How is the Visual Novel Talk section doing?

I don't think that there is any problems with this section, true I do have one suggestion that could improve it, and that is to make a sub section inside VN Talk for VN recommendations.5 points -

something like this. "updated" would need to have a timer so it automatically disappears after maybe a week or 3 days or somethign like that. They should all have that function, actually.2 points -
Overall the animanga section is pretty calm, I don't think there's any issue to worry about here. Some spam here and there but few off-topic. This section rarely has the kind of heated debates we can see in VN talk or the controversial threads in GD, and it's browsed quite extensively by two mods who are part of those who have nothing better to do than refreshing the forum every 5 minutes (me and Nosebleed) so it's well monitored anyway.2 points

First you pick which VN you want to translate, this is very important, trust me~ Then you have to figure out how to extract its scripts into readable files so you can edit them. This requires you to have a software tool that can extract the VN's script files. This thread might help. From then on you translate the scripts you got from the previous step by editing the script files and replacing the japanese text with your translation. When you're done translating either the whole VN or some scripts, you can go over the translated scripts and edit the lines you've translated to make the english (or whatever language) sound better so it doesn't seem like some stiff machine translation but like an actual book you're reading. And finally you have to find a way to insert them back into the game, this, once again, either requires a tool or programing skills. There's multiple ways to insert the scripts back into the game so there's no defined way to do this. It just varies from VN to VN and from person to person. TL;DR hacking > translation > editing (optional but recommended) > patch creation2 points

Discussion: Policies to deal with new threads vs "Necro"-ing
Darklord Rooke and one other reacted to Steve for a topic
The main problem it imposes is a lack of interested in a repeated topic. When a person creates a new topic that has already been discussed in the past, the people who have said their part in the old one will be less likely to post in the new one (I often ignore topics i have thoroughly answered in the past). The opposing problem is reviving an old post where the information can be outdated or the topic has so much content that new members will not want to read through. Finding the proper balance is the difficult part for every forum. There cannot really be a simple policy, it is up to the feels and information of the topic poster - is there an old topic discussing exactly what you are going to discuss? Is the topic relevant to this day? Can opinions of the posters in the old topic change over time so much to justify a new topic for them to express a new opinion? Those are all relative question that the topic poster should ask, and usually the only way it can work on a forum. If I would give an example, I just revived the AstralAir topic as the topic itself was about a game that is coming out this month - it is not out yet so any information relevant to that topic is still relevant today and a new opinions of former posters and new posters can add to such topic. However once the game comes out, it will easily warrant a new topic, because people might want to discuss the game from a different perspective, not from a perspective of someone who is waiting for it but someone who is in the middle of playing it or has finished it. The new topic will be full of spoilers and new opinions about the game, that were impossible to be formed in the past (as obviously the game wasn't out yet). So instead of imposing a rule of like "don't revive if the topic has been dead for more than 2 months", we need to educate the people posting on how to differentiate between a topic that needs revival and topic that needs a new post from scratch. And that can be a hard thing~2 points -

50 translated VNs you should read before you die
Pantsuhelm reacted to Kaguya for a topic
This list won't feature the VNs in order of "how good they are". Rating them would be way too much of a clusterfuck to me. The VNs are not in their respective order. Meaning number 1 is not the best, and so on. 1_CHAOS; HEAD 2_Cross Channel 3_G-Senjou no Maou 4_Fate/Stay Night 5_Forest This Visual Novel is the easiest visual novel translated to get a bad ending without using a walkthrough- which just adds to the fun of it. It makes a massive amount of references to common literature, which makes it even better. 6_Katahane It may seem like an ordinary moege- the atmosphere is light, the story is full of cuteness, which you can note by the character design and soundtrack. It gets really good in the middle, and you'll be dying to know what happens in the end. A game with multiple perspectives, it's definitely one of the most enjoyable Visual Novels I've ever read. 7 Majikoi 8_Little Busters! 9_Tsukihime "You shouldn't tell lies that you can't even fool yourself with" 10_Swan Song A post apocalyptic Visual Novel. 11_Symphonic Rain It may seem like your ordinary moege. Trust me, it's not. 12_Sharin no Kuni, Himawari no Shoujo (and sequel) 13_Sekien no Inganock Steampunk. An atmosphere full of mysteries and references that will make your head blow up. 14_Steins; Gate A visual novel that deals extensively with time travel and it's consequences. 15_Utawarerumono 16_Fault: Milestone (1 & 2) 17_Higurashi no Naku Koro Ni 18_Kara no Shoujo 19_Umineko no Naku Koro ni 20_Planetarian 21_Ever 17 Another top 10. 22_Remember11 It lacks in the ending, but otherwise the story of this VN has enough to easily become one of my all-time favorites. 23_Zanmataisei Demonbane 24_Rewrite "Could it possibly be rewritten, this fate of hers?" Another one that enters the top 10. 25_Narcissu 26_Grisaia no Kajitsu 27_Saya no Uta Only if you enjoy dark and messed up settings. 28_Higanbana no Saku Yoru ni 29_Eien no Aselia 30_Rose Guns Days (1 & 2) There are small sections of gameplay on this one, but you can skip them by pressing the space bar, so this still qualifies. 31_Sengoku Rance I feel obliged to comment on this VN before suggesting it to anyone. It's an Alicesoft title, which speaks a lot for itself... If you don't know how it's going to be like, well.. Kind of tough to describe. Lots of sex, including comedy rape. Alicesoft tends to make the whole story a comedy until right near the end, where things actually do get serious. It's worth checking out, if you don't mind Rance's personality. 32_Phenomeno Want a short VN that can captivate you for their whole duration? Here is it. Visual novel adapted from the youth horror novel written by Hajime Ninomae and illustrated by yoshitoshi ABe. 33_Ef- A Fairy Tale of the Two 34_Dysfunctional Systems Another one great for those who want short Visual Novels. 35_Daibanchou Another Alicesoft title. While Rouga is not near Rance's level when it comes to pissing off people, alicesoft's style is something which often doesn't please people. 36_Yume Miru Kusuri The endings pack quite a punch. 37_Kikokugai- The Cyber Slayer 38_Eden 39_Hoshizora no Memoria 40_Katawa Shoujo Yep, it's somewhat overrated. Still, the fact that it is substantially easier for those who are starting to play visual novels to read should not be discarded, and overall, the story was good. 41_World End Economica 42_YU-NO 43_Shikkoku no Sharnoth Yep, there is a minigame on this one. If you download a save data you can skip the minigame, though. So it still qualifies. Another VN that enters my top 10. 44_Muv Luv Alternative The first Muv Luv didn't have enough to enter this list. You should still read it, though~ MLA is definitely awesome. 45_Dangan Ronpa 46_Comyu - Kuroi Ryuu to Yasashii Oukoku 47_Hanachirasu 48_Ayakashibito 49_I/O 50_Deardrops1 point -

