  4. This actually explains a lot! I'm dyslectic, my ortography is horrible in every language I use and I often struggle with grammar, even though I spend decent part of every day reading, including academic texts, and writing (both in Polish and English). I also have very poor visual memory (those kanji...). Relatively low English vocabulary definitely also comes from my lack of dedication in earlier years of learning and little interest in fiction literature or poetry, but in general there are important factors that can influence how hard it is for you to learn and how fast you make progress. Obviously, hard, systematic work is always the prime component of success and learning new languages definitely is fun (I have a lot of joy learning Japanese now...). But its really not the same experience for everyone. :>

  6. Make that 3 votes. I've been hearing lots of interesting tid bits about this VN, and I love me some dark BL. Other than that, I voted for Evolimit and Hikari no Valusia........again. I kinda wish Mangagamer were more keen on releasing titles that have existing fan translations, because I'm dying for an official release of Ayakashibito.

  10. This is a thought that has been on my mind for some time. Now we all know the chances of a high school couple staying together forever are slim. You meet new people once you leave school, etc. I do know that it’s possible. But do you think visual novels present teenage romance in a way that is realistic?
    1 point
  11. Ah, hey, that looks quite good from a first impression! I'll try to avoid reading any more about it so I go in blind. Thank you very much for the recommendation Maggie, I'm surprised I haven't heard of it before. Aye, I have no objections there. I just wish the counter-examples were a bit more numerous, since I personally can have trouble suspending my disbelief for a utopia-ish story at times. However, I have nothing against either kind, I've enjoyed quite a few VNs that just throw realism (for lack of a better word) out the window and let it slowly die out in the cold That's perfectly fine, we all have our own preferences. I just like a bit of variety. I enjoy a good romance story as much as anyone else, but I don't like going into every single one feeling like "okay, she is the true heroine. they will get together somehow in the end, regardless of what may happen in between", or "okay, these 4 are the romanceable characters, the protagonist can end up with whatever one I pick". I imagine that's an unpopular opinion though, and I don't expect the VN industry to cater to my unique tastes

  13. I also have dyslexia, but I haven't really found kanji to be that difficult. Most of what I have struggled with was in regards to grammar, spelling and slow reading speed (btw this is for all languages not specifically japanese).

  14. Well that's funny. I don't think I'm dyslectic, or at least I was never diagnosed and I imagine it's not something that goes unnoticed for a long time, but my visual memory is terrible as well, which causes me a lot of trouble when I have to orient myself. Take me out of the paths I've went through over and over, and I'll get lost inmediately. I also struggle to identify right and left. I'm not able to react inmediately without first thinking it over using the hand I write with as a reference. Because of that I had a really hard time taking my driving license practices and exam, and was always stressed out. Well, actually, I think Polish writing system is phonetic, if a bit confusing with all those digraphs and trigraphs, but English... well... there's this classic joke :

  16. Really liked Kamidori too, it was my first gameplay vn. Too bad that only interface and machine translations are available for the other games. Maybe after Mangagamer gets done translating Alice Soft titles, they'll try to pursue Eushully [yeah i know, even if thats possible, it'll take many years].

  18. Hey, Fuwanowel has been very important to fuel firstly my passion for VNs and then the skills to actually direct one. Don't expect romance but do except quality writing (well, I hope so). I think it might particularly interest people who enjoy comedy, surreal plots and/or writing. “The Deadline,” a Visual Novel developed by the Italian team NDE Visual which satirizes the publishing industry, will let the player experience the joys and sorrows of a young writer, influence the development of the story through multiple narrative choices, and most of all, have plenty of fun! The full version will be out in June 2018 if we don't miss... The Deadline. laughs nervously In the meantime, if you’re interested in writing, enjoy surreal plots, or just want to have a laugh and try something new from an indie team of experienced writers, you can download the Free Demo. It includes about one hour of playtime and introduces the player to the quirky and surreal style of “The Deadline” and its characters. It is available from the 4th of January on itch.io -PC and Mac versions, the Play Store - Android, and the App Store - iOs. More on plot, Characters, screenshots and whatever Since this is our first Visual Novel and we are still working on the commercial release (of which 80% of script and art are ready), we'd really appreciate if fellows devs or curious readers could give us feedback of any kind, especially about what could be improved. If you have questions or anything feel free to ask me. Cheers.

