  1. I'm hyped for Chaos;Child way more than I probably should be. Oh yeah, also really curious about those Grisaia VNs. I'm tempted to just attempt to read it right now, but Kajitsu scared me away with its seeminlgy advanced language.
  2. Didn't enjoy the regular routes as much, but I loved Refrain as well! Also, I might be crazy, but I liked the ending before the true ending better, how about you? And slightly off-topic, but how was Kotori's route? I did Ageha's, since I wanted to see the childhood friend win for once, and it was pretty nice, though nothing too amazing. I will have to get around to the other routes too, eventually, but it just feels like I've finished the story already.
  3. I wasn't that blown away either, hah. At least UBW and HF are better... or well, just different. Fate/Zero is pretty damn awesome, though. That should've been the VN instead.
  4. Oh, great tip! I will have to check those out - I've loved the Nitro+ things I've read so far, Saya no Uta probably being the best example. I really want to read Muramasa since I hear great things about that, but my Japanese is nowhere near a good enough level for that.
  5. I'm king of forcing my way into Cross+Channel at the moment. I don't like the character designs or the MC so far, but since I've just read a few scenes, I can't really judge it yet. I have no doubts it gets better later on, just need to get to that point. Other than that, I'm making my way through Kimi ga Nozomu Eien at a snail's pace. Originally picked up the VN just so I could avoid the anime and go straight for Hayase (dat MLA influence), but they're making the Takayuki x Suzumiya pairing so damn adorable that I can't even stick to the original plan anymore. The VN is nice so far, though everything was going too nicely for some time... I expect something horrible to happen really soon, probably the main crux of the story, which almost makes me scared to continue reading. Man I wish I could forget everything about LB! and replay it again. You have a lot to look forward to, I would go as far as to say that there are some things that hit even harder than Clannad.
  6. Haha, I like how this is pretty much the exact opposite of what I do - I always let characters finish, and I absolutely hate when I accidentally skip over someone's line. Though this probably has to do with me learning Japanese? I can understand what the characters are saying most of the time, and even when I didn't before, I was still at least catching words here and there... but if it just sounded like nonsense to me, I'd probably skip it too... I think. I'm not sure, and that's what makes this so interesting.
  7. I'm planning on checking out Remember11 eventually, at the very least. Any other noteworthy titles in the series? If I was to drop the mystery aspect already, how about just some VNs that are pretty dark in general? I'm just wondering if I'm still missing out on some sort of a popular title. I think I've read most of them already, but you never know...
  8. Wow, I know you said the translation wasn't very good, but the "sempai" is bothering me way more than it should... also the MC, eh. Having a hard time getting into this, so I hope it'll be worth it.
  9. Since I have a little sister in real life (6 years younger than me), I'll never be able to understand the whole siscon deal, but as long as the VN lets me pick a different heroine, I'll give it a read.
  10. Whether they suffer by the lack of voice acting or not, I think we can all agree that they're always better with voices (unless they do a horrendous job at it, of course). Umineko was also one of the VNs that worked perfectly fine without voice acting, but damn is it better with them in the PS3 remake.
  11. Well, I'm hoping the Grisaia anime will eventually happen - that, and ReWrite, since that got me really hyped for how it would look animated. It'd be really hard to do, though, since the routes are completely incompatible with each other - so I don't really trust anyone with it. From what I've played recently, I guess Disorder6 could have a neat anime adaptation. It's mostly linear (just with some endings branching off like in S;G, which could be ignored). A heroine with a split-personality disorder would make for an entertaining watch. Agreed, it'd make for some nice competition to the like of Death Note and Code Geass.
  12. Wow, I can't even imagine Steins;Gate without voices. This is exactly one of the examples where the voicing of a main character helped tremendously.
  13. I cry rather easily, and I have a sneaking suspicion that visual novels and anime somehow made me that way. If I'm to count the ones that made me cry the most, however, then it'd probably be Clannad, for making me cry repeatedly throughout the story and Little Busters! which completely destroyed me with the ending. G-Senjou's epilogue moved me to tears as well, with that wonderful music and conclusion. Though honestly, mostly everything I've read made me tear up one way or the other.
  14. Well, since there's an awesome topic like this, it definitely wouldn't hurt to add something to my backlog. Genre: utsuge, mystery, horror... anything along these lines, though I prefer the darker stuff Linguistic level (from 1-10): Not sure about this one. I've recently read Disorder6 and had almost no difficulty with it (well, I did look up the words I didn't know, of course; and skipped quite some of the unvoiced lines because looking up the kanji took too much time--), and I also made my way through Dunamis15 somehow, though that was pretty hard with the sciientific lingo. I'm still pretty horrible with kanji, although that can be fixed with text-hookers. So... 5-6 I guess? No idea. Stimulus preferred: Emotion is great, but mind-screw above anything else. What is your list of no-nos?: I can get over mostly anything. Other: Voiced protagonists are a big plus, since it makes the VN both easier to understand and adds more depth.
  15. I've played DanganRonpa, Kara no Shoujo and Rewrite. Remember11 sounds good, I've loved Ever17 and Virtue's Last Reward. Though I've heard Remember11 is perhaps a bit too open-ended, so I'm kind of wary. Definitely will check it out someday, though.
  16. Psycho? Sounds good to me - looks like I'm reading that first. And even worse translations are still a nice break from constantly looking up kanji.
