Magical Marriage Lunatics Decent fantasy charage, but no better than decent. Typical of Moonstone. The Most Forbidden Love in the World While this game counts as a classic, I can guarantee it is going to cause trouble, considering that it openly states in-game that Mitoko is underage. Nanairo Reincarnation A kamige and a great choice in general... though I'm curious how they plan to deal with the plays on kanji and the uniquely Japanese concepts. Senren * Banka One of the better games from YuzuSoft... Dracu-riot... do I need to say anything more at this point? I posted about it when it first came out, but I don't have the energy to dig that post out of the graveyard right now, lol.7 points -

My first VN was True Love (back in the 90's) and now its 2017. I don't care if Sekai, Jast, MG wins a con with announcements. What i want to say is that im just happy that we get good VN's from all of them (ok Jast is lately even slower than normal). So thanks to all of them for doing a great job (I know, not all agree with me in this case)5 points -

Apparently these were the first words uttered in the denpasoft panel: "Who's excited to see some boobies!?!? WHO'S EXCITED TO SEE SOME VAGINAS!?!?!?!?!?" - The irony of course lies in the fact that they were probably still mosaiced. Regardless it seems they've been announcing a bunch of stuff (no sign of Baldr yet though).3 points -

VNR is back online!
Okarin reacted to MaggieROBOT for a topic
VNR now have a new server, so it's fully functional again!!!! Here's some instructions: - Go here http://vnr.aniclan.com/ and make a new account if you want to upload subs and terms (I think it works better logged in than as a guest). You can synch it with your old sakuradite account so you can keep your language preferences and things uploaded. - After that, you can upload your subtitles files stored in VNRfolder/Cache/Subtitles/xml/(important!) and upload the terms dict (if you didn't add anything private, you can skip this). Since it is a new server, it's pretty much empty until someone adds something into it. - The VNR compatible with the new server can be downloaded here: http://vnr.aniclan.com/upload/Visual_Novel_Reader(EN).rar (latest version) - You have to add all games with the wizard for it to recognize. However, if you didn't delete your old VNR, it will open with all your games already in the springboard. - Just one time while I was testing it ramdomly crashed, so it seems to be a stable version. Have fun, people! UPDATE: Based on people's questions: - Want to login in aniclan? Use your new name and password. Want to login in VNR? Use your sakuradite name and password. (For now, Dangetsu may change it in the futute) - Can you read logged as guest? Yes, you can. Can you add things in the shared dictionary logged as guest? I don't think so (Never worked for me, needs more testing) - VNR says it's a unknown game? You'll need to manually select the right text thread before you can use it. After that, it will work normally. Usually, the default option isn't UTF16, so if no subs are showing, select UTF16 right away! (UTF16 is the most common, but if it doesn't work, try UTF8)1 point -
Ever since Sekai Project acquired the license for Maitetsu, there has been discussion, speculation and hope among the internet; "Sekai Project, will there be an 18+ version?". "Sekai Project, where is the adult version?". "Sekai Project, will we receive those hardcopies on time this go around?" and so on. But I - as well as many others - highly doubt that this will happen. Therefore, I am quite confident to announce the following bet: IF Sekai Project (not a fanbased translation group) confirms a full1 18+ version of Maitetsu at any point between now and the official release, I will change my current Avatar to one voted by community2. This is the one time chance for the community to break my status as an eternal user, who has not once changed his avatar. However, should I win the bet, everyone who bet against me will have to wear the TexasDice avatar for 1 week. Further rules: - 1Full means no content is left out. A partial adult release will not count. - 2Every User who bets against me, will add one week to my punishment, should I lose. (example: Should three people bet against me and win, I'll wear the punishment avatar for 3 weeks.) - In case of my loss, I'll gather suggestions for my punishment-avatar and let you decide which one to wear via Strawpoll. The suggestions can't break any Forum rules, keep that in mind. - Bets given after I lost obviously won't add to the punishment time. - [Placeholder for future Questions/clarification] Good gambling everyone. Participants: EDIT: The Sign Up period is over, FUTHER SUBMISSIONS WILL BE INGORED - Texas Dice August 2nd 20161 point

