Welcome! And like books, reading some VN tend to raise your morale and knowledge in life~ It's good for you and you can say they changed my life for the best, and so it will for you.

I haven't played a lot of VN in total (Maybe about 7 of them), but I can see how difficult it can be when it comes to rating them. Knowing how long Visual Novels can be, it's easy to get addicted to one and then become overly attached to it until completion, and I noticed that there can also be a withdrawal phase in the end that lets you ponder about the great experience. After finishing a great one, you get the feeling that "It's the best one you ever played", but then after a while you realize that it might just be close or just as good as the previous games you played before, which then becomes even harder to classify them. I don't know, so far I find that it can be easy to organize them from best to worst when the plots of recently played VN are still fresh in mind. Our moods and tastes can change over time too, which also complicates classifications. x-x

You can say that I experienced something similar last summer, except I was pretty much in pain when I thought, for a time, I was with my "special someone" just to be shut out when I tried talking to her, and it kept getting worse as the relationship went on. I was in pain for a few weeks as it was hard trying to move on... But I can understand the feeling of not being cared for as the environment does feel different when you're alone. Knowing that you had more trouble to move on than she did makes it obvious that you're more "human" than she is, and that's normally a trait people look for in a person. And I agree with Zodai, after an end to a relationship, focusing on a passion or doing something you always wanted to do but never had the time for can put you back up on your feet rather faster than if you weren't doing anything~ Hope all turns out better sooner rather than later~

It's just sad that about half of the people who get introduced to it get turned down by the graphics ' ^ ' I swear that we forget how the display is from the over-the-top awesome gameplay > < and in my honest opinion, the ASCII graphics are beautiful~

It is, but there's !!SCIENCE!! behind it~

Have any of you heard of or play/played Dwarf Fortress? For any of you who don't know, it's a game that's almost 10 years old and it's also one of the games that inspired Markus (Notch) to make Minecraft. It's a free indie game that's being updated almost yearly (every update offers a lot). There are two types of game modes: Fortress Mode and Adventure Mode. Fortress mode is a simulation game whereas Adventure lives up to a single hero you take control of in a randomly generated world. You can say that it's one of my favourite games of all time and that's probably for the game's details, realistic physics and its random world generator. The graphics aren't its strong point (ASCII Characters), but the gameplay makes up for it tenfold.

Welcome! You can say that I am also a newcomer! ^ ^

A Google survey could be helpful to better determine common preferences in what kind of VN people enjoy playing in general, but it's just unfortunate that it won't be mainstream enough to make a "hit" to simply show a handful of the population that there is such a thing as Visual Novels. It might not be as effective to introduce them to it that way so it's why I was thinking of using Watchmojo since they already have a very large viewership. Disregarding the fact that they do go by votes, a lot of their videos tend to be accurate in the end too. Then again, if Visual Novels were to become more popular, it would still probably be a pain for a popular channel like that to form multiple "Top 10 (Insert Sub-genre Here) Visual Novels" videos since there are not a lot of VN that are not meant for all-ages. I guess a problem like that could make sense. My initial idea was to increase the VN fanbase. There are surely other ways to show and teach what they are rather than letting newcomers accidentally discover them by stumbling, word to mouth or letting them find our online articles and reviews.

Welcome to the community ^ ^! All of the VN's you mentioned are games I've yet to try as I also got into this genre recently. If I could recommended you one, it would be 999. It's what got my hooked on Visual Novels soon after I completed the Phoenix Wright games~

I'm currently reading "Cosmos" by Carl Sagan (A must read) and "A Song of Ice and Fire (The third book called A Storm of Swords).

Aaah~... Good old Square~... I kind of wish they never fused with Enix, but at least we have to be thankful they somehow still exist and they still come out with good games every now and then. I actually miss Squaresoft's Dream Team (And by that I mean the individuals that made Chrono Trigger. They truly were devoted to their work during the golden era of gaming '^' )

I see, I was kind of hoping something like that would have worked. There hasn't been a lot of votes in that genre the last time I looked however, so I'm thinking maybe this community could be a large portion of the opinions. Then again, since they're not well known, I was thinking more about the ones that had good sales and taking into account the success of the most common ones that are available on the market. Maybe it could be the "Top 10 Recommended Visual Novels" or the "Top 10 Translated Visual Novels" (By that I mean official translations).

Thanks! I'm sure it will be nice to share thoughts about the games I'll be playing next. There's been times where I'm in a middle of a very good VN but then I can't make that a main subject to talk about to some friends since some of them might not have played it yet ^ ^;

Watchmojo is a popular channel on youtube that usually uploads "Top 10 (Insert Subject Here)" videos on a daily basis and each video tend to harness quite a lot of views. They upload videos such as: Top 10 Protagonists in Movies Top 10 Retro Games Top 10 JRPG's and many other subjects regarding games, movies, music and more. Their official site is where people can vote for their favourite content on a suggested subject, and if an initial suggestion gets enough thumbs up, there's a chance that a video might be produced based on the top 10 votes. Watchmojo tend to be detailed in what goes into their videos. I'm thinking maybe they'll do a good job at describing what Visual Novels are. From what I saw, there has yet to be a video called the "Top 10 Visual Novels", therefore I'm wondering if anyone would be willing to help form a list of a possible top 10 visual novels or to vote so that we can contribute or provoke Watchmojo to make such a video. I'm also kind of doing this by hoping that 999 gets into that list (this is just a personal opinion, but you can say that I find it to be one of the top 10 best translated Visual Novels). I think if 999 is ever displayed on one of their Top 10's, it could maybe bring more newcomers to the series, raising the chances of having a Zero Escape 3~ But it can mainly help raise awareness of what Visual Novels are; there are a lot of people that never heard of that term or genre. What do you guys think?

I haven't played a lot of VN's yet, but I can recommend three good ones if you're into Science-Fiction and Mystery. I would highly suggest those three: 999 (For the Nintendo 3DS which you can emulate, my personal favourite VN), Ever17, YU-NO (You can say it took more more than 100 hours to finish this one but it was among the best thrills)

Thank you! And really I was going to try Clannad next, probably this weekend as it's apparently well known and also among the top in the EGS score. I do hear good things from it too. Is there voice acting in it? I'm currently learning Japanese (Second Year, Beginner) and I love how much one can learn by playing those games.

Hello, I'm Lexyvil! I'm a French Canadian who recently got into Visual Novels in 2010 through the Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney series. I stumbled on Fuwanovel just about a month ago in search of a recommended game: Ever17, which I completed a few weeks ago and I recently finished the god awesome YU-NO just a few days ago (I'm still in my mindblown state by it). I'm looking for other great visual novels of that caliber and I thought maybe I should take part of this community to better understand every other genre.
