Would people actually buy LN ebooks from amazon?
EcchiOujisama replied to Dark Ariel7's topic in General Discussion
My point is, that unless you actually have a track record of selling a lot of books, they expect you to fully pay for the advertising and marketing. If the only expenses covered by the publisher are printing and the editor, I'm better off paying that out of pocket and keeping 100% of the profits instead of 10%. I hate paperbacks, and find it insane that publishers expect me to pay $10-20 for a fucking paperback. It's a massive ripoff. I can't understand the need for crappy hardcovers or trade paperbacks. Run 10 or 20,000 and you're looking at less than $2 per book in printing costs. My agent and I agree that they're just fucking cheap and that's why you see so many overpriced paperbacks and crappy hardcovers. And yeah, if you move a ton of products a publisher will organize all kinds of things for you that will allow you to make more money than you will on your own, but like I said, you need to be at the very top of the top for that to be more profitable for you as the author. The main reason to use a traditional is for the vanity of being able to say "I was published by HarperCollins!" or the like. To some people it's worth making less money to be able to say that, and if that's your priority, more power to you. All I'm saying is in today's market a traditional book deal is a terrible deal for an author who isn't going to be a mega bestseller or has to financially support the launch of the book anyway. With all the time and hassle you go through to get an agent you can hit the Amazon bestseller list on your own. -
Majikoi A Translation Project Discussion

Loli = crime. When Yamato becomes Prime Minister and fixes that rotten country mosaics and loli will finally take their rightful place in the dustbin of history. Since we've been talking about Minato Soft's release schedule...when the hell is Maji de Miyako ni Koishinasai! going be released?!?! I was promised 48 H scenes with Miyako, after which my brain won't be able to tell the difference between the game and reality and I'll start doing H things with Miyako in real life. If they maji de want my 10,290 yen it's high time they put some effort into it! -
Wait...Grisaia is grounded in reality? I've only seen the anime, but that seems like a bit of a stretch of anyone's reality. Momoyo's ki attacks are at least theoretically possible, even though masters of that level are few and far between. I found Bunny Black highly enjoyable and normal, within the confines of its own world. The story definitely sucked me in, and NG+ kept me coming back. May be a little too far removed from reality. So in that case, how about a classic? Give Tokimeki Check-In! a go. It's plausible, light and fun. Plenty of heroines, an onsen, a maid, what more do you want? Oh yeah, gameplay. In that case, Utawarerunomono should deliver on all fronts. Not too unbelievable, good gameplay and H content.

I refuse to buy anything with DRM out of principle. I don't mind paying for content, but I'm only paying once. My issue is having to choose between print and digital copies. I like holding a real book in my hand, but I also like the convenience of 500 books fitting on my Kindle with ease. Unless you're extremely small time (i.e. printing less than 10,000 at a time), the cost of printing a book is incredibly inexpensive. All the talk of killing trees et. al. comes down less than $2 per book on a 500 page hardcover with a nice color jacket. eBooks take a bite out of publisher's profits (assuming you would have paid full price for the hardcover, because of course you would buy $25 hardcover for $25 if you bought a $2.99 eBook in publisher logic). With many books from commercial publishers being about half of the hardcover price on Kindle the publisher makes considerably less per sale, and whether that affects the author's royalty is dependent on the deal your agent cut with the publisher. Knowing how much larger the profit margin is I kinda feel you should just give me the Kindle download if I want it along with a new hardcover purchase to thank me for keeping the publisher in business. I'm not paying twice on principle. But honestly, I see no reason to use a traditional publisher anymore. Unless you're a nonfiction author with the fanbase of an Ann Coulter or move novels in Harry Potter quantity with considerable bookstore numbers selling on Kindle will net the author more money. I make MORE per sale on a $2.99 Kindle book than I do on a $25 hardcover, and that assumes you're one of the suckers who paid cover price for the hardcover. If you pay considerably less, I likewise make less. With publishers wanting ME to fork out all of the money and effort to market the book anyway, why I should them keep 90% of the profit? -
I don't know if this is something that would be of interest to anyone but me, but I'll throw it out to see if anyone else would find interest in it. I've been on the path of 1000 suburi for 1000 days and am only 42 days away from hitting 1000. Miyamoto's classic tome has been resonating more and more and making sense in ways it didn't previously. When swinging the sword with an audio version on the background I got the wacky idea to present it in the form of a VN for the information to engage my brain in a different way. Would anyone want to experience the book in this format? I was thinking on something along the lines of ripping graphics out of something and have Kendo practitioners present the text, and come up with a way of incorporating an audio version I have (possibly as "you" repeating it as the narrator is male), and inserting appropriate audio meditations when Musashi tells you to meditate on issues. So in general, is this something that would appeal to anyone other than me, or am I just jerking myself off with this?