Surprise in Chrono Clock
Suzu Fanatic reacted to Benji Price for a topic
I was playing Cro's route when I found out a detail that really surprised me. I don't know how many people here are Movies fan, or in particular Quentin Tarantino's movies fan. The thing is, I saw a line in which Rei mentions a Character from the movie "Pulp Fiction" (my favourite movie of all times) and it was amazing to me, since I have never seen yet a mention like this one, that writers take as a fact that you will now that character. Or maybe it's just a translation detail, since I haven't read the jap text (if someone did please tell me). So, I just wanted to share this with everyone Here's the screenshot of the line: And here is the scene from the movie where you'll know that character: Cheers!1 point -

PapaRabbi reacted to Fred the Barber for a topic
I think this is mostly a question of consideration of audience. There's certainly something to be said for targeting your translation for an audience of non-Japanese speakers who have nonetheless been steeped in Japanese culture, but there's also something to be said for tuning a translation to try to capture a broader audience, hopefully without losing that venerable audience of enthusiasts. This is, I presume, the line that most VN translations try to walk these days: increasing accessibility without sacrificing the accuracy and context that, understandably, the enthusiasts demand. And it's important to understand, with a work of fiction or poetry especially, that the translator's goal is (or at least should be) to give their audience an equivalent experience to what the original author intended for their own audience. Consider page 73, paragraph 2, of this book I came across while looking up some translation theory: IMO, as the translation critics the VN community have become, we have a tendency to get too hung up on extremely small-scale meaning equivalence (i.e., is the joke exactly the same as it was in the original?), and to be too willing to sacrifice the bigger-scale equivalences in experience (i.e., is the joke funny?). The explanation stretches pretty well, too, if you consider "equivalence in experience" as implying that, for instance, a joke should be about roughly the same topic, or a reference should share as many characteristics as possible, like how old the thing being referred to is, what various cross-segments of society think about it, etc.1 point -

I am a giant sucker for monster girls, so Magical Marriage Lunatics is right up my alley. Probably MangaGamer looked at how hot monster girls are right now and decided this game would be a good pick, especially since both of their Moonstone releases have done well. As for Damekoi, I read up on this game in the past, and I believe I saw stuff that indicated she's explicitly underage when the relationship starts but that, if you pay attention to how long passes in-game, nothing actually happens until she's 18? Even if this turns out not to be true, though, it's not the death knell that it might seem. Those legalese disclaimers that "all characters are over the age of 18"? Yeah, they won't offer much protection in the event that some prosecutor decides that Imouto Paradise is obscene. They'll just say "come on, these characters are obviously in high school, so even if the main character is 18, the others are all younger than him, especially Koharu and Hiyori" (the loli twins). If Mangagamer can get away with releasing Sweet Sweat in Summer and Sweet Young Bride, and Jast USA can get away with releasing Littlewitch Romanesque, then MangaGamer can almost certainly get away with releasing DameKoi. All depictions of underage sex aren't illegal. That would outlaw Romeo and Juliet, among many many other things that are clearly protected. Only obscene depictions of sex lack First Amendment protection, and to be child porn, something first has to be obscene. The relevant standard in the US for obscenity is the Miller Test, and it provides: When asked about why Littlewitch was an exception to Jast's longstanding no-lolige policy, Peter's comment was that they decided no one could possibly conclude that Littlewitch would fail this test. I imagine the same could be said for Damekoi.1 point -

I think starting a heroine route only means that you start the VN from the beginning with preset choices that lead you to the preselected heroine route. You can also start a new game and make all the choices yourself and end in every heroine route. If you really finished the 'common route' labeled "new game" you've probably already finished the game with one heroine route lol. I think my choices lead me to Kei's route.1 point -

To each of their own in regard of Majikoi announcement I guess, either think that it was redundant or looking forward to the release. Although once again I'm in redundant side here though. As for JAST, I admit that you had point that they were the first company that brought VNs translated first. But if I might something, I agree with Sanahtlig that they business model was outdated because they didn't adapt with current VN localization business like Mangagamer, or even Sekai. Their business model might be good at 2000's in regard of VN localization, but it wouldn't do any good right now (Except for people who want to collect any physical edition of the VNs). Note that JAST still release their VNs along with physical copy, while both of Mangagamer and Sekai was preparing lthe download version for their VNs first. By the way, since @Shioxus stated in regard of afraid with JAST announcement, yes I also experienced that when Peter Payne registered as VNDB user and asking about Majikoi translator there which mean that there's a chance that Majikoi would be licensed by JAST (Of course it mean that we could gonna had Majikoi release date delayed even further). Here's the thread in regard of Peter Payne at VNDB.1 point -

