My quest for comfort. The best way to read VNs "like a book".
ciel_yuri replied to ciel_yuri's topic in Visual Novel Talk
Netbooks can be sort of comfy. I recently bought one on ebay that was "like new" for only $42 after shipping. The battery doesn't last as long as I'd like, but every VN I've tried on it so far runs well and it's kind of neat having a dedicated VN PC. -
You can do it! The PSP one is called PPSSPP. I think people are working on a Vita one, but I'd just ignore that for now as i doubt it does much.

Yeah, sadly my eyes are already pretty messed up. I used to have close to perfect vision, but after getting my first PC things started going downhill. The thing is I can still see things when they're close enough like a handheld, so it's been nice to be able to take my glasses off for awhile when using one. I think my next pair I need to add anti glare coating or something, because on a PC or driving at night I see reflections like crazy. It's extremely annoying and distracting. I'm not sure if you've tried it, but Flux has been a lifesaver. I actually really like that yellowish glow it changes things to. When I was playing a VN at sunset or night it would feel so much cozier and easier on the eyes. Now I just have it set it up so it's always on. Things feel pretty blinding without it. -
You're having trouble getting one working? I've never tried it, but I hear the PSP one works great. If you do get something working there's a lot of stuff that might be of interest to you. When I bought a Vita I was amazed by the amount of JRPGs that it had access to with the PS1 and PSP games included.

Did you try it? I wonder if it would feel disorienting. It sounds like it could be awesome, but I think I'd be way to scared to try it. Maybe if I had a professional install it, so I knew I wasn't gonna suffer from death by falling television -

I'm not sure how comfortable that would be, but it is a cool idea. It's just sort of the opposite of the convenience of a book Sometimes I actually do something like that. I might have to look into the presentation clicker. I was using a wiimote thing, but those things eat batteries really fast, so I'm mainly been using a wired 360 controller nowadays. How is the presentation clicker's battery life? I take it it is wireless? I actually just bought a "Steam Link" to dabble with that. They were just discontinued and heavily discounted. If anyone is interested there's some available in the U.S. for $2.50+S&H https://store.steampowered.com/app/353380/Steam_Link/ -

I've been going back and forth wondering if I should buy one this Christmas or wait until a new model gets released (or just put that money towards something else) and it does seem like it might be a good idea to wait. It's been rumored that there might be a new model released summer 2019 already and if they release one noticeably smaller or lighter I might come to regret not waiting. Everything I do seems like its been translated from Japanese, so I've certainly been considering it. I'm just worried how my memory will fair for it's written languages. I feel like I understand a fair amount and have a grasp at the language from all the Japanese media I consume. Written it just seems so intimidating. Really if I buy a GPD Win or Switch or something I'd have way more options in English and in Japanese. I just kinda wouldn't mind something else to tide me over either way, I guess. Since learning it would take awhile. -

Yeah, I've tried playing some on an android tablet and kept running into stupid little issues. For instance in Air it sometimes doesn't select the choice I've highlighted and I have to keep reloading the game. I couldn't get games to load off of the SD card either, so managing them was kind of a pain. It's nice there's ways to play these on Android, but in my experience it just didn't feel like it was made to be played that way and made me want something better. I have been considering learning Japanese. There's still plenty of VNs for PC available in English, but if I knew Japanese there would be so many I'd love to grab on Vita or Switch. Plus all the other doors it opens. Yeah, I think a lot of developers are gonna capitalize on Switch's growing install base. Is it comfy to hold for long periods of time? I'd imagine it would be much better than a tablet because it's smaller and has controls to use as "handles". I just wonder how many the Switch gets will be translated to English. Which brings me back to the "if I only knew Japanese" again. -
I own a PS Vita and I love the comfort it provides for VNs. Being able to recline in bed and hold the system in front of me and read a VN like I would a regular book has quickly become my favorite way to read VNs. The problem is that I'm running out of titles I'm interested in that are available in English. These are the options I know of and some of my considerations so far. If anyone has any experience with these or know of any other options I'd love to hear about them. Windows Tablet - The cheapest option as one can easily be found for under $100, but holding a tablet for long periods of time might not be very comfortable. Only having a touchscreen also seems like it could pose problems as well. Nintendo Switch - It's reasonably priced and I wanted one for regular games anyway. But my English VN options will probably be very limited / I'll be in the same boat as I am with the PS Vita and run out way too fast. GPD Win - The best looking option, as it's a fairly powerful windows PC in handheld form... but a new one is $440.

I found your series awhile ago randomly searching Castbox for VN podcasts. As you can imagine there wasn't many and I think this was about the only one that wasn't dead. I was a little apprehensive at first, learning that it came from Reddit, but the episodes I've listened to sound quite professional and I've enjoyed them. Anyway, I hope you guys keep at this. VN related podcasts are far too few. Thank you for your work. I look forward to listening to this one.

Maybe Seinarukana or Utawarerumono or something?
-
Thanks, I'm definitely gonna refer to this when I restart. Not beating it has been a regret of mine, so this time I will.

I didn't remember reading that part, but if it did that's good. I still don't agree that you should read V3 before you die though. (Maybe after, depending what VNs you have access to, I guess :p)
-
Yeah, for a list like this I'd agree the first one is a way better choice. That way if someone likes it they can play the others instead of being spoiled and wondering what's going on.

I got stuck on a late game mission, got mad, decided to take a break, and just never came back to it. I wish I did though. It was an excellent game, so I'll definitely give it another try someday. The art in it is so good. (I wanna give the Langrisser series a shot too.)

Danganronpa V3 huh? V3 is decent, but unless the ending is amazing, I don't think it's nearly as good as the first two. Something about it just seems missing.
-
Unfortunately, that's not really the case. In the past there's been a lot of VNs that are released on Sony's systems before being ported to PC or something else later (if ever) and being a port that means the PC version would automatically be effected.

Looking for a visual novel that isn’t about high school

Hmm how about Utawarerumono? (because that's what I'm playing right now) Otherwise, maybe Galaxy Angel? -
Pokemon Detective Pikachu - LIVE ACTION POKEMON!!!

Ughh Hollywood must die. -
I guess, I'm starting Utawarerumono: Mask of Truth. I'm in the middle of so many VNs that I wanted to wait awhile, but with the way the last game ended I'm afraid I can't wait. I really love this series. I heard they're making a fighting game or something, but this is really the last VN one huh?

I was actually thinking about Ef as I was typing that too. I was actually playing it for a couple hours earlier today. It would be perfect to start around Christmas. I started it around last Christmas and I found the opening church scene and everything, so atmospheric and perfect. I still haven't even finished it, but I love it. It can be so slow, but the art and music and everything is just so good. I'm gonna be sad when I finally finish it.

I'm gonna have to look for some Christmas themed VNs. I remember looking for Christmas anime to watch last year and it was, sadly, pretty lacking. Hopefully, there will be a Christmas recommendations thread like there was for Halloween too. That type of stuff is fun though. It kinda feels like it helps me get more emotionally invested. That little extra bond with the characters really helps for me.