  21. Let's see. I think just in case you want some slice of life then I guess I could recommend Saku Saku (Seconded HMN) because it was the shortest VNs out of those choice (At least back when it was released). As for Psycho Pass, looking at the score it might be just a mediocre one although feel free to try though. if you interested with Fate feel free to try that in the future, although keep in mind that perhaps it would be better if you didn't search any info in regard of Fate yet, because we have too much spoiler out there. Have fun.

  22. Professor Dave's Station had some funny ones (Makina's mom one ##!!??) Try most H from Ultimate Boob War 2 If you don't mind laughing at how bad something is, rather than anything the characters say try literally any H by Key. Kokoro H from majikoi was funny and Margaret's was hilarious (majikoi S) [ *wan wan*] +1 on emis anal scene, (when she finds banana lube I died)

  23. Grisaia No Meiyuu has a comedy rape scene, though the girl was actually half willing (after being ravaged a lot, said girl tries to crawl away, but is slowly dragged back in). Also has a scene with one girl (Michiru) that has 2 souls inhabiting her body (so it's an odd threesome scene). Also, less then 30 seconds into Yumiko's after story, you see her in a bunny suit (which for her, is extremely out of the ordinary). Grisaia no Kajitsu had a hilarious (and VERY arousing) scene, that wasn't even a H scene. At the beach, Michiru ends up getting 'fingered' through the sand, and her swimsuit, by the maid. Michiru doesn't enjoy it at all (but her screaming was hilarious). Kotori's 2nd scene (If my Heart Had Wings), had a comedic start (it even had the game's comedy music playing). Her reaction was priceless xD Dal Segno had a Softcore H scene in Io's route. She flips out when she suddenly realizes she's lost all of her clothes. And the morning after, she attempts to 'admonish' the protag, but her panties are visible the whole time. She flips out again when she's told. And she has another embarrassing panty incident the next day (she gets stung on her Thigh, and she's forced to lift her skirt while the protag applies cream). Technically not a H scene per say, but Clannad had a funny moment. In Tomoyo's route, the protag on 3 seperate times, "imagines" having his way with her in the kitchen. In his imagination, it ends badly for him every time, as he's immediately stabbed in the forehead by a random object (the 3rd time, it was a radish xD). Protag is like "This is how it ends, AGAIN!?". Katawa Shoujo had an awkard anal scene with Emi. At LEAST 5 times after that, they say "we are NEVER doing anal again!".

  30. Shinsou Noise is the first game by a new collaboration company called Azurite, which was founded as a joint effort by Silky's Plus and Liar Soft. In this case, Liar Soft provided the writing staff and Silky's provided the art and programming staff. It is also fairly obvious that the planning wasn't done by the Liar Soft team, given the general style of the story, which is more in line with my experiences with Silky's Plus (and thus lacks the annoying conventions Liar Soft usually indulges in). Anyway, this VN is a mystery VN, with the added element of a 'deduction game' that is part of the story. The deduction game fits into the story, where the protagonist, a reception-only telepath who can't control his abilities to any significant extent, figures out who committed a crime at a specific time and place. This game mechanic is... to be honest... not something I really enjoyed. I mean, it was fairly easy to figure out all but the sixth-chapter stuff without the walkthrough (I had to resort to the walkthrough for the sixth chapter, where things aren't multiple-choice and you actually have to type in the answer). However, to me the deduction game mechanic felt like it broke up the pacing of the game... perhaps it is because I prefer being a watcher over an active participant in mysteries, lol. There was one other element, which people will inevitably remark upon, that annoyed me.... it was yet another release that utilized the ladder-style story structure. What made it worse in this case was that you could feel the writers trying to make you hate that you picked anything other than the main path, and at the same time, they created a requirement for you to see the other endings before you could view the true one. I'm not going to rave this time, because I'm pretty emotionally exhausted right now. The story of this game is full of tragedies... including the big one that forms the basis for all the protagonist's actions in the main story. What's more, regardless which of the two final endings you choose on the main path, it still feels like you betrayed someone. There is no real sense of satisfaction that comes from completing this VN, at least for me... perhaps it is because I so quickly became fond of Sakura. Momo, the true heroine, is a true innocent... an absolutely-trusting mind who I found pretty much impossible to see as a heroine. Overall, this game will probably split people who read it wildly between those left feeling like I am right now and those who love it for the Japanese-style mystery... EDIT: As an addendum, I'm going to put in my two cents about this game's theme... ... to be honest, both teams were obviously taking waaaaay too much pleasure in hurting the characters from start to finish, without the salvation of this being an utsuge or a nakige. The actual heroine endings were all short and pathetic (literally pathetic) both in scope and in design. I felt actively insulted with the final two endings, which felt like an anticlimax after all that had come before. I don't know why they chose to finish things that way, but it left me feeling like I'd gone through all that vicarious suffering and striving for nothing.

