What's the most awkward thing to happen to you while reading a VN?
Sayaka and 6 others reacted to MaggieROBOT for a topic
Oooh, my parents are some purists and slightly homophobic, so it could lead to aaaaaaaaaaaall kinds of embarrassing situations! But that didn't stop me to play VNs in the only computer in the house before I had one for myself. And this story start with Comyu, of all things! Me and my sister were reading Benio's route and thought it was okay because the porn mostly happened in the love hotel, so if that background appeared, we just have to close it and pretend nothing happened. Except Rondo's h-scene starts out of nowhere!!! And my mom was sitting some five meters behind us, in a place she could definetly see the computer's screen... She was half asleep, so she didn't noticed, but boy I don't remember what I hit first, the mouse to click elsewhere or my sister because she was with the mouse at the time and didn't clicked elsewhere fast enough. My life is now three years shorter because of the scare.7 points -
What are your least favourite things that VN localization companies do?
Veshurik and 4 others reacted to VirginSmasher for a topic
Hello again, you degenerates. Today, instead of trashing one specific part of VNs, why not tackle everything wrong with VN localization companies in general? Mainly doing this because I feel like shitting on the reason I even get good VNs in the first place. Well, here we go. No turning back from here Mangagamer is easily my favourite localization company, yet this doesn't mean they don't have problems. First of all, the low pay that their editors apparently get. Editors do a lot more work than they're given credit for and unfortunately, they don't get enough respect and it shows in their paychecks. Also, maybe respect the opinions of beta testers more than you actually do. Damn, Mangagamer isn't that appreciative of jobs that catch mistakes before release, huh. This last one is a personal complaint for 2018. Stop flooding the market with so much moege. I get that you need to make money and all, but seriously. The amount of companies popping up that have been dedicated to this stale genre is quite appalling. I do respect this company the most though. My many complaints will be saved for later. JAST is my second target and there's a lot to talk about with these guys. So much so that I'll split them up into numbered sections. Make a damn release schedule. This company is the epitome of dropping a VN on people without so much as a release date at times. They're an incredibly unreliable company when it comes to knowing when things will come out. Hence all the memes about them. Check their translations before putting out terrible demos. The Flowers debacle definitely didn't put the company's image in a good light and made us question whether or not Makoto was their only competent translator that they have hired at the moment. Luckily, they added Meru to fix up the next edition in that series. #FreeMakoto Release another worthwile Nitroplus game in this century. They've got such an amazing license in them and it's completely wasted on such a botched company. #FreeMakoto Hire more worthwile translators for their projects. Then maybe we'll get more than 1 or 2 VNs a year from them. Sekai Project. Well well well. There's a lot to complain about here. I'm sure @Barry Benson would agree. Well, let's get on with it. Stop using Kickstarters as a safety net. It shows that they clearly don't believe that the VNs you localize will sell well and that doesn't give VN companies a very good image of them. Make an actual release schedule. Same criticism as with JAST Check their translations. The fact that two botched translations came out in the same month is telling of how much they care about quality, and that needs to change. Manage their localization projects better. It's because of these recent blunders that shine light on how terrible their project management is at the moment. If they're not gonna be able to handle projects well, why get so many licenses? There's no point in handling as many projects as they have when they can't even properly release a quality translation. SoL Press and NekoNyan Soft Make sure to earn our trust. I'm usually extremely pessimistic about new VN localization companies popping up with some sort of ambition and both SoL Press and NekoNyan (God I hate that name) have questionable English in their demos and/or synopsis' and a certain reputation of certain people involved in said new companies. Mikandi is associated with SoL Press and we all know how botched their first release was. NekoNyan has people involved that worked on the botched releases of Saku Saku and Hoshimemo and that makes them untrustworthy to me. Sure, none of these companies have currently released a full fledged VN yet, but it's hard to trust them knowing the reputation behind both companies. If your companies really want to show ambition in your aim to localize VNs, maybe focus on more than just moege. It's hard to see any sort of ambition if all they're trying to localize is something the VN market is already oversaturated with. Even 1 or 2 more VNs with more of a plot emphasis would definitely show me that you're targeting more than just one audience. To me, it's hard to care about a company that only has VNs of one genre planned for release at the moment. I'm hoping they improve on this in the future, but at the moment, this is a major problem with these companies. Well, that took me way too long to write, but my negativity knows no bounds. Post your criticism of VN companies as well because I may have missed some points in my tangents. (I realize that this was a massive waste of time, but oh well)5 points -

What's the most awkward thing to happen to you while reading a VN?