I just looked all this up cause I got annoyed/curious at how long it was taking. This isn't quite right. The partnership was announced in 2009. But at that time, they only announced 2 titles: Demonbane (which released in 2011), and Jingai Makyou (which was one of two stealth cancelled games). Then in 2011, 5 more Nitroplus games were announced: Saya no Uta (released in 2013), Hanachirasu (released in 2015), Kikokugai (also stealth-cancelled), Sumaga, and Django. And if you look at the progress log there's some juicy tidbits: http://follow.jastusa.com/post/128544859416/progresslog Even though they haven't updated it since last September, you can still see work indeed proceeds on Sumaga. There's no update on Django (that "december" date is "december 2015", and there's no subsequent notes) so who the hell knows what's up with that. But Sumaga definitely is being worked on. Notably, both Sumaga and Django are listed officially on a progress tracker, meaning that there's very little chance one or the other has been stealth cancelled (like the two that got memory holed after being announced).1 point -
The initial Sumaga translation was indeed widely criticized, and I heard that Makoto had a hell of a time whipping it into shape. Granted, by any reasonable metric it should still have been released by now.1 point

It's still an incredibly difficult process trying to learn by reading but the one thing it has in its favour is that you have something motivating your learning. I seriously suggest learning some grammar on the side though through some formal process, either through online guides or buying yourself an old fashioned textbook and working your way through it. Vocab is the easiest part of learning Japanese if you can just look it up on a dictionary. Grammar is the cornerstone of learning the language, especially since its grammar is wildly different from English. What's worse is that the casual +/- slang you encounter in visual novels, anime and manga isn't really taught well anywhere in particular but once you get the grammar you can start learning how casual speech and slang deviates. Text hookers will fail a lot on casual grammar and slang.1 point

Because "Sekai Project" doesn't sell 18+ VNs, "Denpasoft" does. They're still pretty careful with that division. Still, I think it's pretty safe to assume that they are releasing 18+ versions for most or all of the ones that have 18+ versions in Japan. They are for Dracu-Riot and Senren Banka.1 point

Well, no problem there in regard of your curiousity there. As for Marriage, the setting was still focused in school so better don't expect too much there. Anyway, apparently Sekai was announced many thing while I was sleeping here lol. My comment for now is that only two of those were interesting to me, because the rest was either still in development or already did had translation available. In fact, I wasn't as surprised as last year when I did read that Dracu Riot was announced (Granted, last year I watch the announcement but still) because it already had translation available, if only the way to got that was a little bit controversial. Well, if I may comment here is that it's Decay's team right to do partnership with Sekai imo. As for Senren Banka and Nanairo, I was quite interested with those two especially Senren in which it had good number of CG so much that it exceed Gin'iro Haruka CG number. As for the rest, well no interested for now although Rewrite+ might be good though. I'll keep my eyes on both of Denpasoft and JAST later.1 point -

Dal Segno is not the worst thing ever and you do get a lot of content for your 30 bucks, including the art, which is a strong point in my opinion and a lot better than the partially questionable anatomy of Da Capo 1, 2 and even 3. The character route I've read also picked up the pace considerably compared to this really dull common route. If I had to break my disgruntled feelings down, D.S falls down the other end of the pitfall that many moeroge fall into. Usually, we complain about too much melodrama stretching out the reading time, but Dal Segno goes the other way and there just isn't anything happening at all. The writing just lacks "oomph", if you know what I mean. Rarely ever does a scene stand out and burns itself into my mind, either positively or negatively. Each scene just happens and then there's another scene and that goes on until it's over. So far I have only read chuuni girl and she did have some cool... is set-pieces the right term for VNs? Fuck it, there were some cool set pieces in the end and there was a little more going on than the "nothing" of the common route. Even though both of the big "twist" came out of nowhere and had no build up. On a personal entertainment level, I would say, I enjoy Dal Segno more than Da Capo 1 (because save for Kotori, D.C 1 is a dumpster fire) and less than Da Capo 2 (because D.C 2 has some great locations and stories. Except for Koko, fuck Koko). Which is exactly what I think about Da Capo 3. As far as recently translated VNs go, I say Dal Capo 4: Revengeance is not unreadable, but it's a lot worse than Hatsukoi 1/1.1 point

I'd check the actual Japanese line before getting your pitchforks out.