  31. Umm... this game isn't kind to its heroines in general. I don't recommend it, flat out. However, if you don't want bad things to happen to your heroines, this isn't your game.

  33. I've actually got the exact same result as Mr Poltroon: http://testyourvocab.com/result?user=9512217 It's been literally a decade since I've last attended any kind of English class, but I simply watch, read and write stuff in English everyday, so it had to be on decent level at this point. If only I was able to put that "rich vocabulary" into practice, that would be awesome. It somehow doesn' t work that way though. I generally have very little talent for learning languages and only got this far by sheer length and intensity of using English in my studies and hobbies.

  34. Knowing JAST I'd say 15 years is too generous, Haha. I appreciate the offer but it's not the patch that's a problem it's more of getting a copy of the Japanese version to patch like the team that did the patch tells you too, or buy the English version on disk which is rare enough on it's own, let alone even rarer finding one outside the US.

  35. My result. I used to study english pretty hard, when I was younger. Now it's nothing but a faint memory. Might be the fact, that despite not being a native english speaker, I began very early and was exposed to english all the time from cartoons when I was a kid (thanks, Cartoon Network), through comics and literature later on. I had quite skilled teachers in my middle/high school as well and they actually wanted to teach us stuff, which I'm really grateful for. Comparatively to my vocabulary, my english speaking skills are rather rusty and poor, to be honest.

  42. Finally finished Ourai no Gahkthun, and overall it was an enjoyable read, though not without flaws. What makes this VN really stand out is its unique and mature Steampunk setting. A large academy on a small artificial island, located close to the coast of Marseille in an early 20th century France. Most characters are already young adults instead of teenagers and the academy resembles more a university than a school. The VN also manages to create the right atmosphere for the right moment. Slice of life scenes have a classic soundtrack that perfectly captures the feeling of a Paris inspired, lifely city, while the darker scenes are backed by an eerie soundtrack. The battle scenes were also surprisingly well done, using animated effects and such, even if some end a bit sudden. They were also not too long which was a huge plus for me. Although the VN is written from a third person point of view, it uses a rather interesting writing style to create a semi-protagonist feeling when needed. This is done through inner monologues of the characters where they share their feelings and thoughts with the reader, usually in a voiced manner. This is often done for female characters and for Neon in particular. Story-wise there were lights and shadows. While Tesla was an overall interesting character with some supreme lightning powers, you don't really get to know a lot about him, even to the end. He just comes to the academy as a transfer student and rescues Neon from a near-slavery fate. Together they oppose the members of the student council who use some kind of demonic bell to gain special powers - also called arts in the VN. Most chapters then showcase a conflict with one of the members of the student council, though not all of them. And so you get to know that not all of the members are just bad guys and that there's more than meets the eye. While the VN does a marvelous job in setting up a believable Steampunk world and creating the right atmosphere for it, its biggest flaw is certainly the story-flow and character development. To use a somewhat accurate comparison, I guess most people remember the infamous Windows progress bar and when it sometimes gets stuck at about ~X% for minutes, just to suddenly jump to the end in a second. And here it's pretty much the same. While in most chapters you get to know a certain side character better, this is usually not the case for Tesla or Neon and their relationship gets stuck very soon. The chapters are also very independent from each other, to a point that the order doesn't really matter. Usually chapters should build up on each other to create a homogenous story flow, but this isn't really the case here. But in the last chapter the VN suddenly turns up to light speed story development and literally every story and character development you can image is squished in there. It goes without saying that this didn't work out without some sacrifices in the form of abyssal size plot holes like... So yeah, there were quite some questionmarks at the end. For that reason I find it difficult to really call this a story VN. I'd call it more a slice of life VN with a unique setting and actually entertaining slice of life since in every chapter there's new stuff happening with new CG's and sometimes even new characters. It was also somewhat interesting to see an unavoidable tentacle rape scene in a Steam VN. Granted, it was pretty tame, but WTF. So, since I overall still enjoyed the VN and liked most of the characters, I decided to call this a good slife of life VN instead of a bad story VN, so my final rating is 7.5/10. And yeah, I managed to finish a dreadful boring Mihiro route in Wagamama Highspec in about 3 months of time - I'm so proud of me. Still want to try Ashe's route, but I think I'll pass on the other ones.