Wow, this thread is pure gold. My story will be super tame compared to some of those above, but stil... I was reading the all-ages Sonohana spin-off, you know, one that doesn't even have much romance in it, and decided to finish it in the morning before my gf wakes up. So, obviously she woke up earlier than usual and walked into my room exactly at the beginning of the only kissing scene in the whole game. Maybe I looked unreasonably engrossed in the romantic conclussion of the story, but the look she gave me nearly made me wish I was cought reading some actual porn. Hmmm... I think I have to go through that scene again, I couldn't really focus when finishing the read that day. :]3 points -

You know, whilst this thread initially brought to mind to people running into me in the midst of an H-Scene, that is likely not the worst situation. When I'm particularly excited reading a VN I act like an absolute madman. I often read the characters' lines aloud, shout, make up new ones, react to them, etcetera. This, unfortunately, is quite audible in my younger sister's room, so she's the person most subjected to my lunacy. My parents occasionally walk by the corridor near my room, and should they catch me in the middle of a fit they sometimes even interrupt to ask me what the bloody hell I'm doing.3 points -

I was reading an H-scene that other time and you could say that I was "engrossed" in it. My older brother walked into my room and he started silently at me and the screen for a full minute or so without saying anything. Then he sat through the whole scene next to me and left when it finished without saying a word. I still see the disappointment in his eyes each time he looks at me.3 points -

My father opened my minimised VN that was in the middle of an H-Scene. His non-reaction makes it seem like he didn't even realise what it was. Could be, since he was looking for something else and immediately minimised it once he realised it wasn't what he was looking for.3 points -

Yes and No! You don't have to force yourself to play all Couples. Just play the ones you like. In Maidens of Micheal you can choose the Routes anyway. Furthermore read A Kiss For The Petals - Remembering How We Met before you start with Maidens of Micheal because it tells the Story how Risa and Miya met and became a couple. Therefore: Read all or the couples you like ---> Remembering how we met ---> Maidens Micheal. Adittionally I would recommend you also to read Sono Hanabira ni Kuchizuke o - New Gen!. I really liked the Sister-Incest-Route. But it isn't a sequel!2 points

The link above is the best route to approach the SonoHana games. While there are not a ton of things you REALLY have to know (because "Maidens of Michael" does a good job reintroducing the couples—enough to help you understand why they are where they are), I would definitely recommend playing all of the games in the order mentioned in that link. "Maidens of Michael", chronologically speaking, does come before "Remembering How We Met" (which is actually a sequel to the as-of-yet untranslated 15th game "Snow White's Knight", which you'll notice a previous Best Couple is missing (Rena/Runa can't be a best couple for reasons you either already know about or will find out in "Maidens of Michael") and has been replaced with a new one) and "New Generation!" "New Generation!" in particular takes place after all of the previous Best Couples (including Sayuki and Rikka) are graduated and off doing whatever it is they decide to do. So there's actually a pretty large time window involved here. Also, if you organize the game releases by date on VNDB, you'll get the same recommended playing order, honestly. "Maidens of Michael" is the eleventh game of the series.2 points

No, that's not what I mean. The promise of a vita release was done when the campaign was still underway. The KS was funded literally 2 years ago. So, what I'm saying is that they should have tried to figure something out during those two years. And, if there was absolutely no physical way for them to release an EU version next to the US version, then this should have been made clear to all backers the moment it was discovered, so that the poor backers who don't get their rewards could file for a refund/ ask for steam keys etc. EDIT: Look at the phrasing of this update made in November of last year. It doesn't mention a single thing about it not being available to all regions, and just hypes the vita backers up for the release. So, it's a huge bomb to drop on people a few weeks before the Vita version launches that only US backers will get it.1 point -

Kiss for the petals order?
Silvz reacted to littleshogun for a topic
In that case, if you start from the first one then you should play sixth one, because the six parts was a sequel to the first one (The couple). So the order for each couple goes like second to fourth (Kaede x Sara), third to fifth (Mai x Reo), seventh to ninth (Takako x Runa), then eighth to tenth (Shizuku x Eris). As for the case whether you started the game in the middle or not, it's quite complicated to explain. But basically the first 10 game explained of how the couple managed to get of how they were right now, so it may be a nice read if you want to know their past. Although if I may suggest, then perhaps you could just play Sono Hanabira 11 without worrying that because the main story was ultimately between Risa and Miya, and read 10 VNs can be quite overwhelming (Feel free to do so though if you wish). As for the Steam version, basically it's the sequel of the later Sono Hanabira but apparently they featured of how both of Risa and Miya met. So maybe it'll be an interesting read as well before reading Sono Hanabira 11, if you felt that you need to read that first. Oh, and I think it's pretty much standalone series even though it's supposed to be the sequel. That's all what I can answer for now, and feel free to ask if you still not clear.1 point -
Doesn't matter, they're mostly self-contained and mostly 100% porn with very little else to it. Some games are the second installment of a previously established pairing, or couples from previous entries briefly appear, though. If you don't like missing out on that stuff, the "right" play order is from 1 to the last.1 point