I'll just say this: If newbies don't get the chance to talk about all the stuff they came here to talk about, regardless if it has been talked about or not, they'll just leave. I started a topic about saya no uta, and I'm sure it has been talked about before. But I still enjoyed the heck out of it, it got like 140 replies or something. If I had to go searching for an old thread and replying to that instead, I wouldn't have enjoyed it in the least. Plus it would have bugged some people (for some reason). So if you ask me, repeated threads>necromanced thread. And for those who are tiered of looking at stuff that have been talked about before, may I ask why in the world are you looking at it then?! Is someone holding a gun to your head, forcing you to read every thread on the forums? I'm even surprised you bothered to open it. let others have fun, for crying out loud!!1 point

I was the same, "slept" 2 hours and then the alarm went off to grind the game. I hope it's just the sleep deprivation that's making me fail and not the game hating me. <3 I agree, out of all forums Anime&Manga talk is the most calm, I mean all there is to discuss is anime and manga so there's not much that can go on anyway. I think it's fine the way it is currently. I prefer reading this Anime & Manga talk forum than any other anime/manga based forum like MAL or Crunchyroll. At least here there's actual decent discussion going on.1 point

How did you start reading VNs?

Heh... and here I was thinking that Rewrite was a really, really bad introduction point to VNs. Even if it was only the second one. And I'm still happy that you found your way here man. Makes all those endless hours I spend dealing with trolls over at youtube while like its worth it. Although, out of curiosity I still have to ask; why did uninstall Clannad when you ran into the IRL wall we all have to deal with called "school". Why didn't you just stop playing it and come back a while later?1 point -

I have to say this, even though it might be quite unpopular. I really love the community here and fuwanovel - it's my favorite forum on the web. I adore how friendly people here can be and I really hope we can keep it that way. Ever now and then however, I still run into some rather unfriendly people and it makes me rather depressed to see. So, I wanna bring up the possibility that start giving users warnings for behavior that would generally be considered as rude and/or unpleasant for the rest of the forum, much that same way they do over at The Escapist.1 point -

Er... I don't think you got far enough, the routes are definitely different - you even go to different cities for different concerts depending on who's route you are on. It sounds to me that you didn't even get past the common-route. I'd give it a try, it's definitely not linear. It's got your typical common-route which splits into 3 unique routes depending on which girl you've been going for. It's not like Sharin no Kuni or G-Senjou which has the "1 route" theme with little branches. Sharin no Kuni would be Fig.1, Kira*Kira would be Fig.21 point -

How is the Visual Novel Talk section doing?