I recently went through the main Muv Luv games (Extra, Unlimited, Alternative) back-to-back, so I'll give you the low down on this whole deal. How much you read before Alternative is largely up to you and your preferences. To start with, the first two games of the series, Extra and Unlimited, are packaged together. In order to get access to Unlimited you must clear the Meiya and Sumika routes in Extra. There are three other routes in Extra, and honestly, even though I like Iinchou and Ayamine a lot as characters, the story they decide to tell is largely something I didn't want to see. From a storyline standpoint I actually liked Tama's route, even though the thought of doing an H scene with her makes me throw up a bit in my mouth. I would still suggest you play every route in Extra. Why? The characters introduced in these routes will show up in Alternative, and their appearance and roles will make far more sense. I also loved the "bad" end with Marimo, which I thought was awesome and wouldn't call a bad end at all. It answers a nagging question I had throughout the VN as well. While we're talking about the world of Muv Luv Extra, this happens in the same world as Kimi ga Nozomu Eien. There are several tie ins with KimiNozo. As it is only in the beginning of being translated, and is one of the longest VNs of all time, it's probably not an option if your kanji isn't at JLPT level 1. I would say watching the TV series is absolutely necessary. You should actually watch it before playing Extra as one of the characters from Kiminozo has a good amount of screen time. Watch Second Season is you want, and watch Akane Maniax after you play Extra for a chance to see some Muv Luv characters in anime. AyuMayu Theater will make far more sense after you play Alternative, so wait on that one. Unlimited is a different story. All of the routes are the same and the choices you make have almost no impact on the story. Instead of event A happening with character A, you could manipulate it into being character B with enough of the right choices, but the differences are minor. There is no reason to play the game more than once unless you want to see the H scene of another character. The endings are all EXACTLY the fucking same, to the point that it doesn't feel true to the characters. It's done to plant seeds for Alternative and it makes sense now in retrospect, but it drags on a LOT when playing for 100% and felt like a big fuck you from the writer to the fanbase IMO. I'd suggest making choices that seem like they will maximize time with your favorite character and to play Alternative before going through the game again. Clearing it to 100% after the first character was brutal. Alternative is extremely linear. The choices you make have only a minor impact on the story, and after going back through it to see what would happen with all of the opposite choices, there's basically no difference. The game gives you a big middle finger by having zero benefits after clearing the game. No soundtracks. No CG gallery. Nothing. It's like "Oh, you just forked over 60 hours of your life and thought that would let you listen to the game's music? Well fuck you." There are only 2 H scenes in the whole game, and they're both with a character I wouldn't even want to bang in real life. Now that I've said all of the bad parts about it, on the whole it's really great. Just about everything I didn't like in Extra and Unlimited tied into the story and paid off in a way that made sense. The effects that they pull off are visually stunning. While the others would have points where the story was interesting and would then drag, this went more than 10 hours before it even came close to slowing down once. The more you pay attention to little details in the prior games the more you are rewarded in Alternative. Alternative doesn't expect you to remember every hint about the way things might go and reminds you of lines here and there when foreshadowing is paid off. As you go farther into Alternative you'll be glad you at least watched KimiNozo as a lot of characters from Kimizono appear, and are true to the characters you've come to know. There aren't a lot of areas that are light-hearted in this one, but it will grab you by the balls and not let go for hours at a time. The ending is certainly divisive, you'll probably love or hate it, but the ending of the ending gave me huge blue balls for Altered Fable. I can't wait to play it. For other Muv Luv games that are translated, Haruko Maniax could be played anywhere as long as you don't play it first. It's...kinda weird and kinda gross when you consider where the H scenes come from. Shows you a softer family side of Haruko if you want to see it, but nothing lost if you don't. Chronicles vol.1 is also translated and should be played after Alternative. It's all new characters though and further expands the world after Alternative ends.

I casually mentioned that playing this AWESOME little April Fool's joke made me want to get inside Tsujidou-san's long skirt, and I suddenly got PMs asking where I got it. As if it were some kind of secret. So for anyone who didn't know this was translated and wants to play it, Shakadou-san no Jun'ai Road is available in English and Japanese here: https://visuallyneko.wordpress.com/visual-novel-downloads-windows/shakadou-san-no-junai-road-for-windows/ There are no H scenes, however it does explain how Shakadou-san got his amazingly awesome high paying real job in Majikoi S.