  17. Awesome, thanks! I'll definitely have to check these out. Haha, yeah. I've thoroughly enjoyed Umineko, one of my favourite VNs out there. As for the thriller/psychological horror thing, I really like that as well - I've absolutely loved the first half of Chaos;Head for that same reason. I'm always looking for VNs like that as well. Now that I look at my list again, I've never really started Cross+Channel properly. Is that a good read? Might get that out of the way first, since I should probably still have it on my phone. Loved G-Senjou and S;G as well. Whatever that genre is, I really like it.
  18. So, I'm reading Kimi ga Nozomu Eien, but thanks to the incredibly slow pace and the constant crashing, I'm taking my time with it, reading it in short bursts. That leaves the VN kind of off to the side, so I was wondering if you guys could recommend me some kind of a VN that just grabs your interest and won't let go? Something not purely romance-focused this time, though I definitely don't mind that element at all. I've recently read Dunamis15 and Disorder6, is there anything in a similar vein? Something in English would be great, so I could take a breather from my Japanese struggles, though if there is something exceptionally good that wasn't translated yet, feel free to recommend that as well. I'm looking for anything interesting, really. Here's what I've read already. Higurashi should be there as well, though I've never had the chance to read the whole thing, as I watched the anime and read the manga instead. Thanks for the help!
  19. I prefer voiced protagonists as well. Even in the "get a girl" VNs, as Kaguya called them, the MCs usually have some sort of a personality at least. They have a name, they act a certain way, so they should be treated like a character just like any other. I mean, sometimes, they can be very distinct, like Yuuji in Grisaia no Kajitsu, for example - yet that character has no voice acting either, for some reason. I used to think this was because of h-scenes, but then again, the female characters are voiced, so that wouldn't make much sense anyway. Partial voice acting is even more bizzare than no voice acting at all. Sure, there are VNs that use it to their advantage (G-Senjou), but then there are ones where it makes absolutely no sense, at least not to me. Take Rewrite, for example - given how good the voiced parts were, why didn't the voice the rest as well? Or Muv Luv (Alternative), that was even weirder. Is this really about money? Would it really kill them to have some more of the lines voiced?
  20. Yep, sounds exactly like what I'm experiencing. It crashes quite often, but I suppose it is readable at the very least. Just have to save very often.
  21. Recently, I've finished Dunamis15 and Disorder6. Loved Disorder6, definitely my favourite VN last year - having a heroine with multiple personality disorder makes things both scary and hilarious at the same time, plus it was like having several characters in one. Loved it. Dunamis15 was pretty good as well, though the resolution of the story left a lot to be desired. As for right now, just started reading Kimi ga Nozomu Eien, after I randomly stumbled across the anime. Seeing Hayase and Suzumiya in there was one of the most bizzare and awesome mindfucks I've ever experienced - I had absolutely no idea that some of the characters in Muv Luv: Alternative actually came from Kimi ga Nozomu Eien, so I found the other way around. It was like some sort of reverse-cameo... what an experience! Got so excited that I couldn't even finish the first episode and went for the VN instead-- the new re-release, Latest Edition.
  22. I was personally quite disappointed with the ending. Or rather, with the climax, I should say - the VN seemed to build up so many things before the final missiong, yet it seemed like the writers suddenly realized they had no more time and took the easiest way out of the problems they presented. It felt incredibly rushed and painfully convenient... I don't know, maybe getting so hyped by the story was a good thing, but I feel like there was quite a lot of wasted potential in there. I did like the final scene, though; it was a fitting conclusion. I might have to read Altered Fable someday.
  23. I've read through Extra/Unlimited before going for Alternative, and I'm glad I did. It probably would be possible to understand it even without doing so, but I feel like it would lose a lot of depth, especially when it comes to the characters. That, and the shift in tone from Extra to Alternative is, at least for me, one of the best parts about the trilogy, so it'd be a great shame to miss out on that experience.
  24. Hi, I'm not sure if this belongs here, since this VN isn't translated, but I'm not sure where else to ask. I have a rather strange problem - the VN works like a charm, except for the times it decides to randomly shut down. There are no error messages, the game just suddenly quits. At first, I thought this might have somehting to do with the text-hooker, but running the VN on its own led to the same result. The only sign that something went wrong appears when I launch the VN again - it offers to run the VN in a safe mode, which, if I understand it right, disables all the audio and what not. Does anyone know how to find out just what exactly causes this crash? It happens at random intervals, at random places. I'm running Windows 8.1 64bit (had the same issue with Win8), and I'm using the Locale Emulator to launch the VN. The engine is rUGP 5.8. I've read Muv Luv Extra and Alternative before, and I didn't have this issue. I'm sorry for the vague info, just not sure what else to add.
  25. Just got myself to finally read Kanon the other day, finished one route there so far. Also started Cross Channel, but judging by the beginning, I might have a hard time getting into that--the MC left a bad first impression. D: I’m also reading Narcissu in-between, since it’s supposed to be short, while I have Higanbana on hold. I should also get done with the last two routes in Katawa Shoujo... and on top of that, I started reading Umineko again just for the hell of it. This can’t be good, I need to finish some of the VNs quick. @@ As for the most recently finished VN, that’d be Kara no Shoujo. Amazing VN, had a lot of fun with that one. Except for the hunt for the true end.
