What differentiate a VN from other games with dialogues/texts
Darklord Rooke replied to GLM4475's topic in Visual Novel Talk
That’s fair enough, but if the term Visual Novel is being used to refer to all such novels regardless of whether they contain choices, and Kinetic Novel is used to refer to only those VNs without choices, then I would suggest that a term also be required to refer to only those with choices. -
What differentiate a VN from other games with dialogues/texts

Interactive Storytelling is defined by Crawford (he wrote a book) as being the process where a story is created out of the actions of the player - decision by decision, moment by moment, scene by scene. It is clear that Visual Novels are a subgenre of the Interactive Storytelling genre (KNs are not though.) It is also clear that the genre of Interactive Storytelling describes STORYTELLING techniques, and not gameplay. If a game has only VN storytelling techniques, then it is a Visual Novel. If the gameplay is also an attraction, then it's a game which contains VN storytelling techniques. “Visual Novels” have 3 things. 1) They are novels and should be written as such. Therefore they must contain a narrative prose 2) They present choices to the user through the narrative (or dialogue,) these choices allows the user to affect the story. This is different to allowing the user to affect the narrative through gameplay decisions 3) They contain images which depict the setting of each scene of the story. If the game does not contain images which depict each scene of the story, then it might be Interactive Fiction (which conform to the first 2 of the above rules, but not the third.) On the other hand if the game does not contain choices, it might be a kinetic novel. If it doesn’t contain narrative prose, than describing it by its parent genre (an interactive story) might be appropriate. Fuwa’s future database of games may include those games which are so similar to VNs that they’re commonly mistaken as such (properly labelled of course.) It does seem to be what the consumer wants. -

It's pretty unprofessional. Also I can feel that dev smirking and laughing from the other side of the internet. The dev's a cock, but it's their game and they can do what they want. -

police officer in trouble for using a clannad meme
Darklord Rooke replied to krill's topic in General Discussion
I really don't know how it was leaked to the media. All I've managed to find so far is: "Unfortunately, he got too excited as the conversation was revealed in an ongoing investigation into text message scandals with the police department.." -

Employers do try and ensure their workplace is free from inappropriate behaviour, even if things are a private communication. Which is why private emails sent from or to work computers between work colleagues so regularly find their way to court. If you want to behave inappropriately in a private setting, don't use employer regulated communication devices. -
Not very different at all actually. There are those who write with and outline and those who let the story dictate where it goes, and obviously there are those who land somewhere in the middle of those extremes. Terry Pratchett, for example, would jot down 10,000 words without knowing what the story was even about *shrugs.* Interesting read though

police officer in trouble for using a clannad meme

The officer spent a single 10 hour shift without pay, which is fair enough. At the end of the day the term nigger was used to denigrate and lower a group of citizens for centuries, and the use of that term will cause explosive confrontations, especially if an older African-American is involved. Policemen should know this, and shouldn't be sending that image to or from city-owned phones. That behaviour is not appropriate in public, and the man is a servant of the Government and the community. You can muck around with your friends in private, or as an anonymous individual on the internet, but there are boundaries placed on your behaviour at work or when you're out in the community, and it's good to be aware that there are always consequences to your actions. The suspension wasn't a harsh one, it was just a wake-up call that he was stepping over that line. It shouldn't have been released to the media though... -

You have to head to Urban Dictionary for a representation of how people tend to use it: Melodrama - Exaggerated emotion and hyperbole. http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=melodrama

Share your Impressions of TRD: Toko, Episode 0

The market comes once you combine the VN structure with gameplay, ala The Banner Saga. VNs don't appeal to book readers, because of technology and other reasons, and the easiest way of appealing to gamers is by incorporating gameplay. It would be awesome if VNs could appeal to novel readers one day, but that's going to be hard when they're chained to the PC. Or you could have the production values to make it an interactive movie-telling experience, ala Telltale studios. I'll give this game a whirl very soon. Looks interesting! -

Relaxing in the evening with a cup of tea and a good book :3 -
No, not because I have a problem with reviews I just never found anybody who's willing to go into enough depth and/or talk about the stuff I want to know. I found a community or two of RPG gamers instead who's tastes are attuned to my own (RPG Watch, and its 4-chan equivalent the Codex )