Its almost like this comes up every month and gets ignored by moderators because "every recommendation is personal" or something along those lines. In other words, this suggestion has been brought up many times, but is not going to happen anytime soon. Kaguya's and Clephas both have some good lists for people to be directed to and we don't get 100's of recommendation things a day. Its fine as it is.1 point -

Id rather pedos get off on bon bon biyori than solicit underage children into porn. One could argue that an age of 2d lolis could theoritically reduce underage crimes, as porn has done for rape statistics. However you have to keep an open mind when researching these things. I'd say fear and politics has done more harm about these issues than helped.1 point -

The forums we've got going on do make working pretty easy, all things considered. Just a random idea that came to mind would be to have a "job" section to post recruitment requests in general, instead of posting it on a current forum or creating a new one. I haven't given the idea a tremendous amount of thought, but it could be pretty useful to be able to just post job recruitments somewhere. As for somebody posting recruitment request on VNAer, how exactly would that work?1 point

Derailing in Games and Chatter? From what I've seen, this is an occurrence which can be overlooked. With the somewhat random and weird topics found on there, derailing from the topic shouldn't be much of a problem. Besides, derailment in Games and Chatter only lasts for a few posts or so.1 point -

Tvtropes has this "Sliding Scale of Realism vs. Idealism" to classify works of media as, and Umineko is definitely much much more on the idealistic side of the scale, if not in an extreme sense. It's possibly one of the longest and most idealistic-minded VNs that's out there to date (I say "longest" because there's another VN I've read that surpasses Umineko's crazy idealism but isn't as long). Although of course, I can't be 100% sure... x_x Generally this means that the writer will purposefully withhold any "objective" information (which only the writer understands for him/herself) for the sake of subtlety and reader-interpretation (which in turn means that the writing prevents itself from spoon-feeding the reader by being as "subjective" as possible), and/or will opt for a "best" (this is obviously very opinionated) method of information being presented that fits perfectly with the overall feel. It's all about presentation for the idealistic-minded writers, and Umineko is therefore almost all about its presentation in the same way rather than the initial content. Usually these are all just stepping stones to the true goal that is bringing across the message/s the writer likes into the reader's mind. If you focus your attention on to the "journey" and not the "destination" in these types of works, you'll be more likely to naturally come across revelations/realizations, understanding the content and then the message. I will not say nor imply that the more realistic-minded people cannot understand it... but that they'll have a harder time shifting to this mindset to accept such things these writings bring like "skepticism" and "subjectivity". I personally had an extremely difficult time understanding Umineko the whole way through but that's a given the first time you read something presented like this, and it's a given for anything to this high of a level. My friends who've read it also didn't understand it at all after their first time reading it, and many others I assume as well. Umineko and all other extreme idealism-infused stories need to be read multiple times to generally understand them... After all, the writer was purposefully playing on/subverting notions of "scientific" logic and common sense while only documenting what he/she considers necessary and "best" for the mindscrew-related feel and the message. Oh and, these types of works are quite rare, a minority if you will. Since I vastly prefer these types of stories over most others, I ate it up like candy whilst reading through it the first time and proceeded to call it a masterpiece. I love Umineko so much. If it has already fit your preferences before you read it, then most likely you'll enjoy it anyways, whereas it becomes very polarizing to try to fit it in with your preferences during reading it.1 point

Ashadow700 reacted to babiker for a topic
yyyyyyyyyyy But on a more serious note, since you bumped this thread, I'll go ahead and join in on the loot Well, I actually started reading VN's not so far ago, about 10 months or so. I was watching an anime review by arkada, about "the world God only knows", and I got very interested in the whole idea of VN's. But it wasn't until I watched his Clannad review that I actually tried one. He mentioned how the story was "so touching, it will bring the manliest man to tears" and, being the manly man I am, I took this as a personal challenge, and since I don't like watching lovey dovey anime, I decided to try the VN. I actually finished all 5 side routes before interring one of the main routes, but when I did... I got emotionally involved like never before... I actually cared deeply about what would happen to the protag and his love interest. Don't get me wrong, I never care about this normally. And you know what? I don't remember why exactly, but I got so close to crying... this close... aaaaaaaand I uninstalled the dam thing before finishing the route, cuz I had exams . But I was so scared of the power of this thing, I ended up not trying another VN until a month had passed. Then I discovered ashadow, who "guided" my VN path pretty well. I got to play some awesome VN's cuz of him, like Rewrite, Rewrite and Rewrite! Then I ended up here with you guys. And I suppose you know the story as good as I from there1 point -

Mind if I bump this thread a bit? ... You don't? Okay, thanks. I think it was some time during either January or February of 2012, that I more or less on accident clicked on an article for a certain game named Katawa Shoujo. Since it was free and I did not have a lot of other things to do, and downloaded it, read it and absolutely loved it. It made me go out and try a look for other visual novels, but it really wasn't until I found fuwanovel about a year later that I seriously started getting into VNs, as for the longest time I had no information on what visual novels were worth reading or where and how to download them. The only thing I really had to go by back then were that I would go and play the VNs which had been adapted into anime,, which is why my second, third and forth VN ended up being Clannad, Kanon and Fate/Stay night, and it would also take me several hours to get the games up and running because they did not come pre-patched or anything. Seriously, praise be to fuwanovel and Aaeru-sama. Dear lord, I hope we can keep this community as great of a place as it was when I first found it. Pointless fun fact of the day; it was actually one of my IRL friends who first introduced me to the site, although he had been immediately scared away from it because, quote; "They were all a bunch of perverts".
