Kickstarter), with the exception of the first tier (the 1 USD) you should use 0's and 5's rather than 0's and 9's, like instead of having the pricing at 15 USD and 19 USD as it is right now, it is better to put it at 15 USD and 20 USD, I checked quite a few of the Kickstarter that I backed (Sharin, Dies Irae, Chrono Clock, Muv-Luv) and they all used 0's and 5's. You should also perhaps give an approximate on how much pages the physical Artbook might have. Aside from this I might probably back for the 69 USD tier for the Nephilim Edition tier, the 110 USD tier interest me too for the physical Artbook, but it depends on how meaty it is.1 point

Trinoline Well, it is that time of year and a new Minori game is out. Obviously, it is going to hit all the characteristic I’d expect from them: excellent background music stellar production values, Kusuhara Yui, and adorable big breasted heroines. (I am sort of weird and can, and have, listened to their game’s soundtracks all day.) Anyways, I enjoyed the concepts that the game explored. As Androids that are made to mimic human characteristics are being developed in this world, it brings forth questions you’d expect to see. What it means to be alive? What it means to be human? It also ended surpassing where I thought it would go with these ideas, which was cool to see. I personally really liked the game a lot. Everyone's route1 point

What Anime are you watching now?
Darklord Rooke reacted to ittaku for a topic
Well said. I kept expecting to be disappointed so I could drop GD but instead I found myself laughing out loud. And as for the subtitles, you are spot on; this is one of the best localisations in anime I can recall. There is a LOT of artistic license in their approach to translation but in terms of capturing nuance while writing something completely different from the original Japanese, this has been sensational.1 point -
What Anime are you watching now?
Darklord Rooke reacted to Fred the Barber for a topic
I decided I wanted to watch a mindless moe comedy, so I picked up Gabriel Dropout, which, some five episodes in, is pretty much nailing those expectations — it's not amazing or anything, but it's exactly what I was looking for. One pleasant surprise has been the subtitles: they actually are amazing. Whoever wrote them has a damn fine sense of humor and a deft touch. Wish I knew how to find out the people who wrote the Crunchyroll subtitles for a given series so I could direct some plaudits their way...1 point -
Yeah there were still being worked on. But they're released now! Let me know what you think.1 point

Thank you for the recommendations, what i meant by 'realistic' was not necessarily about vns with no sci-fi elements at all, which is why i used the quotation marks i was pretty much asking for a well done plot. I don't like any weak plots in VNs, for example: a man gets stabbed in the heart yet he 'magically survives, stuff like that. as long as the vn gives me considerable explanations i am ok with it. Although Clannad had sci-fi elements in it, i don't remember any instance where i felt the vn forced something on me and i just HAD to believe it for the heck of it. the illusionary world was very mysterious and i liked how they explained it at the end. you want an example of what i don't like? In Grisaia in Michuru's route1 point

The Last Birdling (InvertMouse's 5th year project)
Nier reacted to InvertMouse for a topic
Hi Nier! Thank you for your question . The Last Birdling will not have a kickstarter campaign. The community has supported my previous projects, and thanks to them, I am able to fund recent games on my own. I noticed on other threads you like to support English VNs, so I very much appreciate that! But yeah, though Kickstarter can be a good promotion tool, I cannot undermine what the community has done for me in the past five years.1 point -

Kimi to Yumemishi
Chronopolis reacted to Clephas for a blog entry
Ok... this is by a new company by the name of Laplacian, and as a result, I didn't really have much in the way of expectations for it. As a result, I wasn't disappointed... but they didn't manage to surprise me either, sadly. This VN's protagonist has the ability to enter people's dreams when they dream about him and uses a perfume he designed himself to make people remember and dream about him when they go to sleep. This VN, when it comes down to it, is a straight-out moege. The low-level character development, the obvious targeting of moe-points, and the general shallowness of the conflicts, drama, etc. are all fairly standard for the ancient 'pure' moege genre. The common route of this VN is basically sort-of ecchi dream scenes with slice-of-life inserted between. I'll be straight with you when I say that there really isn't much content at all to this game, at least in part because the makers apparently couldn't decide if they wanted this to be a straight-out moege or a nukige. There isn't enough H in this game to call it a nukige, but the level of characterization is about the same as your average nukige, sadly. What reinforces this is that the visuals are about at the same level as a mid-high level doujin circle's work (in other words, it lacks the polish of commercial moege but looks too good for most doujin games), and the rather sloppy nature of some of the technical aspects. In particular, the scene transitioning is done poorly, with the music switching off abruptly between scenes rather than merely shifting to a new track... In addition, the system sound is ear-piercing and omnipresent if you highlight anything with your mouse... and you can't turn it off without eliminating all sound effects (even if you turn it down to the lowest level, it is still painful to the ears). It is rare for me to rate a VN on technical and visual aspects, but the fact is that the game's other content just isn't good enough to cover for the problems with the technical and visual aspects. The story could have been touching, save that the routes are generally bare-bones affairs and character development is minimal. In conclusion, this VN is an abortion... don't bother playing it.1 point