Hey there, yukatool is a cli tool, so you'll need to call it from the command line The basic syntax is yuka <task> <args> For example to extract one of the game archives you'd write yuka unpack data01.ykc Here, "unpack" is the task you want to perform and "data01.ykc" is the name of the file. For a list of all available tasks, run "yuka help" or refer to the github page. - Atom1 point -

you are already playing subahibi even though you are quite new to VNs wow you have guts (or do you not know what lies ahead of you in the vn lol). Anyways, to answer your question, I recommend the Muv Luv series because not only is its final game (Muv Luv Alternative) the highest rated vn on vndb, it's also one of the most soul crushing and depressing (to date, it's the only vn I've cried to). If you want something a bit more light-hearted, I recommend the Grisaia series. It has a balance of funny and serious moments and Angelic Howl (Amane's route) in Fruit Of Grisaia is just incredible. I would also recommend Sharin no Kuni which is similar to Grisaia, but instead of focusing on characters like how Grisaia does, it focuses more on plot. Other recommendations: G senjou no maou, Ever17, Zero Escape, Danganronpa, Ace Attorney (especially Trials and Tribulations), Steins Gate I wanted to recommend Fate Stay Night but you said you didn't like magic :/1 point -
Shuffle! Essence +
Mr Poltroon reacted to Clephas for a blog entry
Shuffle Essence! + is the definitive version of Shuffle, which was originally released in 2004. Shuffle was also the first game where Agobarrier, the now-deceased writer of the Tiny Dungeon series, made a claim to fame. First, I should note that I originally played Shuffle in English and was not in any way satisfied with the results. My primary reasons were the low quality of the localization (though it was better than what MG had done up to that point) and certain differences with the anime involving Kaede. To be blunt, the Kaede portrayed in the anime is a solid yandere, so I was kind of disappointed that she was only mildly yandere in the game, lol. Anyway, now to the obvious differences between the two versions of Shuffle... Well, the biggest one is the doubling of the number of heroines. Kareha, her sister Tsubomi, Mayumi, Sakura, the teacher Nadeshiko, and the new divine race girl, Daisy are the new heroines. In realistic terms, they actually consist four separate arcs... Tsubomi, Kareha, and Nadeshiko are connected loosely, with the remaining three routes standing on their own with extensive amounts of new text. This is in addition, to adding a second ending onto Shia's path and extensively re-writing it in the particulars. All in all, the length of the game is more than doubled, since the three heroine arcs are very long. Anyway, the new routes show off something that was only touched on lightly in the anime and the original version of the game... Agobarrier's obsession with harems. Basically, the result of each of the paths is that the 'main wife' of the harem gets picked, and the girls basically make the decision to create a harem without seriously consulting Rin, since he isn't good at refusing them in the first place. If you hate harem situations, this game is pure poison, but if you like your harems, this is good stuff. Now, to the difference between the English and Japanese versions... it does make a difference, obviously. Actually, there is a glaring difference in style between the new routes and the ones made for the original game. While the original routes were decent and tear-jerking, it seems like the popularity of Shuffle in Japan essentially gave Agobarrier license to do what he wanted with the new routes. More detail is given (including in the original heroine routes) and more loose ends are closed up. Each of the routes has a number of non-ero CGs unthinkable in a modern charage, and they are all of about as good of quality as could be produced ten years ago, lol. Overall, the end result of this is a vastly-improved game with a much more solid cast of characters. The holdovers from the original version (abandoned stylistic issues like random cameo scenes) are sometimes jarring because of the remade aspects, but the game doesn't suffer too much from that. Daisy's route, which comes across as a 'true' route (since all the might-have-been-fatal heroine issues are resolved) seems to have been specifically designed to satisfy fans of the original who didn't like the feeling that you were 'abandoning' certain of the heroines (such as Primula or Shia) to their fates by picking another. Agobarrier loved his happy harems, lol. May he rest in peace.1 point -

VNs with good romance?
SomethingFunny31 reacted to Crubitz for a topic
Checked out your list and I think I've got one or two good recommendations.` G-Senjou no Maou (Devil on the G-String)- Great and intense story full of mystery and unexpected plot twists, it will keep you on your toes. if you do not shed tears at the end of the main heroine's route you hav no heart, Lol. Yume Miru Kusuri ( A Drug that makes you Dream)- It's a school romance but with none of this cutesy nonsense, the routes have serious problems that need to be dealt with which lead to the birth of beautiful romance. It's a must read. Ever 17, haven't read it yet but I have heard enough to know that it is worth it. Plus no sexual scenes meaning not need to lock the door when your playing (bonus). Katawa Shoujo (The VN that made me a fan of reading VNs), great stories in all routes but Lily"s route (favourite route) is a classic romance story, you'll probably also like Emi's route (she was just too cute). The other routes were great as well though I think Shizune's was the hottest (you'll understand). These VNs have some great romance though there are many others but I have to read them first, good luck.1 point
