A lot of awesome things have been happening in my life lately, and while this may sound like good news to some of you (if you follow me), there is one thing that has been plaguing my mind ever since I came back to this site and left Japan. I've made a lot of threads in the past regarding the giveaway prizes I still owe people, but this thread is going to be a little bit different. I can't help but feel guilty because I worked so hard in promising gifts to everyone, and in the end I never got a chance to deliver on them. This isn't unique to the west though, the japanese market is going the same way, with more and more companies and creators opting for all-age. A lot of those more unique titles probably wouldn't get made today anyway as people demand a huge amount of content. I think someone (it might have been Moogy?) mentioned that Romeo had said that it used to be enough to simply add some sex scenes but now people demand school settings, and other stuff. I think it's possible that the future (japanese) market will consist of companies that release mostly moege and nukige (and titles with a bit more plot that follow a simliar "formula") which will still be eroge, a few companies releasing "plot-focused" titles, mostly without ero, possibly mainly on console, and a few bigger companies like Nitro (unless they decide to just focus on Sonico lol) and Alicesoft whose titles wouldn't really work as all age. I don't really feel like lamenting over the death of eroge when a huge amount of the writers who wrote those titles in the first place seems to have just up and left the industry, (at least the eroge part of it), with no one new to step into their shoes. I'm definitely curious about the all age comment you mentioned and how a lot of companies are opting in that direction. It's strange because every month in 2015 was littered with moege advertisements in Akihabara, so much so that even games like Hitori Sensou (2014) was plastered with sexual imagery in order to sell it. The predecessor to Subahibi was just released on the 23rd of October (a few weeks ago), and even that was advertised in Akiba with porn and tropes (panty shots, accentuated breasts). It's an interesting market in Japan, because nukige (by law I assume) are never advertised, yet Sofmap and Getchu are littered with them on release day. May-Be Soft released Change! ~Ano Ko ni Natte Kunkun Peropero~ last year in July/August and even that is still sold used at 6,800 yen. In fact, it was on Getchu's top 10 list for a few months in a row if I am not mistaken. I mean, when that game costs more than Grisaia used, I feel it says a lot about the market. I'm aware of it, sadly. But the reasons are a bit different. The eroge market in Japan is not blooming, it's dying. Therefore producers take less risk, companies crash and burn, etc... And you need to respond to the very specific needs of some fans that go unbelievably balistic if you don't - mandatory voices, mandatory school setting, date-able heroines (that are faithful and virgin), large amount of text, and so many unsaid conventions... The same thing is happened to anime. There's a reason why two of the best VNs released in those last few years are SubaHibi and SakuUta - for the simple reason that Sca-ji is not only a fascinating writer, but also his own boss running his own company. It's not a really happy state indeed. It's the disappearance of a subculture and everything it means. The thing is, I don't see the current english market picking up where the japanese one left, and I don't even see it making that legacy available over here. Doesn't mean we won't get good VNs. There's plenty of stuff out there still, I'm not pessimistic. As I said, that's a pretty opinionated point of view, I don't expect everyone (far from it) to agree with it. There's a reason why I learned japanese, I don't think so many people are interested in what I think is interesting in eroge. I agree with the company aspect here. I feel companies tie down successful writers, and much like the idol industry and voice acting business in Japan, the contracted company you work for calls all the shots, leaving you as a writer with very little free rein.

That happens more often than you might think. Take a break or find someone to talk to if you can. Give your head some time to rest. Maybe. :/