  43. I never really got into visual novels much. I was really into anime back when I was 15 and I watched some key anime and heard that there were "games" for them. Same happened for danganronpa and school days. School days was such a weird experience that I wanted to search for the game itself (plus youtube-chan said it was animated). So I kept googling it but all that came up was websites having moon runes in them (dunno if School Days was translated back then or if I was bad at searching stuff). Then I searched for English visual novels and boom.... Katawa Shoujo came up. So I played the game and after finishing it, I searched for similar English visual novels and this led me to this website, fuwanovel itself (a friend told me about it). I found Danganronpa and started playing it. Since I started playing visual novels after Katawa Shoujo, characters being voiced was such an amazing finding for me. I really liked the concept of visual novels because I had a really bad imagination (still do!) so voiced characters + seeing the expressions of characters + having some kind of an ost playing in the background + still having the novel atmosphere was really a good combination. I then read Steins;Gate and Fate/stay night and didn't manage to finish one whole visual novel since. So I can't really say that I really got into visual novels. As you can see, what I found to be barriers for me to get into visual novels were several things though (those are subjective to me and probably not a lot of people agree with me on them) : 1-Sexual Content: until F/SN, I didn't really have much sexual content (I used to skip h-scenes in katawa shoujo) in my visual novels but the sexual content in F/SN had to do with the story so it was arguably ok. I still didn't feel a need to go into an h-scene from beginning till end. I used to read books from time to time and sex scenes were just implied and not described form beginning till the end in full detail (and ofc didn't have illustrations for all their stages) so it was really annoying for a bit since they were not enjoyable. Additionally in other visual novels, sexual content felt really unnecessary. I still think of most sexual content in the visual novels to be utterly unnecessary because there are nukige after all. It's like ignoring all hentai and doujins and just overly implementing h-scenes in all anime and manga. 2-Idea of routes: despite me liking the idea of being able to choose a route, the inconsistencies in some routes really aggravated me especially in quality. I was never the kind of guy who you can tell "The story gets better ahead so keep reading". This happened with Shizuru's route in rewrite and mitchiru's route in grisaia no kajitsu and they both made me drop their respective visual novels. 3-RomCom moments being way too long: even in games that were not considered moege, the romcom moments were still way too long (e.g. fate/stay night itself). Trust me, I do love RomCom moments but I don't want to spend over 10-20 hours of my reading experience on it. And obviously it gets even worse in games that seem to be dedicated to RomCom but are still long (in terms of hours) like my gf is the president, princess evangile and almost every common route (especially in key visual novels like kanon and rewrite and it kinda continued in the routes to a huge degree). Such moments eventually feel repititive and boring for me, put me off and I stop reading the visual novel for a while until I ultimately lose all interest in the visual novel. 4-Setting of visual novels and being repetitive: Now this is not a problem for me towards visual novels only but it has really irritated me even in anime and manga. After consuming japanese products as my hobby for about 5 years, I am starting to get bored of the same highschool setting with the same generic characters having the same character traits that were introduced in the 80s and 90s and then they were thought to be amazing to just repeat for almost 3 decades. All encounters start to feel so cliché to the point that it's just a meme when they happen. Lack of seriousness and being almost always unrelatable started to become annoying. I guess you could say that not introducing relatable problems might be good since it's a means of escapism but I'd love to see relatable problems from time to time.
