Conjueror's Untranslated Visual Novel Tournament [Discussion]
Darklord Rooke replied to Maxel's topic in Visual Novel Talk
You’re probably referring to those shounen titles that tend to be boring and overrated (haha, don't hunt me down fellas, I'm armed, clumsy, and dangerous to everybody around me...) Dies Irae is lauded mostly for it’s narration. You lose all that in an anime, though. -
I'm glad someone said it.

Filling cups forever. Well, working as a scullery maid can be mind-numbingly tedious I suppose. To make it more bearable, what you should do is develop mental exercises to while aw- ... Ohhh, you’re talking about something different ... Carry on, then.

I didn't say it wasn't reasonable, just debatable Yeah, the 'And One More Project to be Potentially announced soon' section is a pretty big give away. Then you look back up and start noticing all the little things. The bolded bit is not able to be determined by the actual update. Also, anything a company releases in its actual name reflects upon the company itself. Something signed by 'The Muv Luv' team reflects upon 'The Muv Luv' team. Anything a PR person writes for the company reflects upon that company, especially if it's an official update *shrugs*. I don't think it's a major concern, not to me anyway, but it's probably a tad unprofessional I suppose.

Generally speaking, anime characters have become less detailed over the past few decades. In the 80s the art it was pretty good, these days not so much. Aspiring to make art like the Japanese do therefore doesn't make sense to me. Your art is fine, and I really don't care if it alienates veteran fans of TL'd VNs or not.

Reinforcing the beautiful myths about katanas
Darklord Rooke replied to Darklord Rooke's topic in General Discussion
Another point to note: Why do we idolise katana when the katana was a samurai's THIRD choice of weapon on the battlefield? They'd go for their bow, they'd go for their spear, then they'd go for their katana. And this is a critical point. Swords were developed in Europe to be a knight's primary form of weapon. They CAN use a spear, but they can just as feasibly wield a greatsword. There was a sword for any different purpose. "Oh my, my enemy's in armour, well I'll go with a greatsword with a whopping great point." Alternatively "oh my, my opponent wants me to duel with him one-on-one unarmoured. Nothing my trusty rapier can't defend against." Whereas katanas could only fight a certain kind of opponent ... and not on horseback ... and not if other specific conditions weren't met. It's very limited. Furthermore, because it was a hard sword, and not a soft sword like in Europe, it can crack and chip easily if hitting a surface that wasn't soft (that is, wasn't flesh or leather.) So where did these myths about katanas come from? They aren't light, they don't stab very well, they're short, they're brittle, they're not very balanced, they don't guard very well, they don't have much variety due to being single bladed, they weren't the first choice of weapon on the battlefield ... so, wouldn't you prefer a trusty longsword instead? Vs Disclaimer: These pictures are inserted by an unbiased and fair soul. -
IMO as an ardent RPG fan, the gameplay is very sub-par. And the gameplay out of combat borders on being abysmally tedious and purposeless. Never saw what was special about the story, tbh.

Philistine! Heathen! But on a serious note, I quite enjoyed Pillars of Eternity and the Shadowrun games. Furthermore we're going to get an awesome Battletech game because of KS, a game true to its tabletop roots, so I disagree with you spectacularly concerning KS.

Then you're not looking hard enough. There are professional authors that are EVN devs (there's a very nice, short adaption of a classic Russian fairytale, for example) and there are EVN devs that make sims of the complexity which exceeds those which come from Japan. Obviously the best stuff are products which take a different route than traditional Japanese VNs, but there's good stuff there if you know where to look. But even if they aren't yet of the quality of AAA Japanese VNs, generalising them all as pathetic is more than a tad harsh. It takes a lot of money to fund stuff with AAA qualities.

I'm looking forward to Bats scoring Angel Beats 1/10 purely for the salt ...
-
Don't generalise, please.

Ignore him and let him rant. Taosym's arguments on Twitlonger miss the point, and his responses on the story/writing on twitter are either laughingly ignorant or he's being intentionally dense.

Seemed fine to me (although I wasn't scouring the thing for spelling errors.) Questions were nice, designed to give decent feedback, and quite neutral. Doesn't take much effort yet leaving room for bigger responses for people who are ... 'keen'. Decent survey, it would be better if there was a cookie and a cup of coffee waiting for participants at the end, but well ... you can't have everything I suppose. Oh btw, I've cunningly disguised my responses so you won't know which survey is mine. It will be the metaphoric hay within the haystack, just another fruit in the fruit bowl, indistinguishable from the rest

RPGs are quite similar to sims, which in turn are related (historically) to VNs. Now, the main difference between an CRPG and a sim is the inclusion of a combat system. Technically in the offline world you can have RPGs without a combat system. I doubt anyone wants me to go into detail about why this isn't the case in CRPGs, but in short CRPGs historically only sought to imitate the combat systems of offline RPGs, while this was happening sims grew and incorporated many attributes of offline RPGs, and these days an RPG without a combat system tends to be called a sim. Examples include 'Long Live the Queen' and 'Academagia'. Questing and mini-games don't make an RPG. They're sometimes found in RPGs, but you could argue that this is because RPGs came from a background of 'user defined stories.' In fact, some people define an RPG to be a form of interactive narrative. VNs can also be a form of 'user defined story' because at its heart it's a form of interactive fiction - the choices in a story offer opportunities for this sort of interactivity, but this is an aspect that the Japanese industry doesn't really take full (or any) advantage of (to my disappointment, and probably to the medium's detriment.) Because RPGs and VNs can both offer 'user defined stories' then naturally some aspects of one can be applied to the other. I don't see evidence of a combat system in the game, and therefore I don't see evidence that it is an RPG. It COULD be a graphic adventure, but graphic adventures are games with a) a narrative, b) puzzles, and c) exploration.

You're talking about those 3 medium/short novels by the beloved creator of Spice and Wolf, right? What was wrong with the first 2? :S -
WEE Episode 3 - Sekai Project's Unwanted Child
Darklord Rooke replied to Nosebleed's topic in Visual Novel Talk
They've recently put out an abomination of a kickstarter, with no worthwhile high tiers and few rewards, corrected their position in only the last 7 days of the campaign, and still look to raise the 150,000 or whatever it is they need with thousands of people donating. This doesn't seem to me as a company who's stock is plummeting. People will point to a transgender, boy love kickstarter as 'proof' of the community's feelings against Sekai, but these people are either being disingenuous or they're naive. Boy love is niche within a niche, and the transgender aspect partly negates that niche, so it was always going to fail (imo.) WE3 is regrettable, but Batman here has the right of it. They haven't actually had any failures yet, and the hardcore communities 'angst' hasn't materialised into anything worthwhile. So either a) the hardcore community isn't as powerful as they think or b) it's only a small, but noisy portion of the hardcore community. The latest game they're publishing is some 2d weird actiony RPG game, and not at all a VN which is interesting. Sekai need to get their act together on WE3 though. They've definitely made some mistakes. -
What Video Games Are You Playing Right Now?

Early on in the game I made the sacrifice and forked out LOTS of cash just so I could finish the dungeons in one day. Probably not totally wise, but ... Steam is not special, its just another website
Darklord Rooke replied to firecat's topic in General Discussion
You already identify where you went wrong, so there's not much else for anyone to add. 'Largest impact' in no way means 'guaranteed success'. To say these two sentences are conflicting in nature is very, very wrong. It has been suggested, without much in the way of reasoning or evidence. 20 developers not being able to find success on Steam in no way counters Decay That's nice. Also completely irrelevant. Serving no purpose. Useless in nature. Unconnected to the points being discussed. Tangential. Inapposite. Inappropriate. And unimportant. The idea that people visiting Steam behave badly doesn't show what you want it to show. It's very sad. The next stage of Indie development on Steam will be interesting. Far too many Indies making titles looking for quick money, and Steam's letting them all on. With Indies suddenly not being as financially rewarding, and some making comprehensive losses, that suggests an Indie crash coming soon, but we've been expecting it for a few years now and it hasn't come ...
